whatever storm this was today it was far worse than the last, visited a friend who has a house overlooking the Solent this afternoon, wind gusting i guess force 8 or 9, solent was very very rough and looking very brown from the silt that gets churned up when it is rough, think it was probably a wise move not to venture out @DSB

@nelliethehooker thanks for asking, our son and family in NI seem to have escaped without any major damage fortunately and after nearly 48 hours without power it was restored this morning. I hope you get your sites directory soon so that can plan your next trip.
@Takethedogalong that looks like a marvellous afternoon. Was the tea a special occasion?
@Wherenext so sad for you having to get rid of so many of your walking books and maps. I commiserate as we felt the same when we had to give up caravanning a few years ago. We had such marvellous times both in France and the UK. Lots of happy memories and I so wish we could do it all again. We passed a lot of our books and maps to the bookshops in NT properties such as Felbrigg and Bickling.
I had a great morning yesterday as it was the Katherine of Aragon Festival to commemerate her death and
burial in Peterborough Abbey (as it was then). I led one of the tours. Luckily I didn't have to dress up but those that did looked magnificent.

@milliehull lovely photos, I want to visit when the event is on, it looks so interesting. The afternoon tea was for my SIL’s birthday. She lost her lovely hubby back in November, and family wanted to do something special for her. She’s doing ok, but she isn’t driving at the moment, so life has been a bit different. It was a beautiful tea, never seen so much piled onto plates, and we all took quite a bit home with us.
@Wherenext a sad day for you, but you will have all sorts of memories to treasure. We still have all our maps and guidebooks, fingers crossed we can get back out there again.
@KjellNN hope you get your arm pains sorted quickly, I know you do like to be busy.

Hope everyone else affected by weather is ok. We went back to Wentworth Woodhouse again this afternoon, free for our postcode, so we walked the gardens and had a look at the newly restored Camellia House. Some lovely wicker sculptures dotted around, and we ended our walk down “The Last Mile” which is an arrow straight track that took deceased family members from the big house to the big church up in the village. A cuppa in the Library again, then a stroll round some of the state rooms and other areas. We managed to stay dry doing the gardens, but the storm arrived while we were in the house. But we made it back to the car.

@JimE - We are using this company. Never used them before but only completed the order form early this afternoon and I have a collection time for 8 tomorrow morning. I've kept a few that are close to areas that I know I can easily access by plane, such as Catalonia with using Girona airport and maybe hiring a car and/or bikes. I could well regret getting rid of some of them but I really wouldn't mind having to buy updated maps as it means that somehow I happened to be able to get there. Good luck if and/or when you come to get someone to take them off your hands.

@milliehull - we'd like to know when or if that festival is on again please.Lovely photos. Regarding the recent comments about funding I was wondering whether they might consider doing what Winchester Cathedral does and make a charge but it's for as many visits in the year as you want. We stopped there en route to France in 2003 when visiting my brother and again on the return using our "yearly pass". This would obviously help those who are regular visitors such as those you mentioned.

Sorry to hear about the ongoing problems... @KjellNN ...especially the pain... Carol has to live with pain as a result of arthritis, which also effects her sleeping.… she's on so many pain killers. She is hoping the hospital can put her on the list for a hip replacement when she goes for the ortheopaedic appointment in a couple of weeks... Unfortunately, it's not just hips... it's knees and spinal discs too!

@KjellNN I'm so sorry to read about your arm pains, let's hope they can identify the issue before too long. It seems that an accident can cause all sorts of knock-on effects.
@Takethedogalong looks like a super outing today and you did well with the weather. By lunchtime here it was a day of not going out unless completely necessary.
@milliehull everything I've seen about the Katharine of Aragon Festival looks very good, as usual, this year. I wanted to join in the service and cathedral tour but knew it was the day after our funeral in Essex, so decided it will have to wait another year. I'm pleased to read your son has power back and that they're safe. Ireland and Scotland certainly took a bashing.
@Wherenext the festival is always late January, usually the itinerary is advertised from the November. There's even online events. I've done a tour of Tudor Peterborough very interesting. Ive added a webpage, not done on this incarnation of the forum and I don't think I've got it right 🤔

TThe Journeys to and from Essex for the funerals were the worse I've had. Wet in both directions and the volume of traffic. However it was dry for the cremation. It was a lovely service and good send off. As a result I've given myself permission for lazy days until tomorrow 🤣

@Wherenext The Katherine of Aragon Festival is always the last weekend in January and I will post details on here for next year's when they are published.
One of the measures being considered is charging entrance to Peterborough Cathedral. One of the big problems is that we are not on the tourist trail and not very well known. There is a danger that charging an entrance fee might put people off but yes, it is under consideration.
It's cold, wet and miserable here.

@DSB sorry to read that you have had to cancel your latest trip out, but plainly for the best seeing the forecast. Were you using your free night on that the trip?
@KjellNN I hope that the x-ray reveals the problem and that the doctors can provide a solution to fix you of the pains.

It has been a cloudy but mostly dry day although very cold. I was able to get the caravan cleaned outside this morning and saw when washing the roof a thin layer of ice in places, which I suspect was caused by the wind chill. We are keeping our eyes of the forecast for later in the week before deciding when and where to head on our next trip.

Hi @nelliethehooker. Unfortunately, yes! This was our only booking so we'll lose it - gutted!! 🙂 Apart from our big summer holiday jaunt, and the week of the Mayday BH, we tend to book our other breaks just before we go. We still go out quite often (but not as often as you).... last year we did 79 nights in the caravan) This one we booked right at the end of Decmber to take advantage of the free night.... that obviously went well!!! 🤣🤣🌞

Thank goodness for the Aga. Our electricity may be off, but the old girl in the corner is topping up the heating, cooking a large joint of beef and heating the water.
The power is still off so we used the generator again for milking this morning. Whilst it is running and the house has power, I rush around charging phones etc. The generator will be going off soon as we don’t need it during the day. It’s just a bit gloomy.
The latest estimate for restoring power is 16:00. We will see.
