Bright sunny day to start with but really chilly out. Still we spent about 3 hours in the garden. Me gardening OH mending the tops of the trellising.

Our next door neighbours were out to, him in his shorts and T shirt, her and the kids rapped up like it was the arctic

They were informing us that they are looking at expanding their property, not sure if they should go up or out, what would we do.

After much discussing it looks like the up might be the winner   hope so. Would we mind if they did? how would we feel about the noise? simple answer from me, "do it while we are away" let's face it they are not going to be able to do it anytime soon, so we will be able to escape in the van once it does start. Nice of them to ask but I fear they would just have gone ahead anyway.

Went for a walk after a very late lunch, only saw 1 family out walking.

We have some nice walks where we live, only takes 2 mins to be on the edge of the village, then we can see all the hills that surround us.

Looking towards Glen Shee they still have snow on the tops, wind coming from that direct is flipping cold. Would love to be by the coast though, I always think it feels more open and I could sit watching the sea all day. Would love to sell up and move to the coast.

Thanks!  ๐Ÿ‘ ( I have found all my smileys now as you're can see! )

Yes, no doubt all these firms know more about us than we realise.  OH said she had seen something about favourites, and using a previous order, so if we do it again she will know what to do.

DD was just saying,  via Skype, that she can order stuff from Morrison's via Amazon Prime, anyone seen that?

This was on BBC News yesterday........

How are online deliveries holding up?
This has been a sticking point for many people, who are finding themselves unable to book slots and follow Prime Minister Boris Johnson's request to use online deliveries and stay at home.
Tesco is limiting online orders to 80 items only and is encouraging shoppers who can get out to use its click and collect service at local stores. It says this will free up home delivery slots for more vulnerable customers.
Asda is adopting the same policy and is also recruiting more delivery drivers.
Sainsbury's has introduced priority slots for elderly and vulnerable customers and contacted 270,000. It hopes to contact more once it has more information on eligible people. In the meantime, it is giving an additional 8,000 customers a day access to delivery slots over the phone.
However, there are reports on social media of other eligible people not being able to get through on the phone to create an account.
Morrisons is creating 3,500 new jobs to help expand its online delivery service.
Waitrose suspended its slot-booking page after all slots were taken. It says it is working to increase its capacity, while Ocado, which also delivers Waitrose food, has had very lengthy waits on its website.

Extremely cold here today. or maybe a shock after the last few days, snow flurries and a strong cold wind. Still went for my afternoon walk and managed to test out a down jacket I had bought in the sales for the tops and thinking it wouldn't get used this year.

The problem with all this uncertainty is that if you suddenly get all the orders you could well run out of space to store everything!!!

Mrs WN is still doing our shopping by going to the supermarket. She feels its only right that those that can't should take priority for online and time allocated slots at the stores.

When she called in the other day there were more shop assistants pushing their online trolleys around in Tesco than there were shoppers, who were being restricted in numbers. So shelves are being emptied by online shoppers quicker than physical shoppers. This shouldn't be a concern but if online shoppers are using multiple supermarkets then are they being fair to the rest of us? Are they being keyboard hoarders by default?

I know from comments made that these online deliveries are costed so that they become free if you spend over a certain amount. Doesn't this encourage a bit of hoarding or at least buying more than you need?  I see that some supermarkets have stopped their multiple buys offers to prevent that.

Just a few thoughts for general discussion.

BTW - Not getting at DK, as it's his quote I am using, but the quote made it easier to raise the questions.

I think you've missed a bit in your quote Kjell.

Tescos said  that the average shop before the Coronavirus was 60 items, but that had risen to over 100 items with panic buying. So Tesco decided [in order to increase no of deliveries per vehicle, presumably weight and volume], to limit orders to 80 items!

If 60 items was the average and the need is to spread the immediately available stock as far as possible amongst the greatest number of people, why up the limit by 33%?

At the other end of the scale, our Co op has limited shoppers in store to 1 of each item. Fair enough, but my wife and ! were not allowed to buy 1 loaf each to save a further shopping trip today, increasing the risk of infection by being in store amongst shoppers and staff who have to breach the 2 metre rule because in a couple of places, it is impossible to 'take evasive action'. The limit means that we cannot collect food for our elderly upstairs neighbour, either, unless we make a 3rd trip! A slight tweak of the policy may be needed ...

Despite the new procedures, the Co op STILL has no toilet rolls [this less than 45 minutes after opening time when there were no shoppers queuing to enter the store ... Perhaps the staff are just flushing them straight down the loo and cutting out the middleman?

    Steve

I am shopping in person as well WN, but trying to limit it to once a week. I think some shops are coping better than others to be honest. I have found Aldi by far the easiest, and best for stock, but we are used to Aldi and know which of their own products we enjoy and which we donโ€™t bother with. Itโ€™s fresh stuff we run out of first but having found the veg box place we are now happy. Other than not eating meat, we have no dietary issues either, which is a huge help, and must be difficult at times like this. I am perfectly happy substituting more veg for meat free mince etc..... Itโ€™s like going back to times of yore when things like Quorn didnโ€™t exist. I hate the stuff that is supposed to taste like meat, but isnโ€™t.๐Ÿคข Aldi do a fantastic range of meat free frozen stuff, so we keep freezer well stocked.

WN, for me personally, I've recently had to use on line deliveries from wherever I could get them and they were not close together, my next and final one at present is two weeks away. Just before the covid19 outbreak I'd decided to use on line deliveries due to a shoulder problem, my first order arrived just as things started to change. I've had one order from Waitrose, one from Morrisons and the next I could only get a click and collect from Waitrose. If that follows any repeat patterns around the country it probably reflects the reality, on line deliveries are difficult to obtain and now they are going to be put into order of need. Instead of perhaps weekly orders that some normally have it's a case of planning a month ahead, stock lines have been reduced and for all I know, as deliveries get picked throughout the day shoppers will probably have more choice as they can substitute items as they go along. Ordering at the moment doesn't allow for the type of shopping where if you spot something missing you look for something else, even basic things like bread doesn't turn up in orders.

Well turns out I have 2 baskets full online, one at Iceland and another at Asda. Whichever has a slot of some sort first i will go with. Never occurred to me folks could be multi ordering ๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿ˜ค. Turns out I didn't have a slot, but that wasnt clear - time came up and allowed me to shop! Now realise the x means not available. Oh how silly can you be???embarassed

There's no reason that I can't go out but after last year and OH being extremely vulnerable I dont want to go out at present. I've registered him on the government site for vulnerable which should allow priority for online shopping - eventually!

Edit it is the fresh stuff fruit and veg that runs out, friends and neighbours sorting this but I would like to get slot for a week , 2 or 3 I'm trying to secure delivery for. Just as someone has pointed out I dont want to cause issues with their shopping.

Are these very small loaves, or do you just get through a lot of bread?

We bake our own, we have a slice of toast each at breakfast time, and a slice at lunch time as an open sandwich.  The loaves are quite large, so it takes us a while to get through one, but they do keep very well (in the fridge).

That was all that was said yesterday about delivery slots, but no doubt there is more up to date info out there.

We do not have many Waitrose stores up here, 3 in the Glasgow area and a few elsewhere, 6 or 7 in total I think, our one is probably the largest around here, and the newest, opened about 3 years back I think.

The e mail we got yesterday was to OH, probably as she is the one who most often shops, but this afternoon I also got one, so they are working their way through the over 70s.

My post wasn't intended to have a go at anyone.

I suppose with priority now being co-ordinated for more vulnerable clients then that may push more able bodied onliners back into the shops. It's all a bit of a mess. I know people who are restricted to online, like yourself Brue, probably have a harder shop in many ways. Trying to find a slot sounds like a lottery so at least Mrs WN can just nip out at any time but obviously she is trying to reduce the exposure.

I was just hoping, as B2 intimated, that you'll be restricting the orders to whoever can get to you quickest. I never gave potential hoarding from multiple orders a thought until Davids casual throwaway remark.

Good luck to one and all. The vast majority don't play the system, I know, but never having done an online order reading your posts doesn't make it an enticing thought.

I thought Ocado had relinquished their relationship with Waitrose? They are now in bed with M&S. No surprise there Stewart Rose boss of Ocado, previously boss of M&S!!!!

And you can't order food from M&S at all just now, so there's no collection point food on offer.

Wherenext I never read that you were pointing the finger - slow on the uptake or thick - you pick embarassed๐Ÿ˜‚.

I recall trying to online shop when it first started and giving up as it seemed too much like hard work.

Waitrose are delivering to vulnerable they'll get the info from Government in due course. I hope it does work as I've registered OH with his name and email address and our address obviously but I've registered at Waitrose as me with my email address.  Might register him as well just to be safe.

Fantantic neighbourhood support. FB pm from a neighbour friend in real terms but not fb they shopping tomorrow can hey get us bits? Another chap on the neighbourhood watch whatsapp group had our butchers email, asked him for it so I could order and collect, he's going Tuesday and will get it for me, taking my order if necessary and I can pay him when he delivers. No idea which house he lives in from his name, probably know him by sight and say hello too ๐Ÿ˜ƒ.

That's great but I'm hoping to pay by card as cash supply running down. Again don't usually keep much cash in the house but by accident it had built up a bit - witchy instincts again...........

    Wouldnโ€™t be the first time

Daughter rang this evening, did we want her to do a shop for us.  Really kind of her as it would have meant a 20 mile return trip.  As we can walk to the shops we declined.  Really kind thought though

Daughter-in-Law did a shop for us last Thursday, but we are still short of one or two items and our prescriptions from the chemist are due, so it looks like a trip out tomorrow.

Spending lots of time producing audio files for home-learning, and our back garden is beginning to look a bit more cared for....  laughing  Really missing all the music, church and caravanning.

Our eldest daughter and husband moved house today - from Leek, Staffs, to the Outer Hebrides!!  She is starting  new job at Stornaway Hospital (she is a nurse - mainly delivering resuscitation and other training, etc these days, but is an essential worker, so OK to travel).

half loaf is actually a normal sized loaf of bread, I understand its called a 'half loaf' because when the bakers in years gone by, made bread, it was twice the size of modern day loaves, so the housewives would ask for a 'half loaf'

Actually the bakers used a double bread baking tin, so baking two loaves together, and when cooked they'd split them apart, into two separate loaves each a "half loaf".

Delighted to hear you all are informing everybody what different terms mean in different parts of this country.  So when you have got your translating abilities well honed would it be possible to get across to those folks in Derby what it means to self-isolate, socially separate and get them to go home please.

Apparently the local derby constabulary found a group of some 25 alleged adults and children having a party this weekend .

Some people are utterly beyond belief  yell
