Good to hear you are safely home WN, hope TG is well on her way today as well, and anyone else heading back to the bunker!

There are going to be some superbly cared for gardens, and interesting DIY projects this year. All good fun to stave off the stay at home blues!😁

A bit of a milestone today. Around 6 years ago, we had to move, which meant having to extend the mortgage. Not a large mortgage, but today it was paid off. Several house moves, bringing up a family etc has meant we’ve had a mortgage for a long time. Finally free of it, wahoo!

At this time it would have been nice to go out and celebrate. Ah well..

When we retired we decided to us some of our lump sum to pay off the mortgage. We went into Halifax each with a cheque in hand. Whilst it was nice to be mortgage free the actual paying it off was a bit of an anti climax!!! Perhaps I thought the would serve us with Champagne at the very leastsmile

Had an easy run home from Buxton today.

Caravan unpacked. We're in no rush to clean it etc. Will be done over the next few days. Have to venture out tomorrow but will be taking all precautions necessary.

Likewise for us. OH managed to get 3 loads of washing done and first two lots dried outside. Glad you made it home without any trouble, WM. The diversion and recommended route worked out perfectly.....Thanks! A quick visit to town tomorrow for a few things, including OH's haircut and then we'll batten down the hatches.

Glad to hear that you and your mum are managing to get out and have lots of projects to keep you busy. Guess we'll have to do some gardening too, but only after I've cleaned the van so that it's ready for the next trip, whenever that may be.

Hope that TG has managed to get a flight home and is back in their house.

Well done Freddy. You can feel the weight falling off you.

We were fortunate in that I was able to use some hefty bonuses in my early 40's to pay off the mortgage. I'm glad we made the decision to do that rather than go on grandoise holidays or move to a bigger house etc. One of our better decisions.

Hopefully Nellie the van won't need cleaning again before the next trip.

When my latest OH and I were first together, she was a tenant with the local council, and had been for years,so we looked at buying the house (thanks maggy)but was "expensive" at that time,  then came the crash ,which just happened to be at the same time ,i was offered a good early retirement package,,so with part of my lump sum,we paid for our house with a chequewink, the rest is a far higher return on our investment than we could ever dream of from any where elsecool

Funny you should say that. When I paid it off (over the phone) I said “Aren’t you going to congratulate me?” I got a half-hearted reply. I guess it happens all the time for them, but it was a big deal for us, symbolically.

Well done Freddy. You can feel the weight falling off you.

It’s certainly been a long ol’ slog, most of it with relatively high interest rates, remember 17%? Now my savings attract very low rates☹️

In other news, I’m considering digging up a border and sticking in some raised beds (for veg), since I’ve got time on my hands. But in the back of my mind is the thought that I might not get much use out of them in future years due to (hopefully) travel. Something to ponder on.

Little share for anyone interested......Wright’s Bread Mixes available on website called Fruugo. Decent price, minimum order of 5, free delivery. We have used them for years in our bread maker, always turned out a decent loaf, either in maker or by hand. Can be stored for months, easy to add things like herbs, spices etc.....

Well, it won't get it whether it needs it or not!! I don't mind cleaning it after every trip but certainly not twice. However I might just give it a polish should we get some nice warm sunny weather and I can strip off to the waist and get a bit of sunshine on my back while doing it.wink

The border I have in mind (only small) is looking a bit tired now anyway. If I went ahead, I’d want to be able to grow enough for it to be worthwhile, hence raised beds. Where we used to live, we had a 200ft garden, and was able to grow as much as I liked. I do miss that.

They are often to be found in Aldi. We took our breadmaker away with us one year. We used to bake each evening, folks would come round sniffing as we had it on a table in awning. OH decided it would be a good idea to set timer and let it bake in morning one time........works great with separate ingredients where water doesn’t react instantly with yeast. But not with mixes......I told him, but he wouldn’t listen. Took him all morning to clean the gloop out😂

Back home safe and sound smile

Everything went well, we had been warned that the airport was manic, so we left a bit earlier than usual. It was the easiest and fastest we have ever been processed at that airport laughing

When checking in they had a barrier that you had to stay behind, then we pasted through security very quickly. Once through it was busy but no different to any other year except the staff were wearing masks and gloves.

Lanzarote will closed down on Tuesday. Lots of flights have been cancelled, folk told refund has gone back on your card you will need to rebook a flight. Flights not available and those that are, are going up £50 while you are booking them.  One elderly couple lost their flights with EasyJet, managed to get new flights with  Ryanair, only to loose them a short while later. Lots of profiterring going on £1500 was quoted for 1 couple for new flights, disgusting practice.

OH remembered there was a Nisa store near where our car was parked,  popped in on the off chance they might have milk, no problem at all no shortages of anything. Loads of lo rolls, though limited to 1 pack, same with a few other things but I managed to most of what I needed so don't have to get up at 6am now smile

Glad to hear you are safely back TG. I realise how very lucky we were that we came home last Friday. Glad you managed to get some supplies.

Has anyone used Parkers Plants online? Irish DIL recommended them so I placed an order with them on Wednesday but having read your comment brue I think I might have a while to wait!

I think it's worth a try Millie! I used Sutton's, much depends on how much they grow themselves or if they import as well. I've just had a lovely tree delivered from NI. But apparently it's seeds and tray plants that are in demand.

Really pleased you made it home TG and found supplies!

I’ve used both Parker’s and Sutton’s in the past. I did the plug plants thing one year, bit of a disaster, but not down to Parker’s or Sutton’s. When they arrived all I got was mush in a plastic container, somewhere along the delivery I think they had been used as a football. Both companies sent out replacements, but the survival rate wasn’t that good. Seeds are better.

Our local nursery is doing home delivery, free of charge as well. You have to know what you want of course, but you call with list, pay by card, then they will drop at door. No human contact required. It could well be worth ringing your local place for plants etc... first. We are trying to support our local small businesses if we can. I was in nursery last week, full to bursting with stock, it’s been growing gradually from a tiny little idea around 5 years ago, and the quality is superb. I bought some seeds as presents for Christmas, so we have a variety of stuff to plant, I do the floral stuff, Mum and Sis major on the veg!

Daughter's musician partner (music activities curtailed) is working at a local organic growers, everything going  at full capacity.

Talking of bread making there is a good recipe out there for an easy bread made in a heavy duty casserole, I don't think you even have to knead it. Looks like a French Boule type bread.

OH is clearing up after the apple pruners this morning, they took what they wanted and left us with a lot of twigs! Good for kindling at some point.

Blackbirds are busy with nesting material...moss on our lawn is decreasing. They are so clever at building hideaway nests. Bluetits nesting in apple tree nest box not off by pruning activities either.

Bird watching in garden is one of our delights at the moment brue😁 Lots going on at the moment, including the return of “pretty birdy” our resident Blackbird. He’s up at around 4am now, yelling his signature call to all the ladies around. Mainly from the top of our bay window, outside our bedroom😂

wink Hi Bakers & ALL, Not a problem for me to now stay here on I.o.W.The "Waverley" site is open all year. The local "Waitrose" is pretty well stocked up ,except for the 'paper' issues of course but i expect that will change later as the trucks come over .Local farm shops/butchers/bakers , are good, some pubs are closing either due to lack of foot-fall,or supply problems.I 've stocked up on ready meals from "Waitrose & "Lidl",also brought some home made stuff with me ,don't think I'll starve just yet !! If i have to be anywhere ,i think I'll be happy here .cool.

Water pump packed up while away last week. Got a replacement from Force 4 chandlery in Busledon but turned out was wrong connection size despite me quoting the serial number. Now got one on order online. Will fit it next week and refill the water tank. Have topped up the gas bottle and have 450 miles worth of diesel so I will be all set to run for the hills. I’ve packed my camouflage jacket. Wondering whether to paint the van green and get some camouflage netting ready for full survivalist mode. Must go online and look up how to prepare rabbits before the net crashes. Might have to regrow my beard when the razor blades run out.

I see one of the ragtop headlines quotes Boris “We can turn the tide in 12 weeks..” He might be a classics buff but obviously a bit sparse on Anglo-Saxon history down here in the Solent area.

I lived in Warsash in the second half of the 1980s and worked in Bitterne & Eastleigh. I have some very happy memories of Easter Hockey Tournaments at Trojans Hockey Club!

Now living 500 miles road journey further north, but still no toilet rolls to be had. Might have to take to wearing a kilt ... sealed
