Pleased to read that you enjoyed your time away @Wherenext just a shame that you didn't manage to get out on your bikes. You will no doubt be pleased that the staff at the Care Home would allow your MIL to go back again, whether not she wants to return or not!!π Hope that your kidney people can soon sort out your latest problem.
Grand photos @Francis I have not thought of visiting that museum so it is now on the list. If you want to see some grand short videos of locos in motion try the Face Book page for North Yorkshire Weather Updates, which frequently shows photos & videos of steam trains in the area, often crossing Woodhead Viaduct. Enjoy the rest of your stay.
Thanks for the concern over Flyte, he appears to have got over the problem, at least for the time being, so we are taking things gently with him at the moment.
It has been a dry but quite breezy day with mainly blue skies, although the clouds are rolling in off the sea at present. We had an easy hour's drive down to Angus to a quiet CL we have used before. OH was able to get the washing done and out before 1:45 and it dried nicely on the whirly during the afternoon.

Thatβs very interesting. We are the only ones on the street where there is no history of house sale, as we have been here so long. We pre date Zooplaπ we are lucky enough to still pay the same Band rate as we did when we first moved in, unlike our neighbours. Hence the pondering.

I feel the same way @Takethedogalong. We've been here 47 years. When we've wanted more room, we've built extensions.. I guess we predate Zoopla too! π

@Wherenext - pleased that you enjoyed your break and it's good that MiL was in good hands - so you'll feel happier about getting away again before too long.
Good news about Flyte, @nelliethehooker - let's hope he doesn't have another episode.
@DavidKlyne - before we bought this house - I got the builder and a surveyor friend to come with us on the second viewing to make sure my plans were feasible and I hadn't missed anything too horrible! What we all missed, was the state of the double garage door! After we had moved in, I realised it was so distorted that not only wouldn't it close properly - but it wouldn't lock. No good with all my woodworking machinery in there.
On the advice of an installer - rather than go for a roller-shutter door, I opted for a sectional one. If you're not familiar with those - it's a sort of combination of up-and-over and roller shutter - in that it has about six horizontal panels that fold as it goes upwards and then straighten out again - therefore the door lies flat against the roof rather than being rolled up in a big lump above the doorway, thus restricting access to some extent. Like a roller shutter, it goes straight up when opened and therefore doesn't have to have any clearance outside - good job because that's where the caravan is stored.
Again on his advice we, retained the existing electric mechanism because he said it was much better than the new ones. If I had replaced it, it would have been an additional Β£300 - Β£400 - but there was no point.
Our garage is detached from the house and the electrics go from the house via an armoured cable, underground, to a separate consumer unit with circuit breakers in the garage. Sounds as if you may need to do that.
The big advantage of the electric mechanism is that it's totally secure. No locks on the outside and it can't be forced open although there is a manual over-ride inside should the motor fail.

Just back from taking OH to have a big blood test as we usually go in my little car and had a walk around the swimming pool area not open until 20th June as it is open air but wanted to see what the charges are at around 2.50 to 3.50 euros a adult depending if you go am or pm so might try there next month after they open not sure about July and August as it will be very busy and it is not a big pool and not keen on crowded pools.
@Francis great photos of the train museum just the sort of thing we like but a long way to see it.
@Wherenext Glad you enjoyed your break and MIL ok with her care home break and hope you get your kidney problem sorted out.
Just about feeling back to normal ha ha after the Shingles jab really made me dopey so not looking forward to the 2nd one which will be done in August as did not want it at end of July for our birthdays although we are away for 3 nights in the Cantal B&B again but a different area so looking forward to that.
Hope to get out in the garden later and tomorrow before the weather gets too hot now upto 31/32C on Friday phew.

It was a lovely afternoon on Sunday when the Archibishop of Canterbury was at Peterborough Cathedral. The place was packed because representatives from most of the churches in the Diocese were in attendance. She seems a very nice person and our Bishop, also a woman, was in attendance as well. The two of them had spent the last few days touring the Diocese, visiting churches, hospitals and various projects mostly to do with helping the homeless. The weather here has been mixed the last few days, but always cold. It is a drizzly morning here at present. I am off to my shift on the Cathedral shop later. I expect I shall still need my thermals.
Glad you are safely home @Wherenext . I expect MIL will have a lot to tell you when you fetch her - possibly not all of it good πbut glad she seems to have had a (mostly) good time.
Sorry to hear about Flytes 'turn' @nelliethehooker It was must been quite worrying for you. I am glad to hear that he seems to be on the mend.
@Francis We have been to Shildon many times as FIL lived in that area. It is such an interesting place that not many people seem to know about. Enjoy the rest of your stay in that area.

Just collected the hab area cushions from the upholsterer under Phase 1 of the replacement, so that we can do a Cinderella and attend the Ball - well, ok, a Rally πNot as posh as a Ball, but a wee bitty cheaper β¦ The Upholsterer says we need to take the rear passenger seat cushion back to him for a very slight trim to remove the 'pulled leather wrinkles'. This work will be combined with the reupholstery of the cab seats, rear passenger head rest and the overhead shelf in the cab area, but the photos do show the 'old v. new' colours. The old upholstery had traditional cross-hatched stitching on the seat backs, but the plain covering looks more modern [as does the change from the dreaded beige - more of a John Major grey now [watched another 'Drop the Dead Donkey' episode last night and that phrase was used!]]
We're at the 'It'll be nice once it's finished' stage - bit like when I used to have/need haircuts π

I read the Midlands news on teletext last night and it said that there has been planning permission to change part of Love to Stay into accommodation for older people as "there is not as much demand for touring accommodation". I was very surprised as it wasn't that long ago that they spent a lot of money on refurbishing the site. I seem to recall that when it first reopened that reviews were mixed (when they actually had reviews on CT, so I read more of them) and there seemed to be a split between some who really liked it and others who were disappointed. I have never stayed there myself as I prefer quieter sites.

Just a little surprised at the 'not as much demand for touring accommodation' claim. @vbfg. Perhaps what they mean is 'not as much demand for really expensive touring accommodation ... π. I know, from time to time, folk comment on the price of CAMC site pitches, but the last time I looked (admittedly a while ago now...), Love to Stay prices were higher. Perhaps it's a case of they're not making enough profit!!
After saying that, we have stayed there once - some years ago, when it hadn't been going too long, and we quite liked the site - didn't find it noisy.
I'm not so convinced by the 'not as much demand' comment. I know next week is Half Term week (...and I'd forgotten..), but I came to book a few days away for us in the caravan, last night. I checked most of the CAMC sites for England, and at least 90%+ (a guess)+ of sites were fully booked (all types of pitches) for the nights we wanted (a bit more availability in the SW and SE).
We eventually got a pitch at Littlehampton CAMC, but we didn't get much choice on the CAMC network. However, in fairness, sites were coming up full for my dates, which might be that the sites were just fully booked for one of 'our nights'....

@richardandros whilst in Dobbies I saw this and thought of you π«£π. No idea if they are any good, but maybe of assistance.

I definitely agree with what you say as sites with a lot of "extras" are always going to be far more expensive to run due to energy costs and rising wages, hot tubs, swimming pools, restaurants etc so perhaps they are not as lucrative as owners expect. Of course they will be busier during bank and school holidays but will still need to pay wages and energy costs when nowhere near as busy! Personally I much prefer sites which are far simpler and don't have any sort of mod cons, except perhaps Knaresborough which, whilst having a pub/restaurant is in such a good location, next to a bus stop and near to the lovely river walk into town.

@Wherenext glad that you enjoyed your break and Iβm sure that you feel refreshed. Good job that MIL saved her washing for you because both my Aunt and my Dad used to βlooseβ clothes when they were in their care Homes, despite their clothes being name labelled. I used to do Dadβs washing due to this. I always remember Auntie saying that one of the other βguestsβ had her cardigan on, and she did. I suppose itβs hard for the Homes to keep checking everything after a wash. I was going to mention it to you before but didnβt want to give you a worry. I can just imagine your MIL if her clothes started going missing.
@Takethedogalong, David is right about the council tax, we had an extension some years ago and it didnβt change the council tax, thankfully. Next door also had one done and nothing changed until they sold their house and it was re-evaluated to go up a band.
Just got back from the hospital, visiting our granddaughter, who has been admitted again. The out of hours Dr sent her in on Sunday, she spent 24 hours in A&E as no beds available, she did get a bed in A&E for the last 19 hours though as she collapsed. The staff are lovely, itβs just that they are so busy.
OHs car picked up from its service and MOT today, we should have collected it yesterday but the traffic in town was horrendous, so we had to phone them to say that we wouldnβt make it before closing and could they keep it overnight. Next month, due to gas works, they are closing the road completely between us and town, our family, the supermarkets, hospital etc, etc, so we have a six mile detour each way in the other direction to go almost anywhere. (except Cornwall) With lots of others having to do this as well the roads will be clogged. Everyone locally is up in arms as itβs for 8 weeks! Just very glad that we donβt still have to go to work each day. Itβs going to be a nightmare for the schools as well.

A bit of a rude awakening last night at about 1.30am. I was woken by the noise of banging. In my half awake state I thought it could be the radiators but the heating wasn't on. Then I saw the orange flashing lights through a slightly open curtain. Got myself out of bed to see a large AA recovery vehicle returning a car on the other side of the road. I suppose had it happened during the day it would have only caused a passing interest. It woke Margaret as well. I didn't ricognise the car but the AA returned today and I could see the neighbour talking to the AA man. Most of the noise was coming from wedges being hammered under wheels to stop them moving. Wouldn't have been so bad if we hadn't had to be up early for the man installing the new internet. At least that is done and all working.

@Bakers2 - thank you - that was so kind of you - especially to take a photo. I have had a look at quite a few like that on Amazon and hesitated because a lot of the reviews said they didn't last five minutes - or required special bags (I have just opened our latest box of 900!!) - or had various other faults. Trouble is, it's difficult to sort out the wheat from the chaff with all these reviews around! I probably will get one though. I'm still in pain from over a week ago so I don't want a repeat performance anytime soonπ.

Those roadworks sound horrendous @DEBSC especially as holiday season will be starting to get busy. Good luck. The care home attached numbered buttons to laundry clothing. OH had intended to sew name tags in everything but didn't have to. We don't seem to be missing anything.
The home unfortunately didn't have a "buy 2 weeks get 1 free" offer so we collected her this morning. She's more than welcome back there and did admit to us that it was very acceptable as an alternative to having carers in for 2 weeks.
They celebrated VE day and had singers in and a special menu. Yum, yum.π±

@Wherenext oh spam fritters, I used to love them. And we used to buy potato scallops from the chip shop when we came out of Brownies. That was a few years ago now. π

Oh my goodnessπ€©π²ππππ Southampton kicked out of Championship play off final. Boro are going to Wembley, barring Southamptons appeal. They have admitted to cheating against two more teams as well, Ipswich and Oxford Utd.

@Wherenext glad you had a nice time and MIL got on well
Good day here today up early and off down to Thornton le Dale to get some bits and pieces from the Mathewsons shop then we headed to Pickering as it was one of their viewing days so we were in there for a couple of hours great fun looking round all the lovely cars there and bumped in to a few familiar faces from Bangers and Cash good job weβre not millionaires as Iβd spend fortune in there. We then took a wander round Pickering itself although it was later on in the afternoon so most of the shops were closing but still a nice walk went to the train station but there wasnβt one due. Back at the van now we were going to take a wander over to the pub but itβs pouring here so not going to bother . Weather looking better for the rest of the week

@Takethedogalong I have been following this saga a bit, I was born in Southampton and tend only to pay a passing interest rather than being a committed fan. I suppose rules are rules but I somehow can't quite get my mind around what possible advantage one team would have over another by either watching or filming a training session? Its quite common for future opposing teams to have people at he other team main matches, or of course watching it on TV.
David

@Takethedogalong - good news for Boro, though I have to admit I'll be rooting for The Tigers on Saturday. Interesting though that this has been sorted out in days, whereas those even bigger cheats at The Etihad have had their ultra expensive lawyers delaying that decision and will undoubtedly continue to for the next zillion years. I'm afraid football has become a totally corrupt sport in recent years (maybe coinciding with the start of Premier League)?
4 -
The difference @DavidKlyne is that there is a time limit before matches, 72 hours, where training sessions cannot be viewed or recorded particularly by anyone employed or paid for by the forthcoming opposition team. There lies the crux of the matter. Middlesborough may well have been practicing something that they thought would be unknown to Southampton and that may gain them an advantage. It would appear that Southampton were serial offenders having admitted two previous infractions when caught red handed this time.
Good to see proper punishments meted out. Pity, as @moulesy has stated, that they don't apply with the same speed in the Premier League.
2 -
OH's fingers ready to try and grab a pair of tickets then @Takethedogalong ? Somebody's head should roll at Southampton, it is potentially going to cost them a small, or not so small, a fortune.
1 -
Are you going to the game @moulesy or have you had your one trip to Wembley? It should be a cracking game by all reports.
1 -
Wembley for the Challenge Cup final is my one trip to the capital each year @nelliethehooker, regardless of who's playing. But this will be the third time in 4 years that The Robins have made it. I do have to admit, though, that I'm a bit nervous about the way Wigan have suddenly hit top form. Still, it'll be a great day out.
1 -
Good news about Flyte,Β @nelliethehookerΒ - let's hope he doesn't have another episode.
Thanks @richardandros he seems to be over it, for the time being at least. Sorry to read that you are still in pain, and hope that it soon eases.
Another good day out by the looks of your photos @Francis I think you were lucky to miss much of the rain that has fallen in the North East.
We had heavy rain and strong winds through the night and early morning. Because of it we didn't go far but did manage a short pleasant walk up Auchenblas Glen after lunch, and I had another up to Drumelzie Wood, just getting back before another heavy shower. Thankfully the sky is starting to clear so perhaps tomorrow will be drier.
Came across this little fella on my afternoon walk.
4 -
Sorry @moulesy I thought you had gone "up to town" earlier this year. Do you think their game on Thursday will have any effect on the line-up and the way they will play in the Challenge Cup Final?
0 -
Hope the pain goes awy soon @richardandros. Glad to read about Flyte @nelliethehooker. We lost our dog, Lizzie just over 12 months ago now.... we are just about ready possibly for us to get another dog... I guess it will be a case of 'watch tbis space....' π
