Went out for a meal this lunchtime with OH and MiL. Took 15 minutes to defrost the car thoroughly. The Van still has snow on it. It was 1C degree at lunchtime so not much of a thaw. Not thrilled with the Pub as they hadn't bothered clearing the disabled parking spots of ice. Too dangerous for MiL to get out there so found an ordinary spot which was clear and used 2 spaces. Mentioned it inside to waitress who reported it but said manager wasn't bothered. Wonder if we'll get a review email. Hope so.

The same from me too, @DavidKlyne and I hope all progress well.

Was that a new pub for your lunch or the usual one in the village, as one would have thought they would want to encourage trade at this time of the year? @Wherenext

It has not been too bad here today, with most of the icy pavements now no longer slippery. We even had some sun shines this afrenoon. I took a 2.5 mlm walked down to our Asda car park to partake in a research programme run by Our Future Health for the NHS, where they did the usual measurements, height, weight, BP and took a couple of blood samples. They were very proficient and it only took 10 mins, then a bit of shopping and a walk back home all completed in just over 2 hrs. The temperature had dropped by 5:30 with cars becoming iced up again.

Have just had a frost alert from Swift Command saying I have water in the tanks although I did drain down before coming home on Monday, perhaps there is some left in the flush tank which I tend not to empty.

Great news @DavidKlyne - let's hope Margaret gets sorted and she's quickly on the path to a full recovery.

I bumped into a dog-walking friend, yesterday - not seen him for ages - he's been waiting for a new hip for many months but, because the surgeon said it was now so bad that it was 'bone on bone' - he's been moved to the top of the list and they'll operate in 9 weeks time. So - the NHS can move fairly quickly when it has to. He's also hoping they're going to use this new procedure where they make a minimal incision under local anaesthetic and replace the joint through that and you're up and walking again within a couple of hours - apparently!! The marvels of modern science😀

I adopt the opposite approach @nelliethehooker . After all the messing about I had with the last Truma boiler, I've now vowed I will not run the heating without water in it - even though you're supposed to be able to do just that. I'm convinced the last fiasco was caused by an overheat sensor or something. Consequently, I leave the heating on - set to 10 degrees at the moment. I know it's a bit extravagant but I can live with that.

I then give it a blast, on gas, every afternoon and keep everything dry and warmed through. I do use it as my 'man shed', when it's parked at home, though!!

We’ve been lucky with the snow - just a smattering. But it’s bitterly cold. I’m very grateful for the Aga - it means the kitchen is always warm when we come downstairs. We don’t have central heating. We briefly thought about it when we moved into the farmhouse when my FIL died in 1996. But having suffered the disturbance of rewiring the electric, couldn’t face any more of it then. And somehow there’s always something else to spend money on. The first one up in a morning (OH)switches on a small panel heater in our bedroom . Then off again when I get up.

We have a wood burner in the kitchen (it’s a very big room), so we manage very well. If we open the door into the hall it spreads the heat around.

Sometimes I think, it must be nice to just flick a switch.

I had mine done 15 years ago so maybe things have changed over the years. They usually give you a spinal block so that has to wear off before you can get out of bed but they are usually quite keen to get you out of bed. It looks as if Margaret's operation is scheduled for the afternoon, so it will probably be the next day before she is out of bed? The same Consultant that did mine is going to do Margaret's, he is now Professor! I think waiting lists vary a lot around the country. On our local news the other day they were sending people from Suffolk to the West Midlands to have hip replacements. There are just too many people waiting for knees and hips in MK. Probably something to do with the demographics, reverse baby boomers? Hope friend gets on OK with his Op.

@Goldie146 I banked our stove up and left it on tick over last night, mainly to keep the pooch warm. OH let him out at 7am this morning and it was warm down there. We have our thermostat set at 16c overnight, and it did come on briefly, but I think it is about -7c outside, bitter cold, and our snow is still here. When I got up fire was still glowing so a couple of kindling sticks, a log and a few coals has it toasting us merrily now. It is so cold here though. The snow is frozen, but thankfully we cleared and salted paths. It’s a Mum day for me, so not risking Mini again, OH will drop me off. We contemplated a solid fuel Aga/Rayburn when we did our kitchen out and took a wall down a few years ago, but I like my current set up to be honest.

Well done @KjellNN hope you do not have any ill side effects

glorious in Stubbers, sheets and towels out on the line in the sunshine, but it is bitterly cold, but will give them a blow and then dump in tumbler before the sun sinks too low for the solar panels. Trying to use solar panels to their max efficiency for this time of year, currently generating 940w and 1.5 kw thus far today so not too bad for this time of year.

we are gas central heating set for 15 degs overnight, it does not usually cut in overnight, bungalow south facing so max sun, just the conservatory that is freezing this time of year and heating it is like throwing pound notes out of the windows, but another week and the early sun will be high enough to give it some sun. Planning a quick spin on my bike later, still in shorts but i use fairly longish ones for cycling so the bits that count done get goo cold 😁

good luck to all who are having ops etc, fortunately i had my knees and thumbs done privately, NHS paid, many years ago, and my hips, although not brilliant, are livable with.

keep safe and warm everybody, feel for those who struggle to pay for heating, report in news of couple who take their dogs to bed with them to keep warm, shocking.

@Rufs ... Glad that most have got heating. Our boiler broke down yesterday. One chap came today to diagnose the problem (apparently it's the fan).... another person is due to come tomorrow to fit a new fan (.…£££!!!)

My, you were in for quite a while @KjellNN. Always good to be back in ones own bed plus the food is better. I lost a lot of weight (for my size) when last in and still haven't managed to regain the loss. The staff on the ward just didn't know how to cope with a GF patient. OH kept me topped up as best she could.

Do you have those days that you set out to do X,Y and Z but just after getting stuck into X you hit a problem and have to go to A,B and C to resolve it but halfway through B the Y problem rears it's ugly head and needs sorting but can't be until problem Z is sorted? Well it's been that sort of day. Glad to report that all problems finally dealt with, some have had to be postponed whilst we wait for items to arrive but the day has been a right old pain in the youknowwhat.

Did manage to clear the snow off The Van at last today. Will, hopefully, give it a ride out tomorrow. Weather forecast is dry but well below freezing overnight.

@KjellNN - great news - wishing you a speedy recovery and hope you are soon back to your normal busy self😀. When I had the by-pass done on that aneurysm in my leg, two years ago - I managed to 'escape' after 48 hours, despite it being classed as major surgery. Couldn't get out of the place fast enough - so I can only guess how you must be feeling after this length of time.

@Goldie146 - so envious of your Aga. I miss the one we had in the last house so much. It was a barn conversion (a proper one!) - and we found it when it was derelict and before the builders had started. The builder was someone Ros previously worked for (as a sales negotiator) and therefore we were 'allowed' to radically alter the design before they started. It had a huge kitchen which was just screaming out for an Aga - so in it went. It was always the focal point of the house, and - as you say - kept the whole place warm. Don't know if I would like to run one these days, though. Being gas, it would cost an arm and a leg to run nowadays. Wouldn't be without a wood-burner, though - and it was high on the list or priorities when we re-built this place.

Glad to hear you have made it home @KjellNN. Do take things easy for a while. The one thing that I remember about hospital stays, although not as long as yours, was the strange exhaustion of being home!

Thanks for all the good wishes! I am taking things slowly, not feeling quite so tired today as yesterday. It was a long haul…….4 weeks almost to the hour. The food was very variable, and my appetite not that great, so I have lost a few kg, which is probably quite a good thing!

GP rang me just before we came out to discuss the tablets to be prescribed, so that is all sorted now and I should get them in a couple of days.

The court case our daughter was on has just finished, report was on BBC news before she had even left the courtroom apparently, so time now to get back to normal.

The Touareg has not been used for over 5 weeks, just managed to get it started this morning to see if battery had survived, However the cold and damp seems to have affected the electronics as the accelerator pedal did nothing. Hopefully warmer weather will sort that out.

@KjellNN Glad to hear you are home. After what you have been through I would have thought it perfectly normal to feel tired at times, take the opportunity to have a nap!!!

Interesting to hear what people have their heating set at. Ours is on 24/7 but with four different temperatures. 18 overnight, usually doesn't come on unless its frosty outside, 19 degrees from 8.00am to 14.30 then up to 19.5 during the afternoon and then 20 degrees for the evening until 10.30pm. It seems to be the right balance for us.

I am currently constructing an energy use spreadsheet. Think it might be worth installing solar panels and perhaps a battery. We have gas heating at the moment, relatively new boiler, but have an eye to changing to a heat pump at some stage in the future so we don't use any gas? We had hoped by now that price of energy would have gone down more than it has but if anything its going in the opposite direction. Decisions, decisions!

    Glad you are home KJ

Very cold here over the past few days it’s been below freezing overnight and hardly above zero during the day so still very Icey we have our hearing on during the day but don’t bother overnight we also have a gas fire in our living room so tend to use that when sitting in there . We were out today and had to buy a new TV our current one was getting very dull so got a really good deal on a Sharp one from Lidl today will maybe set it up later on tonight.

@richardandros - Our Aga is solid fuel. It was installed in 1949 (when my husband was one). It's been our only form of cooking since we moved into the farmhouse when my FIL died in 1996. It heats the water as well as cooks food and warms the kitchen. It can be unpredictable and has "off" days when it doesn't get as hot as I would like. Or so hot it burns cakes. But I couldn't do without it. We're not on mains gas and it's not on an outside wall and accessible for an oil tank. Now and then we consider refiguring the kitchen and pantry (both huge) but we've got to the stage of saying "it will see us out". We have an agreement, my husband fills/riddles and empties it, and I cook. The photo shows it in it's working clothes - definitely needs a good clean.

@Cornersteady like the photos. I guess that is the Penshaw Monument in the background of your first photo, as featured in one of L J Ross's DCI Ryan books.

@KjellNN pleased to read that you are home and hopefully you will be back to full fitness in the not too distant future. Take care of yourself.

Hope that the engineer gets your boiler fixed tomorrow and that it doesn't turn out to be too expensive @DSB We had a fan to a short while back and thankfully the replacement of it was covered by our boiler insurance.
