Our local P.O. has a facility whereby you tell them to stop delivering unwanted flyers and advertising bumpf so we signed up for it some time ago. Only time we get them now is if the local post is off and a newbie is doing the round. Not that often as we mostly get someone who has delivered here before. Have a word with them Triky.

We've just received our online order from Holland & Barrett [Walnuts everywhere, about 4kg by weight, give or take]. We did this to minimise the health risk by contact with other people that a visit to the local store would have involved. So far, so good.

Then I remembered that, shortly before the 'Close UK to anything and everything' Ministerial Order, there had been an article about the pressure that Couriers were under to carry on working when ill [no sick pay etc because they are self employed]; and 2 further articles about HGV Supermarket Distribution Centres Drivers ...

    1. The Couriers are under such pressure that they do not have time to take comfort breaks, so a bottle is used en route. Hand washing is difficult and sanitiser is not provided. So, in addition to the risk of Coronavirus, you may also have a 'Yellow Warning' of risk to human health from pee bacteria. So, mind that cardboard outer delivery box!

    2. Supermarket Distribution Centres have been deliberately breaking the law by denying HGV Delivery Drivers access to Depot bathroom facilities because of 'the need to protect our Staff from Coronavirus. Depots have been told twice that they are both breaking the law, risking the HGV Drivers' health/risk of infection and possible transmission of the virus to the warehouse staff, because the HGV Drivers have to pee in a bottle and do not have facilities to wash their hands ...

Repeat Paragraphs 1 & 2 ad nauseam. It does rather defeat the purpose of online ordering, without the added faff of trying to get a delivery slot arranged. Hold that cardboard box at arm's length, especially if it whiffs a wee bit ...

We have never done grocery shopping on line, but today OH had an e mail from Waitrose offering priority delivery slots for the over 70s, so we are giving it a try, having seen the queue to get in there yesterday.

She has made up an order and we have a slot for 8-9pm on 1st April.  She has declined substitutes, so perhaps it will turn out to be a very small delivery!!

Just ordered the stuff we usually buy there,  mainly the 3 for £10 and 3 for £7 offers.

Kj, check the order daily if you can because items might get Deleted User, gives you a chance to add substitutes yourselves.

Excellent that you got a slot, much safer than going out. smile

Sunny but cold here today. We have spent all day out in the garden emptied out the sheds and got my 2 Sinclair C5s out and gave them a good clean and got the tyres pumped up. Got a battery on charge so that I can take them a spin around the block tomorrow. Afternoon rounded off by joining SWMBO in our summer house for a couple of hours listening to music very relaxing. Now in the house going to order a take away as we can’t be bothered cooking. Planning on giving the caravan and car a clean out tomorrow. There are upsides to this lockdown as normally we would be away in the van so nothing at home would be getting done. Hope everyone else has had a nice day.

I have no idea how all this works brue!

We have seen assistants going round in the various supermarkets selecting stuff, so I had assumed that if it was on the shelves you could have it, if not then you were out of luck?

If so, how do they know before that time what will or will not be available?

Or is that not how it is done?

KJ. I don't quite understand their stock taking, I presume they are expecting deliveries and some don't arrive in time or suddenly become unavailable etc. Demand isn't keeping up with supply. I read on their web site that they're now going through lists of priority customers. I presume other on line delivery shops are doing the same.

Just keep an eye on your list, mine had changed again today and I don't get it till 14/4.

We had run out of orange juice ,so i ventured to our local co op, second time today, they were still busy ,allowing only ten at a time inside,,as i got there no queue , and went straight in  ,they were just sorting their third own vehicles delivery,   i,got not only two cartons of fresh squeezed orange (on offer)  but two packets of dark chocolate digestives, manager asked if we were OK?, and then when i was waiting to pay (cards only if possible),one of the staff came out the back of the store and said are we ok for these ,  and had a bottle of sanitizer and a 9 pack of toilet rolls ,said "we keep these  when we get them, in the store room for our older customers only",,   we were getting low  ,surprisedsmile

    Kj

Had the same email but it seems only to apply to older customers who are in the group who have had letters from the Government. Apparently they are also checking their My Waitrose Card customer to see if they can identify people that way. Whether slots are available I suspect are dependant on where your local branch is. The quieter branches might well have slots but some of the busier branches still don't have slots. We still have two slots booked  but await to see whether more become available. Reading your post does the £60 minimum order value not apply?

The e mail only mentioned that they had identified that we could book a priority slot from the My Waitrose data, which I presume must include your date of birth.

Yes, £60 minimum spend required.  If they do not have everything, so our order goes below £60, what happens then?

Part of the text of the e mail..........

As one of our loyal customers, you may already know about some of the ways we’re working to make sure you and our Partners are kept safe and well while you shop with us.

From dedicating the first hour of opening as priority shopping time for elderly and vulnerable customers to limiting numbers in stores, our Partners have worked tirelessly throughout and we’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to them for that.

Even so, not all our customers have been able to visit our shops. That’s why we wanted to write to you in particular today. We believe from our records that you are aged 70 or above and may benefit from a new priority service we’re introducing.

Let me say immediately that we are only using the information you have given us in this way because of the current exceptional circumstances, as we want to do our very best to help you.

Available from today, the new priority service means we’ll be opening a number of delivery slots on waitrose.com, for you to book before we open them to a wider group of customers.

The new slots are easy to book: simply visit waitrose.com, log in using this email address and place your order.

I would also like to reassure you about our delivery safeguards. After knocking on your door, our driver will take a step back and not come into your home, or require a signature. Your shopping will be packed into bags and placed carefully outside your door.

We are able to offer these extra priority slots in part thanks to Partners from John Lewis department stores. More than 400 John Lewis delivery drivers are joining their Waitrose colleagues in order to help meet the unprecedented call for home deliveries.

We anticipate high demand for the priority slots so please act quickly if you would like one. And we promise to continue working hard to provide even more deliveries. We’ll let you know more as soon as we can.

For answers to any questions you may have, go to waitrose.com where you’ll find full details about this new service. Please avoid calling us as we are unable to take requests over the telephone.

In the meantime, please accept our thanks for all your loyalty and support. We intend to always do our best to deserve it.

    BEN STIMSON
    Partner & Director of waitrose.com

    This is a service message.

You are receiving this email because the data in our records indicates that you are over 70. This may be data that you have provided directly to us, or based on analysis of other data that you have provided.

Well worth allowing substitutions. Waitrose pickers have always been fairly sensible with these and have not had a reason to complain.

K, I haven’t used Waitrose, but there is usually a small delivery charge for online orders. Tesco charge between 50p and £5 I think, depending on day of week, and time of day. However, if your total shop comes to less than £40 in total (excluding delivery) they apply an automatic £4 delivery charge. This might well be the same for Waitrose customers. It will pay you to buy more, rather than the minimum you need, and I would suggest allowing substitutes for most of your choices. Pickers are usually good at choosing something similar, and you don’t have to accept it if it doesn’t suit. They will take it back. Based on our order, and those of friends and family, you are unlikely to get all you ordered at this time, due to the ongoing supply chain issues. Normally, we get all we order. The delivery driver will inform you of substitutions, any missing items.👍

We used to go up to Leven every year from N Wales when I was a child to see my grandparents. We now try and visit at least once every other year to see my 90 yr old cousin who still lives there.

I think that you should explain what a half loaf and pan is as I'm sure most on here will have no idea.

We live about 1.5 mls from where we can easily walk to the shore, and it's just off our route home from the shops. It's about a mile walk to the sea so not many park there so it it's nice and quiet. Most use the car parks next to the other beaches but they are further away for us.

Glad to hear that your power came back on last night, WM.

Looking out of my window as I type this and can see Venus  clearly. I'll get an even better view shortly when I take Flyte out for his last walk.

Thanks for the info TTDA and Steve, will pass that on to OH.

Unfortunately she has a digestive system problem so there are quite a few things she cannot eat, such as spicy food, anything containing difficult to digest things like mushrooms, sweet corn, some root veg, tough leafy stuff like cabbage, high fibre foods etc.  So  not really happy with substitutions, having chosen only what we normally get and what she knows will not cause her a problem.

Maybe we should just cancel and go out on a quiet day to see what they have in the store.

Even a £60 shop is a lot for us, but we now have space in the freezer to take what we cannot use immediately, I think she spent about £65.

laughing half loaf is actually a normal sized loaf of bread, I understand its called a 'half loaf' because when the bakers in years gone by, made bread, it was twice the size of modern day loaves, so the housewives would ask for a 'half loaf' smile

A 'Pan' loaf is just a normal loaf of white bread, most folk up here now buy a 'Pan' loaf. A 'Plain' loaf is taller, not so square shaped, it has a different closer, tighter texture and only has crust's at the top and the bottom, which are usually well fired so quite dark. It used to be made by Mother's Pride (might still be) don't see so much of it these days but it can still be bought, not sure if its ever been on sale south of the border.

I believe a standard loaf these days weighs 800g, then there are small loaves of 400g, OH 's Mum used to buy them when she lived alone. I suppose that is the half loaf these days.

She always bought a pan loaf as when she grew up all they could buy were plain loaves, and she came to dislike the chewy texture.

Don’t go out K, if you can avoid it. It’s getting very bad now, not worth the risk. I have seen one or two older folks out on their own and it’s very upsetting, the supermarkets are not the place to be at the moment.   See how that first order goes, you can add, change, take away items right up to the cut off time they give you, but don’t forget to check your order out again, you won’t need to go through the whole card registering thing, it does it automatically. Take care👍
