What are you all up to

DIL's grandparents were from Islay, she and her Mum have a small holiday home there where her Mum spends most of the summer, but we have not made it there yet. Other members of her family seem to make good use of it so it is always "fully booked"!

I love the map of Islay Kj. Such a clever idea. It must have taken you quite a while.
I have been reading what everybody has been up to over the weekend. Saturday wasn't a bad day weather-wise. Sunny most of the day but with a chilly breeze. We did quite a lot in the garden. OH is still busy doing DIY jobs out there. He has made a wooden shelf to cover our old brick built BBQ that is no longer used and we have re-located all the herbs in pots there as it is near the house and gets the sun. It looks good. I also did lots of washing that had piled up somewhat during the wet weather. Rather depressing weather yesterday - dull, very grey and no wind. What my mother would have called a 'non weather day' and I lost my motivation to do anything. It was one of those 'wobbly' days. so I took a walk to a friend's house who lives about a 20 minute walk away to post her birthday card through her letter box so that was my fresh air and exercise for the day and I ironed all the washing when I got back. Still grey and dull today but I am trying to motivate myself. I am busy deep cleaning the downstairs loo but am having a break with a coffee at the moment while catching up on here. Stay safe folks.

Thanks Millie, yes it took a long time to make, lots of of thinking and planning.
It is made from 20mm thick solid oak boards, biscuit jointed together. I used an O S map and scaled it up by hand on squared paper to get to the required size, then planned where the boards were needed and where the joints had to be to make it strong enough to hold all the bottles safely.
Then I traced the outline onto the wood and cut it out......that took ages!
The little shelves are made mostly from the cut out pieces, Each one sized for the bottle, the recesses for the bottles were turned on my lathe.OH did the finish on the wood, 2 coats of Danish Oil, then the shelves were fixed securely with 2 screws right through the board and into metal sockets in the back of each shelf.
I have recessed 2 metal hanging bars into the back and these will attach to 2 wall brackets of the type that are used to hang kitchen cupboards.
Then I had to do it all again as DIL had asked me to also make one for her brother, who has his 50th in August. That one was quick to make as I now knew what I had to do.

It is our second oldest grand-daughter's 24th birthday today and she is sick to death of everyone saying 'May the 4th be with you' over all the years!!

Found this in my travels today, interesting how the spelling has changed in 153 years and Penshaw monument in the background.
In the second photo is a 9F in 1965 that has just crossed the Victoria viaduct. The Sunderland to Durham line diverges on the left. The today photo is taken from the same bridge and it is difficult to imagine how the are the same but you can see the path to Cox Green on the left and the old track way to the viaduct on the right. .

I think you mean the same to you it is

Millie, I suspect you are missing your days at the Cathedral, amongst other things? I know I missed my volunteering when I had to give it up to take on caring duties. I am doing lots of history research when I can, nothing too organised, but trying to fill in some knowledge gaps around some of my favourite bits of British history. Usually driven by either watching a film, or reading a book, and wanting to know more about the less well known characters. Then when the leash is off, we can visit some places to find out more.😁

its been quite a nice day here today, mix of sun and light cloud but nice and dry and warm when in the sun.
OH been busy up in the attic, storage side. He has put up insulation between the beam/rafters and then covered them over with hardboard. Should help keep some of the cold out and heat in come winter. The other side of the attic was converted years ago so that was all done with insulation then, you can tell the difference when going from one room to the other. The floor was done on both sides with insulation than boarded over at the time the first room was done.
We are finally getting jobs done that were started but not finished. More things to sort out once he's finished and put into some sort of order. I think we have finally got all the boys stuff to them. I have a big box of assorted bedding up there will have to give that a going through at some stage.
I've been busy in the greenhouse, broad beans are really coming on so I have re- potted them into bigger pots, hoping to get them in the garden soon, just need to finish hardening them off though as we are still getting a bit if a frost some nights. The French beans are really slow compared to the broad beans. I've also made up another wall hanger with plants and 2 smaller ones to go on the shed wall. One big tub to go in the corner and that's all my bought plants now gone.
I also dug over and stripped part of one of the beds that I didn't like, now replanted with less fussy plants, so should be a lot easier to look after.
I probably shouldn't say this but I'm really enjoying 'lockdown' its given me the time and the inclination to get on with jobs. In the last 9 years the garden has just been tidied up and made to look decent, this year its getting a proper going over.
The weather has helped of course, we usually miss it at this time of year as we are usually in France/Spain.
Nice hour relaxing on the back sun deck after the work done, got the big recliner chair out and had a nice 40 winks
time now to finish off the dinner, chicken curry tonight with fried rice and naan bread.

Yes TDA, I am really missing my volunteering duties at the Cathedral. However one of the existing guides is doing a wonderful job of ringing me once a week to talk about various aspects of the Cathedral tour. He gives me 3 or 4 topics to read up and research during the week and then he 'surprises' me the following week with which one he has chosen for me to talk to him about, It is definitely keeping me on my toes Hopefully we will all be able to get out and about (although maybe in a limited way) sometime in the next few months.

I must admit Tammy that we're enjoying the area as well as the garden. We also miss out at this time of year. Even if we're home we're away, if you know what I mean, so to get to know your own patch again has been a bonus.
Apart from the shopping aspect we've not been bothered about the lockdown but can see that MiL is becoming increasingly agitated the longer it goes on. Mrs WN has to visit Marks tomorrow, on an every third week rota, so we've promised to take her for a car ride to break things up.
Had a lovely long walk today as we decided to walk into town to pick up prescriptions and drop things off at the surgeries. As it was such a lovely day we took the scenic route. Grass also got cut today so all in all feel that I deserve the glass of beer that is awaiting me in the front room. Cheers everyone.

I am glad there’s someone else who is actually enjoying this strange situation, I thought it might just be me. (That said, I am acutely aware that for others it is extremely stressful, especially if you have vulnerable family and friends, or are suffering financially, or are out there delivering support services. You have my total respect)
I think it’s being able to get stuck in, sort out a lot of jobs and the garden, and the weather so far has been a lovely bonus. Bit cooler now, but still very dry. Bit further South than you, so some of our tender plants are back out now, freeing up greenhouse. I am having a great time out on my bike as well, no pressure to “keep going” so my mileage is building up pain free😂 Missing seeing Mum and Sister terribly, and other family members more occasionally though.

M, with that app, how do you know that one's photo is down to the 500 Kbytes or less? Or is just me being thick, again?

Thanks, M

Well done NTH.! Lovely photo of Flyte as well
Dont get me wrong. Most of the time I am really enjoying this time to ourselves as well. It is good to get some time to do jobs properly without having to rush. The house and garden are looking so much better and it is nice to have the peace to enjoy the garden. I really miss our family though and occasionally have the odd down day like yesterday. Weekends are the most difficult as that is when we would normally see them all. I think we will have to get the fleece out for our tender plants as frost is forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday nights ❄

It was the Hadtail that I was looking at, but I guess it will be a while before I am able to investigate properly. I'm a bit concerned about the weight of them, and how I'd carry it in the van. The other option is to get a lightweight road bike, or crossover, which I'd be able to lift onto the roof bars of the car.

Not quite, M. Must find a way of getting rid of the white bars at the bottom....but I'll work on it. Thanks again for the help. I also need a way of transferring the photos on the phone onto the I-pad as that's what I'm using at the moment to post on here. It's hard work posting from the phone.
