Have the Grebes got any chicks yet Ttda?

They're gorgeous little things when they come out. All stripey. Look like they've got PJs on. Great to photograph as well as they often sit on the backs of their parents hitching a ride. Keep an eye on them.

Another sunny day, I even ventured up the garden to cut back some conifers that were threatening our plum tree, and some others that were  trying to get into the shed.  Totally worn out now!

The birthday card we posted on Friday evening, with a first class stamp finally arrived with our son this afternoon, I  could  have walked the 25 miles faster than that!

Tomorrow we have a Waitrose click and  collect, so OH rang them to ascertain how we get hold of our order.  It is an in store collection, but we are allowed to enter the store without joining the general queue, and need to show our order number at the welcome desk.  The order will then be brought to us.  Will be interesting to see what is and is not available.

OH finally managed to log on to the Matthews Cotswold flour shop and selected a large bag (16kg) of strong white and one of  strong wholemeal, however she decided not to complete the purchase when she discovered that the delivery  charge would be £14.15.  surprised

There was no mention of any free delivery available on a certain value of purchase.

If one was purchasing just the minimum order of 5x1.5kg bags, the delivery charge was almost as much as the cost of the flour!

We will make do with what we have meantime, and review the situation in a couple of weeks.

I was in our local small Asda today for bread and milk but because of the "one way system" I was forced up and down every aisle. As I went down the baking aisle I spotted some bags of plain flour!!!!!! They were Bero and quite expensive at £1.50 for a 250g bag but I snatched one up anyway as I've been craving Yorkshire puddings for weeks and had run out of flour ages ago😊

Another sunny day today but we have the cold northerly wind back again so as a consequence we shorten our walk along the river and then called in to a virtually empty Morrison's.   Quite a lot of flour on the shelves so maybe a sign of improving stocks or people just not hoarding

Bright and sunny, not warm but ok if in the sun.

OH finished off the raised bed today smile just got to get top soil and then membrane and chips for the top.

I tackled another part of the big border/bed in the front garden, more crocus bulbs got dug out. Really trying to get the garden sorted for easy maintenance, so the Japanese anemone have been dug up again, I keep doing it every year but they are really difficult to get rid of.

Off shopping tomorrow morning first thing before it gets busy. My sister is getting online deliveries but they are always missing some items, last order was missing, Pork chop, Castor sugar, Mince and Milk. Don't now why there is no shortage when in the shops.

Frost forecast for tonight but it doesn't matter, checked it last night for our area and it said 3c so didn't put fleece on anything, shouldn't have trusted it as this morning we had a frost so now lots of the plants have been caught yell

    Surely not £1.50 for 250g  ??

ŵWas it not 1.5kg?  That is the normal size of a bag of flour

Have to admit to local knowledge helping me as I visited the workshops there many years ago.

When looking on Google maps, to check I had not imagined it, was surprised to see how big the Snowland site is.

Finally gave up on our holiday booked for Greece in September, but managed to rearrange it for the corresponding week in 2021 - of course, always assuming hotels and airlines are still in business. The good news was no extra cost and no amendment fees. smile

Now searching for cottages in Yorkshire or Lake District - quite enjoy the distraction from present problems! smile

Do you still have presents to unwrap? A taped recording of the Queens speech? Traditions, like falling asleep an hour after eating? How exciting.

Woops my mistake: just checked and it isn't 250g but is actually 1.1kg! I thought the bag seemsed smaller than usual but not quite as small as I'd first thought 😀

And yet another fine, sunny but cool day, especially when the sun went behind a cloud. We he an hour and three quarters walk this morning then after lunch I spent a similar amount of time out on my bike including the steepest ascent so far this lockdown. Tried to walk off the leg aches by taking Flyte out for a couple of miles walk once I'd replenished my thirst. Then it was off shopping after dinner, Morrison's first, where we got some bargain veg and pies, so that dinner tomorrow solved, then to Tesco for fruit and bread and finally to Aldi. All groceries got apart from flour, maybe next time as OH isn't desperate for it yet. Didn't have to queue go into any but only when waiting for a till. We spotted that our Recycling Centre was open when we headed to the shops, and there was a queue there, but closed as we passed on the way home at 6:45. We do have stuff to be got rid of but will wait a while before venturing down there, although I imagine that there will be queues for quite some time. At least it should alleviate to prospect of flytipping.

Take a look at Seat House CL website page for contact details for Oak Cottage. Mr and Mrs Wellock own this lovely cottage as well as the CL, and it’s superbly placed for Dales, and not too far into Lakes. We stayed in March, absolutely lovely. Enclosed garden for dogs, lovely views, nice roomy place with all you need. You can look at it on various cottage letting sites, but my advice is to contact Mrs Wellock direct, saves on booking fees😁Twenty minutes lovely easy drive from Skipton, lots of nice places close by and brilliant walking.

These are very nice as well, we haven’t stayed yet, but on our radar. Pub does great food, Whitby 20 minutes, Pickering 20 minutes

Cleaned the car today, actually put it on the road alongside the house. Confused as to whether that is still not allowed but seemed have got away with it!!! Strange how dirty a car gets when not in use.

Thought I should look at our electric bikes today. Started with mine, pumped the tyres up but the battery in and off I went, all OK. Then started on Margaret's (different colour!) Couldn't get battery to work. Put it on charge still nothing. Just had a new battery in the car so not having much luck with batteries at the moment. Unfortunately a new bike battery is going to cost a jolly sight more than a car one. Mind you thought I had found a bargain on line. Only £23 but then realise it was only the battery casing, just as well I didn't order it!!! I think I can get one from China for around £200. They were not particularly expensive bikes but as we are not sure how much longer we will be cycling for the price of a new battery is as far as I am prepared to go!!!

DK, my OH is rather good at sourcing e-bike parts. If you need help, let me know. He might know a good place to get a battery. 🙂

DK, are the batteries of similar age and usage? Perhaps it's something simple like a poor contact.

I too have ordered from Matthews this week- but I thought the prices were reasonable. I spent about £50 on flour (one 16kg, and 3 packs of 5 1.5kg's). The carriage is £9.39, and playing Devil's Advocate, I think it's fair not to hide the cost in the items and then say "free postage etc".

I use a lot of flour - bake a loaf a day and a cake twice a week. I would not like to run out and have to buy shop bread. And with silaging coming up the cake consumption will go up!

I admit to being a bit of a hoarder/stockpiler - but it's always been the case. We're not likely to get snowed in now, but who knows what the future may hold.

P.S. - I've just remembered I've an order coming sometime from The Watermill at Little Salkeld.

I've had two 16 kg deliveries of flour one from Matthews and another from Amazon. I've been pleased with both and although the delivery has a cost I'm glad to be stocked up now. smile

David when we had the same bikes as you, OH got a new battery for £150 for it that was a couple of years ago though, so could well be £200 now. I remember he had to change the plate that it fits into as well but it did come with it so no big problem.

Blimey , who would have thought it surprised.

    TG

I have found a new battery on Ebay for about £170 which seems to come direct from China! Looking at the description and size it seems to match the one we have which I imagine is a pretty generic type of battery. The voltage and AH seem to also match. There are people in the UK who will refurbish a battery but that is more expensive than buying new! Trouble with buying from China is that delivery can be extended, probably early June, but given how far it comes I suppose its not bad!!!

When your battery went do you recall how it went by which I mean did it gradually lose distance capability or did it just go flat?

Had a stroll round the locality this morning, and thought I’d take a photo of these English longhorn cattle with their calves. They’re a localish breed, and spend most of the year in pretty rough fields.

Expect I’ll be seeing a lot more of them this summer....😱

    🙂🙂🙂

I was wondering if the greater distance to us made it more expensive, but OH said she had not been asked to enter a postcode, and that it said it was a "weight based delivery charge", which is strange as your order (38.5 kg) would have been heavier than ours (32kg).

Our spend would have been £40.65, so £14.15 on top for carriage was a lot in proportion she thought.  She reckons you got a bargain there Goldie!

They are lovely aren’t they Pliers. We got a lot closer, last ones we saw, but the photo is deceptive. There is a very substantive fence between us and mother and sons!

We love the huge range of lovely farm animals you see out and about in the fields, I particularly like Belted Galloway and Highland Cattle, seen all over Dartmoor. We spent a good bit of time shooing them of road to carefully drive past!😁
