Very blustery drive up to Bayeux today. Started in rain ended in sunshine but some really strong gusts. Very glad we weren't towing a caravan. The autoroute was almost deserted, very few cars until we reached the outskirts of Caen. Just a few more days, then it's off to Cherbourg and the boat.☹️ Last time we were here I bought some very good 20 year old Calvados at the supermarket across the road. I'm hoping they still stock it.😀

Very wet here near Sedgefield, rain started early evening yesterday and went on till about 10am today, so huge puddles everywhere, really glad we are on a HS!

Yesterday we got a dry spell for a visit to the Navy  museum and the Trincomalee at Hartlepool, today it stayed dry for a few hours so we went to NT Ormsby Hall, and just got back before the rain started up again.

We have another 2 full days here, but unless the weather picks up we will have to give Beamish a miss and find something under cover to visit.

    Suggestions welcome!

KJ. Try the glass museum at Gateshead?  edit oops no it's Sunderland.

Talking of apples, (Steve) here's a little and large photo of a Bramley on top of some of our cider apples. They're all looking  good this year. smile

It's the 6 or 7 weeks of post that I hate! I normally schedule it to be delivered a couple of days after our return using Post Office Keepsafe. Fortunately whilst I as away in June/July this year and ripped the wheel spat off the caravan I remembered to reschedule as the caravan was going into dealers 2 days after our return for work on Alko brakes and I wanted the missing wheelspat replaced at the same time. The breakers that supplied the spat where brilliant to deal with and were dispatching by Post Office to arrive the day after our arrival home.

The thing that I liked about SFM Caravans that supplied the spat was that their descriptions of condition were spot on with plenty of images. There was a label on the back of the spat with part number and as I could not make it out clearly on the part the lady answering the phone collected off the shelf and phoned me back to confirm and warned me that there was a slight mark on it ...... so slight that I can't now find it even though I know I managed to see it once! They agreed to hold dispatch to suit my arrival home and I got a confirmatory e-mail on despatch. I call that good service. Part was £60 plus VAT which I was happy to pay as when looking on the net they were like hens teeth and the accident happened the day after Lunar went into receivership!. £12.50 postage.

I should add that I was pleased with my dealership's charge of £60 to supply and fit along with a new twin waste outlet that was also damaged and to rewire a side makker that had it's wiring ripped out. Apparently they had a chap onsite airbrushing some scratches on another caravan and got him to spend 5 mins covering my slight scratch.

What about the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle? If it stops raining, you could have a look at the actual castle in the town as well. It’s a nice little town, some decent eateries and a few nice independent shops. If you like churches, Hexham Abbey is very interesting, Town is ok as well.

We spent all afternoon in James Herriot Museum, which is a really interesting place, lots to see. Got 2 for 1 as well with our Club membership card, thank you CAMC!😁

Where is the JH museum ?

Would agree that the Bowes Museum is excellent, but we have already been there, and in the town, twice.  Lovely place with a most excellent hardware store!

What have you been up to ET?!   Good you got it sorted reasonably.

We are lucky that DD is available to visit every 7-10 days or so, to water houseplants and sort mail.  She filters out the junk mail and sets aside letters that might need attention, opens credit card and bank statements in case we need updated, so the pile when we return is not too enormous, even after 3 months.

James Herriot museum is in Thirsk. We went more than 10 years ago. We enjoyed it a lot 😉. Glad you enjoyed it takethedogalong.

We loved the Bowes museum too, again awhile ago.

We've had some VERY heavy rain and a few sunny intervals. Sky's as black as night again at he mo. Street lights just came on.

Sorry K, I didn’t realise you were asking are about JH Museum. It is indeed in a Thirsk, so a bit far away for you this time. If you fancy a scenic drive, up via Stanhope and Blanchland is superb, but not on a misty wet day. Sedgefield is a touch away from a lot of very interesting stuff further West, along Hadrian’s Wall. Vindolanda is fascinating.

I thought it might be in Thirsk, , quite far as you say. Our next stop is the CCC site at Sheriff Hutton, but next year we were thinking of using the CAMC site at Thirsk, or a suitable CL, so will remember the JH museum then.

Considering either the Glass place at Sunderland, or the train museum at Shildon for tomorrow if it is still wet.

    Kj, a couple of things.

The best tour guides we came across this year was at Raby Castle. Really interesting but not sure if still open. We used our HHA membership. Combine it with a visit to Barnard Castle not far away.

Secondly we didn't like Thirsk site at all. All grass as well. We'd use a CL next time. All personal taste of course.

As Oneputt said the roads were awash. We ventured out in the afternoon to look at new binoculars but wished we hadn't.

    Hope tomorrow is better.

If it's really miserable weatherwise KJ I think I'd head for some retail therapy at the Metrocentre and see a film there too. smile

    Ssshhh!

No, OH and I are in agreement that we really do not need any more (well maybe just a little!) retail therapy, we already have far too much "stuff"!

We will visit the Designer Outlet while near York, but purchases will be minimal, maybe some Christmas presents for the kids, and some underwear from M&S.

What have you been up to ET?!

Pure stupidity on my part K. After a 3 hour drive to CC Burford, and booking in I obviously relaxed too much. Went around an on site roundabout and cut it too tight!. My initial thought after mounting internal kerb and hitting edge was 'is it my age, have I lost it'!!

Whilst sat in the sun for an hour several other caravans did the same but without damage.

Glad to hear that you are home safely Tammygirl.  Very best wishes to your BIL and also your sister.  It must be such a difficult time for them. Best wishes also to you all with the arrangements for your Mum's funeral.

brue. I know how you feel. When our lovely springer died we said we wouldn't have anymore dogs. Like you we appreciate the freedom for days out but very much miss having a dog around.  We 'borrow' our son's cocker from time to time but realise that we are now too old to cope with a dog full time sadly.

Bakers2 we visited Denver Sluice near Downham Market a few years go and had a chat with one of the guys from the Environment Agency there and he told us that water is quite often diverted from the Fens to Essex when needed. Denver Sluice is the centre of the universe as far as water is concerned in the East of England!

SteveL we are twinned with Bourges and have visited many times.Such a lovely town and the cathedral is beautiful. Your photo brought back some happy memories. Did you stay on the excellent municipal site there?

It sounds as though OP and WN had a good meet up.  Isn't it great to meet up with fellow CT members and put faces to names.

We also had a good day in the garden yesterday doing a lot of clearing and cutting back.  I also panted some bulbs. I couldn't plant them all as some of the pots are full of geraniums which are still flourishing. Still a lot to do but the weather is against us this week I fear. The forecast wasn't very cheerful. Having had a new polycarbonate roof on our conservatory roof a few weeks ago we decided to fit some blinds. Our grand-daughter recommended The Range. They are very reasonable. OH has been busy fitting them during this wet weather and we are very pleased with them.  Hopefully the conservatory will be cosier in the winter and more importantly cooler in the summer.

I spoke to the owner on the phone and he said that I could have a H/S pitch. By the looks on the google photo it appears that there are 2 H/S pitches. Fingers crossed that we've got one of them when we arrive.

Thanks Nellie, hope you get a HS.  We are not that far from Durham here, and it has been very wet, huge flooded areas where there are dips in the fields, and a lot of water on the roads.

Thankfully the rain has stopped, meantime anyway, and it is supposed to be dry when we travel onwards on Wednesday

Oh dear, that is annoying, not a site we have been to but will bear that in mind if we do use it.

I had a run in with a white post in the grass opposite the pitch I was reversing onto in Edinburgh, the post was too short to be seen from our car and OH was busy watching where the rear end of the van was going.  A passing fellow camper pointed it out, so it only resulted in a very small graze on the wheel spat.

They seem to be very keen on sticking these short white posts on every spare grass area on the site, and the site roads are not that wide when manoeuvring a 13 metre outfit!

It looks as if we won't be setting off till Tuesday as the forecast for tomorrow is not good. Had it been anything like to day we would have been fine, with only the odd short shower. Sorry to hear that most of those that are out are having heavy rain.  Glad to hear that those that have just got home have done so safely and managed to get their LVs away in the dry.

It’s totally dry here now. This is a great site for dark sky’s, just about zero light pollution. Spent 10 minutes outside and the number of stars visible is phenomenal. Hopefully the weather will be fine so probably try to get 2 walks in at Titchwell and Burnham Overy Staite

No, but OH thought Seaham could be a place to go if the weather was suitable.

10 years since we were last in the area, stayed at Whitewater for 4 nights, but cannot now remember what we did while there, other than going to see the Transporter Bridge.
