Not much chance of France this summer

Little chance of a French holiday this summer I'm afraid. The French Government have just announced today ( 2 May) that their state of emergency will continue until 24 July and that anyone entering from another country must undergo 14 days quarentine. If you take a look at La Provence online you can read the original article ( in French) .

That raises the question of anyone arriving via Calais but bound for elsewhere without intending to stop/interact. What then?

Same principle as the USA has always applied even to transit you need a visa, they simply won`t let you in!

There should be the opportunity of transiting elsewhere by taking a sea crossing to Holland as they are opening up soon. The bigger question is what may be facing you on returning to the UK.

I cannot find it now but read somewhere ,that the only movements across borders would be those from the Schengen? group

I found this on the visit Netherlands site, if this helps.

As of March 18 the EU-countries have decided to drastically limit travel to the Schengen area from non-Schengen countries. Travel between Schengen countries is allowed, although some countries have closed borders within the Schengen area. The situation is continuously changing, including measures and rules. Please get in touch with your travel operator or insurance company to assess what the measures mean for your specific situation in case travel planning changes and (part of) your trip is canceled.

Just had the French Prime Minister on tv re deconfinement from Monday 11th May we will be able to go out and travel upto 100km without any paperwork but over 100km you will have to have a reason why you need to go further than a 100km and paperwork to complete and the 1 minister did say that travel from any other EU countries will be from 15th June including the UK so far ok to come to France but there may be changes if the outbreak gets worse again. If anybody wants to read more about it the website The local France covers most of the details or even The Connexion France.

    Hope this helps.

The French and Southern Europeans are frightened of missing out on the tourist € or £. Rest assured French campsites will be open by 1st August with "an increased cleaning regime" . That means the hose pipe round the toilet block twice a day!

We might not be flying but I've booked my crossing and will keep my distance on the ferry. Will need to download the French App though as the NHS one won't work (but may have been scrapped by then!).

we have an 'appointment' with friends in the Var some time in September, i thought it might be touch and go but this looks a bit more encouraging.

obviously, subject to any new regs and how 'safe' we feel another 4 months down the line.

Hope we get a similar travel restriction here to prevent holiday areas being overwhelmed with increased covid cases. The problem is always two or three weeks down the line. It will be interesting to see how this goes.

i think youre right, Brue, the new normal will have to be built up slowly from within areas, gradually releasing (at first) lower risk folk to spend more time outside/exercise, perhaps using more businesses but remaining local.

i dont see flitting from here to Scotland for a jolly happening for a good while yet...

luckily the ferry port is (just about) within 100km from herewink

But you're only going to get 100Km at the moment. That'll take you to about Alencon.

"That'll take you to about Alencon."

    ...better than Aberdeensmile

obviously, things will take time to open up and that 'travel range' (in all countries) will gradually expand, as will the amount of facilities to support those trips.

as we get into the fourth quarter of the year things may have taken on a brighter outlook...

like others, we will put what we allowed to do alongside what we feel confident in doing and take it from there.

one things for sure, it wont be Aberdeenundecided

There are lovely stretches of coast within 100km if I go west from St Malo or east from Roscoff - but at the moment I can't land at either port.

if they open the borders for the UK they wont enforce a 100 km limit on travel. This limit is for people living in France as part of there phased return to normality.

My brother and his wife have never been to mainland France so we arranged a gite holiday with them for June in the Loire (their choice) - now postponed to late August. I'm driving - ferry out and Eurotunnel back (they've done neither) - still hoping it will go ahead but not holding my breath!

We have just cancelled our bookings for two weeks at Saint Clair  and two at  Cavalaire down on the Cote d'azur in JUne. Both sites have sent us emails in reply.  Saint Clair was a no fee/ on trust booking so no refund but they sent us their best wishes and hope to see us next year. Camping de la Baie have cancelled our booking and sent us a 50€ voucher to cover next year's booking fee. Apparently it's the law for Covid cancellations.

"Under these exceptional circumstances, a ministerial order dated 25 March 2020 regulates the conditions for the cancellation of stays due to COVID-19.

It specifies that a voucher (Bon a Valoir) for the full value of any payments made to date will be issued. In this context, please see below the details of your voucher. The voucher is valid for the next eighteen (18) months."

The UK/France seem to have come to an agreement with neither country requiring quarantine for travellers between the two. Macron seems to be quite keen to have us spending in France so provided the R factor remains consistent between us France may be back on later in the summer.

No he didn't he said something along the lines of big lavish international holidays are most likely off the cards, don`t think he was thinking of Brittany in a caravan at say the end of August. However as none of the science or government really seem to understand this virus it could go anyway.

He also said he would be testing 100000 people a day and we are world leaders at testing. I believe he also said people in care homes weren't high risk for catching covid 19. He said the statement from Boris on Sunday was clear to him ?  I could go on sealedsealedsurprised

Irrespective of all this "no holidays" rhetoric , concentrate on what the law and secondary legislation says in both UK and France.

The intention seems to be to allow travel between France and UK without quarantine restrictions. Good.

BUT there are not yet any passenger ferries running, that has to await further changes to  UK secondary legislation ( Coronovirus Health Regulations 2020) and for similar changes in France, not due until July, for both opening of camp sites and permission of non French national to enter the country. There is quite a bit in the French press about  measures to allow opening of French camp sites - I find La Provence online quite useful.

So it may just  be possible to get a holiday in France  in August( or not)

The French PM has said that (unless something goes wrong in the meantime) bars, cafes and restaurants in the  Green zones of France will reopen on 2nd June  and has encouraged French citizens to plan and book holidays in France for July and August.

It is my understanding that EU governments are working towards a set date when restrictions on foreign travel will be lifted and they are aiming for 15th June, subject to common agreement.
