What are you all up to

Entirely agree Wherenext. I think for our own mental health we need to see what the ‘outside world’’ is like now and just be sensible. For the first time since lockdown we ventured out to our local garden centre and had lunch there today. To be frank, I (particularly) have been worried about it, too much as it appears; we sat outside, the tables were well spaced and they were sterilised after each customer. After all my worries I felt confident. We have had one trip out in the caravan in July, our first since March, we always use our own facilities anyway so that was no different. We also found that it was better than we expected in terms of ‘what to do’ - we were able to book a NT place and have a look around the garden, all sensible and socially distanced. We went to see the ospreys at Rutland water, distancing and other requirements worked well. As you say, I don’t think we would have done anything differently in normal times, except hand gel wouldn’t have featured so much!! We are looking forward to a couple more trips to North York Moors and Northumberland where it will be more days out in the countryside and quiet beaches. Things are complicated just now, we should all just do what we are comfortable with, I think. Although I couldn’t stand the thought of not going anywhere for the next year perhaps!

We woke up to actual rain this morning - yippee!

But by the time we'd had breakfast it might not have happened at all - not much use for the grass and plants.

It's been a sunny and pleasantly warm day as opposed to the oppressive humid heat we've had at home. Where we are, just inland from Perranporth, there is an extensive network of byways and footpaths, ideal for shady walks on days like this and not a soul in sight apart from fellow walkers. For those who know the area we strolled down to the village of Bolingey where there is a cooling stream running alongside the lane so Lady and Ralph take full advantage of that.
Happy Days!

It just keeps getting better and better, what have I done to deserve such good fortune?
A trip to the Old Man of Coniston, Brim Fell, Swirl How and along to Weatherlam. Possibly the best day out I've had. Cool winds on the tops.
In sitting outside in the Black Bull toasting you all.
Thanks for the comments everyone.
Cheers

CS - In keeping with results day I personally think your day should be downgraded from "Possibly the best day I've had" to "Must do better". From what I've been told Teachers have a tendency to over-exaggerate.😁
Goldie - You are forgiven due to your past efforts in keeping us lot fed. Have another G&T.

Another very humid, and warm, day here, we are both feeling very limp this evening! Painter arrived bang on 9am, offered to move van to make life easier for him, then found mover would not work.

I think it is the battery, but will need to check.......no mover = no planned holiday.
OH is now muttering about a small MH again!
I went down to DD to dismantle stuff in her garage, OH went shopping at nearby Lidl, then joined us at DD's house.
Then painter rang to say there was a delivery.......the handrails for the Guide Hall......so she had to go home and painter put them in the house for her.
DD had bad news, her sick budgie, at vet hospital, was getting worse, so decision made to put her to sleep. She went off there to say goodbye in our Smart, so we stayed till SIL came home from work, then left him with a very tired Callum....he had no nap today.
Painter has finished, all looks good, but found we have a wasps nest high up, so will need to see if they have managed to break into the loft

Sorry to hear that bit of news, Kj - it doesn't matter if it's a dog, cat or budgie, it's always sad to lose an animal companion. I heard from the old lady whose dog I walk for the Cinnamon Trust today that Judy (the spaniel) is very poorly, not eating or drinking and rushed into the vets to be put on a drip and for scans. A very worrying (and expensive!) time. Don't know what she'll do if she loses her. I'm keeping in touch and hoping for the best.

I fully agree with your moderation. However due to the efforts of today coupled with the few pints I've had my ability to walk is currently impaired. I won't be appealing your decision and will retake the exam in a few weeks

I also managed today to complete a task I've been wanting to do for a good number of years. I paid my respects and my best salute to the crew of a RCAF Halifax who crashed on the 22nd October 1944 in a training flight on Great Carrs.
Lest we forget.

Because of the atmospheric conditions our WiFi has been very hit and miss so not been able to keep up with all the posts. We've had 3 nights of tremendous thunder and lightning storms round about but only had heavy rain last night for about '8 hours in total. Today was a good bit cooler thankfully, and we moved on down to Portway, our 5th CL of this trip so far. We did have a short shower this afternoon but at least the van is a good bit cooler so sleep should come more readily tonight

"P.S there is right way to fly a Union Jack isn’t there? Do I have to go over to someone obviously in distress ? I think I’ve got it right - it’s a long time since I was a Sea Ranger."
Goldie - just a technicality - it is only referred to as a "Jack" when flown from the jackstaff of a warship at anchor - otherwise it's the Union Flag.
Sorry, but I have a thing about flags

A very thick mist over the dunes this morning so it was extra hard to keep track of the dogs - and when Murphy appeared we had to make double sure we were bringing the right ones home! Lady decided quickly that the attention of the two boys was not worth hanging around for!

A neighbour brought me a bucketful of plums yesterday, so have got them on the hob ready for some jam making...which I have avoided this year thanks to the loss of our only plum tree. There must be some law around which fits this. OH then brought in a big tray of shallots and after a "light" discussion has agreed to pickle them himself!

We have just arrived on site here and it is roasting glorious day luckily only a 50 min tow from home as I don’t think we could have sat in the car much longer. Not much planned tonight Cadac dinner then just sit outside and enjoy the weather.
have a nice weekend all0 -
Now I'm trying to relax after discovering that "my" solicitor has ceased to be
. So I had a "phone" appointment this lunch-time. Hardly understood a word, alas, toooo technical for me. Now I've got to try to get a 'translator' who speaks English not Legalese. The replacement company, from Derby , seem very keen to hang on to yours truly so they have instigated everything even down to setting me up with a nice-voiced lady who seemed rather like a Secondary School teacher addressing the class muppet !! I think I need ( deserve ) another coffee and macaroon

I have had a quick trawl looking at cottages for end of September. Found two possibles within 30 seconds, not bad given what we need in terms of pooch and Accessibility, so I don’t think it’s going to be as bad as I thought. Don’t mind paying more this year either, given that it might be only chance we get to all get away together for a while.🤞

Francis, your lucky its a very grey day here. Misty and damp this morning then a bit dryer this afternoon so we went out for a bike ride.
Yesterday was a busy day, OH had an appointment for an eye check (Specsavers) all very well organised, temp check on entry, only 6 folk on the shop floor at any one time, so I had to wait outside until he was 'picking' his new frames. Had a bit of a walk around town while that was happening. Town very quiet but shops were open and folk seem to be observing the rules. New frames and lens ordered ouch! thankfully only required every 2 years. I was required as driver (drops in eyes) and of course to approve the frames.

Then a bit of shopping for our elderly neighbour, followed by collecting the MH from getting its tow bar fitted. Dropped into the workshop who serviced our caravan to see if he could fit a satellite dish to the MH. Now all booked in for mid September.
Not long returned home then our eldest son and his family arrived. What a time we had, Gkids have grown so much since February unfortunately so have their parents but not in the same direction

was great seeing them all again. Rotten news about France being on the naughty step, really sad that we won't be going now
will have to have a look at what we can do in the UK now. 2 -
Sad to hear you're not going to France TG. I know the feeling but to be honest there are far worse things around. We've arranged a 3 week tour of County Durham, staying at an independent site, A CL south of Stirling and a week in D&G on the Solway coast, again Independent site. We intend to enjoy it whatever. I'm sure you'll enjoy your new toy.
I wrote a while back to our insurers asking for a refund. I had to pay for the 31 day period to be extended and for my medical problems. As we didn't get to go I felt a refund was due and after a conversation with a handler at the company, one was finally agreed. If you don't ask they won't volunteer.
Nice sunny day from mid morning. New GTech hedge trimmer arrived, just 24 hours after ordering it. Get to play with it tomorrow.😱😀
Plum jam? Mmmmm. Yes please Brue, especially with large bits of plum left in it.
1 -
Yes I've left the large bits in WN, do call in and collect your jar when passing...

Had a take away meal from the pub tonight although OH said it was crowded in and around the pub, it always is at weekends, just hope things stay ok.
I looked at holiday cottages earlier on but found so few dates in the SW that we'll have to stick with the M/H at the moment. Short break in Devon again soon and then a long trip and stop offs to see son and family later, half expecting that might not happen but will try our best.
Chatting to my Maltese friend yesterday afternoon about her planned trip to see family thwarted by the evening news, hope all those affected can make alternative plans.
1 -
Thanks Brue.😀 Actually, finding somewhere around the Broadway/Evesham area might be a good idea at the moment. Great plum area. I think there's a CL somewhere on a plum orchard. There used to be one in Burnham Overy Town in Norfolk. Gosh, you've got me plum mad now.
Wonder how Oneputt is? Hope he's just taking a break.1 -
Evesham is my old part of the UK as it is where I was born but spent more time in the Malvern area, as you say WN great plum area especially the Pershore plum festival might have been cancelled for this year. We have had a lot of plums around here and folks not bothered to pick them, Mirabelles and loads of dark blue/purple ones similar to the Pershore ones. friends of ours had a load given to them and yes like you brue a lot of jam was made even managed to get a jar of some wild cherry plums very good too.
1 -
Not directly related but it seems there have been a few problems with holiday accommodation lets in the last week or two. People being phoned at the last moment to say their accommodation is no longer available or double booked! Big companies like Hoseasons involved. Hope they are not cancelling and trying to relet at an enhanced rent!!!

We were wondering the same about OP, as he's not posted for a while.
I think the CL that you are thinking about is Walsgrove Fm, under Pershore, No1461 in SD

A pleasant cooler day with the sun coming out late in the afternoon. Drove over to Wigmore and walked up to the castle, a former Mortimer stronghold, what one might call a romantic ruin. From there we went to Leintwardine to view a CL and then back to Shobdon where we had a walk to see the Arches, the decorative doorways from a 12th C church.
1 -
Thanks Nell. We did have a late August few days in the area some years ago and remember picking plums and leaving money in honesty boxes but the CL we stayed is now closed. I remember passing one on the way homewards not so long ago and I think you are right. Must make a note.

I always think it rather a shame that Wigmore hasn’t been excavated more, and that EH decided to leave it very much to visitor imagination. We haven’t been for a while, but it’s a good one to get away from the crowds.😁 Have you read Ian Mortimer’s fantastic book about Roger Mortimer, Greatest Traitor? I read it alongside a biography of Isabella of France, both really interesting.
Another warm day here, couple of dog walks, bit of gardening, watched Criterium highlights.... wondering if Tour will be affected at all🤔
0 -
Yes I saw that in the press. I think it was companies allied to one group. Not good for those who it affected though. I was rather surprised to find two possibles that might suit us, as we need somewhere that is accessible and will take a dog, which can sometimes be a problem. We like en-suites as well, makes it easier for Mum. We aren’t bothering too much about price, and it will be a last minute booking, but I will haggle. Sometimes if it’s a big house and you agree to only use a couple of bedrooms, you can get a good deal last thing. Interesting on the cleaning side, access is from 7pm in evening, and out by 9am on last day, so they must be really going to town on enhanced cleaning routines. I look for the Covid Secure information as well.
