I got this photograph from a FB group of former student friends from Hull. Some of you from that area area may even recognise it, it's the Railway pub in Cottingham where a lot students lived.
So a sad goodbye to yet another memory from my days at Hull. It was a popular place for meeting up before catching the last train to Hull or Beverley - without any thought of how to get back!
Many a happy hour was spent with friends in there. Thanks for all the drinks Railway. Happy days.

Interesting day so far ,phone call from doctors to advise blood test needed as prescription review due ,email had been sent to local hospital and now no longer need to fast for one of tests,,went this afternoon , huge queue for tests 45 min wait,

Second call from Hospital appointments to advise next cardio outpatient visit is now to be phone consultation instead

Local news had a piece about Addenbrookes Hospital has set up a drive-in blood testing facility in one of the Cambridge P&R all done via car window to take pressure off local hospitals

CS, I know the feeling. We drove past a pub that we used to frequent back in the early 80s after work and were often there for a lockdown (the better sort). No longer there. Now a bunch of posh flats. We knew we were ok for the lockdown as it was almost next door to the Police Station and the majority of the customers enjoying a lock in were Coppers. Plus the only things that were violently attacked were the Cheese and Raw Onion Cobs!

Plenty done today, even packing some stuff in the caravan. I wasn't planning on mowing another lawn so soon but the elderly near neighbour who is on crutches was trying to do his and we saw him as we were returning from a walk so..... Don't worry the cable and self were safe. We were rewarded with some freshly dug up carrots and Rhubarb.

Took granddaughter (2 and a half) to Clumber Park for a picnic. Parked on the side of Lime Tree Avenue and walked across the bridge to the side now inaccessible to cars. Because of this, apart from the path round the lake, you hardly see anyone. She managed a couple of miles on the tracks before we stopped for the picnic. Whilst eating we were treated to the site of the very large C17 flying very low overhead, making a tremendous roar. My flight App showed it was RAF and flying circuits and bumps out of the now civilian Robin Hood Airport. As RAF Finningley this used to be the home of our Vulcan nuclear deterrent. Perhaps with the lack of holiday flights they are making some extra money renting time to the military.
I had craftily planned our course so we ended up close to the now defunct road, so it was a relatively easy push the mile and a half or so back to the car, as she decided 2 miles was enough.😂

Finnigley was also were the RAF taught me to fly with the university air squadron which was based there. The Vulcans were long gone by then, sadly, all we had were Chipmunks and Bulldogs, still a lot of fun though

Wet and grey this morning but its now a lot clearer with some blue patches of sky and even a bit of sunshine.
Finally managed to get my sisters curtains shortened and a set of tie backs made from the bits cut off.
More shopping online done

Dental saga continues, made a phone call to my dentist once again to see how things are progressing. The Scottish government gave the go ahead for all treatments to resume a couple of weeks ago.
The dentists are still not carrying out any treatment despite this, other than emergencies. Couldn't get a check up but I did finally got an appointment with the hygienist for the end of September.
The reason they say they are not working as normal is they do not have PPE. Now some of you may remember me getting notification that Denplan and Private patients were to be charged a fee for the PPE

Today I was told that if I did need any treatment like fillings then I would have to pay privately for it + PPE charge. I think the new owners of the practice are really taking the mick.
Words to that effect were said, I did point out that they have had the best part of 6 mths payments from me and other Denplan members without any kind of treatment. Of course the poor girl on the phone is not the one to vent ones anger on, its the new owners, surprise surprise they are not available to speak to.

IsSympathise re Denplan and your local practice.
Have not visited mine for some 10 yrs. or more and have to put up with gnashers that well past their best not to mention some loose in the gum.
Nonetheless 26 x 10 x £30 is a reasonable saving, all without any pain.
Hope you dentists see sense soon or risk losing most of their patients.

They certainly are taking the Michael TG.
We've had a check up with our Denplan registered Dentist. Mrs.WN has appointments in October for 2 lots of work involving capping. Could have been earlier but we're away. Dentist did go through all of the extra equipment she is going to have to wear and all of the deep cleaning that will be needed afterwards. There will be no extra charge. She will have to pay for some of the work which we know falls outside of Denplan but that's all.
Is there another Denplan registered practice nearby? Best wishes for a successful resolution.

Ours is an NHS dentist but they are still not doing anything, filling related, supposedly because of a lack of suitable PPE to deal with the aerosols created by the drill. I had a filling fall out and a chunk of tooth break off during lockdown. The best they can suggest is to use that temporary filling stuff you can buy. Bought some off Amazon, worked well but only lasted a week.☹️ They say if it gets painful they will assess it for antibiotics or possible extraction, which sounds a bit extreme when a filling would sort it. They couldn't give a time scale as to when they would start anything approaching normal working.

WN, there is and I've been in touch with them already, they are happy for me to transfer to them but they cannot do that at the moment as they are trying to clear their backlog of current patients.
The only problem with moving is where it is, its going to be over at Scone which is on the other side of the river from us and about a a 25 min drive. Which is fine just now while we are both fit and able to drive but as we get older and not able to then what. No buses go direct we would have to get a bus into town then another one out to Scone.
I've also been in touch with another practice in town but as a NH patient, they also are happy to take me on but again they are busy seeing to their current patients, they have suspended taking on new ones until the end of October. So I will just have to wait and suck it up for a bit longer. Thankfully I am not needing any treatment other than a scale and clean (no polish at the mo though)
Brue that is my main beef with them, they are still taking the payments but not willing to see patients, the rest is just rubbing salt into the wounds.

We had our periodic visit to the fang farrier on Monday. Apparently a problem with one tooth that will have to come out eventually but I've deferred it ftb. The less structural work undertaken during the current circumstances seems prudent plus I want to hang on to those I have left as long as possible.
On a brighter note, I've booked a CL for 4 nights over the weekend to have a bit of a shakedown trip with the new MoHo to get to grips with the different systems.

Does Denplan save the patient any money? I remember our dentist trying to persuade us years ago but at the time we belonged to a Simply Health scheme (formally HSA) which paid out a percentage of the cost up to a maximum figure but it covered a wider range of things like glasses and hospital stays. In the end we gave up on it because we were paying more out than getting back. We decided to just save a modest amount each month which mounts up quite quickly and distribute the fund on a 50% basis which eases the shock of a major expense like glasses or any dental work.

David not sure it saves you any money if you don't require a lot of treatments. However if you are a person who requires regular treatments then yes you would save money. One of the reasons I moved to Denplan was the accessibility to a dentist, at that time getting a NHS dental appointment was dire, trying to get a hygienist was even worse. Couple that with the amount of travelling (always access to a dentist) we did/do then it was a good plan to be on.
Until recently I've had no issues or complaints with the service I have received over the 20+ years of being on the plan. When our practice was run and owned by the senior dentists it was very good but last year they sold out to Portman dental care, since then there has been many changes and not for the better where patients are concerned.
I would think most would have gone along with the changes if it were not for Covid and the way they are now treating there long standing private and denplan patients. NHS patients I think will fare better as they have to abide by the NHS rules.
What is the most frustrating thing is they are still claiming they don't have PPE yet they have applied a PPE charge. The Scottish government are at odds with the dentists as they say they do have PPE.
My personal feelings are that they have had 6 months in which to obtain PPE, they have had payments from Denplan patients in all that time with no treatments so the money should be there to at least ease the cost.
Portman is a big group and their buying power would be greater than an individual practice, so again no excuse in having not purchased PPE in preparation. If other dentists can achieve this why not a dental group.
As soon as other dentists are willing and able to take on new patients I'm moving, having lost faith in the practice. It would be silly of me to quit just now and leave myself without a dentist.
Apologies to all for going on about this, rant over.

Thanks TG for the comprehensive answer. Our Dental Practise has recently been sold but not to a big group but to, I think a couple who are dentists but the original dentists still work there but I assume on an employed basis rather than a partnership? Perhaps this is more widespread than we realise. I remember talking to one of the nurses at our doctor's about them having a lot of locum doctors and she said that most doctors don't want to commit the the running on the surgery, which is a business, they just want to be doctors! Perhaps its the same with dentists?
One of my sons has been to our dentist a few times since lockdown, he needed root canal treatment which required the full PPE however he did say that on subsequent treatment the PPE used was more like normal.

Our TV licensing letter has arrived in the post this morning

Sorry - double post.

Hopefully not ABM

It will bring it home to people when they get the letter. We have always paid quarterly for some reason and as I am not 75 until next year I can't miss something I have never had but I am sure many will be very upset. Unfortunately I think the BBC have been put in an untenable position with this and whilst the outcome is not ideal at least those on lowest incomes will still get a free licence.

What a miserable day, I foolishly thought that as it was nice blue skies and sunshine late yesterday evening, the forecast at the beginning of the week would be correct. Well they got it wrong yet again, today has been grey wet and cold. Serves me right I should have known they would get it wrong.

Decided to phone the GP surgery with all the talk about winter Flu vaccine on the TV and in the press. Nothing doing there, they have no idea when they will begin or even if they will be doing them this year
what on earth is going on with our local area at the moment, its a complete mess.Talk about the left hand not knowing what the right is doing, I don't think the left hand knows what its doing.
Its alright for Nicola to say everything is fine and all services have returned to near normal, she wants to try and speak to those on the coal face, politicians
To top that OH sent his hearing aid in to the hospital 2 weeks ago to be looked at, today he rang to see if its been fixed yet. Surprise surprise they can't find it
can we ring again tomorrow
Hope others are having a better day than us

Not a good day then Tammy?

Funnily enough I rang our surgery today about flu jabs. Was told that if I didn't get a shielding letter to ring back in 2-3 weeks as they prioritising those that did. Fair enough. At least it's a plan.

Went to town this morning to do all the small bits, like pick up prescriptions, etc. Thursday is always the quiet day there.
This afternoon thought I would sort out our books and maps for next week as the weather was miserable. We have all those sort of reference books stored on an open bookcase built next to the wardrobes in the bedroom. I got a folder off the top and chucked it back up when finished with it only for it to disappear down a gap that I didn't even know we had right where the shelf abuts the wall. All the way to the bottom! So the afternoon spent taking said area to pieces with some difficulty, and then replacing it. Afternoon gone. We don't have a gap now.

Must mention to MiL that a letter will be forthcoming about TV licence. She's beginning to lose the benefits of keeping her.

Sympathy from Cheshire, the County Palatine, TammyG

Very strange this weather stuff, I'm sitting here with the rain pattering gently on the windows but listening to 20 over slog crikkit (
) from Durham on Radio 5 live extra -- proceeding happily along so one of us ought to be happier soon, and I don't think it will be ME !!As for the Medics I keep getting texts every other month or so telling me to use "MY.GP" or some such app to contact the surgery should I need to, but I don't/won't /can't *** use my mobile like that. They have been told time and again my preferences but I guess their system is from the same company as is your OH's hearing aid Department. Still you can get away with saying " Well It's your own fault, I did call you when I put your meal out "

***They won't do what I want so why, , , , , , , , , , , ,

Oh heck, reading through a few things on here, teeth, tellys and vanishing maps...

We had one of those hellfire and brimstone trips home, the wardens at Steamer Quay were out in their wellies clutching mats to help people get off water logged pitches (the bane of that particular site.) We put mats under our wheels, managed to get onto the site road, then the engine light came on...another type of sinking feeling came over us. We limped home, torrential rain, thunder and lightning, A303 had melted due to a hay lorry fire, two trees down on our final bit, another diversion...oh that was fun.

Wondering if we should attempt the next short break as that's on grass too.....☔

Definitely NOT, Brue -- I'd recommend a couple of bottles of Scotland's Best*** at least. But keep well away from 'grass' for a few months -- about 76 of them actually

*** Invertriky Malt has good recommendations from some on here and, you never know, they might come at a discount !
OK, OK I said "Might" not " Would "

WN at least they have a plan

Is your forthcoming trip going to be to the Borders?
We start at Dunbar on Monday for a couple of nights then head down to Northumberland to Old Hartley for a couple of nights, then County Durham to the now very popular Barnard Castle

Another miserable wet day here too apparently it’s to brighten up at the weekend but we shall see. Got to get the van packed for our midweek break next week just food and of course drink to put in. We have been looking after grandog today so been out a couple of walks with her she is a pug and a lazy little dog so doesn’t like going too far. Also managed to get an extra night at Troutbeck Head for our planned trip in September so happy with that as the site is showing full for most of next month.
