What are you all up to

Sadly, we live in a quite urban area, only takes 10 minutes to get out into some lovely countryside by bike, but those 10 minutes are just so stressful. There’s a huge lack of respect for anything like horse riders, cyclists, walkers from a significant percentage of our local population, we have experienced this for years. Bad enough on a bike, but utterly terrifying on a horse, and sadly we have had two fellow equestrian acquaintances suffer badly, one being a 14 year old girl, and her horse both killed. Other person survived, but the horse didn’t.
It’s not the first time this week OH was put through the wringer on his bike. He was out last Thursday, this time in Fire Service Charity cycling clothing, hi vis, and usually has cars wondering if he is a Fire Fighter on a bike. This time driver slowed down alongside, window wound down and some choice expletives thrown at him. Not sure if that particular low life had a thing about bikes or the Fire Service🤷♀️ It’s happened to me as well, doesn’t matter if you are male or female, some just love to frighten you.

A very strong case for cameras on all forms of non driver operated road users
The latest laws have been implemented for just the sort of incidents/accidents you describe or have been involved in and that also includes pedestrians
Our local police want any camera evidence to bring procecutions to the perpetrators

Sorry to read of your OH's incidents, tda. Hope you do send the relevant evidence to the police, and they do something with it. Wish him the best from us.
WN, hope your OH was able to get the tooth sorted today.
A pleasant up-country tow today, apart for all the roundabouts around Trowbridge. The site we are now on was a CL till very recently, the owner has now taken it out of the network because of all the hoops the CC is now requiring him to jump through. He will continue to keep it open next year for those that want to use it. Easy to get to, although the entrance needs a wide swing, lots of room and nice and quiet, apart from the Guinea Fowl, Hens, Ducks and Geese that wander around.

Scary stuff Ttda. Any chance of a referral to the local constabulary? Must admit it is one of the main reasons why we just do not do road cycling. I have absolutely no problems cycling on road in Germany, France, Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands. Even French drivers tend to respect cyclists as most own a bike themselves.
Dental visits today. Mrs WN seems to have survived intact as dentist feels the tooth can be saved and has put a temporary "Post" in. It will need a crown so it would have been cheaper to have the thing taken out but it is in a noticeable position so saved for another day it has been. Return visit booked for 3 weeks hence, then a further week for crown fitting. That will cramp our style for any caravan getaways unless we stay close and drive back for them.
My android laptop has given up the ghost and decided to call it a day so I'll be on the lookout for a new one.
We have been thinking of a new cooker as well Brue. Trouble is it would probably have to be gas as we want to reconfigure cookers in the kitchen. Currently have an electric fan and separate electric grill/oven above with gas hobs opposite. MiL can't reach grill and main oven not performing well so thinking of using that area for cupboard space and having gas oven under the hob where the pipes come in. Or do we move?

We are home now, actually got home late on Saturday. The holiday makers arrived for a late lunch on Saturday, due to being a bit disorganised with their packing, DD and SIL both working on the Friday, and having to load the car on Saturday am. Some delays due to road works, so it took them a bit over 2 hours from Glasgow.
It was lovely to see the children again after our 3 weeks away, Callum was very excited, and super loud as usual! Nathan was also pleased to see us.
The play area and the facilities were inspected and found good, then Mummy and Daddy were instructed on how to fill the onboard water tank and switch between inside and outside water. Daddy was a bit confused and wanted to know how long 40litres of water would last. OH explained that that would depend on how much water he used for various purposes!
DD made dinner for us all then we set off home just after 7pm. Bit of a detour as M90 was closed after Queensferry Crossing, so we had to use the M9. Great view of the Kelpies, well lit up and right beside the motorway.
Home a little after 9pm, essentials taken in, heating turned on.....house was very cold so took ages to warm up.

It has been a busy time since we got home. It was lovely weather on Sunday, so OH got several loads of washing done.
Today it has been miserable weather, very wet. We were up early to take the Smart for service and MOT, still waiting to hear when we can get it back. On the way home we went to DD's to feed the budgies and water the plants, then to Aldi for shopping as our fridge was pretty bare.
The holiday makers are not getting good weather, pretty wet and windy, awning pegs pulling out as ground is sandy, and the buffeting keeping them awake. But the too near neighbours have gone, to be replaced with a small Adria caravan, so all is good there.
Nathan has developed a sore toe, so they had to consult a local GP. Poor lad has a nail bed infection, so has to have warm salt water foot baths and antibiotics. DD sent a photo....looks really sore.
Then we had an emergency call from them to say they had returned from their outing to the "Secret Bunker" to find they had no electricity. Talked them through all the checks and found the bollard to be at fault. Luckily there was an unused one within reach, so they plugged in there and reported the fault on theirs.
Hopefully things can only improve!

Just back from a Dark Sky’s experience at Brecon. With knowledge Astronomers and great equipment our evening was a great success. Favourite bits were Saturn with its rings and the galaxy andromeda. To cap off the evening we spotted a Badger scuttling down the lane and arrived back at the CL to a choir of Tawny Owls

Not happy.....

We had an appointment to have Smart meters fitted this afternoon between 13.00 and 17.00, at 15.45 they e mailed to say they could not come due to having too many emergencies to attend.
It is a lovely sunny day, we have put off other things like picking up OH's car after service and MOT, so a wasted day.
This is the second failed appointment, last time they turned up well after 17.00, looked at the meters, which are outside, and declined to do the work as it was raining, so dangerous. They have offered a new appointment on a Wednesday in November, which we have declined as we are only free on Mondays and Tuesdays.
We are meantime waiting for a date for our builders to come and do a bathroom, for which they will require light and power, and we do not want to delay that date, so have asked for a Monday or Tuesday morning, with the proviso that we may need to cancel if builders say they are coming.
How they are going to ensure it will not be raining in November in the west of Scotland is unknown! Surely they can supply their engineers with a little shelter to erect?

Well KJ I hear there's been a run on candles, they might be more useful than smart meters this winter?!

(Hope you get things sorted.)
OH out today doing jobs for daughter with her partner on standby for an extra pair of hands. OH swept their stove chimney, in previous years it had been professionally swept...he discovered an old birds nest and years of solid soot! Then he helped rod the drains...plus some additional plugs in the kitchen now installed. All in a days retirement work ha ha.
We bought a house years ago which had an Aga and a strange smell which we later discovered was several years worth of jackdaw nests piled on top of each other in the Aga chimney! We thought the previous owner had been smoking something strange...the Aga was cracked and had to be removed along with all the well smoked nests.
Hope you've all had a good day, I've been clearing up in the kitchen for the arrival of our new cooker, fingers crossed everything fits and works, it's replacing a similar dual fuel type but costing a lot more than I would like (to get all the preferred bits the choice was limited) and the installation, delivery etc added to the overall price by over £100.

brue.....fortunately we have an excellent supply of candles, using them would free up a kitchen cupboard!
The problem with cancelling an appointment is that they then start harassing us via multiple phone calls to make a new appointment, we had to get very firm with them over the summer as we were either going away or having visitors.

Talking of blackout needs we ventured forth to Go Outdoors today with MiL in tow as she needed a battery operated "Tilly Lamp" as well as some new winter boots. Both duly bought.
When we got home she read the instructions and pronounced that anyone could use the lamp, even infertile people. Cue hysterics.🤣🤣.
"Good buy sir, you'll have no problems with the lamp even if you've had a vasectomy". Not quite the sales pitch one wants to hear.😱
On a quieter note Mrs WN spent 2 hours being seen to in the Opticians today. Funny how the bill increased exponentially for every half hour she was in there.😂 New lenses needed.

We have had a slightly cooler day and an easier walk - still up in the mountains but circling through some remote villages, Fleix, Campell and Benimaurell. All eerily quiet, with some pretty deserted streets and each village has its own, lovingly restored, labaderos, formerly the communal village wash houses. Some more stunning mountain scenery and, if you look very carefully at the final photo, you will see a treacherous looking zig-zag path down into the bottom of the suitably named "gorge of hell", which we decided not to attempt!
Our last day today, we've had some very challenging walks but enjoyed our stay in the area, the mountain regions are such a contrast to the bustle down on the coast.

If the meters are on the outside of the building do you need to be there when they install them?

Beware of jackdaw nests brue. We visited Felbrigg when we were in Norfolk last week and found that their lovely drawing room and part of their library had had to be cleared as they had a terrible flood during one of the huge rainstorms in September. Apparently it was due to an old jackdaw's nest that had blocked part of the guttering. It caused such a lot of damage. It was unbelievable and quite heart-breaking.
I too spent 2 hours this afternoon at the opticians WN and saw the £ signs mounting up quickly! We bought a couple of battery operated 'tilly lamps' at the camping shop in West Runton last week (for when the lights go out!) but it didn't have the same instructions as your MIL's
. OH has discovered that we have an original very old paraffin tilly lamp in our garage. He doesn't throw anything away.
Lovely photos moulesy. I love the idea of the renovated labaderos.

Mixed weather today. We woke to quite thick mist so was rather cool. As the day progressed the sun burnt it off and we had a fine, sunny afternoon. Went to Great Chatfield Manor where we managed to catch the first of the day's guided tours round the house, and very well presented it was too. After a walk round the gardens we took Flyte along the bridleway by the house. After lunch we visited The Courts Garden where the Autumn colours were magnificent. Called in at Melksham, Aldi for provisions and Sainsbury for fuel, where we had to queue and they had no Super grade petrol, but thankfully diesel.
Some photos from both of the NT properties.

Magnificent indeed Nell, almost worth coming on here tonight just to see your pictures, so Thank You

P.S. / Edit Diesel cost me 180.4 per litre at Morrisons Crewe today, so with a decent shop & a full tank it made my Card scream to the tune of over £130

Thank you, KjellNN, sorry for the delay responding but Tuesday is a day for visiting Friends and family !!
I got to the Scottish Bunker some years back, it's similar to the one at Hack Green, Nantwich where I had the pleasure (
) of earning a crust for BT back in the 1960's.Not sure if your family got to see the thickness of the external walls at all ~~ thems big things I can assure you so the external dimensions will be what you can see plus a great lump more !!
The thing about Hack Green is ~~ it was intended like others to be 30+ feet underground BUT that part of Cheshire abutting on Shropshire is totally waterlogged so only the lowest 10ft is below ground level and the rest is up up and away !!
Millie Please what the 'eck is a Renovated Laberador when its at home please

Busy day, mainly sorting things that needed to be sorted.
Smart meter installation now rebooked for Monday 14th. Just hope it is dry that day!
OH's Smart passed its MOT after a couple of tweaks, but the air con, which we asked them to check as it did not seem to be much good in the summer heatwave, has been found wanting and will need a new part. We have asked for a price before deciding what to do.
I have been invited to take some of my turned wood items to a Christmas Craft Fair next month, so decided to invest in a little card reader to take payments as a lot of people now do not carry cash. Now ordered, just hope I sell enough to cover the mounting costs.......£60 so far for the stall and the card reader!
OH has ordered a new "coffee pod subscription", which we will split with DD, and has also looked at moving from a PAYG mobile to a rolling monthly contract. This would give us a good data allowance for holidays, plus unlimited other stuff and free roaming in EU. Some good deals available at the moment.
Otherwise, DD came online to ask what to do to fix the Alde heating in the van as it had gone crazy (yet again) and tried to cook them overnight.
There must be a bad connection between the remote sensor and the controller, so it registers a temperature of anything from -2 to +5, and starts up the heating. Wiggling the connections usually sorts it, but this is the 4th time it has happened recently. I will obviously need to take the thing out and see what the problem is, another thing to add to my to do list!
Managed to go to DD's house to feed budgies and water tomato plants, and arranged to pick up the Smart tomorrow as parts to fix the aircon, should we decide to do so, will not be available until next week.
All this driving around means we will need to fill fuel in both cars tomorrow

Visit to Bourton on the Water on Monday, quieter than usual but still busy enough. A good walk around Charlecote yesterday, while OH found a bench to sit on in the sun. Such beautiful weather, middle of October and I was quite hot in a T-shirt. Usually the deer are quite close but only in the distance yesterday as the rutting season. Some Jacob sheep came very close though obviously very used to people. Then on to the little garden centre next door, who had a beautiful Christmas room. A bit early but very nice. We sat and watched the elves little picture show on the ‘fireplace’ for a while, lovely for kids (and us) and very novel. 😂
Going to see eldest grandson today, at his 3rd year at Uni so will be taking him out for lunch. These students cost us a bit to feed. 😄.

ABM moulesy said that they were the communal wash houses so I will go with that explanation!

DEBSC When our eldest grand-daughter was at Uni we often took the caravan so we could stay in her area and of course we took her out to lunch but she always brought her boyfriend along as well so double expense!! We are now saving up for when the younger grandchildren start Uni.
