Zoos, wildlife parks and animal charities are really struggling at the moment, lots of the dedicated staff are sleeping over at the zoos, maintaining the care and daily requirements.

There are lots of knock on effects that one tends not to think about until it’s either highlighted in news, or you need something. Channel4 news did a big report on the fresh veg and fruit harvest last night, currently 75% down on workers required to do the harvesting. Not just the actual pickers either, but the support workers required as well, those who understand the specialist equipment, and organise things.

I don't think TDA said that at all David, as any long term user of pain killers will know you could only buy two packs at any one time even before this present state and that is TDA was alluding  to.

But it has been in short supply due to people stocking up for the virus and some theories about Ibuprofen 'helping' the virus hence Ibuprofen being available above paracetamol.

Cough and cold medicines prices have risen 10% over the last week, according to the ONS who also report that the overall cost of living has risen by 1.1% during the same period; a little more than the ANNUAL inflation target of 2%pa!

I remember when the talk at BBQs and other social gatherings [remember those?] was about how much more the house was worth this month compared to last month; now it's whether we've been successful in securing an online shopping slot ans wondering whether the order will contain self raising flour ... undecided

Oh the times they are a changing ...

TDA was not infering  that it is restricted because of covid virus,   but how the restriction that was implemented some years ago does not work  , as it is available at multiple outlets ,if so minded,  ,which negates any restriction

I understand that was the reason the restriction was put in place but it is a decision that is a bit flawed and probably not very well thought through. Paracetamol is widely available in greater quantities be it from your local chemist or online. For example I have just received an order for 100 tablets from an online pharmacy. The problem with the restriction in supermarkets is that it only allows four days supply at maximum dose so if you have a bad cold or flue, in normal circumstances, you have to get more in when you are not well and probably contagious. We always keep a large stock at home because I have to take it most days. When I discuss pain killers with my doctor he assures me that Paracetamol is one of the safest to take and even suitable from pregnant women. It always worries me when he says that almost as though he thinks I we get pregnant, a 73 year old man - that would be something of a miracle!!!!!!

AD. I don't think TDA meant it was a crazy restriction in that sense, she meant it was open to misuse so wasn't a fail safe sales restriction.

But others have said that I think? smile

I'm just about to go out  for my daily constitution, OH has received the fence posts he was waiting for and the bags of concrete so the new fencing (trellis) is in full swing. We share the fence between a neighbour and their cottage garden. These are neighbours who mysteriously don't own any of their boundaries, so all of us adjoining neighbours have to fork out...but that leaves the choice of boundary to us, so it's trellis this time round, handy for our roses. wink

Moderator Comment - We discourage the discussion of members that have left the forum for several reasons. However well intentioned we should not be discussing people who are not here to reply. It should also remembered that not everyone that leaves this forum does so of their own accord.

Any drug, taken to excess, is dangerous. At least with paracetamol there is a 'discouragement' or 'deterring' control measure applied.

But, if anyone is determined to abuse the controls, there is very little that can be done to stop them.

We have had in the past our neighbours "adviseing" that the boundary  fence (to the right of their property) that was damaged in the 1987 "non storm" storm was ours and the one to the left was theirs (not damaged),we looked on our deeds and it was not very clear,  we had it replaced,  ,but we knew the high brick ornamental wall  to the right of our property was ours  ,,as it so stated on our deeds when we bought the house (thanks to maggie),

When the other fence was damaged they told their neighbours  also that the fence was not theirsundecided

Since then we have found that the fence we replaced was theirs all along,

since the last storms the fence was damaged again, this time (after speaking to their son) they have had a new fence installedwink

Just got back from my latest bike ride, enjoyed whizzing around the park. Quite a nice day here, very sunny, but still a cool breeze. I am getting quite good at dodging pooches on extending leads now😱 Lots of cheerful folks out today, everyone well apart, doing what they should be doing. I have re opened my Strava as well, keeping records again. All helps to fill the day.😁

Welcome back IanH smile how's life and how's your ducks doing do they still visit?

We also have a neighbour (fairly new) who seems to think that boundary fences are not important. He informed us a while ago that he was going to remove it and build a wooden fence." No you are not" he was quickly informed  "its not your's to remove,"  "you can build a fence on your side but not remove the one that's there".

Then the hedge that's between us (which is his) he never cuts it, OH does our side of it and the top, he kindly told him a few years ago "you do now that the hedge is yours not ours" still doesn't cut it though. yell

Thing is we've been here over 30 years, our other next door neighbour has been here since they were built in 1952, so we know who's is who's wink

We're lucky with our neighbours fortunately, "our" fence needed replacing, but the neighbour nextdoor paid half of it. OH and another neighbour fitted them just over a fortnight ago, so the job's a good 'un!

Ownership of boundaries is marked on the property's deeds. My dad always said you should hammer the nails home, when fitting. No sure that's actually true.

My parents property only owns the bottom of the garden fence, straight onto the farmers field behind. When they sold part of the garden 30 years ago it was a condition of sale that the boundary of the house built on the plot would own that boundary which adjoins my parents. Great idea from the solicitor! It meant they had no worries as they grew older. Storm Dennis did for some of that fence and the newish neighbour has rebuilt it very well and was delighted to be able to work from mum's side too without causing a nuisance to anyone.

I remember as a child over the far side of the garden the owners of the property which had been recently built were cutting back the Elm, anyone remember those?, hedge. An interesting discussion followed 😉.

No time for hedges and gardens today - I probably need certifying 😆😲. I've blitzed all the bedrooms, vac-ing ceilings walls and curtains, all movable furniture pulled out, thank goodness most is fitted - phew 😃 vac'd everything to within an inch of it's life OH has dusted no polished every hard surface as I leave.

I feel like I'm reclaiming our home only downstairs to go but that's for another day. Lovely to have had a cleaner, last year I had no physical or emotional energy to tackle the smallest of housework, but no one cleans the way you do. I NEVER in a million years thought I'd think let alone say something like that! OH actually remarked it smells like our home again. 😂😂. So sadly I don't think we'll employ anyone again.

Right must shift and get last of the washing in and back where it belongs before I have a shower and make dinner.

I think where we live some of the old cottage gardens were completely open, in fact three near us have an old row of three privies, one each...the furthest cottage dwellers had a long trot to theirs! Then bits of land were bought and sold, cottages knocked together and then back again so the deeds are a bit fluid but we know our main boundaries it's just the very old ones that cause problems, we don't have right and left hand boundaries, nothing straight forward to go by!  I suppose the boundaries are marked on our deeds in red but they only show the parcel of land not the upkeep of each boundary itself and one of our neighbours gets away with it! wink

We were considering a division of cleaning duties today. But dog walking and bike riding got in the way. So we are too late to start now.😉

i might just summon up the energy to mow the lawn however. On boundaries, some of you might recall, us and a neighbour part stripped out a nasty ivy and hawthorn hedge the end of Autumn. We replanted with a mix of green and copper beech, and so far, so good. Every sapling has taken, including four spares in tubs so we must have done it right. It’s still a bit of a gap, but at some point I am going to try and espalier the side branches, so that they lock together and make a nice hedge. Looking forward to seeing the leaves unfurl, different colours.

Very sunny here almost all day.  Decided to combine exercise with a little shopping by going to Asda for milk and a few things we did not find, or forgot to order at Waitrose, and parking at the furthest point from the store.

Short queue to get in, less than 5 minute wait, but a bit disappointing as vegetable shelves were almost empty other than potatoes, fruit shelves not so bad, and this is a very large store.

Also noticed there was no pasta, but they did have toilet rolls, and cheese!   Not much bread , and the fresh meat shelves were partly empty.

We got milk,  of which there was plenty, coffee whitener, fruit,  rolls for our burgers, leeks to make leek and potato soup now we have so many potatoes, G&T, not a lot of the gin left on the shelves though, and laundry sanitiser for DD, first time OH has spotted it in a shop for many weeks, but no courgettes, which are one of our favourites.

Most people were observing the 2m rule, but not all, so it was like a slalom course at times.

Packed a box of goodies for the grandtwins and posted this afternoon.  Lots of craft stuff and some yummies 🍭🍬🍫

Windy but dry day here so had a wander by the river.  Mrs One went into Morrison’s, no queue to get in or to pay.  Best time to go is later in the afternoon.  We had a second Morrison’s store open today, this was the old Coop but has a petrol station ⛽️ where are existing store doesn’t.  Won’t have to drive 20 miles for the 0.10p/ltr off offers

I went to Aldi at around 12, as we were getting very low on stuff like milk, bread, fruit and veg.  About 10 in front outside in the queue.  Once inside, plenty of fruit and veg, so got various items, but no broccoli, which was one of the things I wanted.  Got green beans instead.  They even had pasta!  Plenty of milk, which is also what I wanted.  Also plenty of bread, chicken, fish and meat.

The only thing i didn't like is that invariably you get quite close to people, some do their best to keep out of the way, but others don't.  Of course the aisles aren't as wide as in the bigger supermarkets, so next time I might try Tesco, which is the nearest to us of the bigger ones.

We always try to be in the shops before 9am, starting with Aldi as its the first shop we pass once out of the village.

We have found that the smaller the supermarket the less empty shelves they have. So always worth checking the likes of Spar, Nisa, Co-op

Iceland is worth looking at if you have one of the big ones or Farm foods, they both sell fresh food as well as frozen.

Kj, did you not check Lidl, they always seem to have veg.

The wee village shop kept their promise and we got SR flour for my elderly neighbour this afternoon. The shop owner managed to get one of those huge bags that the bakeries have, he and his team weighed it out and put into bags, just like the old days smile

Managed to get a Waitrose delivery before Easter which will be helpful, (the other order is a bit further ahead and we have to collect it.) They appear to have released a few dates for next week!

Will have to check with our elderly neighbours tomorrow, hoping their family have now done a long distance local order for them.

Our Aldi is new, only opened a month before Christmas, and we noticed it had nice wide aisles compared to some of the older ones we have been in.

Our Lidl, by comparison, is old and cramped, they are looking for a bigger place, but if they find one then we know we will lose this one, which would not be so good as it is only a 5 minute walk away.

Out Tesco is also old and cramped, and their application to build a bigger store on the same site was refused due to local objections.......too many NIMBYS here!

Asda is newish, so spacious, and Waitrose is very nice.

Sainsburys is further away, but also spacious, as is Morrison's.

We also have 3 M&S Simply Food within 4 miles, so we are very well served.

Not been to Lidl for a couple of weeks, but will try them soon as they are very  close, and there is a Farmfoods there too.

We may  have to make more effort to get up earlier before the shops are raided!

Luckily we did a shop at Farmfoods 2 weeks ago and stocked up on some frozen veg, so we can use that when necessary, but we do prefer fresh.
