What are you all up to

Our son was trying to convince us to get air con for our static caravan, but we explained that as we normally get cloud, wind and rain when we are there there would be no need. We haven’t even put the parasol up for the past two years.
Cool in our house with the patio doors wide open and some shade from the woods. I did the chest freezer out and found some ‘treasurers’ at the bottom. We did consider the beach tomorrow but have decided that it will be too busy and possibly too hot.
Three family birthdays this week, our granddaughter 17, and our son who will be 50, really cannot think how that time went so quickly. Can’t think who the other one is 🤔 and I’m certainly trying to forget how old she is.

How could you forget Lakeland WN. We are going to the Lakes in September and I have already ‘fitted’ Lakeland into the itinerary. It will be just after the stop at Hayes Garden Centre in Ambleside for coffee, love their roof cafe, such lovely views.

Glad those that are away are having beautiful weather, albeit a bit not at times. It's similar here in mid Wales, although we did have a gentle breeze today. A not too strenuous walk this morning up through the forest, close to the site, which scored us extensive views especially to the north west where Cadir Idris stood proud on the horizon. OH was able to get the washing done and dried this afternoon and I fitted in another hour's walk, main low level this time. Our last night here before we head north to Welshpool. The site we are on has been quiet, although tonight there are about half a dozen 4x4 trail vehicles staying, as well as a couple of trail bikers who have had two great days out.

The company I worked for has a nice staff hotel in Ambleside. We were there once earlier in the year and it snowed but we still decided to walk up to High Sweden Bridge. Trouble was I dropped my car keys! Just as well there was snow on the ground as the chap behind us found them and asked if we had lost them!!!

Tale of woe from me as we have had to cut our near three week tour of the West Country short by nearly a week. The last couple of days I have felt as if I had a cold coming so decided it would be sensible to do a COVID test which proved positive. Fortunately, thus far, Margaret has tested negative. So we made the decision to head home today which was quite a long journey. It also meant that we also lost the money we had paid to Wells Touring Park for a five night stay. I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I told them but I didn't find them very sympathetic. I made no demands of them as I was hoping they would offer to move the booking but they just said they hoped I could claim on my insurance! In future I will be very weary of paying upfront for campsites. I don't mind a deposit but the best part of £200 is a big hit! This site gets such good reviews so I was surprised they were not more flexible. We could have still gone regardless but that seemed irresponsible and I course I have no idea how things will develop. Hopefully my four vaccines with give me a degree of protection!!!

That’s really hard luck DK. Just shows how easy it is to pick it up. A salutary warning for those keen on deposits as well, I think most folks will have to think about insurance for longer stays. I can’t recall if you are a Nationwide customer, if so, might be worth looking at holiday insurance cover?
Hope it’s only a mild dose, and that you recover quickly.

Oh dear... really sorry to read this David. I know several folk who have it, locally.... We're keeping our fingers crossed we don't get it, especially as we are off on our travels soon.... we both had it last October. Sorry you have had to cut the holiday short... 😥😥

Glad you managed to get home safely DavidK and hope you both avoid any further problems. Not good news about the site, perhaps they don't have any insurance too?! Hope you feel better soon.
I have been battling a cold for the last three weeks and testing for Covid just in case. Not sure whether we'll make our planned short break. Sometimes it's just better to be at home.
Nice and cool just now. Up in the night as our car alarm went off! No peace as noisy Magpie youngsters are squawking nearby, found one in the kitchen yesterday, newly picked raspberries picked out of a bowl!
Debsc I guess it's you with the birthday, have a lovely day. 🍹
Millie the electric boat trip looked good.🛥

Oh, that's rotten luck DK - sorry to hear it. Ros and I seem to be the only ones wearing masks in shops these days, but your experience and that of others around here makes me even more determined to stick with it - even if I do feel a bit daft at times.
Not overly impressed with the response of the Touring Park. I tend to avoid sites asking for payment upfront although sometimes it's unavoidable. We got caught out once having booked a site with excellent reviews and 5* AA grading. When we got there, it was awful and we left - forfeiting about £300. But I sent an email to them, expressing our displeasure and indicated my intention of writing to the AA, questioning their grading. I got a full refund the next day! However, I recognise your circumstances are a bit different.
Might be worth a try though, with the possibility of someone more senior being a bit more understanding.

So sorry to hear you had to shorten your trip David, but glad you got home safely and felt well enough to drive. Our son came down with it last week and he said he just feels exhausted, he had avoided catching it from our grandchildren and his wife who all had it earlier in the year but it got him this time! Bad experience from Wells Touring Park, I think they should have offered some recompense as it’s not deliberate on your part (far from it) and they were informed, as you say you could have just gone and passed it to them. Shame as it’s a lovely site, we stayed there a few years ago. For the first time we have had to pay a deposit for a CL we’ve booked for September, might be thinking about insurance now! Do hope you get over it quickly and have a mild dose, take care.

Sorry that you have had to cut your trip short, hope you feel better soon and it's only a mild dose of Covid.
It's another beautiful and very warm morning, other 2 caravans on site are leaving this morning so will be on our own until lunchtime.

Glad you enjoyed the boat trip Millie.
PS. Happy Bithday DEBSC, have a lovely day.

At the present time, I would definitely NOT book a holiday whereby I had to pay upfront, unless they had a policy of a refund or allowing a change of dates if I had to cancel due to a genuine case of Covid. They may be quids in as well if they are able to rebook the dates, as they may well do bearing in mind the good weather forecast, as they would receive 2 lots of money.

Hope that you are soon feeling better DK. I would give it a week and then write or email the site asking if they managed to re let your holiday. With this weather it’s highly possible I should think. If that is the case then they should refund at least some of your money as they would not be much, if anything, out of pocket. If they have re let, and are honest about it, then you would be within your rights to expect some sort of refund. Especially given your circumstances.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts. It was an exceptionally long drive yesterday and I am not sure how I managed! When I looked out the bedroom window this morning I realised that I hadn't closed the hatch in the motorhome bathroom, so that has been open for 217 miles. Initially I thought I was just dehydrated but then the nose and then throat. Good point about mask wearing as I think I may know how I got infected. We were on a bus which wasn't leaving for 15 minutes and the lady across the aisle was coughing a bit and I think that was were I picked it up. Apparently the latest Omicron version has a very short incubation period, something like 3 days which would fit.
Wells Touring Park was to be one of three commercial sites we stayed at, and had to paying full about four weeks before arrival. Our first stop was Cadeside and one reflection that was the one we felt most comfortable at, old habits die hard! We wanted to visit Plymouth so stayed at Riverside at Marsh Mills. Only trouble was that it was a long way to get to the bus, obviously getting old. The next site was Lady's Mile at Dawlish Warren. Probably a bit of a marmite site. Excellent facilities and big pitches but we made the mistake of being at the top of the site which require some mountaineering to get back to the pitch! I appreciate that I gave Wells Touring Park very little notice of cancellation but their response was a bit curt. After that experience I won't complain about the Club taking deposits!!!

You have been honest and done the right thing DK, not travelling on with the infection. I suppose if you only (general you here) have mild symptoms, then many will simply think “sod it” and carry on with what they are doing, without letting on. This is why we are still being so careful, masked up, sanitising, avoiding crowds or confined spaces. OH got a phone call last week, they have pulled his op forwards, so just got to get through next four days now, then he can be sorted. We are ok with self managing our situation, others are much more fortunate, and rightly need to get on with things. But I do wish some could be a tad more thoughtful, you do see a good few hacking, coughing and sneezing when out.
We shan’t be paying any deposits if we can help it. Unfortunate timing for the Club in some ways, the test of the Club’s commitment to its Members will come once the deposit scheme happens. That 21 day cut off point is going to catch a good many out I fear. I predict a lot more holiday insurance will be bought.

We're staying at Wells Touring Park later on in the summer. Really liked the site when we went a couple of years ago but we had absolutely nothing to do with the site staff..... we visited during Covid and we didn't even see any of the folk who ran the site - all the info was sent to us, including pitch number, site barrier code - we were just asked to go straight to our pitch.... we paid the balance some weeks before went. Sorry you found them bit curt... maybe we'll see that side of things when we go this time...??

Sorry about your positive test DK ,top marks to you for keeping others safer by curtailing your holiday ,several hospitals have now reintroduced ppe for visitors ,as covid seems to be on the up again
OHs son poo poo the figures when he came last week ,was coming yesterday but has text to say he has tested positive, just hope we are still going to miss it, testing so far has been negative,
I have not stopped wearing a mask on public transport or in shops as I cannot afford to catch anything at this time
Take care every body it is still with us

We're off on our 'summer jaunt' tomorrow.... Scotland first: Strathclyde CAMC site, Grantown-on-Spey Touring Park, Edinburgh CAMC site and Englethwaite Hall CAMC on the way back. Our son, daughter in law and girls are moving in to look after the house whilst we away... however, we are coming home for a w/e before going south - if only to check and make sure everything is still standing!! We did this a few years back, only to find that they decided to re-decorate our bedroom.... it was a nice surprise, and they made a really good job of it, but they did themselves question if they'd done the right thing.... 😀😀

David K So sorry to hear of your positive test. I think you did absolutely the right thing in cancelling the rest of your holiday and going home. I wish others were as thoughtful. So sorry to hear that you have lost your money on the site booking. Very short sighted of that site I feel as they have lost your goodwill. A word of advice: OH caught covid at Easter (from the flight going over to N. Ireland we are sure) and then passed it on to me and our family over there, incubation period was 3 to 4 days. Don't try to rush things. Take life easy for quite some time as the tiredness was the worst problem after the initial cold symptoms had gone. Look after yourself.

We watched the same thing when we were at Bearsted site there was also a Hurricane making a trio several days they were up,
When OH was in our local rehab centre a couple of weeks ago we were sitting in the gardens and for two days we watched eight warbirds in formation practicing for the latest Duxford flying days
No camera of course did not expect the same the following day either

I have only seen the Hurricane and Spitfire flying together once . To have the privilege of actually being up with them , in my opinion would be a very spiritual experience. The warbirds out of Duxford must of been a terrific sight to see .Not at all envious.😁.

That must have been a fantastic experience trellis. We drove home from our last trip round what used to be Finningley Airfield. Now our local airport. In my teenage years, always enjoyed Finningley Airshow and the wonderful range of aircraft that used to visit. So rare to see any of them nowadays. I did take Mum onto Concorde up near North Berwick. Only time she has ever been on a plane🤣

Thanks Millie
Its a bit difficult to work out how long I have had it although I think the timeline was as I mentioned previously. I don't feel on top of the world today but that could be because of the long journey yesterday and the concentration, I also didn't get much sleep last night, mind going ten to the dozen for some reason. We are both going to do new tests tomorrow to see if there is any change. Fortunately we were able to harvest some testing kits when the local Council were giving them away!!!

Arrived on our CL in north Wales after an uneventful 2 hour drive, only a small delay due to heavy traffic at the roundabout just north of Chirk.
New price here, now £18, but still very good value for hard standing with EHU, water tap on pitch, grey waste to ditch, and a nice toilet and shower if desired.
Was £15 last year but we were told when we booked that it would be going up due to higher insurance and electricity costs. It had been £15 for at least 3 years.
Lovely weather, very sunny but a nice breeze, and our pitch is the one that gets afternoon shade, so ideal. Off soon to our friends for much chatting, and no doubt an excellent dinner.
Hope you recover soon David, we had it back in February but had no symptoms so were lucky. We have had to pay for a few sites 4-6 weeks in advance, but as they were only for a max of 5 nights, and £18-25 per night, we have not thought of taking insurance, which does seem to be rather expensive at my age.

Today had a phone call from a site manager reminding us about the 1pm arrival, as we know the site and the road problems we wouldn't inflict an early arrival on the site. I thought it was a good idea if there is time to ring people in advance.

Regards site fees. We paid up fully in advance for our last stay and these things can add up if there are follow on breaks.
Our neighbours now have Covid, luckily we've only had phone conversations over the last few days.
I half expected the call from the site to be Covid related.

Up in the night as our car alarm went off!
1 a.m. this morning the alarm went off on the adjoining building, a gym. No chance of sleeping through it. Lasted for 15 minutes and a good 45 minutes after that before sleep finally came again.
This morning before setting out:
"Have you remembered everything?"
"Yes love" I said "Sun hat, cream, stick, maps, water, sandwiches, keys, phone, mask. Yep I've remembered everything this time." He said with a smug smile.
"Then why have you only got 1 walking sock on but 2 walking shoes?"
"Damn, damn, double and triple damn" I didn't reply but a "Thanks for that. What would I do without you eh?" through gritted teeth. One day I'll remember everything.😥
I did escape Lakeland though. Ladies said next time as they were too tired from their morning, so something went right.
DK - My commiserations for coming down with the dratted thingy. We still wear masks in shops but are definitely in a minority now. I did read somewhere that only 20% of the population haven't had it yet.

Millie - nice to hear you enjoyed the boat trip. Liked the photos but the second one did seem like you were going down with he ship!

Had an enjoyable 2 hour stroll up to Orrest Head and then down the valley. The view across to the mountains was quite wonderful. From Great Gable to Old Man of Coniston. Not a cloud in the sky. Ladies meanwhile enjoyed a ferry trip down to Bowness where I met them later on. Shopped in Booths but managed to avoid Lakeland (yippee). I did offer but it was graciously declined.
Ttda - glad to hear that the op has been brought forward. can never be too early.
H&T - You're a bit late for Glastonbury but enjoy the trip anyway.

Lovely hot day here today. Just got back from a nice bike ride.
Our through the wall neighbours were away for the weekend camping, it's been bliss 😊 no dog barking, no kids squealing, they came home at lunchtime to get somethings and gone off again for another week 😊😊 we do get on really I just don't think they realise how loud they all are.
All bushes now been trimmed or hard cut back. Garden looking much tidier, OH just got the big Leylandii hedges to do, not in this heat though. Now all my big bits are done I can spend my days (or at least some of it) pottering. Think a garden centre trip is on the cards😊
Thinking of going away in the caravan for a week or so, can't make my mind up where though. Northumberland and North Yorkshire or stay in Scotland 🤔 wherever we go it will be CLs, CSs or small private sites.
Sorry to hear you've got Covid DK, I agree with MillieH take it easy, the cold symptoms we had were mild but it was the exhaustion that takes it out of you.
