Thank you, Nellie, for the info on Loch Garten chicks being ringed, so now I just have to hope that they remembered to clean the camera lens at the same time !!

There are many nests now where the chicks have been ringed, so it will be good to see in years to come if and when any return to their natal nest area.
Quite a number of the chicks have fledged in the past week, just now waiting for the pair at Loch Garten to take to the wing.

Lots of the monitored nests now have chicks that have fledged, including those at the Poole Harbour nest, now waiting for the two at both Llyn Brenig, and Loch Garten, and one of the pair at Loch Arkaig. Unfortunately it would appear that the youngest chick at one of the Kielder nests, Kielder1A, has disappeared after it's fledgling flight, as so has his father, leaving the female adult to catch and feed her 3 other chicks by herself.

I missed this event, but the nest at Balgavie Loch collapsed on 20th July and the single chick was deposited on the ground but survived. Following the efforts of the local Raptor group and site wardens a platform was erected and the chick placed there. By all recent reports the family are back together and doing well. Such sad news indeed, have been so busy over the last week that I missed this post.
Some good news now. Both chicks, or should I say young ospreys, at Loch Garten fledged today, the first there for 6 years.
Virtually all of the surviving chicks at the monitored nests have now fledged, and those at Manton Bay will be soon be heading off on their migration. The eldest is 99 days old today and last year the first left at 106 days old.
Now some sad news, White YA, the male at Nest 1A at Kielder, and the youngest of the pair's chicks have not been seen for many days now. This was posted on the 30th July
"It’s now over 2 weeks since YA was last seen. And 11 days since 440/Farne left the nest. There is no sign of either osprey. Mrs YA is provisioning the remaining three youngsters well."

More good news, which I have just read on another website.
"The establishment of the first breeding pair of ospreys in Yorkshire for hundreds of years “is nothing short of a miracle”, according to a conservationist.The young adult pair, who have made their home on the Bolton Castle estate in Wensleydale, have produced two chicks – a male and a female.The two chicks hatched in mid-June and have now been ringed.
The mother of the new chicks is known as Blue KS1 and hatched at Glaslyn in Wales in 2018, but her mate is unringed. KS1’s mother is known as Mrs G and has been returning to Wales since 2004. Her father, known as Aran, has been with Mrs G since 2012. It is believed that this is the first of Aran’s offspring to breed."

Update:- The total number of successful fledges in the Kielder Raptor Study Area is 14 of 15 ospreys reaching fledging age from six of eight occupied nests.
Not such good news from Loch Garten as 1C1, the female juvenile, does not seem to be progressing well, not feeding or being fed fully and has not flown since 4th Aug when she fledged.

Even worse news from both Loch Garten and Poole Harbour. At LG juvenile 1C1 died on the nest this afternoon and the RSPB team will remove the bird for an autopsy to determine cause of death tomorrow. At Poole Harbour juvenile 5H2 was attacked by a young Goshawk 2 days ago, and despite efforts by the vets there she didn't survive, dying through the night, last night.

There has been a lot of movement in the last few days with many of the Ospreys, both parents and their fledglings starting their Autumn migration. At Loch Garten there has been no sight of the female parent for nearly a week now, the male has been an infrequent visitor to the nest too and the surviving fledgling 1C2 has not been seen for over a day.. He is still rather young, by all accounts, to be heading south so perhaps he is still around, learning to fish but no longer visiting the nest. An intruder, KL5, has been on the nest quite frequently and may be sizing it up for next year.
The youngest of the chicks from the Threaves nest, Blue O42, has been spotted on the Pym Estuary.
Good luck to all those birds heading south for the winter and fingers crossed for their return next Spring.

Lots of interesting posts about the intruders the RSPB's Kielder web site but this one is perhaps the most interesting one, considering that Ospreys tend to return to their natal area to find mates and breed.
"We posted earlier this year that 39, born Keilder 2011, was breeding at a nest in the Borders, with 3 chicks. His partner is 3AF, from Rutland Osprey Project. This seems to be the first record of English hatched ospreys breeding in Scotland. WOW"

Saw a bird of prey going over this afternoon fairly high up and no time to get bins so a quick walk part the way down our field and realised by the outline and colouring it was a Osprey going south and OH could not even see it even with long distance glasses on.

The majority of Ospreys over here seem to agree with you, CY, as many nests are now empty with their previous occupants away to warmer climes for the winter months.😁

Have just read that the first of the juvenile Ospreys to leave Kielder this year, Nest 1A’s 439/Frankham was seen on the morning of the 26th in Spain, on the Llobregat Delta at Barcelona. He was last seen at Kielder on the 9 th August.

Brian, there has been no sightings of Ospreys on the Loch Garten nest since 22nd Aug, and the last there was a regular intruder, KL5, who has been sussing out the nest on quite a few occasions. Hopefully Axel and Asha will return next Spring, Asha being last seen on 14th, Axel on the 21st, very briefly, and their youngster 1C2 on the 18th.

The sole youngster from Nest 4 in Keilder, 442/Featherstone, was last seen at the nest on Sunday, but was photographed at Baston & Langtoft Pits, Lincolnshire yesterday.
One of the 2019 Nest 3 Keilder Ospreys, 207/Cawfields, was sighted at Anthorn in Cumbria on 16th August, having last been seen in Senegal in November 2019.

Surprise, surprise!! Axel was filmed in the Loch Garten nest today, the first time since 22 Aug, so the thought is that perhaps he has been feeding 1C2 at another site, possibly the nest he used for part of last year, and the Juvenile has now built up sufficient supplies to make a successful migration.
