Brian, quick update 're Loch Garten.
There has been lots of activity around the next over the last couple of days, with Axel, AX6, and a couple of females, one new, BTO ringed, one and an unringed one, but who appears to be "Mistle", who was with him for a short while last year. It now looks as if they have paired up again and there may be a resident pair this year, which is great news.

Just to make Brian jealous. Mistle, the new female on the Loch Garten nest. It looks as if she has paired up with Axel again, after a brief courtship last year, and they are making a go of it.

An update for CY.
Yesterday the female on Nest 2 at Poole Harbour, CJ7, laid what is believed to be the first fertilised Osprey egg to be laid in the South of England for 200 yrs.

} that I should get out and use it as was intended !Will have to 'book' my 6-monthly blood test soon, then, when the results come in & Nursey delivers her tirade on well-being, self control and other similar things mayhap I will get moving again and might, just might, tell YOU about Osprey outrages, bad bird behaviour and suchlike for a change. Another reintroduction using translocation methods same technique as that used for the white tailed eagles not too far away. Let’s hope it works first time, I’m sure it will eventually.

Seen them on their migration around the Humber Bridge/Barton Broads area. Always thought this might be a good place to attempt a reintroduction. Alkborough Flats Reserve nearby could also be a possible site, maybe!

I should have known my fellow 'forumers' would have knowledge and interest in these wonderful creatures! Unbeknown to me at the time of booking, I have taken a cottage for a week in June, with Loch Garten as my back yard. It's an area I didn't manage to get to in my caravanning days so am really looking forward to my trip, especially if I have the opportunity of watching these birds of prey - novice that I am. In the meantime, the livecam will do.

Things are a bit mixed at Loch Garten, Extugger. Although there is a pair at the nest the male, Axel, is not delivering fish frequently enough to the female, Mistle, and the thought is that he may also have another partner at a second nest. If that's the case it might depend on which female lays first and received his undivided attention, as he would not be able to keep both of the fed during incubation. There is good news from other monitored sites, primarily at Llyn Brenig, where following the destruction of the nest last year by vandals, the same pair, LM6 and LJ2, have returned and she has laid 3 eggs. Hopefully they will all hatch and fledge successfully.
There are 16 other nest sites with at least 3 eggs in each, and at Keilder 1A the pair have produced 4 eggs. Good luck to them all.

There is a report of 3 eggs having been laid by 18th April, and also 3 more at the Esthwaite nest by the 20th. From the RSPB website:-

Thanks Nellie, I know that the ospreys moved to a different nest site a few years back which was not that visible from the Dodd Wood viewing point. Went past the Keswick A66 circle today where they used to advertise the direction to the viewing point but no road signs at all visible. That may be a good thing mind!

"the nest is not the one you can see from the view point above the Water, but on private land, and that's why there isn't much info coming through. "

Great news from Loch Garten.
The resident female, nominally named Mistle, today at 18:47 laid the first egg to have been laid at LG's monitored and videod nest since 2018. Many fingers now crossed for the pair to rear at least one health chick. Volunteers and watchers are all on text hooks as they think that this is the first year that either of the pair have matured into prospective parents, so this is a learning curve for both of them.

Let's just hope that they stay together and that Axel both supplies her with fish, which he has not been that good at so far, and that he takes his turn at incubating the egg(s).

Micky, there are 16 eggs, at the last count, in the 6 nests that are easily seen at Keilder.
The Loch Garten pair seem to be making a go of it, as they have 2 eggs and are both sharing recirculation of them. Axel is also supplying fish on a much more regular basis now. Fingers crossed that they are able to do the right things when their eggs hatch and raised at least one chick.
Two of the 3 eggs laid at Manton Bay, Rutland have hatched, and the third is due to hatch about the 13th.
There is no other news of eggs hatching, as far as I can see, but plenty out there now.

Had a trip to Meathop Moss, and nearby Foulshaw Moss, today, both CWT reserves. And both now with web cameras set up.
Ospreys seen at both sites, on eggs, so nowhere near as active as they will be when the young have hatched.
Had a chat with the warden at Foulshaw, he told us that ospreys are nesting at Ireland Moss, and are showing really well. Might just take a look, we’re here for another couple of days. 🙂0 -
Don't know if any of you reading these posts are on Facebook, but there is some fantastic videos of the nest at Manton Bay on the Rutland Opsprey Project FB page which are well worth viewing. There are two hatched chicks and great shots of the hatching and then of Maya feeding them.

Had a look at Ireland moss this afternoon, on our way back from Hodbarrow Reserve.
Following the directions given by the warden yesterday, the nest site was easy to find, and the views were good.
Don’t know how many osprey sites there must be in Cumbria this year, but certainly looking good for the birds.
If anyone wants directions to the Ireland moss site, I’ll post them on here.

There has been some concern at Manton Bay about Maya and one of the chicks but all seems well again, and a third chick hatched out yesterday. At Loch Garten the third egg has now been laid.

Driving west on the A590, turn right, just after the Lakeside and Haverthwaite railway station, signposted Bouth.
Continue towards Bouth, before the river and the caravan site sign, look out for a couple of (muddy) lay-bys, the 2nd one is probably the best.
Park in either and walk back towards the main road, just a few yards.
There are 2 gateways.
The 1st gateway gives views of a nesting platform, but it wasn’t in use.
The 2nd gateway (paint on ground near grids), gives good views of an occupied nesting platform.
This isn’t a reserve of any sort, the landowner has put the platforms up to attract the ospreys, and has positioned them near the gateways to give people a good chance of seeing the birds.Hope this makes sense!

Lots of Osprey nests now have at least 3 eggs being incubated but the only chicks are still those at Manton Bay, however there could well be a hatching tomorrow in next 1A at Keilder, which also contains 4 eggs.

Lots of chicks hatching out now following on from Manton Bay; LotL, Kielder nest 1A, Foulshaw, Clwyedog. No sign yet from LG, but it is early days there, but plenty of fish being delivered and both taking turns at incubating.
