Don't worry Tammygirl you are not alone in forgetting to raise the jockey wheel, it is something I have done once or twice (or more!).

OH has first of 10 cardio rehab classes today so that will be interesting! I'm chaffeur again but what to do for the 1.5 hours of freedom?? Naturally you need to deduct travel time from and back to hospital so can't be too indulgent 😂😂

Wonder if he will get a certificate at the end of the course like Margaret didsmile

I got a certificate too, I did a course of 10 exercise classes in a nearby leisure centre organised by the hospital and run by one of the physios, then went on to do a course of subsidised classes at our local leisure centre.

Only a few of the participants had had bypass ops, most had other heart problems.

Having a couple of days off from child minding and "the house", so have been fitting a couple of new bathroom extractor fans and doing other odds and ends at home.  Caravan needs washed, but weather is not too great, dull and chilly today, so have been putting that off for several days now.

Waiting in for a parcel to arrive, OH is working on the Guide Hall books then plans to go  shopping while I do what's she calls "something more useful".  No doubt she will be giving me a list!

Thanks all for the birthday wishes, didn't do much with moving sites and the restaurant on this one isn't open yet. OH brought out cards I'd been sent from family and he also decorated the van with banners when I was having a shower laughing

Jockey wheel, the problem was that it was right down at its lowest point (uneven pitch) its a pneumatic one, as I reversed the van the wheel tried to swivel but it couldn't due to the A frame cover. We were on a sandy pitch and it dug in and bent the centre baring surprisedembarassed OH took it off after pitching up here yesterday, no mover involved. He's done a fix on it until we get back hopefully.

It rained here last night and this morning so have been lazy doing nothing, will go out shortly though for a little look around. Hopefully moving on again tomorrow bit north of Chambery.

Woke up to a sunny morning so we donned walking boots (what a surprise I hear you say) and walked up Cat Bells onto Maiden Moor and High Spy etc.

We passed a young couple with a 7 year old girl in walking boots and sticks coming off Cat Bells. She said it was her first hill walk so we congratulated her. She then said she wanted to do another in the afternoon! Her parents didn't know whether to be thrilled or horrified.smile. We suggested a few and she couldn't wait to look them up on the map. We were quite thrilled ourselves to see such enthusiasm.

It was good to see quite a few families on the hills.

    Back home for a shower.

"We have had a bit of rain tonight, we certainly need some. We walked round a few reservoirs while away and the water levels were very low."

That's 'cos it's all in Europe. Inclement weather seems pretty widespread through the northern half of Europe from speaking to people. It was raining when we left Freiburg area this morning and it's only marginally less wet here at Lake Konstanz. There's guy with tent, a few pitches down, looking like Bear Grylls hunched over a stove in a woolly hat and anorak. Rather him than me.

Bakers2, so glad that you and your OH had a successful outing to town yesterday.  I am sure the irritations, as annoying as they were, made a welcome change from the troubles and traumas of the last few months.  So glad your OH managed so well.  He must be feeling quite pleased with himself. I hope the cardio rehab goes well. I went into M&S for a few bits and pieces today but joined the queue at the normal till as I couldn't face hearing Ant and Dec's voices on the self service till.surprised I went into another shop for some batteries and only the self service tills were open.  I scanned my packet of batteries and put them in my shopping bag. 'Put the item in the bagging area' a voice boomed so I put them in the bagging area and then picked them up again and put them in my shopping again. The till seemed happy with thatyell

We had a nice day yesterday.  We did some gardening in the morning and then took ourselves off to Elton Hall and gardens.  Lovely house with some amazing portraits by Joshua Reynolds and Millais and the gardens were beautiful.  OH met someone he used to work with when we were wandering about the garden so they had a good long catch up. A very successful afternoon.

No sign of any workmen since Saturday lunchtime except for one lone man keeping an eye on the traffic lights.  There is still a huge trench along the road.  I can only presume one lot of workmen have finished their part of the work and the next lot will arrive at some time in the future to carry out what they need to do.undecided. We have had some useful rain here this morning but could do with a lot more.  Yes, wouldn't it be great to just have rain at night.  I had a word in the ear of the one who might be able to accommodate when in this the Cathedral this morning.  We will see what happens overnight wink

Happy birthday for yesterday Tammygirl.  Bad luck about your jockey wheel.  I hope you OH's repair holds up until you get back.  Best of luck with your next move.

So pleased to hear that you had such a lovely holiday Helen.  I hope you feel duly refreshed and reinvigorated.  I hope it isn't too long before your next break.

How lovely to meet such an enthusiastic new member of the walking community WN. You sound as though you are having a lovely break.

Glad you had a good day in the garden yesterday Millie.  It rained on and off most of the day here yesterday, a d this morning wasn't brilliant either!  We ended up going to one of our favourite coffee/ tea shops, Cobwebs at Abbots Bromley, to cheer us up.

Caravan in for its annual service today and all is well. smile

Happy birthday, TammyGirl, and glad you had a good holiday Helen.

We're off to Cornwall and back tomorrow, to see our daughter's photography exhibition at Falmouth Uni.  It will be a long day!

    Fingers crossed for you Triky.

Must put Elton Hall on our to visit list Millie. Mrs WN wears ear mufflers (she says it's for neuralgia but I think it's for drowning me outsmile) so maybe you could try some when the workman reappear or maybe some nice Headphones. Good luck anyway.

Mrs WN just groaned. She looked at weather forecast for tomorrow. Says no rain (maybe). I've started polishing my boots.laughing Don't tell her but I'm giving her the day off walking, at the moment.

I was back at work today, it was hard after having 10 days off. wink

As usual lots to catch up with, paperwork all over the desk and so many emails I lost count.laughing

OH took the caravan back to storage, and then called into local 4×4 centre to sort out the new parts for the central locking repairs. Next trip out for the van is for its service, but we have a weekend in the peak district later in June. smile

Millie, glad you had a good day.

Really hope things are sorted Triky and you get to your meet.

Safe trip DSB,  Cornwall and back in a day is quite a journey.

Wherenext glad you are enjoying plenty of walking.

We did Catbells some years back, it always looked so inviting. We had to abandon the trek as there was one part that the wife didn’t fancy, and to be honest, I didn’t fancy it much either. It just looked a bit...awkward, if I remember right. I’m sure it would have been fantastic, if we’d carried on.

Helen......have you considered retiring very soon?   No idea how close to being able to retire you are, but I can advise that you grab it when you can!

I had to wait till 65 or would have lost too much pension, but do still wonder if I could have worked out a deal to go sooner.

Unfortunately, I had unique skills that my employer needed, so they did not really want to let me go, I even did stuff for them after retirement, but I do often feel I could have negotiated a better deal.  One lives and learns, I was probably too nice.

Good luck Triky, hope the next "fix" is the last and you can get away.

Kj, I was reading about all the people who want to stay working the other day so I guess it depends on what you really like doing. smile

Hope you are enjoying your new van Oneputt.

Had a busy day with a busy few days ahead, doesn't look as though we'll get to the Bath & West show tomorrow as hoped but might just make it later in the week if we can sort out a few things first.

Good to hear what people are up to on their hols...don't walk your socks off WN you're making me feel tired too! wink

We had much better day after early rain. Walked along the front into Banff this morning and then onto Duff House after lunch. What a grand Georgian building designed by William Adam, and we were fortunate to catch an exhibition of paintings and photos of "Romantic Scotland".

Sounds like another good walk WN, well done. Grand when you can just walk off the site and up onto the hills.

Pepworth grounds make for a good walk, OP, good to hear that your brother managed to get round. The house is not one of the OH's favourites, just too much like an art gallery for her liking.

You'll be glad of the rain, brue, from what you've said. Just a pity that it's going to arrive when you've a day out planned.

I did enjoy my work brue, before I retired I did wonder how I would fill my time, but OH said not to worry, she would find things for me to do!!

As it turned out, I did some additional work, and in a few months earned as much as in a year, but decided that it really was time to give up paid work and instead concentrate on holidaying.  Plus I also took up woodturning, which I had wanted to do for ages.

We no longer had parents or other elderly relatives to worry about......we are the old people now.......so we could please ourselves and leave our daughter in charge of the house.

We have had 10 years of doing what we like, but now a new grandchild has arrived and DD needs our help, and we are very happy to be allowed to look after him 2-3 days per week.

In fact it is really difficult to go away for long as we will miss him so much, but we do need our holidays.

I hated work, in the end. The job was fine, as were the ‘blokes’. It was just the routine of it all. Getting up early, doing pretty much the same thing every day, sitting in traffic queues. Sometimes I would be walking through the door (at work) and saying to myself “why on earth am I doing this?”. I’ve been retired a month now. The funny thing is, it seems an age since I worked. No, I don’t miss it.

How about taking the grandchild away with you. Ive took my granddaughter with me since she was a one year old, she really enjoys it and is always looking forward to the next trip. She's nine now and I'm just planning three weeks away in August with her.

I had to wait till 65 or would have lost too much pension, but do still wonder if I could have worked out a deal to go sooner.

I decided to retire early at just turned 55 and take the hit of losing  £6,000 a year off my full pension. Many at work thought me daft as it was likely that with changes at work I could probably get redundancy in a couple of years and was then working a 4 day week and for 20 years had been taking at least 12 weeks leave a year due to my programing much of my work myself. I also had the chance of taking my pension and carrying on working a three day week. 9 months after I left I was asked to work as a consultant on a regular part time basis. I had to think about that for a whole minute!

Commuting to work was easy. Earliest start time was 7.30, I would have a 10 minute drive, arrive at 7.15, toast on and make a brew before starting the day. Leaving time was often between 6pm and 7.30pm. Most staff had access cards that operated between 7.30 and 7pm. whereas mine was 24 hour.

In the event I made the right choice for me. Some of those working with me that wanted to retire early ended up working until 60 because they were staff that were wanted.

    re Retirement.

I know what Helen means about going back to work after a holiday. Nearly 9 years ago after a holiday I realised I didn't want to go back to work. So after a bit of discussion withe the family I gave 3 months notice and left on Christmas Eve. I worked in IT in a small department with a wonderful eclectic mix of people. I really enjoyed my work, but it was getting more frustrating and pressured. I don't miss the work (the skills I used are very useful in keeping and analysing farm data), but I miss the irreverent gossip from the younger boys (not really boys). I think I was was missed - I was replaced by two people!

But there's no real retirement from farming. My husband is up at 5 every morning and I'm not much later. At least  food lasts longer (I'm in charge of "portion control" and there's no "I'll just finish this off").

It should be easier to get away as I don't have to book time off work. But that hasn't worked out!

I found the little article I was reading the other day, about people who wanted to keep working, I think they are a "specialised" breed but interesting none the less and there are a few who have to keep working for various reasons. I'm glad I retired, but we've known people who've kept working. My Dad's cousin in Canada seemed to love working in a bank so much that he kept going back for more and unfortunately died at the bus stop on his way to yet another stand in session in his seventies. So it was a sort of family lesson that work isn't everything.
