My dearest condolences Robail, so sorry to hear that. You'll be in my prayers and thoughts.

Wifi back working properly so including photos from yesterdays brief excursion to Felbrigg Hall. Really liked the bark on the tree and as it has an unusual name decided to include it. Wonder how it got its name?
Had a day out walking around Cley reserve today. Lovely autumnal day, quite surreal as Cley isn't known by ourselves for such clement weather. Slightly over compensated in the warm dressing front but had a really enjoyable day without it being in any way spectacular.
Back home for shopping, shower and clothes washing. Sampled a home made cider made by our friends who donated 3 bottles of it from their own fruit from the garden. Delicious slightly sparkling medium dryish. Suited us down to the ground. Thinking of asking for more.
Hope the OP went well Helen. We enjoyed the meal but it wasn't cheap but I suspect not a lot will be soon. Worth it for the lovely afternoon.

WN, a short extract from an article in Brain, an Oxford Academic paper, which should answer your question.
The California bay laurel or Umbellularia californica (Hook. & Arn.) Nutt., is known as the ‘headache tree’ because the inhalation of its vapours can cause severe headache crises. However, the underlying mechanism of the headache precipitating properties of Umbellularia californica is unknown. The monoterpene ketone umbellulone, the major volatile constituent of the leaves of Umbellularia californica, has irritating properties, and is a reactive molecule that rapidly binds thiols. Thus, we hypothesized that umbellulone stimulates the transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 channel in a subset of peptidergic, nocioceptive neurons, activating the trigeminovascular system via this mechanism.
Well you did ask!!😁

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. Life can be tough I was in the caravan up at Grantown on Spey at the weekend, it was nice meeting up with the friends who are astronomers for the Star Party in Tomintoul. It can be quite lonely but as I have had the odd sojourn when they were in respite previously It is not as unfamiliar the process of caravanning solo!

Helen, Fingers crossed that all is now well.
After rain through the night it was dry but cloudy for most of the day. We went across to Avebury this morning stopping off to view West Kennet Longbarrow. On to Avebury itself where had a wander around the Stones before lunch in the car. In the afternoon we visited the Manor, featured in the BBC series The Manor Reborn, featuring Penelope Keith, and then around the garden where there is an exhibition of about 80 sculptures. The sun came out this evening and it was warm enough to sit outside the van for a while.

Robsail greatly saddened to read your post. What a tough time you've had. Sincere condolences. I echo all.the posts we're all thinking of you. Glad you've managed a trip.and hope you manage more when you can.
Helen glad you've had the op, both you and Robsail need to be VERY KIND to yourself, hope the treatment goes well. As with Robsail we're all thinking of you.
Managed a break away, it was different, weather was dry mainly if chilly on the Norfolk coast. Walking curtailed by ankle but it's getting there. Wished I'd seen the programme on Cley before we went as only drove through on the coast road!
Prior to getting away i had a couple of ambulance trips myself, serious nosebleeds overnight. Fabulous service. Now on blood pressure pills - can't think why 🤣🤣.
Heating and ancillary work all completed before we left, great work and very clean and tidy. It too had its finds 😉 the worse being that it threw up that we need to sort bathroom sooner rather than later, pipe change caused flooring to need lifting, old leak discovered, fortunately all dry but damaged floorboards mould on underside of flooring under toilet cistern..... Another thing a survey wouldn't throw up. Also had near miss with lounge fire, we had a gas check before moving. Heating guy checked everything very thoroughly, and asked about airbiick in lounge. Found it outside - but papered over in the lounge not filled in Nd they had furniture in front if i!. Luckily we had paperwork for gas fire. Apparently safe in England but on in Eire..... we'll open up the airbrick very soon.
Still awaiting hard landscaping, should have been August, understood it would be this week, promised they'll be in touch very soon
. Chose our slabs in June and hopefully he ordered them as there was limited supply. Might have to get serious next week! Gardener keeps letting us down, climbing hydrangea should be coming off next Thursday after 'misunderstanding' on next Monday in texts earlier this month. He's in last chance saloon, but not easy to find help, especially as he takes waste away, but it's the last big job. Otherwise things jogging along well. Nothing overly serious just infuriating. Communication is the key!Bonus is the jungle of veg plot, let it do its own thing as August approached, we've had a decent amount of runner beans since the rain arrived. Always a silver lining 😃
Good to read about others news and trips.
Had our covid boosters today. All very smooth. Flu jab in local chemist next Tuesday. Folks calling in for run if the mill items enquiring and being jabbed same day and instantly in some cases if timing was good.
Edit mine's a long posts and others had posted whilst I composed.
Nellie live the explanation
Robsail good to read your post. Must be very tough but good to know you're trying your best - it's all any of us can do.

Today's excitement was a trip into town to get the Flu and Covid Jabs, after finding the place I notice the person standing in front of me was my next door neighbour! amazing how different folk look wearing masks, oh yes I then noticed half the street where I stay was waiting in line!

I knew the simple explanation would be just up your street, WN. The full article is about 3 times that length, and full of long words that even I couldn't understand!!😄😄😄 However I think the first couple of lines covers all that a normal person needs to understand the reason for the name.

I've no views of hills or gardens to show, so here's my husband sowing a few grass seeds after we had cleared the stones away from the finished wall. The fiddle drill is older than he is (and probably in better working order!).

Good photo Goldie I have used of of those a very long time ago when I lived on a small holding in Shropshire and they do work.
At last some sunshine after rain for most of the week, even had a few House Martins making their way south and flying around the tops of the oak trees for insects.

Best wishes to you Bakers. Hope the pills help. Being a carer takes its toll in a variety of ways, and some sneak up on you before you are aware.
As for not recognising folks in masks….coming out of that first lockdown was a real eye opener. It was all the long, sometimes dishevelled or home cut hair, and often grey that I recall more than anything.🤣 I still cut Mum’s hair now for her, and do the home pedicures. A learning curve indeed.

Helen, kind wishes to you as well. 😁

Being a carer has multiple effects I found a carers group locally where they have short breaks from a couple of hours to go to a museum or a walk to 4 nights away with other carers without having to think was helpful. Also beware of cumulative caring where you find caring roles get added to! And above all Remember yourself!

Always take care of The Carer.

I went out with OH today doing the end of month rounds collecting fishing licences from various venues which sell them for his angling club. Two of the venues are campsites and the last one has a cafe so we sat in and had a coffee and cake.
Tomorrow we have a birthday celebration and a trip out to see the Grimethorpe Colliery Band...we know how to live...
but we like music and will no doubt enjoy it. (I quite like the Hackney Colliery Band but they're not quite the same thing!)Any minute now we'll be awash with fallen leaves outside but just now the strong winds are sending them in all directions, mostly towards the neighbours so will wait and see for a few days how much there is to do. I love Autumn but not all the clearing up!

Just catching up with all the news after 3 weeks away in Scotland. Hoping all the holidays and operations are good and successful. First day home and weather isn’t being kind to do any washing today but it won’t go anywhere, it’s always good to get it out of the way though! Had a sad and happy day, heard at lunchtime that my friend and neighbour had died yesterday, she was in hospital after a serious operation and was doing well awaiting getting home but she had a haemorrhage and despite best efforts couldn’t be saved, so shocked and saddened, she was a good friend. About 2 hours after that news our son called (they live in Macau) and we will be having grandchild number 7 in January. Circle of life never so sharp as today.

Being the only carer and now unable to let OH be alone for more than a few minutes
Being away in the PVC is like respite for Us/me as we can see and possibly speak to other people
I now have two sims in my phone as some phone networks signals not good so we now have with OHs phone, three networks to use which now helps just last week I needed to make a call so to get a signal to speak I had to leave OH in a chair in the sun, I had just finished (luckerly)the call when a member came to advise OH has tried to get out of the chair and again fallen.
A couple in a M/C on the service point had noticed and picked her up( Another couple for us to now have chats with)

Another day, another tree photo. Found on a walk through Holkham Woods today. The trunk hasn't been broken and there seems no sign of it being forced to grow in a circle on itself.
A brisk walk this morning followed by a fish and chip late lunch and home just before the heavens opened and now lashing it down. Typical British autumnal weather.

We too have had afternoon rain, and it continues at the moment along with an orange sky. Parked up on Walkers Hill CP this morning and then walked over by Adam's Grave Long Barrow, over the top of the White Horse and around Milk Hill. After lunch in the car we had another shorter walk onto Knap and Golden Ball Hillforts, getting back to the car just as the rain started.

Great start to our trip, foggy when we picked up the van but a good drive to North Norfolk. Had been on the site for about 5 minutes when I was assaulted….by an acorn! It came off a tree hit the van, bounced off and struck me on the nose causing copious amount of blood.
Set up the van only to find out that the water pump is only working intermittently. Checked the pump and that’s ok so must be vanside. Never mind will get the dealer to check it when we take it in for service on Monday.Went to Waitrose shopping got back to van and about 4pm the wind got up and it’s lashing down. Never mind tomorrow is a new day

Our last day here, and fortunately dry and sunny, so we will head up the coast a bit for a few hours.
The weather has been very poor, very wet and windy on Wednesday and Friday, impossible to venture out of the van without getting soaked! Thursday was nice so we went into Alnwick for a look around, a visit to Barter Books, and some shopping and fuel.
The site here is surprisingly busy, but looks like most of the grass pitches will be out of use now as the staff have started reseeding the several bare patches.
Our next site is a serviced CL , north of Hexham, looking forward to not having to venture out in the rain to fetch water/empty waste.
