Oh wherenext, more heartfelt condolences to you and your family. I really hope you can sort out paperwork to get there for your brother.
You are so right life can really kick you at times.
Richardand ros, please do rest up. My OH had what I assume is the same op almost 3 years ago, all very it with added complications. His leg, where vein removed, never swelled. Please don't go complicating your recovery.......... It's a fine balance between keeping active and resting BUT if you want to be out and about with the dog and van you'll be able to quicker IF you rest!
Fog has finally lifted but its jolly jolly chilly. Not a day to inspire one. Car cleaned, looks really good, contents returned. Some crafting work done and some paperwork sorting. We are now indulging in binge re-watching The Crown. Will have to pause soon while OH walks the dog and I go to the shed to ferret in the freezer 🥶🥶 to find Sunday dinner, once again trying to rundown the contents - just in case!

You were told to not do to much and listen to the professional medics when you first came home
I have been severely told off again by my daughter when she came today , as when ,OH has one of her falls ,I still try to help her up ,instead of calling for an ambulance to assist, (they have enough to do in these times)
One thing that will help we are having a stair lift installed next week

WN I am so very sorry to hear the news of your SIL. Coming so soon after the news about your cousin must be devastating for you, I do hope you get over to France to support your brother soon. Please accept our condolences.
Pliers, I do hope your mother will be OK.
R&R please do as you are told and take things easy. You don't want to end up back in hospital and It would be such a shame to undo all the good work that the NHS has done for you.
It has been a busy few days here. Two of our grandchildren celebrated their 12th birthdays this week. Our grand-daughter on Thursday and grandson on Friday. We call them our 'cousin twins'. It has been so good to be able to celebrate with them in person this year. OH and I had a lovely walk round our local nature reserve yesterday morning in glorious sunshine but when we went over to our son's in the evening, about 12 miles away, for birthday celebrations it was thick freezing fog. Not a nice journey home at all. Today has been grey, foggy and very, very cold. I led my first guided tour of the Cathedral since September this morning. I think I remembered everything
. I did have a refresher tour with my guiding mentor a few days ago though.1 -
Just take great care JVB -- it might seem like a good thing to avoid putting more loading onto the ambulance service for help in lifting your OH, but they won't be too happy if they have to help Both of you, now will they.
And don't forget you cannot use the stair lift to help one of you up off the floor should you fall in the kitchen or living area !

So sorry WN such sad news for you both, hope you can sort something out and be able to travel.
JVB, rather than the ambulance crews having to take two of you in I hope you'll take your daughter's advice and not risk your own health. Years ago I found an elderly neighbour collapsed and even with the help of another neighbour neither of us could lift her so we had to call an ambulance, she then had a few weeks being looked after in hospital, this gave us all a break too.

Thank you ABM and Brue I have been told off before about helping OH on to her feet or more precisely into a chair ,but it is very difficult to as some times several times a day ,with the stair lift that will help as I have to be with her up and down the stairs,
She has been told by occupational health that she must exercise ,they do ,do not make a pedal operated stair

WN please accept our condolences on your awful news and hope you can get over here as funerals are usually have to be done by the sixth day.
Been over to see our friend who came back from UK just over a week ago and OH sorted a few gadget things and programme a new radiator for her to use as she said not into gadgets and tech.

Thanks for the info RK. Even if at the maximum of 6 days a funeral then would be logistically difficult for us. We still have to get through to my brother. My younger brother lives on the south coast and would probably look to get over by Tuesday at the earliest.
Thanks for yours and others best wishes.

JVB66 My OH has falls from time to time, we have a stairlift and a CAS alarm which runs through the telephone (autodial) and calls on staff if assistance is required an annual fee is paid but gives my back a rest! ps I have been known to use the stairlift to lift her to a better position not so low down making it easier to raise her to her walking stance( but don't tell the GP!)
Son still in hospital the next thing is to get him to swallow (all food is by NG tube) ! as well as a bit more physio!

Wherenext, that’s just so awful, thoughts are with you, please stay strong.
Thanks everyone for your kind posts regarding my Mum. I phoned the care home this morning, (not allowed to visit, obviously), and the manager assured me that she’s eating and drinking normally, and they are confident that she’ll recover. Maybe I’ve been worrying too much, hope that’s the case.
There is so much covid about, here in the North West, at the moment, but we are reported to have “peaked” on the 11th January, hopefully case numbers will start to drop soon.
Thanks again, everyone. 🙂

WN even if you cannot get over to France on time for your SIL's funeral I am sure your brother will be glad of your support whenever you can get there. Sometimes after the funeral is a very bleak time for the bereaved.

Thanks Millie. I think we'll be able to get there. I'll join up with my younger brother and we'll share the driving but we'll start from Christchurch. Have to sort out the logistics with him. I'm not sure our presence as hand holder would be appreciated after the funeral but I'll discuss with Mrs WN about getting over some months into the year.
At least we'll be more fortunate than many people who have lost loved ones these last 2 years and not had a chance to pay their respects.

Good to hear your next move has gone ok Nellie. Did you get to see Selby Abbey at all? We were just saying earlier you have had a good week weather wise.
Tda, we didn't manage to get into the Abbey this trip as there were lots else to see, but there's always another time. We too were commenting on how good the weather had been, you missed it by just a day or two. However we woke to freezing fog and black ice this morning, which made for a rather dicey first walk out. With a slight rise in temperature around mid morning the roads cleared so we headed over to Mount Grace Priory after lunch, and even saw a bit of blue sky. Drove back into freezing for as we returned into Richmondshire and it has continued to thicken through the evening.
Fingers crossed for your mum Pliers, hope she pulls through.
Brue, we too saw that episode, and hopefully will be paying the castle a visit tomorrow, weather permitting.
Richard, I think you did right heating a nasty retreat, especially after your op.

Oh dear, WN, so sorry to read your news. It has not been the best of weeks has it? We send you our deepest condolences. Hope you are easily able to sort out all that's required to let you get over there for the funeral.

oooer, Brian's going to tread on dangerous ground now
!! I have been watching the repeated TV programmes about breakdowns in the high hills of Scotland this week { Well I do like watching the snow ploughs being rescued from Bealach Na Ba by a common or garden H/D digger
} and I always wonder if they make a smaller, inflatable strop-like or cushion item for hoisting those of us ( at over 15 stone I include myself ) who are closer to the floor than we wish to be, but without putting excess strain onto Ambulance personnel or Alarm Staff, or even neighbours who heard the chunnering and/or cursing when I can't reach my coffee
Just wondering, that's all ~~ Not planning or thinking of putting one into production

WN - so sorry to hear your sad news - it really is coming at you from all directions at the moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
And thank you all - for your words of 'advice'! I'll try to behave myself because I certainly don't want to end up back in hospital! Just takes a bit of getting used to - having to do as I'm told

Love Mount Grace, it’s so unlike a lot of the other Abbeys. Countryside and walks around are very nice as well. It’s been lovely weather at home as well, cold but sunny.
We started watching the latest series of Dig For Britain. That Roman Villa is simply amazing. Looking forward to next episode.Good to hear your Mum is ok Pliers. Hope your next few weeks improve Robsail, so worrying for you. Fingers crossed that all your arrangements work out WN. Not the best time to have to travel.
I hope you and your wife can get sorted out as well JV. Worrying for you with all the falls, but you need to keep safe as well.2 -
Its another of those cracking days, just caught the SAR returning this morning, not many folk about probably lining the route for the Stubbington 10k which took place this morning, never been into running, even at school for cross country we knew the short cuts so would stop and share a Woodbine behind the trees, those were the days, but stopped smoking in my 40's.
Going to check out our daughters old caravan PM today, she has a couple of 4.8 kg cylinders which might be Butane, but could come in useful as i see Calor LPG is still in very short supply, their caravan has a problem with the floor delaminating so it yawns as you are driving along, probably only good for scrap.

Progress made.
Having to catch a ferry as alternative too much hassle in time frame allowed. Can't say that aspect thrills me but it makes sense and will be less stressful, hopefully. It was good to find out some friends of my brother had been around and helped him out.
Thank you one and all for best wishes.

Yes there is! one is called a manger cushion lift........and the other is stander i think! means that the Alarm staff only have to concentrate on safety steading! both are battery powered! And a vacum flask for the coffee!

We started watching the latest series of Dig For Britain. That Roman Villa is simply amazing. Looking forward to next episode.Tda, we too liked MGP, but yesterday was not exactly a good day for walking around the countryside. We finished watching Dig for Britain this evening, lots of very interesting results, and it has given us more ideas for places to visit in our travels around this fascinating country of ours.
Visited another Abbey, church and Castle today. Parked up and went round Easby Abbey before a walk along the the old line by the River Seals before going into St Agatha's church to see the wall paintings. After lunch tried to get parked in Richmond Market Square but not a free space could we find as it was so busy, so ended up in Lidl CP. After a quick round of the store we had time to go into the town and around the Castle. Will go back another day midweek for a proper look at the town itself.

There’s a small car park down by the River that’s often quiet Nellie. It’s called Yorke Place. It’s quite a steep walk back up into town, so lots of folks don’t use it. We always go in there with MH. Should you be tempted, the Fish and Chip shop opposite the indoor market hall, in the Square, is very nice.

Yep, we've been there and also half way up the hill from the station car park outside the church has free parking so might be worth trying there. The one Ttda mentions allows you to walk along the river and you can then climb the hill below the castle to get to town. It's a nice town.
Mind you if MiL can climb the hill you two can Nellie.

That's OH's home turf. Used to spend many happy hours in Richmond when we visited FIL. We also like Mount Grace Priory. It is such a lovely atmosphere there.
