I thought I had plenty of baking flour but it has gone quite quickly, I'm down to my two last half bags of SR and plain. Noting coming in on delivery orders so I found a 16kg bag on Amazon and ordered it. We had a proper cream tea today. Clotted cream from an organic farm near Weymouth and home made scones etc...but that counted for a further loss of flour so I was getting worried! Still have my big bag of bread flour. smile

    Ooohh, you piggies.smile

Mrs WN found another bag of SR flour on the shelves at Tesco on Wednesday and gave it our elderly near neighbours who is always baking. She couldn't get her head around my Wheat problem but didn't refuse the flour.smile

Typical isn't that we can find flour and don't use it but...

I'm hoping our next farm shop order might turn up a bag of flour which I'll give to our neighbour (depending on the arrival of the Amazon delivery,,,)

Yes, it was a lovely cream tea, just like on holiday,. laughing

It's the one thing I really miss when out and about. A bacon butty and a mug of tea from a cafe. The bread would be off limits. I can usually find something to drink in a pub but seeing bacon butties must be like catching a whiff from a cigarette to a new convert to no smoking.

I've marked Seaham down for future reference.

We should be at River Breamish experiencing our first visit to a club site  but instead I've spent the day gardening (heavy duty not pleasurable šŸ˜€), our trip has been postponed to 21st July, but not really expecting it to happen.....

Yes it was, I got chatting to a local (on the next bench almost shouting to each other) and he told about how it has changed, also about the lifeboat museum and will definitely return when it is open.

After a couple of days where we've had showers on and off, and haven't the plants welcomed the rain, this morning started off in the same vein. However the light rain did stop and the afternoon turned sunny and warm, if a bit breezy, but it was  jacket off walking weather. Still managing to get my 8 mls or so a day in regardless of the weather. Hopefully tomorrow will be brighter and less windy and I'll get out on my bike again.

We were there last year too, C S. Did you go down to the harbour, as there's another statue down there, this time of the Lifeboat Coxswain?

WN it is certainly a place worth a visit.

We have just opened our second last 3kg bag of strong white, plus we have about 6kg of strong wholemeal and other mixed flours, so we are OK for a few weeks yet, but we will run out of strong white first.

Hopefully before then we can either find some in the shops or order a 16kg bag on line.

Having tried for a few weeks to get either a delivery slot or a click & collect, last Tuesday I got a click & collect slot for Wednesday, the next day, with Tesco.  It was like winning the lottery!

Amongst other things I ordered self raising flour and bread flour.  On collection, which I was quite impressed with - stay in your car, someone comes out but stays well away and asks for name and last 4 digits of order number, and it's all put in the boot by them - I actually got the flour and bread flour.  It was like winning the lottery again!

It's amazing how priorities have changed - from bagging that fantastic pitch to getting 2 bags of flour wink

Fairly decent this morning not warm but not cold either.OH decided to start the sort out of his man cave (shed) quite a few things to give away, MH ramps, caravan ramps (why do we have 3 sets of them) 2 of the flat black waste containers, we only need 1. So he has made a start of things to go to the skip when its open, things to give away and some things to sell smile

I go stuck into more sewing, not face masks this time. Been a bit of a funny day as I've been busy but don't have much to show for it.

Had a really heavy hail shower this afternoon. No gardening today as the ground is to soft and wet, makes a change from a few days ago. smile

Not sure what tomorrow might bring yet will sort that out when I've had breakfast and see what kind of day it is. We don't always trust the forecast here as its rarely right.

I bought SR flour in Asda on Thursday 1.5 kg bag. Probably last me until this time next year laughing although I am going to make a banana loaf tomorrow.

Sadly I didn't and I think the local chap said that part was closed off due to the virus but he did talk of a very brave life boat rescue that was fully described in the museum?

But I am planning a full day trip when ever things are back to normal.

We were in the area last September, staying at Whitewater.  It was a really enjoyable visit and we were surprised and delighted with how much the area had to offer. The canoe slalom by the site was great to watch. The Royal Navy Museum, Hartlepool, was excellent, The Glass Centre in Sunderland, loved the demonstrations. As you say Seaham was lovely, and also Saltburn.  Looking forward to a return visit, whenever we can.

I'm hopeless at scones - but my 12 year old grandson makes good ones, using bread flour. So I'll try that next time.

Goldie. I'm not good at making them either but I used the BBC recipe and they were very good. I've been thinking about what else the bread flour could be used for if I get stuck with that and nothing else.

More "domestic" news now. Cut my hair this morning, doesn't look too bad, ha ha. šŸ™€

OH got a scone recipe from a school friend who trained as a domestic science teacher,  we use that recipe all the time now, I can get OH to post it if anyone is interested.

I don't know much about flour, but is there any reason why strong flour cannot be used in the same way as ordinary plain flour?

Our scone expert said if you have no SR flour you can add 2 tsp of baking powder to plain flour to make it like SR.

Goldie, can you post your grandson's scone recipe?

I'd like both Goldie's and KjNelln's recipes please. Useless scone maker myself.

Anyone got a foolproof sponge one?

Just had delivery of geraniums from local nursery for mad and dads grave, they're looking very good. I need to go to their house as my Dyson vac is playing up, had it serviced and the dustbin comes off the cleaner, hit my instep twice and badle bruised it 😢. Servicing company won't be recommended from their attitude! Mum has a very good almost new Miele one, besides its 6 weeks since we checked on things there. Can't take the lawnmower as if I get stopped in not sure about their reaction. I think there maybe a mower of sorts in the shed, her gardener bought his own. I'm nearer than my brother!

I'm pottering, literally, in the garden, splitting - not always intentionally 😯 house plants and changing their compost.

Dried my towels, lunch in the garden, bit more pottering. Grass needs a cut but rather wet at the mo., its certainly thicker and blusher since its treatment šŸ˜€

One of the books I ordered weeks ago for granddaughters in NZ arrived today. I'd had an email from the book depository Thursday to say there were delays because of the lack of flights! Pinged that to my daughter and she replied that eldest had asked the mail person a couple of times and asked a courier driver if they had her books 😢😢. Great video of her tearing the packaging after discovering the parcel in the mailbox, they're like those in USA at the edge of the property as she went out to play with her neighbour friends on her scooter, they have relaxed from level 4 to level 3. Still social distancing but a little more freedom. I expect they'll be back at work, daddy already is but schools not yet reopened apart for very few children, before they all arrive. Still they'll still enjoy them!

The recipe was just word of mouth - sorry! All I can remember is to use bread flour rather than SR or plain. I’m not much of a one for recipes - more bung stuff in and hope for the best!

Went out for our morning walk. Normally take about an hour and a half. Todays took 30 minutes longer as we met a lady we know walking her dog.

We haven't seen her and her husband for a while as we know he has Alzheimers. Anyway she wanted somebody to talk to about everything that has happened to him over the last 3 months. He became so violent, fortunately not with her but with people stopping him going out, that he was taken to the local hospital!! No places in any EMI care home, council or privately run, so he was dumped on the NHS. Anyway long story short he's now in an excellent private EMI place and is content as he has walking areas outside. The place is in full on lockdown. The Social Care problem cannot be just left when this pandemic ends. Too many people with mental health issues are languishing in hospitals.

It was a bit cool this morning but dry. A lot more cars on the move and you can see people getting restless.

I'll leave the grass cutting another day or so as we had some treatment put on yesterday. Any excuse.

Scones, and cakes, are things that can come out quite well with GF flour so I make some very now and then. I use Buttermilk to help with lightness. It used to work with ordinary flour when I made them years ago. Thinking about it I'll put a request into our shopper to add some buttermilk onto the list next week.

The recipe I used suggested a squirt of lemon juice into the milk to replicate the effects of buttermilk. It certainly worked, the dough was really light and the scones were tasty. BBC Goodfood recipe LINK. smile

Sunny day but not warm, had a quick rain shower around lunchtime but back to sun again.

I've been back at the sewing machine again, OH doing jobs in shed and attic, might go for a walk later on.

I've got a black eye surprised not sure how, as it wasn't there when I got up this morning but when I went into the bedroom, after breakfast to make the bed, I noticed it then. Can't blame the OH for hitting me in the night as its on the wrong side laughing

Break over back to the sewing.

    Banana bread still not made.

took a trip to Tesco, OH went into the shop for essentials, while Bramble and me went for a walk around the old windmills and Rail line, we had a break on top of a stone quarry slag heap which gives views out across  Portland Bill to the Channel, Weymouth Bay and Lyme. There were a few large containers ships sailing in the distance as well as 3 RN warships out there keeping us safe.

Now with the new Roller blind fitted in the 'van' I just need to put the curtain rail and pelmet back up, then fit a couple of spotlights and wire in some rear speakers...…..

Bright and sunny here though not particularly warm. Just been across the fields with the dogs and back along "quiet" lanes - well, loads more car traffic than last week to add to the walking and cycling families. Also had to wait longer to cross the by pass - the evidence of increased traffic is pretty obvious. frown

Just waiting for a chilli loaf to finish baking and my turn cooking tonight - pollo alla cacciatora - see I've remembered a bit of Italian already! laughing

We've just made an expensive purchase (not) for the caravan - a magnetic catch for a cupboard. £0.50 plus £1.00 postage.

My husband was convinced that if he searched through various drawers full of stuff that "will come in useful one day", he would find what he wanted. No luck. But he did find a book of stamps and some sealing wax and a seal with his grandfather's initials on.

    Margaret's Scone Recipe........

this uses SR flour, if you only have plain flour add 2 tsp of baking powder to 225g plain flour first.

We usually make a double batch using the Kenwood.

    225 g SR flour

    1 tsp baking powder

    pinch of salt

    40g butter or margarine

    2 tbsp caster sugar

    130-140 ml milk

Sift together flour , baking powder and salt, cut butter or margarine into small pieces and rub in. Add caster sugar and mix gently.
Mix to a soft but not sticky dough by adding the milk gradually.

Roll out to a minimum 15 mm thickness and cut out scones.  Brush tops with milk if desired.

Bake at 220C for 12-15 minutes

re scones - one thing I remember from DS at school - use bicarb and cream of tartar (not baking powder). Don't know why. Maybe it was a 50/60's thing.
