Agree with you there Milliehull.  We have 4, (nearly 5)  teenage grandchildren, the 3 in Hong Kong have beautiful and amazing vocabulary and diction, although our grandson is at the age where he would rather not speak to grandparents!!!  The other lovely 2 in Hertfordshire are ‘different’, certainly not bad but definitely a more London vocabulary.

Listening to the majority of Young and teen children these days  it seems as if their vocabulary is from a different world to what the majority of us have understood in the past, ,it is almost as if  they are not wanting us to understandsurprised

JVB I often have to translate, in my head, what ‘soz’ (sorry-I think!), ‘obvs’ (obviously) mean.  There are a few more which I have forgotten.  I’ve seen this on text messages but it’s odd hearing it being used. Our English language will be forever changed I fear.

We have a 15 year old and an 11 year old, our son's  children, they both talk very well, their mum is a primary teacher so has kept them right.

The 11 year old (girl) goes between not talking, or listening, to talking incessantly, while you are lucky to even see, let alone speak to, the 15 year old!   He spends most of his time in his bedroom, only emerging occasionally to eat.

Seems to be very common these days!

When I was working two of the younger, but should know better, members of staff emailed me as they would text their mates. (Similar to above type speech) I sent their emails straight back saying they were at work now and could they write properly. I wasn’t being horrible I just didn’t want them to send similar to our customers. When our grandchildren used ‘like’ as every other word, I counted them, told them and refused to answer until they repeated it without the  ‘likes’. They still put in a few but  all try not to in my company. I think it is sad that our lovely language is being changed.

We have 4 teenagers now, 2 boys 2 girls. The girls talk non stop always have. The boys you are lucky if you see them let alone have a conversation with them.

Our sons each have a boy and girl, live hundreds of miles apart yet same outcome. Can't say they are into sloppy talking, all are very good. Both sets have mother's who correct them if they do get sloppy. I don't mind to much if they use some modern phrases as long as they answer when you speak to them, nothing annoys me more than a grunt or just a blank look.

Our eldest grand daughter has a lovely way of speaking, she has no accent being a forces child, though we are starting to hear a bit of a scottish lilt now and again since she came to school in Scotland. The school is very keen on grammar and diction, her brother now also at the school is turning into a very smart and well spoken young man.

Our other son lives in Yorkshire his children are picking up the local accent much to their scottish mother's disgust, she is constantly correcting lazy speech.

We noticed our local accent has changed considerably, when we left Scotland in 1972 it had a distinct brogue to it, on return in 1990 that had all but gone. With so many folk moving around the country accents are getting watered down. We now get a lot of Fifes accent creeping in to Perth. Even a lot of the sayings have gone out of everyday speak.

Our three local granddaughters never stop talking, two are teenagers. The three teenagers that live away, not so much. Our son has a way of over coming this, he deliberately puts them on the phone and says, ‘talk to your granparents’ Sometimes slow to start with but with a gentle probing they get going and tell us about their week/lives. Son then comes back on the phone and says,’I didn’t know all that’ makes me smile.

Spent the day getting ourselves back to normality after our week's break. Didn't get that lie in I promised myself. Mind you we did have an excellent nights sleep. Unusual, certainly for me.

Clothes all washed. Place looks like a laundry.

Also sorted out some general maintenance on the caravan and got the bike ready for tomorrow. I'm taking one of them back to the original shop we bought it from as the release for the battery is proving problematical and as we intend to try to sell them soon we need to get it sorted out. Can't sell it with a defect. Not fair on the buyer. Need an earlyish start as the shop is in Chester.

That’s us home after a lovely 9 night break in the van. We spent a week at Chester Fairoaks club site as usual it was great we visited New Brighton first time we had ever been there not a bad place we also visited Chester and Liverpool and the highlight of the trip was the guided tour of Anfield we loved it even SWMBO who isn’t in to football enjoyed it in fact it was her idea as a treat to me as she knew I’ve always wanted to do it such a nice woman sometimes hehehe. We then moved up to Blackpool South club site for a couple of nights and visited Cleveleys and St Anne’s two of our favourite places. All in all a nice trip. The 4 hour tow home today was fine but it poured all the way but the M6/M74 wasn’t busy so we made good time. Volvo and caravan now filthy but I’m busy all week so they will need to wait until next weekend before I can clean them as some of you know this will annoy me as I HATE a dirty car and van so will just need to close my eyes as I walk past them on the drive this week lol. Got a family birthday party next Friday so won’t be away next week but will probably head of for a couple of nights the following week just somewhere local.

Hope everyone else has had a nice weekend

Having been in Glasgow 1963-1967 at university, and then returning to Scotland in 1970, and still here, I get some funny looks when I go to Norway, especially from the younger people, as my way of talking has not altered in 50 years, while even people where I come from now talk differently.

Dialects are much less distinctive than they used to be, and the "Oslo way of speaking" has spread and spread.

While I do have a Scottish accent, having lived in Glasgow, Ayrshire, Fife, Gourock, and now back in Glasgow, I do not have a particular accent.  Some people believe I come from Shetland, others Orkney, but having heard people from there speak, I totally disagree.  IMO, both Orkney and Shetland have distinctive accents, which to me sound nothing like mine.

OH is from Aberdeen, but moved to Ayrshire when she was only 5, so has no particular accent either.

DD was born in Glasgow and has lived all her life here, but people do not believe she is a Glaswegian.  Some reckon she is American, and when in America for work she was told she sounded like a posh east coast American!

Our son, born in Ayrshire, has a similar nondescript Scottish  accent, a very Norwegian name, and works here for a large American company, I must ask him where his  colleagues reckon he comes from!

Am I allowed to mention "Christmas"? I've no idea which of the family (if any) will be coming up, nor where we will be eating (ours or our sons), but I'm getting prepared. As I walked past the freezer aisle in Booths today I spotted frozen turkeys, so popped one in the trolley. It will come in sometime, if not for Christmas. Should I feel guilty that it's not an Fresh Organic Bronze/Rare Breed etc? It's British, Farm Assured, Red Tractor. So no. I nearly committed stockpiling (there is room in the freezer for two), but restrained myself.

And I bought an Advent Calendar (for my sister-in-law's Birthday next week). And that is Organic.

OH has already placed some food orders for Christmas, so it's not just you Goldie!

Our plan was we are going to our son on the 25th, DD and family to the in laws, and we would have a pre Christmas gathering at their place on the 23rd.   OH has however included 2 turkey breast joints in her order, just in case.

The plan now seems to be in doubt as DD said today, just as they were leaving, having come to collect their stuff from the caravan, " Christmas plans may need to be changed, will discuss later" .   And off they went.

We have deduced from that that there is "a problem at the in laws" which she would rather not discuss with her husband there.

SIL's mum has one brother and 3 sisters, so there is always competition to host  Christmas.    Her youngest sister always wants to decide things and take over, so we suspect she has demanded that she does dinner on the 25th, and this is not going down well with big sister, or little brother, or some of the next generation........ we shall see!

Christmas! Christmas! It's Mrs M's birthday tomorrow and I have just had my carefully planned surprise (?) lunch booking cancelled. How am I going to start planning for Christmas? laughing

We are down in Cornwall for the week and it's been a gorgeous day today. After all these years of visiting we are still finding new walks to do. Today we parked at Flushing on the opposite side of the inlet from Falmouth. We walked up from the harbour front and then up again around a couple of freshly ploughed fields, down to Mylor Churchtown, which we have visited many times and then back along the coastal footpath to Flushing. Sat in warm sunshine for our lunch and a view of the little boats going back and forth. Very pleasant! smile

Now, any suggestions for lunch tomorrow? My continued good health may well depend on it! surprised

Goldie. We're so far ahead of the game that we had Christmas lunch with our eldest daughter and family today. We even had crackers and some terrible jokes...I felt for a moment I was in Australia as the weather was very warm and sunny! After lunch we had a Christmas Day walk with the dogs. Back to normal tomorrow and I have already got a Christmas pudding and all the ingredients for a couple of cakes. We've ordered a turkey crown and will collect some local pheasants later. Meanwhile I've got a Halloween 🎃 cake mix kit for youngest grandson. Confused, or what?! wink

Well I have an issue, I still have last years turkey crown in the freezer! We couldn’t have the family here last year cos of lockdown, so we bought a smaller one just for us. Then thought we could use it at Easter but that didn’t work. In the summer our family stayed but they wanted to be out and about all the time so we didn’t have it then. Going to sons this year, think I will take it as an extra, or maybe New Year when they are here. Not sure what it will be like though.

Happy Birthday to Mrs M for tomorrow, moulesy. Hope you manage to sort out a nice meal somewhere.

Sounds as if you had a really good time away, Francis. Shame about the wet drive home and the dirty vehicles.

DD, it was the same the last time we visited Stourhead with regards to the lack of colour in the foliage, but it was a weekday so we weren't bothered with huge crowds.

Hope you get the bike sorted, WN. Pleased to read that you managed a good night's sleep last night, all that driving home just have tried you out good and proper.

We've not even turnabout Xmas yet, but do still have a special Christmas Pudding which we got in January, with a best before date of 2022 so should still be fine.laughing

Is Fowey/Bodinnick too far for you? We have always had lovely food in The Old Ferry Inn at Bodinnick. Fantastic walk as well nearby, The Hall Walk. Bodinnick to Polruan, ferry from Polruan to Fowey, walk through town, then another ferry back across to pub.

Or, The Navy Inn, just off promenade close to Jubilee Pool in Penzance. Admiral Benbow is good in Penzance, but food is nicer in Navy Inn👍

Many happy returns to Mrs M, have a good day, wherever you go😁

Gosh all this talk of Christmas food shopping far to early for us.

Had a lovely picnic lunch overlooking a lovely lake and superb warm weather then around a different area we have not been to before should have been a garden visit as last day today but no signage anywhere and it seemed to be in the middle of nowhere and google map on OH's phone could not find it so came back via another smaller lake and went for a walk around that before coming home and got half a mile from home in the middle of our village and the local Gendarmes (3) stopped us and they got confused as our car is UK but french reg so walked to OH's side then realised he was not driving so came around to my side to do breathalyser test a 1st for me all clear and said ok you can go, bet the local hunt were avoiding the village as it was afternoon after their long lunch.

Weather to warm up for next two days upto 26C then a sharp drop by 10 degrees and rain so will be gardening the next two days before the rain comes as have some plants to put in.

    Happy birthday to Mrs.M tomorrow.
