Coronavirus: Stay or go

I think driving to your local woods is classified as unnecessary travel, a walk round the local streets or park is the one to go for and the government advises using your garden as much as possible if you have one. There is a whole lot of advice out there on >Gov.uk < regarding animal care, green space use etc but the main advice is stay local, don't travel.

As I have said I don't have an issue with legislation being used to enforce social distancing and restricting activities in order to try and get COVID-19 under control, no sensible person would. My concerned is the longer term ramifications if the legislation is not rescinded in the appropriate time. Like you I have a vested interest, as we all do, in getting this issue under control and dealt with. What I don't want is for this legislation to stay on the statute for a day longer than is necessary. Yesterday I probably broke the law! I have been having a problem with my car not starting so yesterday I took it for a short run to test it. Many would think that an unnecessary journey but from my point of view if I need the car in an emergency its not going to be much use to me if I have a flat battery.

Just read that a 90 year old lady in Belgium said don’t place me on a ventilator I’ve had a good life, use them on the young. She died 2 days later. Perhaps all the selfish people who don’t want to follow the advice etc., should think on and pay homage to this brave lady. Full respect to you madam for your sacrifice and RIP

Agree brue, we are off into Park. It isn’t about us and what we want, it’s about the collective good. 🐾🐾🐾🐾

Just as an aside my elderly neighbours are totally befuddled about their shopping arrangements etc. Myself and others have been trying to get things for them but they can't remember who they've asked and aren't telling each other about what the other one has asked for either. One of them, nearly ninety has been going to the village shop and standing next to the bakery delivery man as he arrives (I did say to her later, you must move away not get close) this was to get to the bread as it first came in! All we need is for the virus to appear in the village on a bread delivery van!
I've spent quite a bit of time this morning thinking of a solution, I think I've got it now if their family (who live a long way from here) will do the shop order and payment. volunteers will deliver. Wish I'd thought about it earlier!

Sorry, Moulesy,
Missed your reply whilst engaged on domestic duties!
Elsewhere, there are new figures out showing that Brits purchased some £160 million extra booze during the first 3 weeks of March, an increase of almost 25%! This follows on from yesterday's report that from the Trade Body for Cardboard Recycling that said food supplies and medicines were at risk because the Councils' cessation of cardboard and paper collections was causing a major supply chain problem for the 'Fibre Supply'.
So, it's selfish travelers v. inconsiderate boozers ... Or, perhaps, less controversially, the interconnected nature of our daily living activities is such that somewhere down the line, we are all guilty of adding to the problem. 'Yer pays yer money and yer takes yer choice of transgression'. Mine's hoarding materials to make my soapboxes ....
On a more serious, but more optimistic note, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine is reporting that the social isolation rules appear to be having positive results. Early indications are that an infected person is only likely to infect 0.62 {which bit?] of a person, compared to 2.62 other people before the restrictions began.
'Too early to relax' message but encouraging news!

Great solution Brue. We need to come up with positive ways to help others and stop dwelling on the stuff we have no control over. Mrs One had a call from her church this morning asking if all was OK and did we need any help. They also ask if we thought any of our immediate neighbours needed any assistance. Thought that was really nice

IMHO it will be not be soon that countries will open their borders for any but essential travellers, they have already seen a spike with infections in China , and Japan where their nationals? who fled to Europe and the US when it first started, are now returning with the virus after being infected while away,so the Government of any country is going to be very apprehensive of anyone especially Tourists of bringing it back in

this would suggest the rate of infections is slowing and levelling with the last 6 days (April 1st not on this graph) being below the peak of 26th.
as i said elsewhere, the death rate there is still truly awful but this will always be behind the infection curve...

I hoped that was the case, its just that some folk do have a bad image of the military at times, yet their role is to protect this country.
If the military are needed to be out on the streets (I hope not) they would more than likely be attached to a police presence rather than be just soldiers on patrol, which is the last thing anyone wants to see on our streets.

I was rather taken aback yesterday when I saw our local hairdresser coming out of my 93 year old neighbours house. The hair salon is closed (as it should be) yet she is going around folks houses doing hair.
There is one part of me says "that's nice of her to look after the elderly" while the other part of me says STAY AT HOME.
I can't help but think this is a really bad idea, her OH is a farmer so one would assume he is in contact with other folk at some stage of his work. Surely she should not be doing what she is doing.

I took our car on a longer route than I normally would when I did my medicine/fresh food run for Mum, for this reason. Did you see my post somewhere else about Smart Chargers? They trickle charge your car battery keeping it healthy. Battery doesn’t have to come out of car, they turn off automatically when a certain charge level is reached. Used as instructed, perfectly safe for all vehicles. Obviously no good if your vehicle is parked on street, but perfect for in garage or on drive. Need to check daily, and unplug completely if leaving house for a longer length of time, but we often do ours overnight. C-Tek is a well known brand.
Above is really cheap, but lots of different models, other makes. First Aid kit for cars.

No she isn’t TG, very unsafe. If her business is legitimate (ie registered and pays tax) she should be eligible for 80% grant. Won’t be payable until June, but safer than doing what she is doing.

In your 2 examples, TDA, you are unlikely to be stopped for the local park trip. As you say, 'just about morally acceptable'.
In your second example, the Police do not have the power under the legislation to just stop you under a variation of the 'Sus Law' and the updated guidance to Police recognises this. You would probably be needing to commit a traffic offence to warrant any attention.
But, if a Police Officer sees you on a 'Peak District Jolly' [s]he would be likely to 'Engage, Explain and Encourage' you to return to nearer home for exercise, and, given your own views, it seems doubtful that the Officer would have any need to get into the 'Enforce' option.
As for the 'unnecessary travel'. it remains guidance, albeit guidance that just about everyone on this Forum will be following, as distinct from law. That is, I believe, the thrust of today's annpouncement; basically the law is not going to try to make someone on the 'Peak District Jolly' a criminal, but the first 3 E's will help to point out that that person is a selfish 42 carat plonker, as Del Boy might put it!

Apologies for labouring the point, TDA. TG's post is an example of a breach of the Social Distancing Regs, and the Police Officer could issue and Enforcement Notice [as well as describing the hairdresser as a 42 carat plonker ...]

That's a clear breach, TG. We're told not to mix with people who don’t share the same house as us.
She is putting everyone she meets at risk as well as herself.

I won’t be doing either. I have a local park, walks direct from home, so more than happy to stay local. There’s less risk of an RTA, or even a minor accident in park, which means less risk of requiring other people to come and rescue me. That’s how my common sense gene works.
