Went on the system yesterday to book a site. Started with price of £23 a night, started filling in details and it jumped to £28, after finished all details had jumped to £34.

    What a mess.

I have not noticed any increases when making any of my bookings. Other than increases above the base price because I have added an additional adult, granddaughter, changed the pitch pitch type, or moved the dates slightly into a higher price bracket. All of which are expected.

Just had a look for availability in January link, no Minehead on there, checked separately and Minehead has lots of availability in January,  what a dogs dinner this and especially the app is compared to the old app, any wonder there was only half a dozen outfits at willingcott during the October half term,  amateurish.

Booking page popped up on the website, I typed Minehead in the empty box. It invited me to check availability, and offered me dates and prices throughout the month. It doesn’t seem difficult  to me.

I think Cody is refering to the January late availablity list. Minehead is not shown on that but if you search for Minehead and check availability throughout January there is plenty of availability.

I took Cody to mean the same as you PD.  The list also does not include Clumber and Poolsbrook, both of which have availability throughout January. It does make one wonder who or what is compiling the list. Either way, human or software, it’s not doing a very good job.

There are still negative reviews trickling in via TP daily. Lots of folks will be trying to book for next year, and it might be their first encounter with this new booking system, which might come as a bit of a shock for some in terms of using it compared with the ease of the previous system.

Yes it's not good reading and also hard going for the staff having to reply.

As mentioned previously, trying to enter a date of birth for the second adult on a mobile phone still does not allow the year to be selected. I had to wait until I returned home to use my laptop. This is very basic stuff!

It sounds like the 'testing' (can't really be the right word, can it?) was done in very favourable conditions...good strong signal (probably decent wifi and not a crappy countryside mobile signal) and PC/tablet/phone of popular denomination with recent OS and plenty of local device storage.

put the app on an older device or one a few versions behind the curve (bleeding edge) and throw in a slow signal and we have a poor recipe for success...👎

So you are also having problems and that is it seems with good Internet speeds and equipment that may be older but is up to date with the latest manufacturer updates plus it seems WFH

I've just booked 4 sites for the Autumn. Took me all of 15 minutes.

The biggest problem I had was booking an affiliated site on a separate webpage which took the same time

...but I suspect you knew where you wanted to go and when...probably linking up a tour perhaps?

I think that this (these) type of bookings are certainly doable, it's the searches where folk want the system to suggest possible sites in an area or at a specific period where the hitches begin...

    No not all at.

I've just been looking at finding some site in Norfolk for this October. Click on location not site, start to type in your location (in this case select Norfolk UK after you've typed in a few letters, then enter in your chosen dates and filter for UK club sites if required. Straight forward and easy and done in under a minute I would say?

As you can see from the cropped screenshot it will show you all the sites and even when a site is full. I suppose the only two niggles are typing in UK and full could mean closed as it does in this instance, but once you've done it once one knows they are there.

I'd heard a few negative things about the new booking system over the last few months. Sadly I've been awaiting and recovering from surgery in the last few months since the end of summer so we haven't been out in our van much. Now on the mend I'm looking for new year trips and am saddened to learn that all the comments were true. The new system is terrible. The volume of bitty information on the screen on the booking pages is just awful. The booking system required far too much information and fell over several times requiring me to re enter all the information. This Club's webpage was previously the gold standard for booking where all others failed. I'm shocked at how bad things have become.

On long trips we certainly leave home (or even the previous stop) without necessarily knowing where we are (ultimately) going...it's called touring and exploring...

we don't have carers either, thanks🤷🏻‍♂️

Similarly  for us, but not in the UK, here everything is booked.

..and this is where it all becomes too much like hard work...for us, anyway.

I can't say in advance that I'll want to be at xxx for 4 days then at yyy for 5 days etc...4 days at xxx might not be long enough and 5 days at yyy might be 4 days too long...🤷🏻‍♂️

as changing bookings with CAMC will now cost money if within 21 days (which it will be) it's just another reason not to get involved in trying it...

we tend to use CLs and also THS sites where you can arrive at any time and stay as long as you like without booking. Easy to join these together over a summer as plans can change without issues with deposits and other payments.

We tend to book our first few sites and then once we are away see where we will head, depending on the weather forecast, especially in the winter. We have booked our last two sites this trip that way so far and won't book our follow-on sites until we get to the next one. They will probably be CLs but perhaps a small comm site too, and it is of course much easier to do at this time of the year than later when the hoards finally set out.

Have you tried the Britstops network YT? Obviously more for overnight stops rather than long stays, but we have been enjoying it on the ones we have used on the network. Bit of research required to get things right, but for long journeys, where it’s good to get in a simple stopover to rest, we have found it great. Not all pubs by any means either🙂

Thanks, I am familiar with Britstops and was researching one only last week..

If touring, we would probably want more than one night (depending on area) but as a resource for joining the dots it might be useful.

need to be a member though?...

Our normal way of touring when away for more than 10days. There is nothing worse than realising you have booked to long in an unknown area and have run out of things to see/do.

It's interesting to read the different approaches folk take to touring. We are pretty much the opposite to you, Mikey, in that, when we were touring in the van, and now, when we book cottages or hotels, we know exactly what we want to do in the area and will time our stay accordingly. If we are staying for a week we will have plans for 7 days of walks or visits, may just have to juggle them around depending on the weather. Probably goes back to the days when we were both constricted to school holiday dates and had to make the most of what was available. Even when we go abroad now, it won't be for a simple "package" break, we will have researched and know where we want to go. We recently booked a week in Madeira at the end of February - will hire a car for 3 or 4 days and then use public transport to get around the island. For us, that planning is part of the enjoyment of the holiday.

The only times we don't any longer do that is for our frequent trips to Cornwall which, as the saying goes, is just "living in another place". smile

Pretty much the way we tour and holiday in the UK, and like you when we're in Lakes we leave things till nearer the time and plan low or high level depending on the weather, actually most times it's the night before after looking at the Lakes weather-line.

For abroad it's a mixture of some just-do-nothing holidays (apart from visiting the pool side bar) and visiting an area or city with an idea of what we want to see and do.

Sort of…….🤔 Yes there’s a fee for the book and App, but let’s just say that after that, no one checks you in. We paid for our book last year, and don’t forget you often park up for nothing (which includes some services if the stop has them) you simply reciprocate by purchasing something from wherever you stay. Our last night stop was lovely, a cycling shop and cafe. Nothing to stay, we got rid of a bit a dry rubbish, had a nice walk with the pooch, slept safely and soundly, then had a good look around the cycle shop, bought a few things we needed and had a delicious breakfast in the cafe. The book is a lot less than one night on a Club Site, so it’s well worth it. We voted it our best overnight stop for years, will certainly use again when in Suffolk. We used some in Scotland as well. Sure anyone used to overseas Aires would love to be honest. We used a £25 a night CL one 10 day tour, but using Britstops as well, our average was around £12.50 for the whole tour. We found a truly gorgeous stop one night, but really high tides were expected, so we didn’t want to risk it. Ended up next to a Swimming Pool on the edge of Kircudbright, all services, five minute stroll into town, £10 per night including hook up🤩

I agree that if your time away is determined by holiday entitlement  or flight schedules, then detailed planning will be required. Our recent holiday in Australia required us to plan car hire/accommodation for the two short breaks away from our main base. Day to day planning from our main base wasn't critical as we were there for so long.

However, on our caravan travels in France and Spain, there is no need to plan in detail as sites are very quiet. Deadlines and bookings create stress and we stay as long as we want in an area before moving on. Even the return ferry can be amended.

Following on from my previous comment, one other factor in planning may be the cost of accommodation, - if you are paying £250 a night you obviously don't want to stay too long but if it is only £20 a night it is not as critical.

When we were caravanning abroad we usually had three weeks away in school holidays. We only ever booked the crossings. We knew where we were heading e.g. vender, Jura etc. sometimes the destination would determine which crossing, but living in Gtr Manchester at the time we tended to use one of the Hull crossings. We would have some idea of route and what we wanted to see, but that was it. We toured in France, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg in that way. Never knew how long we wanted to stay anywhere. I well remember one French municipal site, one of the ones where someone would come each evening for the money. Initially we said two or three nights, but eventually stayed about a week. I think we were the only Brit on the site. The monsieur had no English, and us very little French, but he found it very amusing that we stayed so long.
