Modern cars and the bells and whistles that come with them these days are not conducive to being easy for the grey generation, we have had our Sportage KX4 for nearly 3months and It still can come up with a bell or whistle at times that is "new" normally leaving me wondering what I have or have not donesurprised

And as for the Park Assist embarassedsurprised

Gone are the days when you could go under the bonnet with a screwdriver, set of spanners or other tools and fix the problem.

Remembering my first car that had 3 wires coming out of the battery - horn, lights and starter motor. How simple was that?

We went for lunch today at the 3 Choirs Vineyard, which is near Newent in Gloucestershire, about 15 miles from the site. They have a very nice restaurant there and you can also stay in rooms or lodges, which we did a few years ago. After lunch we went for a wander amongst the vines, on the trail they have laid out. There were plenty of grapes on the vines, looks like a good harvest. Of couse before we left we bought a few bottles to replenish our supplies.😀

We have enjoyed staying at Easter Cottage (under Frodsham) CL for these last 3 nights but are off home tomorrow. Can thoroughly recommend it if in the area. Will post a review this weekend.

Our plans have been put on hold as my mothers last remaining sibling, my aunt, has just been admitted to a local hospice. We knew the news would be soon but still....

Don't know if there are any B&Q Diamond Card users here? Just had an e-mail from them saying that from 3rd September the 10% discount on Wednesdays will only apply to Gardening products. Another reward scheme down the drain it seemsfrown I appreciate that B&Q are not always the cheapest place for DIY things but it is handy to have a large store where you can see and touch what you might want to buy. I can probably get better plants at Dobbies also with 10% off.

Rarely went on a Wednesday anyway David. When I needed something it was rarely Wednesday.

I remember cursing them some 40 years ago when they opened up in Chester and my wife saying 'Why'? At that time there was a couple of local hardware stores which, whilst not carrying the same stock, would get in anything that I required and had plenty of catalogues, samples and good prices. There were also a couple of other good outlets in Town and a couple of small good builders merchants and a sawmill within a few miles. Also in Chester there was an excellent tool shop.

I told Sue that B&Q would put other local suppliers out of business and then raise prices and reduce stock. They did. They also opened a store near Queensferry which is under 2 miles from where I have lived for the last 30 years with the same effect. That store closed down in favour of the Chester branch.

On garden things, the 10% is often almost 0%, as there are so many multi deals. 4 bags of bark and get them a fair bit cheaper, for instance.

That applies on any day of the week. However, buy them on a Wednesday and you won't also get the 10%, as multi deals are exempt.☹️

Shooting themselves in the foot springs to mind. As they have closed their two much closer stores, ours is now a fair drive. So now even less reason to use it.

Thanks David , hadn't heard the card offer would be reduced. We've been doing a lot of DIY over the last two years and the discount has been useful. We've had extra discount vouchers too due to our purchases so we have had some worthwhile buys. Hardly ever buy garden products there. Suspect they will lose business in September.

Slightly off the subject of B&Q discount card but connected. Brian Quayle one of the original founders of B&Q worked for the same company I did in Southampton many moons ago. He was told by his manager that he had no future in the business, obviously spurred him on to prove him wrong. B&Q started off as a small general DIY outfit in Southampton and went on to be the beast it is today.

Back to discounts at B&Q. I have to say that since I retired I have saved substantial amounts using the 10% discount as once I had retired I did a great deal of DIY. As I get older I am less inclined or able to tackle some of the bigger jobs I once did so the loss of the discount will be more of an annoyance rather than a problem. B&Q say they are lowering prices but that is always a bit difficult for the man in the street to prove. I suppose comparisons with Screwfix (also owned by B&Q) might be the way of confirming as they are generally cheaper than B&Q for the same item.

And Toolstation are usually cheaper still, though do not carry as big a range as Screwfix.  One big advantage is that they deliver free if you spend £10, compared to usually £50 at Screwfix.

We also got the bad news from B&Q yesterday, but as Dave said, there has not been any discount on the multibuys for a long time, so the discounts are not as good as they used to be.

DD will be needing a lot of paint for her new house, so we will need to see if it is worth getting it before the scheme is pulled.   We often found Homebase cheaper for paint, but our local one closed last year.

We have good access to Screwfix as one of our nearest towns is Yeovil where it all started. We tend to use a lot of different outlets and an awful lot of ebay purchases too. Discounts are useful, even better if the items cost less in the first place. I can't see B&Q reducing prices by any great amount.

We were up at 5.30 am, to see son and grandson off on a short holiday, joining up with DIL en route. The builders arrived at 7am, so not much peace at the moment. Suffering to be beautiful. wink

I think Dobbies have always operated as a separate business. Perhaps I should clarify that we have a Dobbies membership card which costs £10 a year but entitles us to a free coffee each per month and 10% off plants. As we make quite a lot of use of the free coffee offer the membership card more than pays for itself over the course of a year. Discount on plants is just a bonus.

All outside patio chairs have new legs and are rubbed down ready for staining. laughing

Might cut 4 new table legs as I have the wood even if I don't fit now.

Spent most of the morning crawling around under the van (static) putting insulation on the water pipes to hopefully avoid the problems we had last winter. It seems a bit ridiculous in the current heatwave to be anticipating another "Beast from the East" but at least we're prepared now! smile

Been to collect van from dealers. An electrical fault resulted in us coming home early last month.  We had been aware of a worrying smell and the engineer showed us the 'burnt' part so I'm thankful we switched everything off when we did. All fixed now thank goodness and it's safe to boil the kettle.

We'll be off again on Wednesday. laughing

    Shopping.

Sometimes we are driven by something so powerful that it is useless to resist.
As soon as I saw this Gin there was no turning back.
    1. I’m a Gin drinker.

    3. Do I need any more reasons? No!

There’s even a mini hip flask, with lyrics on the back.

I’m not sure when I’ll be raising a glass to the Stainsby Girl - who could bear to break open the seal? But Thank You SteelRiverGin and Chris Rea.

Are you left in charge of the hamster brue? Congratulations on your win.

I have had a really lovely day today.  I went on a Spa Day with our daughter, eldest grand-daughter and daughter's best friend.  It was part of our daughter's birthday presents for her special birthday. My first ever Spa Day.  It was such a great experience and so enjoyable to spend a relaxing day with 3 of my favourite girls.

Chairs repaired and rub down for staining. Dining table, coffee table and bench were fine!
