So sorry to read about the delay with Margaret's hip operation @DavidKlyne Hope they get everything sorted soon.

Today has been a bit of a rainy one, here at Tredegar CAMC, but things are looking a bit brighter for tomorrow, although perhaps a little colder.

@nelliethehooker - to answer your earlier question.... Yes!! missed out on the free night!! 😧🤥

Expensive day. Spent a good few hours trying to find suitable holiday accommodation for MiL for later in the year. The parameters needed make it difficult and really cuts down the choice. We now tend to go by the property itself before the area although there are limits as to where we want to take her. No point if she doesn't fancy the area.

Anyway 2 different cottages booked, one in Summer and the other Autumn. Both within 2-3 hours drive. Had to smile when she told me she didn't expect us to take her away this year, after I'd booked them note, as she can't be easy to manage. Talk about understatement but we couldn't not find something for her. Gives her something to look forward to.

@DavidKlyne sorry to hear your plans have gone awry, frustrating for you both. Only thing you can do is look at it positively that they are being very careful, hope the reschedule doesn’t take long.

We have had a very busy day, most of hedge is out now, perhaps another couple of full days work. Thankfully the weather has been good to be able to keep going. We are going to give ourselves a week off garden work, then OH wants to start putting the fence in. I can’t wait to get a planting plan in place, luckily have rescued lots of established stuff, and have lots of things currently in pots that will also go in. Third stage is to have a stone circle laid on part of our lawn to take our swim pool.

Went to storage and checked the van before our trip on Friday, all good so looking forward to our first trip of the year.

Over the past few days been doing a big admin clean up. Surprising what you find lurking in the depth of the bureau including receipts running back to 1975. Anyway all cleared away now

All the best with your appointments and the upcoming operation, @DEBSC

Glad to read that you have finally got your doctor's to see sense and sort out your reclassifacation, @Wherenext and fingers crossed that we can meet up tomorrow.

Sorry to read in the delay in Margaret's operation, @DavidKlyne and hope that it soon takes place.

Shame about missing out on your free night, @DSB, perhaps you will manage to utilise the next one, should they continue giving them.

It has certainly been an onerous task, removing that hedge, @Takethedogalong but I am sure it will be all worth while in the end. At least you now have a good supply of firewood!😁

@InaD that dreaded corner was turned out to be no problem in the end but better to be safe and sorry! Enjoy your stop at Meathop.

Have a good trip away at the weekend, @Oneputt. We may head that way for our next trip but nothing definitely decided, or booked, yet.

Hope the weather is better for you tomorrow, @DSB and for theocratic your stay.

It was cloudy here all day with the odd shower. We paid our usual visit to Cheshire Oaks while in the area, but came away with very little, spending a lot more in Sainsbury's on foodstuff and fuel than in any ( or all) of the shops we visited.

@DEBSC sending my very best wishes to you.

@DavidKlyne I hope your OH's hip operation can go ahead very soon. How very disappointing

I hope @Wherenext and @nelliethehooker have a good meet up.

It started off fine and sunny here but quickly turned grey and damp and then rained. 😞

@DavidKlyne what a shame about Margaret’s operation, such short notice too. Fingers crossed all will be sorted soon.
Wishing you all the best for your upcoming medical journey @DEBSC, hope all is well very soon.

We have just returned from a few days, dog, and occasionally grandchildren sitting, need a little rest now! Looking forward to a couple of days away in the Dales at the end of the month, hope the weather plays ball as February can be a tricky month but the hotel had a good offer on so we took the plunge.

Talking of fences we are awaiting a quote for our end of garden one, won’t be cheap as it’s quite long and has been recommended to have concrete posts and gravel boards, we shall see what comes!

@DEBSC wishing you all the best for your impending operation and a speedy recovery afterwards

@DavidKlyne Really sorry to hear of the postponement of Margaret's hip operation at the eleventh hour; she must be very upset. No doubt they're being very cautious, but you would have expected an issue like that to have been raised well before now. I hope it will all be sorted out very soon and she won't have too long to wait for a new date.

Oh dear @DavidKlyne , that’s a right pain, just as it seemed Margaret’s pain would soon be a thing of the past. I have to say it’s a bit naughty that this issue has only come to light at this late stage. Keeping my 🤞that there’s no significant delay 👍

A month of Birthdays. Five - from 3 to 77. I can't believe my eldest Grandson is 27! The best news is that he's getting married in August, so I've marked it on the calendar so nothing can get in the way of our trip down to the Midlands.

Last night was the start of a run of Gigs - just down the road at The Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal. A wonderful riotous night of singing and laughter. We're lucky to have access to such good groups.

@heddlo all fences are not equal! I think the quality of the concrete posts varies a lot, something to do with the quality of the mix used to produce the posts and gravel boards. We have sourced an alternative, steel posts with composite boards. They have a 25 year warranty, so should see us out! (At least too old to care🤣) we think they look nicer as well.

@heddlo We have used the same Fencing Contractor for some years. I remember talking to him about concrete posts and concrete boards. His view was that they should be used between gardens but more tradition fencing should be use when you have a public facing fence. His concern was about security as panels can be lifted out quite easily unless there are measures taken to fix them in place. Having said that our fence with our neighbour has concrete posts and boards and they have proved to be pretty robust. Except that is when I reversed the motorhome into one of the posts which bent it rather than broke it!!! Our fence facing the road is of more traditional construction.

@DavidKlyne I completely understand the view about security of the panel type fencing. Our 6 foot fence backs onto an 8 foot hawthorn and holly mix hedge, not ours but we keep it tidy (our side) and we have a lot of shrubs against it in our garden so I think removing a panel could be problematic, although not impossible I suppose. During summer, especially, we can barely see the fence it’s only because some of the wooden supports have gone, or are going, that we want/need to replace it.

@Takethedogalong thanks for info on concrete issues. We will make sure to try to check this out. I also want the gravel boards with hedgehog gaps (they are available apparently) as we have them in our garden.

Such disappointing news @DavidKlyne - Margaret must be so frustrated by it - at least the hospital sounds as if they are being ultra-cautious, though - albeit at the last minute. Hope you get your op sorted soon @InaD , as well.

All this talk of fencing - our next door neighbours are having the dreadful Leylandii hedge removed - they inherited it when they moved in about three years ago - and it's been an eyesore ever since we moved in over 12 years ago - so glad to see the back of it. It's being replaced with a nice panelled fence - so does anyone want an electric, extendable hedge-trimmer😀.

" I also want the gravel boards with hedgehog gaps (they are available apparently) as we have them in our garden. "

Davidkline, and no doubt they will be more expensive 😏we have concrete posts, slatted slot in fencing, concrete gravel boards, our resident hedgehog, badger, fox jumps over 6ft fence, dug underneath without any problems, have had to put paving stones down in the badger run to deter them from digging into next doors garden, we live on what was once a cabbage field with a badger run that used to be where part of our garden is now, bungalow built in mid sixties bug badgers still keep coming periodically

Many Happy Returns to @Bakers2. 🎂🎁I hope you are having a lovely day with lots of treats.

I can match @Goldie146 as we have 4 family birthdays this month and our Wedding Anniversary. It was my birthday on Monday but as a Monday in February is not a good day for a birthday I celebrated on Sunday. All the 'local' family came over in the afternoon for tea and cake - 15 of us in total - it was a bit of a squash but great fun - also rather tiring! On Monday we went off to Stamford for a bit of retail therapy and a spot of lunch. Our family from NI are arriving on Friday for a week and as it is our son's birthday next week we are doing it all again!

Been a bit of a depressing day. Checking my Facebook feed I noticed a post saying that someone I had previously worked with had died recently. A couple of hours later I got a text from a former colleague saying that someone else I worked with had also died. I don't think either were unexpected but still a shock.

@davidklyne I'm sorry to read about Margaret's op delay. At least they're being through, but rather late in the day! Hopefully the scan will be quick and show nothing untoward allowing a quick reschedule for everyone to get psyched up for. It's very sad to read of folk passing, especially contemporaries. It certainly brings home tgat life is finite.

@milliehull thank you for the birthday greetings. February birthday's aren't thrilling weatherwise! Although we had a bright day today. Lovely dog walk, we have grand dog at present, across the fields. Still very mucky underfoot if you don't choose your root carefully. I'm getting more used to our various footpaths! Lunch at Elton Garden Centre, always a winner. Naturally plants had to be bought - but I restricted myself to extremely reduced violas, to bolster up mine under the study window which have thinned considerably since they went in! I'm glad you had a nice day. (Probably should have made another paragraph of my doings!)

@Goldie146 sadly our February birthday numbers have dwindled over the last few years, now just 4 out of 9. Lovely news about your grandson's wedding. Definitely something to look forward to.

@takethedogalong I'm tired reading about grubbing out your hedge. Then you throw in a swim 🤣

We are needing more fencing done, our garden help on standby 😀. This time it is slotting panels into existing concrete posts and gravel boards. We had it done along our really long fence in our last house. Didn't have holes in the gravel boards, but our hedgehogs had runs under them. Here the garden levels are different on each edge at the back, 2 foot drop at tge back, 5 foot down to tge school playing field and not sure on tge side with gravel boards. But we have a resident hedgehog in both the back and front garden. It's not the same one, as there are very rarely calling cards where it goes under the side gate.

I'm getting double letters at tge start of a paragraph ocassionally again, and that in turn is causing issues with tagging someone with the @

Good luck to all those awaiting investions or procedures. I hope it all goes smoothly. Sorry if I've missed anyone/anything news wise.

@heddlo we have checked out the composite gravel boards we like to go with the steel posts, and yes you can get them, important for us, as we do get hedgehogs, foxes. I will see if I can find a link. We have had another day in garden hedging again.

All but two massive Hawthorn stumps out now. It’s been a bit like Time Team to be honest, the stuff we have found in the bottom of the hedge. I suspect the hedging was original, so might be from 1862, but the hawthorn had never been “laid”, and possible successive house owners previous to us, had filled gaps with Privet and Holly. The real issue has been Ivy to be honest, I have been cutting it back for years from our side, trying to keep it at bay, but it’s just out of control next door, and we decided to cut our losses and go for a fence. That leaves me with only the odd incursion of ivy to deal with, and no more hedge cutting, so it’s going to be a lot better. We had to move the greenhouse during lockdown year, so that I could stop it being invaded, which was another huge job. I get a bit 😡with “eco gardeners” who seem to think doing nothing is the best way to attract and keep wildlife, it wasn’t what I was taught by successive professional Head Gardeners when I was a volunteer with English Heritage, and our garden is always full of different birds, small mammals, frogs. We live next door to a big Park as well, so the birds won’t miss our hedge, we have only come across two old nests. I ended up having an hour cutting another neighbours overhanging stuff back as well, it scratches our car every time we drive past. Another “let nature take its course” friend, I did ask before hacking😁 We will be putting nest boxes up on fence, if we can find suitable ones.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments about the delay in Margaret's operation. We now have an appointment to see the Cardiologist in about 2 weeks time. It seems that initially she will have another ECG which he will look at and decide whether further tests are required. This unfortunately is not covered by the cost of the operation! If the operation can't be done in the private hospital it was mentioned it could be done in the NHS hospital next door as a private patient but with out the bells and whistles like a private room and it would take a bit longer. Given that we have heard nothing from the NHS, even for an appointment to see the consultant we cling on to the hope that everything will be resolved.

Belated happy birthdays to @Bakers2 and @milliehull. Better late than never.

I like the jigsaw @DavidKlyne. Good memories indeed. I thought I'd try a jigsaw to help with dexterity with my right hand, which still needs exercise and practice. So during those snow storms I managed it and found it helped take any random thoughts away as concentration is focused on the actual jigsaw. I gave the jigsaw after I'd finished it to a neighbour who likes to do them. OH went to a garden centre with her mother a couple of weeks ago and returned with a new one for me. It's of Shakespeare's London in the 1600s with many of his characters in it and follows the Thames with landmarks of the time. Haven't found the time to open the box yet.

Not long back from a 1 night away in the Van at Delamere C&CC site where we met up with @nelliethehooker and his long suffering wife. Thoroughly enjoyed the time, slept like a log despite it being only 3 degrees in the Van overnight(we don't like heating on whilst sleeping), and enjoyed a smashing walk with them this morning in a frost ridden Delamere Forest around an iced lake with mist rising. Plenty of water ducks about. The Van now empty and drained of water. Food shopping done for weekend.

Welcome!
