What are you all up to

TammyG, this year I decided to have the flu jab but had to postpone it till I'm rid of my sinus problem. Our pharmacy is offering all the flu jabs, no appointments. I looked on line at Boots where they are offer the same in England and Wales but not Scotland, but they are offering a private jab for £12.99 uk wide in some places and it's bookable. Worth a try if you're going to miss out?
PS there have already been shortages in the SW

Different rules up here it would appear.
I did say that in England pharmacies do flu jabs for all ages, got told "NO they don't"
So far I have spoken to the head pharmacist at Asda, he was the one who said my fault for going on holiday. When challenged he said not everyone goes away for that length of time, I asked had he not heard of the 'Snowbirds' that thousands of people go away for longer up to 6 months some of them.
Also the pharmacy in the village (Davidsons) who work closely with our surgery (they don't have any vaccine until the end of the month and not sure what they are going to get.
Brue, thanks I will look at what Boots are doing up here.
OH going to Dr's tomorrow for a check up, his appointment is with head of practice. Feel sure he will mention it

Prices certainly do differ, at Asda its £7, £10 at a private travel clinic, £12 at our local pharmacy
but as none of them are 'allowed' to give us the under 65 vaccine (we are over 65) which they hold, it doesn't mean a lot.0 -
I had a text from my doctors on 10 Sep to say I could make an appointment for the flu jab
Took brother back to the CL he’s staying at. Called round to the van to check all ok for our trip to Hertfordshire starting Friday. Had a walk by the river to the beach. Lots of activity on the river plus watched our inshore lifeboat being launch

Can anyone enlighten me as to how the flu knows what age you are?
I'm somewhere between 64 and 65 but have been having the flu jab for over 20 years due to my kidney disease. I have been told in the past that due to this I'm treated as an OAP but the surgery refuse point blank to give the over 65 jab this year!
So I can only hope that the flu that attacks over 65yo by-passes me. I wonder what injection they give people who will be 65 before Christmas but are 64 now?Barmy!

Lucky you, the 'letters' (yes letters one to each person) from NHS don't come out here until the beginning of October and the vaccination programme start about the middle of October depending on your practice.
They are always banging on that there are not enough GP's in Scotland and that we shouldn't waste Dr's time and use pharmacies for minor things. Yet they will not allow Pharmacies to give the vaccine to over 65's.
Reading through the Document from The Scottish Government, it states that there are 2 possible vaccines for the over 65's (aTIV) and (QIVc) either one is considered to be OK.
For the 18 - 64 age range there are also 2 types, (QIVc) and (QIVe)
However only 1 type will be issued to the Dr's from each age group.
The (QIVc) one is suitable for both age groups. However this is an egg free one and as such should only be given/ordered for individuals who are contraindicated to egg based vaccines.

For those that want to know - From the NHS Website
Which type of flu vaccine should I have?
There are several types of flu vaccine. You'll be offered the one that's most effective for your age:
Children aged 2 to 17 in an eligible group are offered a live attenuated quadrivalent vaccine (LAIV), given as a nasal spray
adults aged 18 to 64 who are either pregnant, or at increased risk from flu because of a long-term health condition, are offered a quadrivalent injected vaccine – the vaccine offered will have been grown either in eggs or cells (QIVe or QIVc), which are considered to be equally suitable
Adults aged 65 and over will be offered either an adjuvanted trivalent injected vaccine grown in eggs (aTIV) or a cell-grown quadrivalent injected vaccine (QIVc) – both vaccines are considered to be equally suitable.0 -

Yes David, that's what I found on the website too as posted above.

After rain over night this morning was drizzly and damp. Drove into Alnwick to stock up before our move down to Durham tomorrow. Intended to visit the Castle but they don't allow dogs into the grounds and no walks in the car park so decided to give it a miss. Called into see the Saxon Church and 13C Castle at Eldingham before going up to Thrunton Woods where we did one of the way-marked trails in the rain. Sun came out late in the afternoon so a pleasant end to our stay at Low Hedgeley.

Apparently older folks don't do so well with flu vaccines which is why the adjuvant thingy has recently been added to beef up immunity etc. Also we react to the vaccine more often...so after 65 you're in for a treat but can enjoy less side effects for now...

We've just had a good night out listening to David Suchet talk about his life and acting career. As it was at the Westlands complex the talk was interspersed with seven helicopter landings, he did well to keep going with the noise overhead. A very good speaker and some great questions with amusing answers.

Not going there this year David 'cos
1 ) nothing that I really want / need to travel 110 mile round trip for to be honest

2 ) Scared of catching winter illness(es) due to meeting unvaccinated folks and consequent Loss of Herd Immunity ( I really must stop reading all these Saturday Supplements

I didn’t know of the the X Y thing🤷🏻♂️, I had mine done at the Docs on Monday. No ifs or buts, I got a reminder on my phone to attend. It must be a nation thing, each nation sets its own rules. Last year was my first jab & last year was the best flu free year I have ever had, I had 2 24hr sniffles that amounted to nothing. Excellent, well done the NHS👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻

We had our over 65 flu jabs a few weeks ago. We avoided the flu clinic as I went with OH when he went to have his B12 injection as the nurse was quite happy to give us the jabs then and there. I used to work for the NHS so have been having the jab for over 20 years. All NHS staff regardless of age were strongly 'encouraged' to have it. 😁

Sitting here in the van at Pennine View caravan park at Kirby Stephen - watching the rain bouncing off the windows - again!. Feeling quite pleased after the van went in for its first service on Monday and the damp test revealed all the readings were 4% or under. Not bad for this time of year. Plus it had another coat of under seal to the floor - apparently Knaus and Eriba are the only manufacturers to insist on this.

Sympathies R&R, rain has featured heavily this year. Payback no doubt for last year’s stunning Summer. It’s raining here as well, and the dog has that “so what, I’m a Labrador” gleam in his eye. Talk about waterproof! 🙄

Whereas our Cockapoo is a bit of a princess and doesn’t do rain - much prefers to lie on the van floor with the underfloor heating on!🙂

So pleased you have your TC refund AD. Hays Travel have just re-opened our TC shop so OH and I are going to pop along there in the next few days and see what they can offer us.

How were they 'Encouraged' Millie ??
The reason I ask is 'cos when I was first diagnosed with Diabetes in the late 1980's my blood tests were always done at Leighton Hospital, Crewe not at the surgery. I used to turn up at this time of year to see large posters / notices extolling the great advantages of NHS staff having the jab. The important part of the screed stated that staff taking advantage of This Free Health Care, courtesy of the NHS & the Taxpayers, qualified for a FREE LOLLIPOP !!
Never offered me one though

I think one of the issues with our Practice at the moment, is that they are a nurse down, one retired a while back and they don't seem to be able to fill the post.
According to 'inside' info they are bringing in 'bank' nurses for the jab clinics.
The Dr told me at my last visit that due to a number factors (nurse retiring) some of the other clinics they had run, they will now have to drop.
This means that those who attended them, will now have to attend at the hospital. Not too bad if its the PRI (Perth Royal Infirmary) but if its Ninewells in Dundee that's not good.
England do seem to have a better approach to getting the flu jabs done. Maybe we should be having a word with the 'Ginger' one

Its raining again, what a surprise. OH is off to do his bit at the Lunch club shortly.

You can always stir up M E P's AND M P's as well as 'Ginger Direct'

Medical Issues apart, I'm sitting on here waiting for the final two loads of tumble drier fodder to go through the system, then it'll be a light lunch followed a visit to ASDA or some other supermarket via a local garden centre ( Well they do have certain brand of wax covered cheese available at not too exorbitant prices
)P.S / EDIT The sun has got his hat on whoopeeee
