Glad to hear that you got the all clear brue. If only we could get some nice spring weather. It would  give us a bit of a lift. It seems to have been a long winter with quite a lot of health problems for some. Snow was forecast here but we didnt get any. It is surprising how often we get snow on or aound our son's birthday. It snowed the day he was born 50 years ago.

It has been mentioned, sadly within my hearing, that " Brian could do with having a "Skinny" spare tyre  embarassed "

Monthly  meeting this morning , of residents and tenants ,with local police and councillors,   both local and county ,  also neighbourhood watch,  held at our local pub , good attendance this month

One classic comment from police in attendance to councillors,

"it used to be quite obvious in the past if a vehicle needed a pull as it was weaving in front of us , but now we cannot be sure ,  as it may be just avoiding the potholes"cool

Millie. After the celebrations hope you can do your trip to warmer climes. Just booked a short break at Hillhead, easy for us at this time of the year and can enjoy a mooch around Dartmouth etc. Hopefully it will be a successful Chihuahua holiday too. 🤹

Had a bit of the  winter blues this week,  cry cheered up though reading what everyone has been up to. smile You have been a busy lot! wink

We woke up to snow this morning,  but then the sun came out and it turned into a lovely day.

OH had a trip back to the optician, he had been having problems with his new glasses. Another new pair now ordered, just hope these are better.

We are off to Derbyshire tomorrow, forecast not looking too good, but as we have postponed the break once, we are going this time!! Need a change of scenery and a break. Caravan is packed, so just a few hours at work in the morning and then we will be off.

Hope you have a lovely holiday Millie, and glad you are feeling better Brue.

    Enjoy the weekend folks.smile

MiL passed a fitness test this morning so we followed Ttda's suggestion and we all went off and enjoyed a visit to East Riddlesden NT Manor House, near Keighley in Yorkshire. It was a lovely drive to get there, over the moors with beautiful views of snow covered hill tops. The sun shone. There was plenty in the visit to please all 3 of us.

Then we went to a moor top pub for lunch. We drove back through Otley which was closed for flooding on Saturday when we arrived. The river is still quite high so the forecast rain for tomorrow isn't welcome.

A most enjoyable day though and thanks go to Ttda.

Hope Helen and Trevor enjoy the break. Pub lunches called for methinks.

Thanks Wherenext and Brue. We haven't managed a trip away since November so looking forward to it now.

Hope you enjoy your trip Brue, let's hope the weather improves in March.

I have really felt for all the people flooded, we have had it happen to us and it is horrible.

Enjoy Hillhead brue. Doesnt it give you a lift to have a break away planned. Also hope you have a good time in Derbyshire Helen. I can join you with the winter blues. So fed up with it now. I hope TG is having a good time. Pleased to hear nellie is keeping safe and dry.

OH and I hsve decided that we are going to enjoy Tenerife come what may. We probably wont travel around too far and will keep away from crowded places.. I have shown OH how to.wash his hands PROPERLY as taught to me when I worked for the NHS.😁. We will take plenty of hand gel with us as well. We had such a lovely lunch with our son today. It was so good to have him just to ourselves for a couple of hours 😊. We had such a good catch up. Lots of reminiscents and laughs.

Boiler man came late afternoon and as expected told us there is no way back for our old boiler. So decision made and another guy will come first thing Saturday to give us a quote. We shall have to raid the piggy bank 😯. Fire in living room and background heaters are keeping the house warm and we shall have to make an early morning trip to Bannatyne for a hot shower most days until we go away. Other than that it will be a good wash with a kettle of hot water 😀

We were in the same position a year ago and it will be a year come April since we have had our new boiler. Ours had to be moved as it vented out into a neighbours garden as that is no longer allowed apparently. We went the whole hog and changed from a conventional boiler to a Combi which got rid of all the tanks in the loft and hot water is "on demand" , certainly provides more heat than the old system. After a couple of quotes we decided on British Gas who did a good job for us.

Sorry to hear that your boiler is condemned, millie. Will you be able to get a new one fitted before you go away?

Good to hear that you all had a good day out at East Riddlesden Hall, WN. Looks as if MIL has suffered no ill effects from her fall, thankfully.

Pleased to hear that you were passed ok by the doc, brue. Hope that the weather has improved by the time you head off to Hillhead.

Enjoy your trip to Derbyshire, Helen. Fingers crossed that you don't encounter any of the flooding.

We woke to sleet which turned into large snow flakes and by 9:30 the grass was white. Thankfully the snow stopped by 11:00 and the snow soon disappeared. Fine sunny but cold afternoon so had a drive into Halstead and had a walk along by the river. All ready to move on again tomorrow into Hertfordshire this time.

We have had a combi boiler for years DK. It was great when our 3 were teenagers  and addicted to showers!! It must have saved us a lot of money over the years. We have also been told that we will have to have a 'chimney' installed as ours vents onto next door.

Millie,  sorry to hear your boiler is beyond repair, we replaced our old boiler about 5 years ago, we also had a combi. We replaced all the pipework and radiators too as no 2 were the same in the house.

    Safe travels tomorrow Nellie.

If you are taking hand gel ,on a plane, how does that fit in with the security of taking "liquids"through check in?

If you are replacing your boiler, one thing we did not , was get one with an inbuilt hot water tank  ,which in the summer or  when the heating  is not on,    the heat exchanger is cold,    so a lot of water is used before the water is  running hot

I think that that rule has been relaxed. Maybe they now have methods in place to mitigate?

wink Well !! The GOOD news is that the 'disc's ' did not require changing ,BUT only had about 100 miles before the pads eat into them !!  ??  Phew !! Still the vehicle has to go back in later (next month) as there's a rubber pipe letting by diesel fumes  ,,a return they say that MAY have a split in it Under warranty though !! sealed.

It might depend how far the boiler is from the shower, we are fortunate that ours is almost next door in the old airing cupboard. In the summer you don't need the water as hot but I don't reckon it takes much more than 30 seconds to start getting hot. At the end of the day you have to balance the extra water used with the cost of keeping a hot water tank at temperature? For our purposes we find the Combi on its own ideal. It will be interesting to see the year on year comparison in terms of gas used.

We were also in that position about 4 years ago.  Not only did we get a new combi-boiler, but we ended up having our radiators and piping replaced too!  I have to say, our new system is really good..... really happy with the combi-boiler.

Our current boiler is 32 years old! Gets serviced regularly, but system gets the odd new part every now and then. Currently requires a new thermostat. We shall discuss with our plumber when he comes. We will be balancing up life expectancy of a combi v standard set up. Our boiler and tank is in attic, so both are out of way, but easy access. We rarely have hot water on, usually for the odd bath, as we have instant shower, cold fill appliances. Need to do a bit of thinking.......🤷‍♂️🤔

Had a nice day out yesterday, three ladies off to Dukeries Nursery at Welbeck Abbey Estate, me on shrub search, little Sis and Mum buying in their seed potatoes (to grow in big pots) Nice place, hadn’t been for a while, good cafe as well. Lovely all day yesterday, no rain, but very cold. Could see snow on Derbyshire hills from home.

Good to hear your MIL is fine WN, and that you enjoyed ERH. It’s on our list on coming home day from our cottage. Hope everyone else gets away safely to various places.

Got some emails to catch up on!😉

We're glad we replaced our 40 yr old plus boiler, handed on from previous occupants! It must have been one of the original combi boilers but we had to wait longer and longer for the hot water to get through even over a short distance. The new one is much more efficient and British Gas have proved to be excellent, even phoning us when they detected a power blip...no more long waits for a contract plumber to appear etc. The boiler is connected "live" to British Gas, a very good system. smile

    Brue

We have been let down by independent plumbers before. I found it interesting that BG were actually a bit cheaper than a local plumbing firm, although I am not sure I should use the word cheap in the context of a new boiler!!! They did an excellent job with the installation of the new boiler. They don't always get a good press but we were happy with them. We have their Homecare package  and I am seriously considering adding things like plumbing and electrics to the contract as I hate hunting around for someone to do work in the house. We have the Hive system which is very good and I can even control it from my phone when we are away!

We only opted for the boiler connection but I can see the benefits of the other utility contracts becoming useful at some point.

Ttda, check opening days as we were told yesterday that they'll only be open at weekends from now until the end of March.

We have the full monty with BG as I need someone reliable in the event of something going wrong when we're away and MiL still at home. They're pretty good especially if they know that there's an elderly person in the house. They'll arrange an urgent appointment.

MiL feeling too stiff this morning after her tumble so wanted to rest up. Could have had something to do with the sleet falling outside!laughing So a lazy day. I'm not very good with lazy days. I'd usually go off to the kitchen but not much point in current circumstances.

Take care everyone as it's not very nice out there.

Wasn't too bad out there this morning  WN.  Went to Surgery toget a 'Bloods' appointment followed two weeks later by a Diabetes Clinic revue no  no   I meant review embarassed with Sister C.  All booked and a few  good giggles with a young Receptionist. Then across the carpark to attack the ATM then into Morrisons ( other supermarkets are available but not just there wink ). Got the list out when I got back to the motor and found I'd got all I'd listed { and a few other bits as well frown }. So I won't be starved should the world all go into LockDown  !!

Now I'm off to the workshop ( shed ) to mix a pail or three of bird food whilst the world is at least tolerably warm.

Enjoy your good selves, Take care, travel safely, TTFN

Arrived safe and sound here yesterday afternoon. Bit later thsn normal  getting into our apartment as they needed a bit extra cleaning after the sandstorms they've had here.

The weather is perfect, blue skies, slight breeze and nice and warm  (not hot) still gets me that just a few hours flight and you are in a different climate.

Doesn't seem as busy as previous years, its carnival time here this week with the big parade on Saturday night. Wonder how busy that will be.

JV, taking hand gel or any other liquid on board an aircraft is fine as long as its under 100mls its permitted. All such items must be in a see through plastic zip type bag going through security.

WN, good that MIL is ok.
