Went out for a meal this lunchtime with OH and MiL. Took 15 minutes to defrost the car thoroughly. The Van still has snow on it. It was 1C degree at lunchtime so not much of a thaw. Not thrilled with the Pub as they hadn't bothered clearing the disabled parking spots of ice. Too dangerous for MiL to get out there so found an ordinary spot which was clear and used 2 spaces. Mentioned it inside to waitress who reported it but said manager wasn't bothered. Wonder if we'll get a review email. Hope so.

The same from me too, @DavidKlyne and I hope all progress well.

Was that a new pub for your lunch or the usual one in the village, as one would have thought they would want to encourage trade at this time of the year? @Wherenext

It has not been too bad here today, with most of the icy pavements now no longer slippery. We even had some sun shines this afrenoon. I took a 2.5 mlm walked down to our Asda car park to partake in a research programme run by Our Future Health for the NHS, where they did the usual measurements, height, weight, BP and took a couple of blood samples. They were very proficient and it only took 10 mins, then a bit of shopping and a walk back home all completed in just over 2 hrs. The temperature had dropped by 5:30 with cars becoming iced up again.

Have just had a frost alert from Swift Command saying I have water in the tanks although I did drain down before coming home on Monday, perhaps there is some left in the flush tank which I tend not to empty.

Great news @DavidKlyne - let's hope Margaret gets sorted and she's quickly on the path to a full recovery.

I bumped into a dog-walking friend, yesterday - not seen him for ages - he's been waiting for a new hip for many months but, because the surgeon said it was now so bad that it was 'bone on bone' - he's been moved to the top of the list and they'll operate in 9 weeks time. So - the NHS can move fairly quickly when it has to. He's also hoping they're going to use this new procedure where they make a minimal incision under local anaesthetic and replace the joint through that and you're up and walking again within a couple of hours - apparently!! The marvels of modern science😀

I adopt the opposite approach @nelliethehooker . After all the messing about I had with the last Truma boiler, I've now vowed I will not run the heating without water in it - even though you're supposed to be able to do just that. I'm convinced the last fiasco was caused by an overheat sensor or something. Consequently, I leave the heating on - set to 10 degrees at the moment. I know it's a bit extravagant but I can live with that.

I then give it a blast, on gas, every afternoon and keep everything dry and warmed through. I do use it as my 'man shed', when it's parked at home, though!!

We’ve been lucky with the snow - just a smattering. But it’s bitterly cold. I’m very grateful for the Aga - it means the kitchen is always warm when we come downstairs. We don’t have central heating. We briefly thought about it when we moved into the farmhouse when my FIL died in 1996. But having suffered the disturbance of rewiring the electric, couldn’t face any more of it then. And somehow there’s always something else to spend money on. The first one up in a morning (OH)switches on a small panel heater in our bedroom . Then off again when I get up.

We have a wood burner in the kitchen (it’s a very big room), so we manage very well. If we open the door into the hall it spreads the heat around.

Sometimes I think, it must be nice to just flick a switch.

I had mine done 15 years ago so maybe things have changed over the years. They usually give you a spinal block so that has to wear off before you can get out of bed but they are usually quite keen to get you out of bed. It looks as if Margaret's operation is scheduled for the afternoon, so it will probably be the next day before she is out of bed? The same Consultant that did mine is going to do Margaret's, he is now Professor! I think waiting lists vary a lot around the country. On our local news the other day they were sending people from Suffolk to the West Midlands to have hip replacements. There are just too many people waiting for knees and hips in MK. Probably something to do with the demographics, reverse baby boomers? Hope friend gets on OK with his Op.

@Goldie146 I banked our stove up and left it on tick over last night, mainly to keep the pooch warm. OH let him out at 7am this morning and it was warm down there. We have our thermostat set at 16c overnight, and it did come on briefly, but I think it is about -7c outside, bitter cold, and our snow is still here. When I got up fire was still glowing so a couple of kindling sticks, a log and a few coals has it toasting us merrily now. It is so cold here though. The snow is frozen, but thankfully we cleared and salted paths. It’s a Mum day for me, so not risking Mini again, OH will drop me off. We contemplated a solid fuel Aga/Rayburn when we did our kitchen out and took a wall down a few years ago, but I like my current set up to be honest.

Home now. Was allowed to leave yesterday just before lunch time. Son picked me up and took me to our daughter’s house as OH was there to look after the boys. I have various pills to take, will need to contact GP for an additional supply of the new antibiotics as they are to be taken for 6 weeks. Finding it surprisingly tiring meantime so had a snooze later, and another one after dinner. Nice to be back in my own bed.

No snow here but very cold

Well done @KjellNN hope you do not have any ill side effects

glorious in Stubbers, sheets and towels out on the line in the sunshine, but it is bitterly cold, but will give them a blow and then dump in tumbler before the sun sinks too low for the solar panels. Trying to use solar panels to their max efficiency for this time of year, currently generating 940w and 1.5 kw thus far today so not too bad for this time of year.

we are gas central heating set for 15 degs overnight, it does not usually cut in overnight, bungalow south facing so max sun, just the conservatory that is freezing this time of year and heating it is like throwing pound notes out of the windows, but another week and the early sun will be high enough to give it some sun. Planning a quick spin on my bike later, still in shorts but i use fairly longish ones for cycling so the bits that count done get goo cold 😁

good luck to all who are having ops etc, fortunately i had my knees and thumbs done privately, NHS paid, many years ago, and my hips, although not brilliant, are livable with.

keep safe and warm everybody, feel for those who struggle to pay for heating, report in news of couple who take their dogs to bed with them to keep warm, shocking.
