Freddy what a shock I offer my deepest sympathy sincere condolences to all.

If theres one thing this year has reinforced for me it's that life is precious and every minute should be treasured. Not always as easy as it is to type it!

Shocking news indeed Freddie, 60 is no age at all.  You will need to stay strong for your wife and your BIL, best wishes.

    Agreed Bakers2 !

To put ones true feelings down on paper / screen is hard without them seeming trite and banal no matter what we truly feel.

Thanks all. It’s going to take some time to get to grips with it. We had arranged for them to come over to us for a meal on the 27th Dec (he works shifts, so not easy to arrange), it’s going to seem strange. She had several health problems over the years, but this was a bolt out of the blue.

Just having a catch up on here. Very chilly day here but bright, dried bedding outside and it smelt lovely 😀. Pegged my towels out at dusk 😂😂 as forecast dry!

Went over to mums to find some more paperwork, brother doing it all thankfully, but I live closer now he's moved, and he'll call in when he brings his wife for day case op at local hospital Wednesday. Upside of that was we called into the nearest local pub, her village ones have been gone for years 😢 and had lunch so I avoided cooking tonight. Postponed dog walk until dusk to see 2nd advent calendar window, took a detour into the 'people busy' street it was on, but disappointed as there was no sign of it. Walked back past the church hall and delighted to see 1st window, well all 5 that face the road, were again lit up. Tomorrow's is in the road behind us so another change of scenery around dusk.

Plenty of policital activity about here from what I've seen. This is a 2 horse race area and I think the current incumbent is extra worried this time around. Unfortunately I was on the phone when they knocked and couldn't engage with them. OH however was returning from dog walk and had a discussion 😉

Out of interest and not wanting to to be nosey KjNelln why don't you have a vote? I was chatting with a south African recently and she can vote but is now a British citizen.

Virtually all that can be done regarding mum has been done now just waiting on the coroner - they said it would take up to 7 working days before we hear.

Hopefully I can have a day indoors tomorrow, I had hoped for it today, it's amazing how things can slide! As beautiful and wonderful our grand dog is and no matter how much paw wiping goes on she does leave a trail....... luckily she doesnt shed fur! Naturally, as appears to be normal for her stays, the weather turns WET WET WET even in this generally DRY area. Our cleaner has been poorly and she thoughtfully won't bring germs knowingly bring germs into our house, so shes missed 2 weeks and I've not had much time myself, still just agreed extra time this week but I still need to make a start!

    Not a British citizen B2.

When I was working for a Norwegian company it was better for me to stay Norwegian, and now I am retired and it does not matter, the cost of becoming a citizen has gone through the roof.

I have all the other rights, just not allowed to vote.  I cannot vote in Norway either as I have lived out of the country for too long.

Thank you KjellNN I had suspected that was the reason (I have never 'explored' voting rights in depth!). Sad that you're not allowed a say in governing in either country. But at least no one can blame you for who's voted in 😉😂😂 I'm not sure I know enough to answer the range of questions set to gain citizenship 😲 Not aware of the cost these days, or what it was when it was introduced.

On the latter note I have been advised, by someone in the system, to REALLY check details and spellings on the death certificate, or any certificate I presume, as once youve signed each correction now costs £90 😲😲😲. Recently introduced - they used to be free. A new income stream??

Whilst sorting out the forms for my brothers voting registration as ‘of no fixed abode’ I came across forms for ‘Anonymous Registration’ weird or what.

Oneputt I caught something on radio 4 yesterday relating to non voters a very large part of the population. I think I heard more than everyone who voted for the conservatives 😲 and why folk don't vote and why they don't register and anonymous voting, numbers were quoted for both registered and voting of these at the last election. Used for those who want to keep their whereabouts unknown because of vulnerability. Found the fact that they knew these folks had voted a little worrying. Quite an interesting listen it was in the morning whilst I was driving - might find it and re-listen.

I remember as a child the village electoral list hung in our village post office and we children would examine and giggle at adult names. Not so easy to access these days but still out there if you're inclined to want to know.

B2, as I received  indefinite leave to remain, as a spouse of a British citizen, back in 1970, the cost for me would I think  be around £1300, but for anyone starting from scratch these days it can be many thousands.

I am in the fortunate position that as long as I behave myself and pay my taxes, they cannot throw me out, it is much more difficult to be granted leave to remain these days.

I first came here as a student in 1963, I cannot remember having to pay anything to obtain my aliens card, just had to report to the police station every so often.  Then I returned to work in Norway in 1967, coming back here in 1970.

You are right about the tests, even OH said she would struggle to pass!

I had a look at the Norwegian one and it too is very difficult, I would need to go back to school!

Friends and family with EU connections have mostly gone for dual nationality due to Brexit. I suppose Norway's status is different for you KJ. I remember a Scottish solicitor asking us if we wanted to be "domiciled" in Scotland when making wills! Things can get complicated. wink

Bakers 2 and Freddy - just caught up with your sad news and would like to pass my condolences on your losses.

Bakers - your mum obviously had a good long life and passed peacefully  - it must be such a wrench for you to have lost her.

Freddy - I lost my mum to a sudden massive heart attack at the age of 60 some 30 years ago now. She was always active and healthy - out gardening one afternoon and gone in the evening. An awful shock at such a young age.

Will be thinking of you both.

Better like day today, dry and with sun smile

OH out being a  good Samaritan taking our 93 year old neighbour to the doctors surgery in the village, she can't make it there herself anymore.

After that he is doing an appraisal for the part time worker on the Development trust, she is the only paid worker, all the others like OH are volunteers. As Chairman he does her appraisal every year, this year though will be his last one as he has recently stood down from the post.

To be honest I shouldn't be sat here, I should be getting on with something but today I just can't be bothered, which bothers me as its not like me to do nothing.

What a terrible shock Freddy - please accept our condolences as well.  Ros lost a sister and two brothers in law - all in the space of a year, just over a year ago and it's left a big empty space in our lives.

Our sympathies come your way as well Freddy, so young. Very difficult for her partner and all the family.

Composing an email to head towards Jeep HQ. We have a minor issue with our new Jeep, a known design fault. However, the dealer we bought it from are giving us the runaround, a variety of spineless fob offs, hoping we will go away. We were tossed between Sales and Servicing yesterday, front of house lackeys protecting those who can make decisions, but aren’t up to carrying out a face to face conversation with clearly dissatisfied customers. So, ignore the monkeys, and head straight for the top honcho. Trailing a few negative reviews wherever we can of course..........😡 I like a challenge

I am torn between getting a room cleared out and sorted and finishing Christmas cards (have noticed this year that, bar two, all the older generation have gone. frown

Meanwhile OH is still involved in the long running plumbing saga at our daughters house (the plumber broke his wrist so is only just back on form and plumbers are like gold dust round here.) Daughter's partner is not exactly handy with pipe work and has only just pointed out a hidden leak this morning....yell

A nice day so should also be planting the last of the tulips, all three possible tasks aren't very appealing and TammyG I shouldn't be on here either! winklaughing

We had similar issues with a "well known Bailey caravan dealer" after an unsatisfactory service job 4 or 5 years ago.  Kept getting messed around by front of house staff.  So emailed the managing director at his home address - contacted within 24 hours and job done the following day. Always pays to go to the top! surprised

I too shouldnt be on here! Just having snack lunch in the conservatory in beautiful sun.

Messed about ALL MORNING in my dressing gown  - very rarely come down without being showered and 'attired for the day in hand, good job my mother couldn't see! I can hear her now (I am fully showered and dressed but only just!) I would always hear if she knocked on a door and 2as greeted by someone in a dressing gown, I'd have the time told me as well - she had no idea why they weren't dressed embarassed but they were 'judged'. Was caught by a friend calling with a card and plant 😂 nothing tidy etc  again rectified now, but lovely to have a quick chat and if friends cant accept me as I am tough..... several phone calls held up proceedings too, mum's friends of 70 plus years as well as one she pushed in her pram 😂. Fantastic that they all stayed very close.

Moulsey thanks for your kind words, yes it will leave a void but when my time comes I can think of far worse ways after a long life. I lost an uncle under similar circumstances to your mum, he was 48, but my memories of him were of playing huge family cricket at Frinton, and he'll ever be thus. Must be much harder if it's a parent. I cant recall reading about your dad recently, I do hope hes still doing well?

Tammygirl you and your OH contribute much to your community its lovely to read.

To all of us, including me, does it matter that you're not doing what you feel you should? NO IT DOESN'T, don't be hard on yourself life is for living and indulging yourself at least sometimes, it's a lesson we all need to heed and savour the moments. Preaching over for the day 😉

Takethedogalong all power to your elbow or whatever part of your anatomy you're using. Good suggestion from Oneputt but you're probably already on that Avenue too. Oh I don't miss work, how many times did one have to take the flack whilst others stayed unavailable??? 😤😤

Right time to address proper things, like covering tender plants, walking the dog and enjoying blue sky sun and chilly air.

Bakers - Yes, thanks for asking about Dad - he's doing well and annoying the hell out of all the carers in his home, some of whom are former students of mine. He's currently trying to teach one of the Portuguese lady carers some English idioms - not sure whether "you're driving me to drink" is going to be much use to her in the future though! laughing

Finally got off my bum and did some work laughinglaughing house now dusted, polished and hoovered smile bathroom and kitchen cleaned and tidied up, washing machine just finished first load. OH back from his doings. Just had a light lunch as not that hungry.

Now need to go into Perth to get some food shopping and to pick up the Toyota, they called late yesterday to say they had given it a good going over, taken it out on several test hills but can't find anything wrong with it undecided oh well I will bring it home and take it out on our hill in the village and see if it likes going up that in reverse. Its a bit worrying as we know it does it (judders) but like all things not when the experts are around.

While sorting out this morning I came across a box of Mum's paperwork that we had stuffed in a cupboard before going away, think we will wait until Thursday to sort it out as its supposed to be a horrible day weather wise.

I've got a few sewing jobs to do so while OH sorts the paperwork I can sit and sew.

TDA, I'm still waiting for a call back from my LPG supplier, I raised a complaint the other day after getting nowhere with the person on the phone. It's states they will contact me in 3 working days, they have 1 day left. I've already been on their Facebook page as I know they are not happy to have negative comments. If nothing happens in the time stated I will be back on. Hope you get a satisfactory result.

TammyG,  are you Sure it's a Toyota  ??

The great "judderers in reverse" were the then infamous Fiat Ducatos  wink.

Went up to see Elderly Sister this morning, after I'd joined a Q at the surgery where three of us stood in line waving our, newly filled, sample bottles, like three pees in a pod embarassed

Things medical apart, Sis was busy knitting, knitting, knitting. Apparently her newly welped grand daughter had requested some nice knitted baby hats in Red and Amber And Green.  After a few technical questions it transpired that the guilty maternity unit has a habit of popping a green hat on fit & well babes, when not so well ones get the amber. Poorly little ones are given red ones, so anybody entering their unit can see at a glance which little ones are well, improving or rather poorly.

Nobody in this part of the world has come across this seemingly sensible idea before, so Sis has been given about 4 balls/bundles of the three colours and told " go thee and do your duty "  Despite her being in the middle of knitting away  at Christmas sweaters for half the family already  !!

Harwell, it'll stop her catching buses and wandering round Crewe Market when she's not being supervised  wink
