Rewilding at its best, well done all involved another great success story, let's hope for even more in the future..
Lots of other small but significant steps forward across the UK now taking place, from little acorns great oaks grow!😋

Ownership of land is a contentious issue, it's a man made concept of little if any meaning to Nature. Good land owners recognise this, the bad deliberately upset the balance, are destructive and damaging. Their own gain is the most important thing in their eyes.

I'm not sure where to post this - but if you're quick you can see a friend of ours on BBC Breakfast this morning.
James Rebanks (author of The Shepherd's Life), talking about his approach to farming and the environment (and his new book "English Pastoral".)
Click the link, and if it doesn't go to the right place it's at about 2hr 48 min.

Edit - it seems you have to whizz along to the correct spot (or watch the whole 3 hours!)

IT may be ugly but, in my opinion, needs help to reinstate its rightful place as we have, in the past, contributed to its demise.

A pair of beavers have been released in an enclosure on the Lowther Estate for a 5 yr scientific trial.

Not talking about them, whoever they may be. Nature does not recognise ownership of land, it is a meaningless concept as far as the creatures we share our habitats with are 'concerned'.
As climate changes and habitats with it, new species will become the naturalised natives just as some of our once common species are being driven further north by the same process. Creatures without our boundaries, it's 'our' responsibility to maintain the balance, be reactive to change and correct the damage we've caused as best we can.

If I understood what you meant by that statement I might be able to give a reasoned response.

None of the hunting, shooting & fishing fraternity is remotely interested in helping the lives of animals get better they are mainly interested in bringing their lives to an end-killing them🤷🏻♂️☹️

Nellie- see my previous posts. There were of course newspaper articles at the same time, who may have given a better response. Why did these rich South England people not rewild the New Forest? Their own doorstep. just to see how it works. NIMBY

Fisherman. A person you referred to previously (I'm not naming him on here) bought a farm not far from us and the locals complained when the deer escaped. I don't classify these type of "farm" enterprises as re-wilding, there maybe a few individuals involved who don't have any experience but have a lot of spare cash. We are seeing land locally being bought up by certain individuals, there's not a lot to be done until they become truly interested in ecology.
As for the New Forest, it's had 800 years of land management! LINK

Brue the man lied about Wild Boars. He is on the DEFRA board. thanks to political monies spent. Those, with their other monied friends are the sort of people. with no idea what it means who are driving this agenda. They try to buy influence and steam roller the locals. Of course a long way from where they live. As you say 800 years of management makes the New Forest the ideal spot for their experiment and the release of top end carnivores.

No I didn't say the NF was the ideal spot, I presume your comment was tongue in cheek. The people buying up land near us are a small group, they're into hotels, farming, landscaping etc I think you'll find their credentials are not about re-wilding but a current passing trend. Lets hope it moves on to more realistic ideas.

But then other reports admit that some of the Lions and Tigers although exagerated somewhat (as is most reports to make a case in many areas)by both the sactuaries were inspected by vets and all the reported injuries were present in most of those that have been rehomed in both the Spanish and I.O.W rehome centres

I'm surprised! This man is one of the most principled and possibly honest individuals in this field in my opinion. I don't always totally agree with his ideas but much I do. That rabid label is just totally outrageous and incorrect on all levels. Clearly some are really 'frightened' by his honesty!

If it is CP I struggle with him being anything but a great Human being, Dog lover, nature lover & all round environment champion. . .What’s not to like👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Agreed. I've been enjoying the low key winter watch programmes. Hardly the stuff for such harsh personal descriptions whilst allowing for ideas that not everyone supports but can gain some insights.
Last night I watched the programme about Helvellyn and the Lakes and the work going into protecting the habitat. Not so much about rewilding but trying to preserve what we've got.
