What are you all up to

I think that most of us are with you there WN.
I have been fortunate thus far with a few chancers. Last house I moved 30 years ago) I caught somebody going into my shed. Young lad in his twenties. I manhandled him off the property threw him into the street and gave him a few swift kicks to the ribs. I did tell him that he was fortunate to pick my home and not my neighbour's as he would not have been anywhere near as gentle.
Same house and I was in the kitchen cooking evening meal when some chap tried the door, I saw the handle turn and immediately went to snatch it open. It was locked and no key. All I could do was shout 'Sue, where's the damned door key'. I think he heard that as he ran down the garden and climbed into the school playing fields.
Just one incident at present home nearly 30 years ago a couple of years after moving in. It was winter, Living room curtains wide open and all the front of the house in darkness. Wife and kids were in the rear sitting room and I was cooking in the adjacent kitchen. I walked into the sitting room to pour a drink and through a chink between the serving hatch doors to the living room I saw a movement in front of the house. I nipped into our bedroom and then out of the back door just in time to confront a young falla coming around the front corner of the house as I stepped around the back and so we were about 30 feet apart. He stopped and stuttered a bit as I asked if I could help him. He said that he was looking for - and gave a first name. I told him that it was very strange that all the adjacent houses had gates open (they always did) with lights on in the front and yet he chose to climb into my front garden over a dividing wall from a neighbouring house to enquire at my home which had a locked 5 bar gate and no lights showing at the front. I was stood under an outside light on the rear corner of the bungalow and when I pulled my hidden arm from behind my back and drew a 2 foot bayonet out of its sheath he was off. He cleared the front gate without touching it, sprawled onto the pavement and was then off and running.
I put the bayonet back beside my bed and went back to cooking.
About 10 or 12 years ago there were three caravans broken into within 100 yards of me including a next door neighbours. He lost a full Isabella awning, some bottles of scotch and a TV. By the time they had come to his maybe their car was full or unlike the others my caravan was towards the rear of the home, bathed in light from the kitchen lights that are on 24/7 and front gate locked with 'Beware of the Dog' sign.
I am, sadly, no longer physically able to deal with such trash.

OH is in charge of tea making this morning as we have several apple pickers in gathering the last of the cider apples. One of the trees, called Stoke Red has had an unusually good year and the tiny little red apples are really juicy.
Just starting to rain.
Apparently it has rained, at some point, every day through October in the SW

Thanks brue, OH is fine actually, he only went for a check up, not sure if its over enthusiastic/cautious Dr.
He did however get a call this morning to say they had a cancellation with the nurse, would he like to come and get his bloods done NOW. Great when you live so close to be able to take advantage like that. So at least his bloods should be back tomorrow or Monday.

The same here every day since we've been back at some point, some days its not stopped at all. Dry at the moment though so shall not complain

Hope all goes well for your OH Tammygirl and a shame about your Spanish trip.
OH had his blood test last Tuesday and had the results by 3pm same day and you just go to the nurses room on 2 days a week from 8am to 10am you can book but he just walks in as he has a prescription from the Doctors to take with him and he has been to see the doctor this morning all ok now on a low dose of statins and another blood test when we come back from UK in December, he is type 2 diabetic also he has to go and have a joint check again when we are back here.
Also raining here after a lovely dry sunny day yesterday and quite warm but now much cooler.

Compared to some people’s problems, I suppose mine is trivial but I’m still annoyed - angry, even.
In a nutshell, our caravan was shot at last night! We were both asleep when, about midnight, we were both woken by an almighty bang on the side of the van. Sounded like someone had slammed one of the overhead lockers shut.
Got up and checked the van inside but nothing obvious but when I checked the outside in daylight, I found a dent in the the side panel just below the window next to which Ros was sleeping.
Having got a fair amount of firearms experience, I am 99% certain it was caused by an air rifle pellet. Plus the dead rabbit on the opposite side of the site, tends to add weight to that theory!
We are only staying here to get the caravan serviced ( completed on Monday) but thought we would make a bit of a break of it given the distance we’ve travelled.
Not a happy bunny but I suppose a bit better off than the one across the way😠
(Tried to add a photo but not sure how to re-size on my iPhone)

David - it’s Pennine View at Kirkby Stephen. We have used it before and it’s a nice, small commercial site. It’s about 10 miles away from the dealer ALV at Tebay and they always hold their annual rally here.

They were sympathetic but won’t be sending anyone since there is nothing they could usefully have done when I reported it first thing this morning. I have to agree with that assessment. I have a crime and log number for future reference. In my day, I would have had local units pay ‘passing attention ‘ but those days are long gone.

You almost got that right, Richard -- The correct term to my way of thinking should have been "pathetic " The least they should have done was make an obvious appearance first thing and then again round about the Midnight Hour. If somebody were to lose an eye in a similar event next week, say, will they claim "Well they didn't seem too bothered last week"
But I sincerely hope Ros gets her share of sound, undisturbed sleep tonight !

ABM - thanks for your kind wishes re Ros. Yes, I agree with you but it is now almost 25 years since I retired from the Force and, reluctantly, I have to accept that times have changed. If I had come across such a lack of response, it would probably have resulted in disciplinary action - especially considering that at its very least it’s criminal damage which is going to cost a great deal to repair.
But when I talk to neighbours who are still serving, this pales into insignificance as compared with some of the things that are accepted by the present Police ‘management ‘(and they disagree as much as you or I would).

Just hang on to your / our English Heritage, Richard -- I saw some load of cobblers from Scotland last week about legalising casual use of recreational drugs. Ten years time it will be all drugs,. Another few years after that and they'll demand we have our daily snort before breakfast !!

Don’t get me started ABM. Part of me would love to go back and rattle a few cages - but the sad reality is that I wouldn’t last five minutes!

It must have been a very unpleasant experience. Would it not seem the case that it was someone was out shooting rabbits rather than someone targeting your caravan and your caravan just not in the way of a wayward shot? That doesn't excuse the upset and the damage but does make it slightly different from deliberate damage which would be even more worrying. Do you think the perpetrator was actually onsite or did the shot come from outside the site?

Someone was shooting rabbits because I found a dead one, as I said. Given where the van is in relation to the surrounding countryside, the only place outside the site from which they could have shot is over 300 yds away - so unless it was a S.1 Firearm , that’s unlikely. Like most sites although vehicles need a pass to get through the barrier, there’s nothing to stop pedestrians. So - it could have been anyone. As for ‘accident ‘ - if it was, he/she was a b. awful shot since the impact is 3 feet above the ground and even the rabbits here ain’t that big.

I wouldn’t like to think it was done deliberately either DK but at best it was done by an irresponsible thoughtless person. This time it was property that was hit, the next time, who knows.
I hope you both have a trouble free night tonight Richard.

Thanks NAS - however ‘deliberate’ isn’t the issue- as long as someone is reckless as to whether damage is caused or not- that’s sufficient for criminal damage and I would say that discharging any sort of firearm within or onto a caravan site was reckless. Never mind the question of armed trespass if they were actually on the site.

OH once had to speak to a group of teenagers with an air rifle, they were taking random shots at wildlife in woods behind our van on a Lake District site. A rabbit and a female mallard died on our pitch. They were mortified when they realised what had happened (and could happen) and the episode came to an abrupt end.

JVB - I also considered this possibility - however, the site roads are all smooth tarmac and the damage is towards the back of the van, behind the awning, so there’s no way that could have been the cause. Plus, if I could find a way of re-sizing photos on my iPhone and publish a photo of the damage, you would see the perfectly round indentation consistent with an air rifle pellet.

Very disturbing RandR. Hope it's an isolated incident. Still going to cost you money, if only your insurance excess
I was once shot by an air rifle. A "friend" and I were teenagers and he had an air rifle. We were firing against a bulls eye target on a tree in a wood. I went to change the target and somehow got hit by a pellet. The "friend" thought the gun was empty, or so he told me! End of interest in air rifles and so called friend. Fortunately injury wasn't major.

Spent a lovely morning walking alongside the River Deben from Melton to Woodbridge. The tide had only just started to trickle in and therefore there were plenty of waders and other birds to keep us interested on our walk to town. Plenty of other action in the boatyards we passed and lovely views in plenty of sunshine.
Left Mrs WN to do a drawing of the Tide Mill whilst I popped into town and idled away an hour. Then a stroll back by which time the tide was well up.
Called in at a few food stores at Mettlesham and the heavens opened. Good timing.
CL site has 4 on it so still plenty of people enjoying our pastime.
