We'll certainly be using up any unsent cards this year when next year comes around. I'm sure some people end up with the same card but everybody has the decency not to mention it if they do. We even sent the very same card to Mrs WNs mother in consecutive years!surprised Yes, she did notice and fortunately laughed about it. It was lucky that she liked it. This year we made sure that we didn't buy the same one.

I send a letter, hand written, to a couple of distant relatives and a few friends, all of the letters being individual as I ask about their lives as well as telling them ( or boring them) about ours.

Blooming cold out there today. Freezing fog and icy paths so I took MiLs prescription down to her doctors and visited our library as they had a book I'd ordered. It's local market day so the place was busy. MiLs funny. She always asks if the stall holders were working when the weather is poor. I keep telling her that they don't just work the 2 days that they operate at our town but other local ones as well and that if they stayed in every time the weather was poor they'd starve but she keeps asking the question anyway, like today.smile

We don't tend to send Christmas cards (shock horror) but we have got a few over the last few days from the neighbours. We do however always send a selection box in to the little girl next door and the two kids who live across the road.

Cold and damp here today so not doing too much. The builders next door have said they should be done by Saturday so we are hoping to be able to move the caravan back over to its space on the drive. It will be nice to be able to see the full front of the house again as that has been 4 weeks since we came back from the Lakes and the van has been sitting in front of the front door since.

At work the men (generally) never sent out Christmas cards to fellow colleagues, I certainly didn't but always gave a bottle of wine to those working in my department then later to those heads of department I was responsible for. I always got one from my boss too.

I remember when someone first thought up the idea of not giving Christmas cards at school and instead making a donation to a charity of their choice, this worked well till people starting sending round all staff emails saying along with Christmas greetings and to who they were donating to. Most were Christmas type charities but some had things like wildlife donations which interestingly caused tension. Some wag then said he was giving his donation to the Conservative party which caused even more!

Also there was one teacher who would never give out any cards till the last day of term. She claimed it was because that was closer to the real spirit of Christmas  but most of us thought it was so that she only sent cards to those that had sent one to her and so saved money!

If we'd got into the habit of giving cards to workmates when I was still pre-retired they would have had some great vacant spaces in their display I can assure you laughing !!  However the habit has taken hold strongly in retirement I'm working on the assumption that if I don't receive a card from X or Y two years in a row the Missing Ones  don't have access to card and ink wherever they have landed wink!! I still insist on putting the cards received  on display since they cover, for a short while, A B M's Lack of dusting power embarassed.

Back to serious stuff now --  I shopped this morning but it took me ages  !! Not due to crowds or traffic but after yesterdays er  er  shall we say strictures suggested by Diabetes Nurse, I spent about 60% of my car park time reading the back covers of the goods for "advice" as to contents, storage  etc  etc  etc.  Got it all home & stacked in correct places i.e. Freezer / fridges / cupboards / tummy  NO NO NO please delete that last one it's just wishful thinking frown

Anyway all done & dusted so the pre Holiday wash is commenced when it will finish I don't know but after today there is just one day of deliveries to undertake then it's Hibernation for Brian  smile

    I do so hope that you lot out there are at least as well advanced in your preparations for the rest of this year 'cos I've even bunged in my prescription 10 days early  { the surgery suggested that on my mobile while I was studying the mince pies in M & S  Do you think they might have an app that allows them to follow us around  surprised??    }

    Worried  of Crewe

Brian, you have an efficient medical centre, round here it's DIY, especially with prescriptions which take over a week to sort and "unless we write a note why we are sending an early request it may be rejected...

Don't even know about their Christmas hols, there's nothing on the web site, we just have to guess…  wink

Had a lovely day here in the Lot upto 18.3C and we even managed to have our lunch outside not normal at this time of year but lovely all the same, catching with the washing since coming back home more to do tomorrow and another warm day but more of a windy day, got the caravan to clean out tomorrow but have done the fridge already then that will be it until next April as DIY after the New Year.   OH got 6 months renewals for his prescriptions from the doctor's which he saw before we came over to the UK and he just take the prescription to the Pharmacy each month and all gets stamped once he has his medication all very prompt

Our day started well. Christmas cards all written and sent. πŸ˜‡. Rang Powrtouch as we’re having problems with the motor mover. They suggested we box the remote and electronic bit and post it to them. No problem. Called back to the dentist in town as OH had a tooth out last week and she prescribed some antibiotics. We drove out to the pharmacy (eight miles) only to find that they haven’t included his name on the prescription and the pharmacy won’t accept it. 😑 suggested we call the dentist whilst in the pharmacy for them to talk to each other but ...no. Time for a gin and tonic and start again tomorrow. 😐

I got the micro quiz regarding two boxes of cold relief sachets this morning, one lemon, one blackcurrant. Had I taken them before, were they all for me, did I know not to take other paracetamol with them. I gave a polite, yes, no, yes, but part of me was itching to say something else. 😈

Using up last years cards is all very well but why is it that they never seem to have a matching size envelope? You always seem to end up with odd cards but no envelopes. Bit like odd socks.

Very stormy weather. Low voltage tonight, this doesn't bode well for Christmas cooking. What surprised us, because the phone was still working, was British Gas getting in touch to ask if we were ok as they knew our boiler wasn't working. So at least we knew that part of the system works. smile

Its rare that I buy cards but if I buy Christmas ones its always in the sale just before Christmas.

I've been making cards for years, used to sell them at work and in the local post office. Stopped making  them for the PO a couple of years ago but there are those in the village that say they miss my cards, as I never made 2 the same, so they felt when they received one it was 'special'. OH writes his own Christmas cards,  while I tend to do family.

Very cold night last night and the frost has not lifted all day, but hey it wasn't raining so not complaining. Spent 30 mins in the garden seeing to the bird feeders, breaking ice on there water baths and popping a few pots into the green house for protection. I think winter is just around the corner wink

After lunch OH helped me get the knitting machine down from the attic and set it up in the spare bedroom. Once set up I 'encouraged' him to go out laughing  lovely, nice and peaceful for me to get re acquainted with it. Had to get the books out and read up on how to cast on, embarassed its been a long time since I last used it. Didn't take long to get back into the swing of things. Just have to work out how I get rid of the OH again innocent laughing

Eldest son has 'taught' himself how to knit, he only started a couple of weeks ago and is doing really well. So far he has knitted 6 hats, all different, one for himself in his 'Corp' colours and the others are all random colours, he's even done one with cables in it, after watching me doing an arran cardigan. He can't read a pattern yet, says its like a foreign language, will have to explain how to next time he's up.laughing

The practice in the village is very good when ordering a repeat prescription, we can order it online or by popping in the tear off bit in a box in the reception. Prescription then collected 2 days later at chemist in the village. TDA getting the third degree at the pharmacy is a bit of a pain at times, I know they have to do it but it doesn't mean I like being questioned over every little thing I buy.

No problem, CS. I've not felt unwell just little sore in places. We will do our best to enjoy the holiday period at home, for a change. At least we'll get to read the cards we receive before Xmas instead of some time in the middle of January, as is usual.

We woke to a very frosty morning, with the ground all white, and although the sun did come out for a short while it was soon obscured by a freezing fog. It started to warm up when we were out for our morning walk and most of the frost had gone by lunchtime. We walked down to Asda for some things to take back home tomorrow, then packed up what I could and now it's raining. Thanks must go to the site warden for his help this afternoon.

This is a round up of our year …...

3 stays in hospital for son, three weeks in hospital for my wife, the doctors said not to travel too far in the summer so no outing to yorkshire as planned. Holidayed nearer to home the van meant that she didn't have to negotiate the flight of stairs to the necessarium (bed and loo) just 3 steps into the van.

We have now had a stairlift installed so the pair of them are driving up the stairs safely.

We have had a few outings in the van all within 100 miles of home.

This is the reason why I haven't been posting as frequently as before.

So hope you all have a wonderful time at Christmas.

My friend and I really enjoyed the lunchtime Christmas Carol Service today. Lovely to sing some carols and the Cathedral choir were wonderful. It was packed as usual. I felt a bit guilty that I didn't help with the mulled wine and mince pies afterwards but have said I will help prepare some of the 500 (!) oranges for the Christingle service on Friday instead. Friend and I then had a nice catch up over lunch at Cote Brasserie afterwards. Afterwards I nipped down to Specsavers to make an appointment in the New Year as I am finding reading difficult - no funny comments about my reading ability please  😁

TG, I hope your BIL is now feeling better. Chemo can be so difficult.

I am still trying to get OH to sort out his packing for N. Ireland 😫

Another day of wind and rain, Christmas lights taking quite a battering outside, a neighbour trying to repair his today. We have a distant view of lights on a hillside house, I presume they can see ours, it's quite nice to see them in this gloomy weather.

Hope you enjoy the London show B2.

Have made progress today and got three Christmas cakes iced etc. Not up to going out yet out so everything will be last minute.

Have a good evening everyone.   πŸŽ‡πŸŽ‡πŸŽ‡

So am I, really proud of him. He's a funny one, motor engineer by trade, soldier by profession, skiing instructor and a damn good skier for pleasure. When he was at school one of his teachers said Einstein, he will never be but if he has the 'want' to do something, nothing will stop him. How right he was, sadly that teacher is not around now to see just how much he has achieved. Forgot one of his greatest achievements father of 2 very lovely and wonderful young people. smile

Shopping day today, forecast was for a fine day, they got it wrong again it rained all morning yell afternoon was better so OH washed one of the cars. After a bit of housework I sat and 'played' again with my knitting machine smile decided to see if I could remember enough to knit a jumper, well I've done the back of it and only had to take it down by 3 rows once.  Still I'm pleased with what I've done I will do another piece tomorrow, once I get into the swing of it again I can usually do a whole jumper (child's) in an afternoon.

Just having a break from hand knitting the button/buttonhole bands for my Arran cardigan at the moment. I sat and sewed it up while watching the tv earlier, so should get it finished tomorrow now.

Not a lot else going on here, shops were not busy when we went, neither was town. I think everyone must be doing online shopping.

My brother was a welder by trade. Big and beefy to boot but by the time he was 18 he could knit, sew and darn. He continued to knit quite regularly into his twenties but his occupation took a toll on his fingers. With having a sick and ailing mother from very young we all were taught the rudimentaries of sewing, ironing, cooking etc. and it has stood us all in good stead.

MiL asked, very politely and at the right time, if I would mind taking her to M&S in Cheshire Oaks this morning so how could I refuse, so off we three trooped. I decided to get some vittel shopping in at Sainsburys whilst they lingered in the lingerie. They did state that whoever was in charge of new dresses orders at M&S should be sacked forthwith as they seem to have abandoned their main custom base. I have no comment to make.

Chucked it down here this afternoon.

Good to hear from Robsail again. Just a shame that his year hasn't been the best. Here's hoping that 2020 brings an improvement in fortune for him and his family.

Fine dry start to the day, so managed a couple of walkout with Flyte while waiting for daughter and SIL to arrive. Hitched up and away by 2:00 and home in pouring rain just after 5:00. Van away and partially emptied, to be completed tomorrow, in the dry hopefully. Will have to look out our tree and decorations tomorrow.
