I'm quite surprised that some authorities use the word "Care" in their description. We had dreadful problems when they decided that my Father-in-Law could not be kept in respite (he was only in for the 1 week but lost the use of his legs and speech during that week) but he couldn't be sent home and told my MiL to "find a place for him before the week is out (a Bank Holiday weekend to boot). We were in France for a fortnight's respite ourselves when she phoned and hightailed it immediately back to home within 36 hours of the call by which time she had visited 4 care homes in 1 day by taxi, costing an absolute fortune, and "luckily" someone had died in one of them.

They were serious when they said they couldn't keep him in respite care until a bed in a home was found. Council run respite centre. We were furious with council. I have never seen Mrs WN so angry. Anyway we were fortunate that the home he ended up in  was brilliant.

JVB, Bakers2 advise spot on. Create as much stink as you can. Good luck.

Bakers, we are on Monarch Lakes about 2 miles south of Boston, just for the 2 nights before heading to Manningtree for 1 night as the ferry from Harwich is early on Sunday morning. Excellent CL. Just a word of warning to those that like a fishing CL, this one is for members only, no day fishing tickets allowed.

Had a long morning at Frampton RSPB reserve, about 8 miles away from us. Lovely weather this morning, 20º+ at one point. Shorts and T-shirt. Popped into Tesco on the way home for some diesel.

    That's what I call perseverance Goldie.👍

Good for your daughter JV. You do need someone who will question absolutely everything about how someone is being cared for, who is going to do the caring, and at times it needs to be politely but firmly followed up.  Everything needs to by crystal clear, responsibilities at every stage discussed, otherwise patient will just end up back in hospital.
Hope things go well for you.

Have just had a call from our failed council election candidate ,he says he contacted both the Hospital and Herts adult care and both seemed aware of the problem when he contacted ,and as my daughter has said, they will not release her home as although now mobile she and myself would not be able to cope  at this time and were looking at other options to allow her to be discharged

My daughter had said they will find other places and that I would be involved ,but it  should she thinks be untill after the weekend

It seems pressures have been put on the services by several sources

JVB I'm delighted to read you have your daughter fighting your corner and hopefully the council candidate.

I completely understand you don't want your OH to go into any sort of care - that's what they play on. As hard as it is stand strong, allow your daughter to take the lead, this is one thing you can handover to her, she obviously has good inside knowledge which will help enormously.  That doesn't mean you have no say, just that you have someone in your corner fighting for you both.

I do speak from very recent experience, and I had folk in my corner. You are no use as a carer if you end up needing care, your OH will have to go somewhere if that happens, not what either of you wants. I did notice that since they tried to discharge my mum 5 or so years ago, they have staff working at the weekends to empty beds when my OH was to be discharged 3 years ago. So be on your guard. When I said absent yourself from the ward, I meant when they say they're sending someone to 'persuade' you. They won't hang around on the ward forever! 😉😉. Of course you have your own health issues and play hard on that.

I really wish you good luck.

Wherenext I thought you'd already landed in Essex. Manningtree us very pretty. Home if tge witch finder general, Matthew Hopkin 🤔. Think you'll be safe. If your timing was different it would have been nice to meet. Enjoy your trip.

Glad to hear that you have kept at least one 'failed' candidate still fighting your corner along with your daughter --  nothing beats having more than oneself battering away at the pen-pushers !!  Very Best Wishes for getting the help and care that both of you need and deserve

You never know but you just might have given the Failed-one a new and reasonable direction for his next  few years of tub-thumping  wink

Thanks everyone for your concerns and helpful advise

,Ward Sister told me today that yesterday it was decided that there was to be a multiple service meeting early next week to,  look for a solution, as she says there are multiple options, and was not surprised that until multiple interventions by several? the "easy option" was being put as OH is now mobile?,

She did say she would not be able to cope either

PS my daughter has told me that our house should now have to be reassessed as the last assessment was for OHs and my safety with her previous diagnosis,, which has been now overtaken as a result of her latest  falling accident,

Stick to your guns JV, it’s what we did with Dad. Social Services just wanted to off load him from hospital into a care home, prattled us about for weeks when he could have come home. Right from the very start we made it clear he was coming home, to be cared for by us, with whatever aids, they thought necessary. We had to re arrange the house, and get in a few aids, but bless him we managed four years for him to be at home, safe and in a loving caring and stimulating environment, kept both him and Mum going. In those four years, we managed to keep him as well as possible and not in and out of hospital like many older folks are. But it does need a lot of planning and commitment, or plenty of money for carers. We paid for a lot of things ourselves to make things easier. Finding a decent care package is a nightmare. They charge huge money, which very often doesn’t go the way of the carers. Minefield. The CQC aren’t all they should be either😡

Had a120+ mile drive to the CL, just 20 minutes from ferry terminal.

I was quite surprised at the excellent road surface condition on the A134 that we caught just south of King's Lynn down past Thetford. Hardly a pothole in sight and not much traffic either. Comes to something when you notice a particularly well laid and good conditioned road. Not many around.

Anyone wanting small butane 4.5kg calor gas in the Harwich area should try Morrisons. They seemed to have a goodly supply as we noticed when filling up with diesel. Fair amount of heavy showers near Ipswich and when we arrived in Essex but the ground beneath the grass is hard. Can't recall the last time we had to set up in the rain!undecided

Still working on kitchen sink drains. Still doesn't run away well. Noticed that neither sink, full or quarter one have overflow 🤔 could be dangerous if you get sidetracked 😱.

Have given both plugholes, a good plunge with the plunger left in the pantry - explains a lot 😉, before and after my thorough cleaning of the u bends. Little change!

Tesco delivery today included a bottle of Mr Muscle Gel which will spend the night in the pipes. I would have had a go at the pipe outside, but that's cemented into the drain! If it fails I'll have to get a professional in. I'm certainly on a steep learning curve all round!

Ordered a new dishwasher yesterday, that has broken basket and can't say it leaves things cleaner than when they were placed in, so hand washing up. I realised on the u bend cleaning that the waste for dishwasher empties upwards!, above the u bend. Even I know water doesn't run uphill, so once the pump stops dirty water comes back down.

Never a dull minute still 🤣🤣

We had rain overnight, so was able to garden for a bit, this clay seems worse than Essex clay, or I have yet to learn its foibles. OH managed to turn over one of the  slightly raised veg plot 5x4 ft and put in the strawberry plants we bought in the village and a couple of tomatoes so I'm chuffed and so is he. Got to transplant some lettuce and more tomatoes and put in runner bean seeds. Not being to adventurous this year, but I am on a mission now to find sweetpea plants - a plea put on fb has turned up 3 or 4 current stockists, priority tomorrow.

Had a visitor for a cuppa this afternoon, nice but slowed things up when I want to garden 🤐🤐. I'm not reading a book at the moment so I'm not tempted......

Oh Bakers….drains😱 We had a slow draining shower for ages, despite all my rodding, chemicals, plunging. All became clear when OH took out our old shower base, took up floorboards for a look around. It was a long pipe run from shower drain point to exit point in wall, around eight feet, and over time, the pipe had a slight sag in it, thankfully no leaks though. We didn’t want to take up all the tiled floor, so OH carefully slid a support along the pipe to get it back level, and thankfully it worked a treat. Pipe was very clean, so all my efforts hadn’t been wasted, but it wasn’t apparent until we took those boards up. Hope yours is simpler to find.

Called into craft shop today, have had some sales🥳, covered cost of renting space🤗

JVB, only just now, because of Essential Maintenance, have I managed to say that I am so sorry to read of your wife's accident, and all the  associated problems you are having. Hopefully things will be properly sorted out during the coming week. All my best wishes to you, your OH, and for a successful outcome.

We have just had a professional in to clear our kitchen drain, which has been overflowing for a while. Job successfully done (hopefully) by a local firm, and not too expensive compared to that quoted by Drain Doctor.

Well done with the sales, tda, hope more items to during the summer. Enjoy your trip away  when you finally get away.😉

If it's any help B2 it could be the main drain needs rodding so I'm glad you're thinking about calling someone in to look at it. We have very shallow drains outside and things block easily from the kitchen sink etc. Oh what fun these things are! frownwink

OH has gone to watch the VSCC hill climb at Wiscombe (not far from Putts Corner) I think this is the first since Covid, anyway a beautiful day in a very attractive setting. He's gone with a local pal, they both used to run old cars and do hill climbs etc so it's a happy day out for them. LINK

Had a nice walk with the dog, love this time of the year with all the cow parsley out.

PS I like the new highlighted links, makes things easier!

Safely ensconced for the 1 night at Delfste Hout campsite after our ferry crossing today.

There must have been about 50 LV units on the ferry but only 3 of them were British, the rest Dutch returning after long holiday period for them. Plenty with children. Schools back tomorrow.  This current site has changed quite a bit since we were last here. Plenty of static units like chalets and "Igloos". Must be about 25-30% of the total now.  New roads made as well around ferry exit .We were last over on that ferry about 6 years ago.

Hope one and all are well.

    j-j-j-just s-s-sat down F-f-freezing  !embarassed

Had a wonderful idea--  I'd have an early morning bath, instead of shower - so set the taps to GO ! then cleaned teeth, trimmed facial fuzz and hopped and sat into bath  and darned soon hopped out again as soon that is as I gained control of the shivering blubber mass that is me.

And all because I ASSUMED THINGS surprised  the blessed (!!) immersion heater had failed & I had a very cold wake up  cry.

Fast dash into B & Q for replacement Control, house electrics all turned off, control fitted, all working again ( till next time ) -- but no diving in without doing a finger test first  !!

Hot coffee for lunch- straight from the machine but probably still won't feel a thing for a while yet  grrrrr, blasted elecktrickery  ~~  and to think it powered my working life yell

You're doing well ABM our local daughter has had to wait a month since the plumber condemmed their boiler and removed the fuse, he has finally arrived this morning to install a new one! Glad you got yours fixed, we have been supplying washroom facilities here or they have been heating up kettles and saucepans at home....they've just had a holiday where they reported they made copious use of the facilies there!

WN I am pleased to hear that you are safely now in Holland.  I hope you have a wonderful time, Do keep us posted. I seem to remember you asking me if I was still doing the German classes. No,it was only a 5 week course. I ended up a bit disappointed as after the first session when he gave us a 'handout' of the German history timeline and talked about the Weimar Constitution he then concentrated for the rest of the course on WWII. I had hoped for a more in depth discussion about how Germany became the Germany we know today.

Of goodness Bakers2 what a game you are having with your drains.  I think now that you have given it your best shot it might be a good idea to get some professional help. Many years ago when my aunt and uncle moved into a new bungalow they discovered something wrong with their plumbing as when they flushed the loo it was flushing with hot water! I do hope you get it sorted.

Our grand-daughter and I took our daughter for afternoon tea yesterday as a belated birthday present (because I was in Covid isolation on her birthday) and very nice it was too. The restaurant is in our Key Theatre right next to the river so we had a lovely view in lovely weather.

It is beautiful weather here today. Wall to wall sunshine so we have just been to our local garden centre, did a bit of shopping (as you do!) and had a coffee.  I dropped off a friend's belated birthday present on our way home.

Have a good time all those who are away.

HI Millie. Sorry to hear about the German classes but if you can get your hands on that book that I mentioned then not only do you get interesting descriptions of artefacts kept at the Museum but a troll through the history of how Germany was formed into one state.  Can't remember the exact title so you'll have to have a better memory than me or more patience in looking back through the posts on here.smile

A beautiful sunny day today as we left Delft and made our way 2 hours further up motorways to a campsite near to IJsselmeer, north east of Amsterdam.

Lovely site split up into 4 compact areas holding about 15 units each. Typical Dutch site as cars left in a parking area central to all areas. We have no problems with this set up. Birds are singing, including a lovely Nightingale and a persistent Cuckoo. Had lunch then set off on a 5 mile square walk to get to know the area better as it's our first visit to this area of the Netherlands. Very pretty place.

    Here for 4 nights.

Best wishes to one and all.
