Managed to get much of the outside of the caravan cleaned today, boy was it dirty!! Still got the front to clean and the the whole to Bobby Dazzle, so should get that done in the morning.

After my unsuccessful trip to get new hiking boots last week I ordered a pair of Latitude Extremes, as recommended by Mouleys, on line when I got home on Tuesday, using a discount code donated by WN. They arrived today, great service and they fit just fine and at a bargain price too!!😁

Call from Dr's surgery this morning with results of my routine blood tests, only had them done yesterday morning, results back fast.

All ok except my cholesterol 6.6 so fairly high, I was told (not by Dr) that it would normally mean going on statins. Don't want to go on statins so Dr giving me a call in the morning to discuss.

I've never had a problem with cholesterol before so can only think its the result of our last trip where we were rather indulgent on the things you shouldn't eat. So its back onto my healthy eating Slimming World plan. I put on half a stone while away so its not really surprising my cholesterol is up. Still a month or two eating healthy should drop it back without the need for statins, I've already lost 4 lbs since coming home smile

Nothing exciting here today, weather was mild but we kept getting mizzle. Went to Cobblers this afternoon to collect my boots from getting a new sole and heel on them, decided that I didn't need new ones as they are still nice and comfy and warm.

OH been to Men's shed and post office which is now in the next village as we've lost ours.

Can you ask for another lot of bloods to be done, say in a months time, TG?

I can't use your excuse as my bloods were done the week before we went away!🤣 Never mind but I do get to do another lot on Monday. Always something to look forward to isn't there?

Good to hear you are both now sorted Nellie.👍

I think your body is telling you to have a bit of a rest more often Kj. Mind you I'm not one to tell others when I don't follow my own advice!

    TG

My cholesterol was always well controlled, about 5/6 from memory. However when I got to a certain age I was put on statins and have been on them ever since! I also take tablets for high blood pressure which may be a contributing factor. I got the impression that they changed the goalposts some years back which meant more people over a certain age were put on statins even when their levels were healthy when they were younger. No doubt you will be interested to hear what the doctor has to say?

Our hairdresser arrived first thing this morning. The trouble is we werent expecting her until tomorrow 😳. Her mistake not ours. We did a quick change of our commitments so all was well in the end. We were just an hour later than planned doing everything 😁

David it was the nurse who called to pass on the Dr's comments. Statins or life style change.

I'm against going on statins straight off, until I've been given a chance to correct it with diet, as the NHS website suggests.

I have no problem with weight (although I have got a few pounds to lose) as I'm still within my limits, my BMI is under 25 my blood pressure is 120 over 80 so no concerns there. I don't drink or smoke and I'm fairly fit and active.

My sister is on statins and has been for years, she also has high blood pressure and has had a couple of TIAs. Recently she has lost two and half stone in weight which has helped both her Cholesterol and blood pressure.

Can you ask for another lot of bloods to be done, say in a months time, TG?

WN, the nurse said they would repeat the bloods in 6 mths if I didn't go on statins but I'm going to ask the Dr tomorrow if it could be done before that say 3 mths time, at least that way I will get some idea if its working or not. I just have to cut out Fats. I know I should anyway, I did Slimming World for a couple of years so have all the books and info I need. I've done it before I've just got into bad habits of late, so this is the kick up the backside I needed to get back on track. embarassed

I have had a similar discussion with my GP a few years ago Tammygirl.  My cholesterol was 7 ‘ish from memory but he said that after you take the LDL from the HDL it seemed ok.  Has yours been assessed like that?  I know I need to lose some pounds but otherwise our diet is reasonably healthy and we don’t drink or smoke so it was in my favour.  I didn’t want to contemplate statins as they seem to be one of these ‘could be unnecessary’ medications.  Since that chat nobody has mentioned it again and my bloods are done at my annual review for my Thyroid and Kidneys.  These days we only get to speak to practice nurse about the results.  This month’s chat was ok, different nurse, who seemed to think my blood pressure was ok whereas last year’s nurse seemed to think anything over 70 (bottom figure) was too high and keep my eye on it!!!  So it depends who you speak to perhaps?

It will be red diesel still or it was in my day  Bounds Green diesel depot used 5 five bogie rail tankers a week  surprised

There with costs now for electricity  for industry now compaired to 3 months ago and it seems to have almost doubled,so it seems that in this area where most trains are on 25kw OHL "there could be trouble ahead"

Had a chat with the GP this morning, very good information from him. My HDL is 1.5 so quite good. It turns out that over the last 10 years my Cholesterol has been over 5 but its never been a concern so not mentioned to me, I know when I was working it was below that.

The Dr said that once they do the assessment it gives me a 14% chance of stroke or heart attack. Anyone under 20% didn't used to be advised to go on statins, that was changed a few years ago to 10% by NICE however GPs are not happy with that figure as it would put most folk over the age of 40 on statins which is crazy (his words).

In his opinion as I have no other indicators and no close family members that has suffered a stroke or heart attack or has heart issues, then he would recommend life style changes ie eat less fats.   He said my BP was good as was my weight and BMI and I don't smoke (seemingly drinking doesn't come into it) just reduce the amount of bad fats in your diet and keep exercising. Repeat bloods in 6 mths smile

BP, from what I remember, its the difference between the top figure and the bottom that is the concern, so things like 120 over 70/80 is fine but if it was 120 over 90/100 then that would not be so good. When I was working mine used to 110/65 who would have though that retiring puts your BP up laughing whenever I get mine taken by the nurse or Dr they always say they wished theirs was as good. I must take after my Mum for BP as even at 93 hers was perfect, where as my Dad and Sister both had/have to take tablets to lower it.

When I had a similar discussion with my GP a couple of years ago about lifesyle and diet he recommended having porridge for breakfast every day as very good for lowering Cholesterol.

I was asked if I'd take them but declined. I've been able to keep the test levels low. Unfortunately there are some who are likely to have higher levels whatever they do so no doubt statins are a life saver.

Dr said this morning that statins in folk with known heart/stroke problems will save roughly 1 in 10 from having another one.

Those who are like me just a bit high he couldn't give any indication of how statins would help as its guess work. Given that I have no other issues like high BP, diabetes or over weight the risk is minimal.

I am quite happy with changing my eating habits and testing again in 6 mths to see if it makes any difference, evidence shows it does. if in 6 mths things haven't changed then we will discuss it again.

If it wasn't for the recent changes from NICE the Dr said we wouldn't even be having this talk as I'm below the bench mark that Drs have used for years.

That is the case with many folk, my sister is the same. However there are many that have horrible side effects from taking them. I'm a firm believer in trying to avoid taking something unless you have no choice.

There is another choice and that is to change your lifestyle, doesn't have to be massive changes just eat less fats. So grill instead of fry or roast, eat less red meat or things like sausages and burgers. Pies, pastries and cakes are all high in fat.

Eat more fruit, veg and salads. I don't have a problem with that OH might, he is the one who likes all the things above that are not good for you laughing when he used to be away from home I had no problem with weight or what I ate, blaming him is no excuse I'm a big girl and should just stick to what I like but like other's its just easier to prepare and cook one meal instead of 2 . So he will have to get used to the changes or he will be cooking his own laughing

Millie I like porridge especially in winter, no excuse now I'm retired just never had the time to make it when working. Proper porridge is best not the instant stuff.

Been a busy morning here today we had the mobile caravan engineer here first thing to service the caravan always a worry in case he finds anything but luckily a clean bill of health so here's hoping for another year trouble free touring. That's the van 4 years old now and we have never had a major issue just a couple of little things in the first two years but nothing major and nothing since we must be lucky because I have read some horror stories online about Lunar vans causing bother but ours has been great. Getting a meal delivered from our local pub tonight as a treat looking forward to that then just a night in I think a few drinks and the telly. Weather here not been bad today after a week of almost non stop rain. Hoping to get away in the van in a couple of weeks just to one of our local sites. Sorry to hear about those who aren't too well just now hope things improve soon.

    Have a nice weekend everyone.

Reading all these posts about visits and examinations at the doctors and the taking of pills and tablets makes me think that there is something wrong with me, as I haven't had a physical examination or test for many a year and I take no medication except for the odd paracetamol or ibuprofen for an ache. Long may that situation continue.

Completed the cleaning and Bobby Dazzling of the caravan this morning, using the last of the B D on the car. Then gave Flyte a bath this afternoon.

I don't know how old you are but if you fit into the Old Codgers brigade I am surprised you have not been summoned by your surgery for a well person check up? All the activity you do you would probably pass with flying colourswink

Our caravan is the same age as yours Francis.  Without turning this thread into a caravan review we have been lucky with our Lunar too, except the floor in a couple of places!

My hospital visit today, maxillofacial dept with my pesky wisdom tooth! It’s fate is sealed, and it’s on borrowed time now. Close to a long nerve, so fingers crossed the blighter comes out ok.😱 Trying not to think about it.

Garden for me this afternoon, cutting back and tidying. I like Autumn, it’s like putting something you love to bed for a rest, knowing it will wake up again and give lots of pleasure. Lots of bulbs to go in this week. Our weather has been warm and sunny most of this week, which is a bit scary, but also a bonus in terms of getting things done. Due to get colder next week though.

I hadnt been near my GP for a number of years either nellie. I hadnt been called for my routine check up for nearly 2 years with the nurse either because of the pandemic. Despite leading a healthy lifestyle - fairly slim, non smoker, regular exercise, healthy diet, only occasional glass of wine etc -   I had a TIA 2 months ago. I suggest you go for a check up with your GP surgery while you are at home to be on the safe side. Take care.

I heard of a guy fairly recently that, although registered with a local doctor had never been to the surgery or had cause to contact them for many years. That changed recently and he got in touch with them only to be told he had been taken off their books because there had been no activity on his 'account' and  they thought he had left the area.  It obviously pays to be ill occasionally undecided
