What are you all up to

Well, East Yorkshire is having a very grey day today - thick cloud and although warm at just over 20 degrees, is quite pleasant. Even had a few spots of rain and we desperately need it - other than a brief downpour about a week ago, it's been weeks since we had any proper rain. The pond in the garden is looking decidedly sad, despite having emptied one of the large water butts into it which hardly made any difference.
Car and caravan desperately need a wash before we go away again on Monday but I'll leave that until tomorrow - just in case we get any more rain today

Much cooler here today with high cloud. Glastonbury is a very different town, we loved the Abbey, such a peaceful feeling there. Years ago on visiting the town we always liked to look in the window of a particular Estate Agent. They had a very amusing and unusual way of describing the houses they had for sale not holding back at all. For example - the kitchen may need replacing, it’s very old and has been carbon dated. Always gave us a giggle, they always had plenty of property for sale so it didn’t seem to put people off, possibly the opposite. I think when the Property Misdescription Act came into force they had to change their descriptions, shame nice to see some individuality.

We have the same weather here although a little further west than you (a 1066 battle). We are enjoying it though and doing all the outside jobs it was far too hot to do yesterday. We actually had about 45 minutes of gentle rain here but it has done nothing to the flower beds or helped the brown lawn!

So - not far from Garrowby, then?

A couple of degrees cooler today and overcast first thing but by lunchtime the clouds had dispersed and it had warmed up to a lovely 21º.
Decided on a trip to Dalemain Mansion House and Gardens up near Pooley Bridge. Never been before but they accept HHA members free of charge. Had a tour of the house where I must admit the artefacts didn't particularly stand out but the building itself was interesting, combining medieval, Tudor and Georgian aspects all in one. They have an annual Marmalade competition which is supported by different makers from all over the world and they had a fair collection of those preserves that didn't take the medals. Hundreds of them.
The gardens were something special though. If you are in the area I would recommend a visit to them. You can visit them without having to have a tour of the house. Found a lovely specimen of a Gallic Rose, or as I like to call it, a Raspberry Ripple Rose.
Stopped off in Glenridding for an ice cream on the way home.
Hope you all found ways to keep cool but still enjoyed yourselves. Hope DK is managing ok.

Yesterday was unbearably hot with no breeze at all. Today has been cloudy and although a couple of degrees cooler it is still very humid. I was in the best place - the cathedral. It was comfortably cool. It is all happening in there as they are setting up the dinosaur exhibition. Goodness they are HUGE and also quite noisy. A team from The Natural History Museum are setting them up. The mornings excitement was added to by having a party of 30 Austrian visitors. Luckily their tour guide spoke excellent english which was a relief as I dont speak German.
Yes I too hope DK is recovering.
Has anyone heard from bakers2 recently? I hope she is OK.
Lovely rose WN.

Thank you Francis. We've been up to Falkirk today to visit the Falkirk Wheel and then on to the Kelpies. We especially liked the Kelpies... We'll stay closer to the site tomorrow- havn't yet decided where to go - so we're open to (dog friendly) ideas. We were going to go to Bothwell Castle, but I think it's not open at the moment..... but then we're off up to Grantown-on-Spey on Thursday, so it's only a short stay here...

Like Francis we're in Devon, staying around the Dart and enjoying some welcome sea air in Dartmouth itself. Did you know Dart was an ancient name for oak?! The banks of the Dart are lined with oaks. I quite like the name of the yacht moored near Stoke Gabriel. Stay cool everyone....🏖

Thank you WN and Millie for asking.
I find it a bit difficult to judge, I have had better days but have felt a bit better today. The cough seems to have eased and the throat not so sore. I don't seem to have a temperature but am hot and sticky so probably coupled with the weather its a bit of both? It feels like a hybrid cold/flu. I am managing to get a bit more sleep albeit only an hour or two at a time. I experimented with always having a glass of water nearby as I found that just a sip now and then kept the throat hydrated which reduced the coughing. I will do another test tomorrow to see if there is any change. Margaret has done a second test which was fortunately still negative and hopefully remains so.
One of my better decisions was to come home on the Saturday as I don't think I would have been in any condition to drive back on subsequent days. That is a bit counter intuitive for me as I invariably always want to leave things until there is no choice!!!

Today has been much cloudier and therefore cooler than of late, which allowed us to get out and about with Flyte. Firstly visited the ruined Dolforwyn Castle, built in 1273 by Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, the first Prince if Wales. Then onto Gregynog Hall where we had a couple of walks in the estate. Late evening sunshine did not raised the temperature too much.

Lovely photos, years since I have been to Dartmouth. WN, love the rose. It’s possibly a Rosa Mundi, one of the oldest cultivated roses known. Legend has it linked to “Fair Rosamund” mistress of Henry II. We had some at Brodsworth in the rose garden.

As the weather was a bit cooler today we decided to Visit Dunster Castle. The gardens are looking wonderful at the moment, second picture is the Dream Garden. Didn't go into the castle itself but visited the Mill, the Crypt and then what they called the Reservoir which was wonderfully cool, much appreciated after all the heat. 😉
We also had a wander round the village before meandering back via Watchet and WWT Steart Marshes. Not much about on the Marshes, but we did see a male Marsh Harrier which was a bonus.
Almost a full moon tonight although it has now disappeared in some cloud.
Off to Wells tomorrow. 🙂

Been radio silence from me but the last few hot days and that I trod on a bee friday have given me some breathing space!
Still absolutely loving our new home and the village. I have dubbed it the house that Jack built. Nearly every task throws up another unexpected extra.
Jobs that I/we expected to be months on are now jobs to be undertaken sooner rather than later. That's assuming you can get tradesmen, generally men, to call and if they do give you a price 😱. I've had exceptions to this a plumber and electrician. Gardener doesn't always come but works hard when he does. Landscaper early next month 🤞this is one of the jobs to be has be brought forward.
The vegetable area is very uneven, to be re-pathed and new higher raised beds created, basically following the existing pattern. We have a decent crop of lettuce, curly kale, carrots, tomatoes, runner beans looking promising and some self sown potatoes. However between, the falling apart, raised beds it's weedy and and mess. At the same time they'll level up and re-grout the patio at the back and side if the house, and shore up the retaining wall... uncovered huge cracks when weeding the flower borders. I was concerned for OH, who is unsteady on his feet but it was me who measured my length.
No lasting damage but hefty bruise on my well padded rear as well as my forearm. I was very conscious of trying to avoid doing myself serious injury. That did have a funny, eventually, outcome. I called upstairs to non deaf 😉, OH who was still in bed that I'd taken a tumble. No response, didn't help my mood, shouted louder, response eventually "no thanks". Real anger now! "What do you think I said?" No I don't want crumble, came his response! Why would I offer crumble before breakfast?
Thats a flavour of our goings on. We have a floor standing boiler which will need replacing sooner rather than later, 🤞 it works well but enquires reveal it'll be major work, floorboards up, change of tank and shower. Cold water feed pipe is just 15mm should ne 22mm 😲 It's the ensuite shower, not enough pressure to rinse the bath 😤😡 that started that ball rolling. So no point doing any internal.work until the mess is over. Hopefully got a heating engineer we feel happy with and offering dates very soon.
Good to skim read this thread for light relief. Glad folks are enjoying life home and away. DavidKlyne hope you're feeling better, son and family returned home from Portugal last week to test positive, luckily few symptoms. Milliehull the a return visit, it was several years ago i came in, cathedral is on my to do list and getting near the top! There's talk of us booking dinosaur tour 😀.

Yesterday was a cooler day with clouds but it did clear by teatime and we had a wonderful sunset.
Today started cloudy but by mid morning the sun was out and the sky clear blue. Not as hot as the south thankfully but still hot for our area.
Gardens are needing water, grass still has shades of green but getting browner by the day. Not cutting it until we have to.
Lovely photos WN, brue, H&T and NTH. Nice to hear and see you are having a good time.
Looking at going away last week of the month. Yorkshire is looking like it's the favourite 😊
More work done on the MH, where do all these Mods keep coming from 😉
OH enjoying his 'playing' with the 3D printer, he has now started learning how to design pieces on the computer, still a way to go before he trys printing what he has drawn. He's learnt a lot about using the printer and can now set it up to print jobs that already have drawings. His skills as a fitter has come into play a few times when he's had to strip it to clear the nozzles as they can get blocked with filament.
Can't believe how quiet it's been for the last 4 days, just like it was when we first moved here. All the kids are on school holidays but not seeing or hearing them so can only assume some are away.

Oh - how we love Dartmouth - nice to see that you went near my favourite watering hole - the "DA" and the plaque on the wall at Bayard's Cove and the lovely pic of the now elderly Westerly yacht - still going strong.

Whilst I don't profess to have any knowledge about gardening and plants - I think you are right ttda. The only reason I know is because we have one in our garden - given to Rosamund for her 70th birthday by a friend. It's probably the only plant in our garden I can name!!

Have a great time all those who are away, at present. Devon seems a popular destination at the moment. Hope you recover from the 'bee' incident, Bakers2...and all the best for your 'house job'. We've been in our house for 43 years and the number of jobs is still as long as your arm!! Wehave the job of replacing a fence in September. I put the fence up 40 years ago, but one panel is beginning to lean a little!! I wouldn't put a fence up these days though...

I love roses. That one used to be very distinctive, being stripey. Bit prone to some diseases, and only flowers once. Nowadays, you can get modern versions that are more disease resistant, still nicely scented, and will flower through the Summer. I bought one called Scentimental (yuk, soppy name) and just waiting for its second flush of buds to open out. So far it’s been a superb year for roses.
Dropped OH off at hospital this morning. All systems go. So relieved no holdups now. A week in hospital, out to see end of Tour, couple of months mending up and building strength, muscles back up, and then he will be back out on his beloved bike. 🤞

Great photos DSB. We have yet to see the Kelpies. Love that area up there.

Brilliant name 😅

Rose photo. Definitely Rosa Mundi, we have one in our garden. Pretty roses but being of the "old" type only flower once.
Best wishes to you and your OH TDA, hope all goes well.
Also hope DavidK starts to feel better soon. Although testing negative I've had a cough and cold that have been difficult to throw off, having sips of water really helps the dry throat.
Good to catch up with your news Bakers2, had to smile about your "crumble!!'
Enjoy Grantown David, hope you manage to at least get to first base on Cairngorm and enjoy the view. We like the Rothiemurchus estate if you're in the area.
Doesn't it make a change to see all the holiday photos and most in sunny weather!?
We'll just be tottering round Totnes today, it's been sweltering on Steamer Quay.

Nellie when our youngest son was studying archaeology at York university he spent quite a few summers on a dig at Dolforwyn Castle. We visited him there a few times. So good to hear that it is now open to the public. I hope the access road for cars is now better!

Bakers2 Lovely to hear from you. Gosh you do sound busy! So good to hear that you are so happy in your new home. If you do some to the dinosaur exhibition I am on duty on Tuesday and Friday mornings while it is on so do say hello if you can.

Great reading everyone’s posts and glad most of us seem to be getting the good weather. Nice to hear from you B2 sounds like you have been busy as usual and David it’s good to see you enjoying some of the attractions in Scotland we visited the Kelpies last year when on one of our regular weekend stays at Strathclyde Park.
Yesterday was another warm day here so we spent the morning in the pool then took a drive in to Dartmouth which as usual was lovely SWMBO went round the shops and I was dropped off at the man crèche aka The Dolphin one of my favourite pubs we alway make a point of having a pint there when in the area. Warm again today although it’s a bit cloudy at the moment.

It's a matter of perspective. I still think of Griffons as relatively new.

Great day today visited Wells, really liked it much nicer than Glastonbury. Spent a good couple of hours in the Cathedral, a few pictures below. Had to go back round to see the clock chime on the hour. 🤣 Would highly recommend a visit if in the area. Had a walk round the outer area of the Bishops Palace but will have to make a return visit to take into gardens.
Stopped at Clark's village on the way back to the site, would you believe Trevor wanted the retail therapy????
Lovely to hear from you Bakers2, glad you love the new house.
Hope all away continue to enjoy the lovely weather.
