Run one vehicle, the savings can then be offset against shogun fuel.  Its simple really 🤔

Yes but this would happen only very occasionally, EasyT and only in the winter. Even then, if I have enough range left in the Smart Electric after my shift, I would use that for the commute to save money on diesel for the Shogun. The rest of the year, there will be a huge saving in fuel costs that will, without doubt, make me better off!

The Shogun wouldn't be able to cope with that. It's over 10 years old, the fuel and repair bills would be enormous. I tried it before and it was no good, that's why I use the Smart. The Shogun is now just a towcar for the caravan, nothing else.

DK, even if everyone took your advice and stopped replying do you really think it would just die a death?

I think we know that none of the advice / suggestions will be used or taken seriously as it is what it is and has been around for years in some shape or form.

Classic WUMming at it's best really! wink

No, I won't be using my cousins electricity as I won't have 8 hours to spare to wait there whilst the car is being charged!

Yes the Shogun mileage is low but the commute is a long distance run with better mileage than urban driving in congested traffic. Also the occasional use in that way will not cost too much. It had a 360 mile range on a full tank of diesel. A 60 mile commute once a week or fortnight might mean a cost of £10 in diesel,  if that, in the winter only. Spring, Summer and Autumn will mean no cost at all.

A busy morning here, before we head off to a getaway at a posh hotel.

We have routine visits by the vet every fortnight (part of proactive vs reactive approach). One thing she does is "PD" (pregnancy diagnose) the cows/heifers that should be in calf. This morning there were 14 for her to check, and all are in calf. One is having twins - which is either a good or a bad thing. We don't know the sexes, but hope for twin heifers. If there is a bull and a heifer, the heifer is always a non breeder. A good job this doesn't happen with human twins!

Then it's an early dinner before my husband goes to the funeral of an elderly neighbour (he's been warned not to stay for the Funeral Tea), then we're off!

Sorry it's all a bit mundane.

Part of this discussion reminds  me a bit of a couple of neighbours further up the street , a (now retired) teacher and her lawyer daughter.

Like us, they bought their plot and had a house built, unlike us they knew nothing about house building so had several disasters along the way.

After we got to know them, and they discovered I knew a thing or two about construction, they frequently came and asked for information and advice, and then generally went ahead and did exactly the opposite of what was advised!

One thing that does not appear to have been factored in is the base cost of vehicles, MOT, servicing,VED, depreciation, and that's before the start button is pressed.

The really simple answer is to carry a petrol generator in the boot of the EV - Simples  laughing

Edit...Hang on a minute, why not do away with the generator and fit an engine instead !!

My opinion is that most people like to be argumentative wink

It would have been better for Malc to change his towcar and Smart car for one vehicle that can do both using the saving on insurance/servicing/depreciation etc to fund the additional fuel costs.

This is exactly what we are currently doing with our cars.

What Malc has not taken into account is the cost of keeping or eventually replacing his towcar.

Although Malcs posts are frustrating at least we are not seeing as many "What I bought at Tesco" or the constant "I hope you get well" posts from others.

I thought 'Ground Hog Day' was a film not a title of a thread on CT yell

Have spend the last 2 weeks with my young grandchildren, its amazing how sensible they are unlike some members on here.

Goldie, have a great time away, your posts are never mundane. Didn't know that about twin calves either.

Taking granddaughter back to boarding school after lunch, think she will be happy to get back to all her friends instead of a couple of oldies for company.laughing

Cold and dreich here, dentist soon as one of my front teeth seems to be trying to disintegrate.

Deliveries  of various baby related items for DD yesterday, very fast service and all looks good.

Visit on Monday  to her husband's (rented out) flat to look at electric shower which appears to be failing, new unit ordered and should arrive next week, so that will keep me busy.

Made to measure mattress for old cot ordered.

OH seems a bit better so we ventured out for some shopping, first time since the 31st.

Some bookings made for Easter (CCC)  and mid May (CAMC),  now thinking about where we  could go in June/July that will not break the bank.  Final decision for this year will be whether to book a ferry for a September/October trip.

Our neighbours were much more frustrating as they actually asked for advice and then ignored it as it was not what they had hoped to hear!

Then expected help later when it all went wrong.

Goldie hope you enjoy your mini break, plenty of R&R .smile

Cars that are brand new are not subject to MOT. There is no VED because of being a low emission car and depreciation of electric cars is a lot less than petrol or diesel for obvious reasons. So what other costs? Servicing is not an additional cost because I have to pay that anyway with the existing petrol car.

Not sure about depreciation. If the range of the Smart EV is significantly improved then the value of this years model could drop significantly, Only Time will tell.

No need to worry about the depreciation suffered on the 3 year or car or the instant depreciation on the new one either I suppose.

I have no idea how these arrangements and insurances work Malcolm, If your car is written off at two year old do you get it's then current value?

Provided it's electric! However, I don't think an electric towcar that can do deliveries as well would be practical. The sheer size of it would make parking difficult when doing deliveries. Also the cost of purchase and finance for it would be enormous.

I don't know whether insurance costs more on EVs than on petrol versions. Brue owns an electric car so would know more about it than I do. However, she has not mentioned in any of her posts about the cost of insurance being a problem, so I would gather from that, that the cost is reasonable!

Have you ever discussed all this with anyone else outside of this forum to get their views?

Apart from the Car Salesman, of course.

Yes, we discussed over dinner with friends in Bristol who live in a top floor flat and said it wouldn't be an option for them because of having to park on the street with no electric outlet for charging. However, they thought ideal for us because of being able to plug into our caravan overnight.
