What are you all up to

I think shoppers can be roughly divided into those who will do all their shopping at Lidl/Aldi, those who would not seen dead in them, and those who buy what they like, and know what they like, from the various shops.
I used to see a number that I recognise as using both when I visited both one after the other on the same day.

Covid has saved us a fortune.😀 Although we seldom frequented Lidl as it is the other side of town, we often visited one of the 3 Aldi within 8 miles of us. Invariably I / we were tempted into one of the weekly offers, often something for the granddaughter. Since lockdown I / we have almost exclusively used online shopping, along with village outlets. Mainly it has been Tesco.com, as it has most consistently had slots available. Looking forward to this all being over, so we can shop as we did before, although it will almost certainly cost us more.😂

It will probably cost us a lot less Steve but as I'd planned to start food deliveries before Covid arrived I'm going to stick with the one that's been successful for us (Waitrose.) But I really miss being able to shop in general. I feel we've gone back to the horse and cart days except it's a van. The doorstep milk deliveries have continued as usual but it took six months to get into their web site to order extras! We now have a local farm doing fresh milk deliveries, they have milk machines at various points and customers are given glass bottles which are filled up if they want home deliveries.

It was quite eerie this morning.
The mist hung over the village and I expected to see Marleys Ghost appearing at any moment. There was no bird song and more strangely no sound of traffic from nearby roads. No dogs barking, no neighbours up and about. If it had not of been light I might have thought I had got up in the middle of the night.
Still dreary now. Not much doing today. A bit of cooking. No more shopping for at least a week, I hope.

I am in mid floor laying at the moment, just been allowed a 10 minute break for a cup of tea. Important to get the floor finished by the end of the 25th, as we will not be allowed back here until at least the 11th, and apparently nobody wants a half finished floor!
Nice dry day here, even some sun. OH picked up our Christmas order at midday, huge queue to get into Morrisons, but no queue at the order pick up point. We should have all we need now for quite a while as the freezers are also full.

😱 will you have to work on 25th? I hope you've negotiated a decent renumeration 🤣🤣.
More folk down here going into tier 4 from Boxing Day.
Heard neighbour's parents have it. Been shielding from the beginning but he had to go to podiatrist. Family have done shopping, washed it before delivery, worn masks and stood back.
Glad takethedogalong's mum has had her first jab. Did you get date for follow up? Mr Milliehull had his quite early. Hope neither has reactions and the tracking device 😉 works well 🤣🤣🤣

Yep, got the second jab date thanks Bakers. Have to say, our local GP and NHS have done very well. It was all very organised yesterday, even had a follow up email around side effects today.
On the negative side, a dear friend who survived catching it in hospital, six weeks on oxygen, had a C19 related heart attack yesterday. Tough old blighter, still fighting, but it’s awful not being able to see them and give our personal help and support.
I dread each day’s figures at the moment. Spent four hours today sanitising and cleaning after having some new radiators fitted. Couple of good lads, masked and careful, all doors and windows open. They are dreading going into Tier 4 as it will end the bit of work they can do.

I quite like Aldi for certain thing, but the trouble is, you can't always get everything you want from Aldi. We usually start at Aldi and then go on to Asda or the local Co-Op to get the things we can't get at Aldi. Also I have been pleased with the quality of the stuff from Aldi, although generally we find the fresh fruit and salad not as good... and the place to go for bakery is definitely Lidl. Some of the things I especially like from Aldi..... the more expensive Prosecco, Abbot & Broome Handwash (as good as some of the 'designer' stuff), good value chocolate.... and some of the fresh meat products ae worth a look....

As I couldn't get either a delivery slot or click and collect slot anywhere we decided to brave Aldi (haven't really been into supermarkets for months). I was dreading all the crowds - not good at the best of times and certainly not now - so we went on Monday evening about 8.30 pm. I think there were more staff than shoppers! Everything was fully stocked so we got all we needed. Daughter rang this morning and said that she and SIL did their food shop at M&S and Aldi yesterday. No queues and plenty to stock. She was amazed that in M&S not only was the food hall open but the whole of the ground floor selling ladies and children's clothes. We are in tier 4 and it should be just essential stores open
. Men's clothes are obviously not classed as essential as they are on the upper floor which was closed.
.Bakers2 OH had a slight reaction for a few hours a couple of days after his jab, he felt very tired and achy and had a headache but woke up the following morning feeling absolutely fine. I think if there is a tracking device the people monitoring it must be terribly bored as other than going to Aldi on Monday evening he has only been in the garden

Brue You deserve a medal for all you are doing for your elderly neighbours. I hope they manage to cook their Christmas dinner without mishap.

Really wet and muddy walk with Rosa today
,After a visit from my masked up and face shielded carer daughter today,,in between her "clients?" visits, has decided that after xmas she and partner ,will be now taking on us, Him for shopping, and her as carer, as she is not restricted by covid tiers for visits, with the latest strain running, it seems, out of control in the home counties and apart from me taking Rosa for country walks only ,must stay indoors

late lunchtime walk for Rosa after "carer" visit ,met a couple of our international neighbours (out in the country)both ladies in their late 60s (i think) one from Norway and one from Sweden and the lady from Sweden ,said she is glad not to be "at home" as they cannot have any restrictions imposed as the UK, or as Norway because in Sweden it is against the law to impose anything that could infringe on the freedom of citizens, which is the main reason their is problems with controlling the virus ,she says they have been trying to get it amended but of course their is a lot of oposition from especially the young, who as they think are invulnerable

Thank you Millie, we're not really doing much more than many are doing this year. We took the latest food delivery round to our neighbours, one of them had retired to bed for the day and the other one looked a bit woebegone..first Christmas ever on their own and our small bit of help doesn't seem like much. We'll make sure to take them a few treats on Christmas Day along with the turkey etc. But this is going on all over the country so we're all affected, sadly. It was a relief to hear we're going into tier 3 along with Bristol (again.) One of my nephews who has been trying to keep his restaurant going has had a few good days with food now back to takeways after the 26th.
Glad to hear you got your shopping done. Also glad to hear JVB will have some help with shopping, it just isn't safe for some at the moment. I think I heard 1 in 3 are virus carriers, roll on the Oxford vaccine!
Very wet here, managed to do a dog walk before the heavens opened, fire lit now, slumped in front of the TV!

Have just renewed next year's building and contents insurance , told the lass on the phone that I wasn't happy with the price increase. Surprise surprise she said we can offer you a £85 discount. Will now be paying less than this year 👍. I go through this calamity every December , but every little helps .😀😀.

Roofer back today to remove all the rubble and cement in the ridge tiles. He also replaced a few slates that had a crack in them. Roof looking good now. They certainly had the best day yesterday to do the bulk of the work, today was dull and freezing cold.
Popped out to B&Q this afternoon to pick up a few things for jobs to do under the new lockdown. Thought they would be closed as non essential but no they are still going to be open, never mind saves us going after Christmas.
Still really cold here so I'm off to make chilli for dinner

Daughter has just sent a message to say her MIL has driven to Ipswich to spend Christmas with her daughter. Said it was OK as they are in a support bubble. It was pointed out to her that SIL and our daughter are her support bubble as they are local and have been supporting her for months. She ignored them and went anyway

We know of an individual, living alone, who will have 2 different bubbles of single people, one on Christmas Day and the other on Boxing Day including travelling across into England. This after having her hairdresser into the house plus a cleaner and some visitors who are not in a bubble yet is complaining about having to wait for a vaccine.
There's not a lot of Christmas cheer for said individual. What a thoroughly miserable day. Rained constantly. Garden looking flooded. I think we've hit high water mark. I just hope it's not tidal.😱

OH did our home insurance yesterday. Last year we were with Halifax, this year it was Bank of Scotland. The renewal was some £75 more than this year, but it is a very good policy, so OH tried Halifax again and got a price only £15 more than this year.
Halifax and BOS are of course the same bank.
So she rang BOS to say she had a lower quote and was not inclined to renew at the price they were offering. They then offered a reduction of a paltry £15, so she told them to cancel from the renewal date and then took out the Halifax policy, which is identical. Just does not make any sense!
Anyway, all sorted now.
Next thing is the VED on the Touareg on 01/01. And deciding what to do re caravan servicing.

A similar setup has recently open on the road (A590) out of Ulverston towards Dalton in S Cumbria.

It has teemed with rain all day here and is still raining. Apparently some local roads are flooded as the drains cant cope. Luckily our 'tree ' man came a couple of days ago and cut back our beech and yew hedges, buddleias and various other shrubs and bushes. The garden looks much neater now. OH had an appt for his B12 injection so left me with a list. I communicated through the conservatory window - left a bit, right a bit etc!!

KJ - We have used a mobile service engineer the past couple of years and he has been excellent. We just had to move the van across to the middle of the drive and he carries out a full service. He was here in November and done a good job that’s twice we have used him now and my sister has also used him for her caravan service. He is based down here in Ayrshire not sure if he does up your way but can give you the details if you would like.

As it happens we went to Aldi today for our final Xmas shopping, followed by a couple of walks in Brereton Heath Country Park. Got back to the van in time to hear the latest Covid update. As Cheshire is going into Tier 3, and we are still in Tier 2 at home we decided that we would head home tomorrow when the forecast is for decent weather and not delay our return till Boxing Day or after, when sleet and high winds are forecast.

Not seen or heard of anybody from Cornwall today -- Wonder if they are all digging holes or scouring thro the gravel looking for this new-found dark green mineral aka "Kernowite " that has only just been discovered in a rock sample mined very recently in about 1800 AD !!
I Suppose we can expect the Cornish Constabulary to be manning the borders to stop us going in armed with spades, griddles and such. Heaven help those 5 to 8 year olds heading for the Cornish Sandcastle Championships next year ~~ they could end up with Criminal Records, and I don't just mean those by Cliff Pilchard so there

Actually, WN, I was commenting, in my [ab]normal humorous way about the discovery of that strange entity, Kernowite which has been discovered in a rock taken from Wheal Gorland mine in St Day in about 1800.
If it's that rare, and previously unknown, well, it could be worth an enormous amount, perhaps as much as three weeks on a serviced, seasonal pitch on any Club site
