Motorhomes and the white peg rule

Wow who would have thought that a little white peg could cause so much controversy
well I can honestly say that in the 22yrs that we have been members of the C& MC we have never had a problem, never been told to move or re-position and never come across a grumpy warden.I truly don’t know what all the fuss is about ,Surely in most cases it’s just common sense and thought for your neighbors on site.Well I’m just gonna finish washing the Motorhome in preparation for leaving On Wednesday for Abbey Wood for a week and then onto Moreton in Marsh.I will ring the sites ahead to check the white pegs are correctly positioned
seriously guys come on ,enjoy your Sunday

I guess you can stop fretting about pegs and spacing on club sites now you’re no longer a member, DD. 👍🏻

"None of us that use Club sites want to be crammed in like sardines, its nice to have a bit of space and privacy. "
bit of a sweeping generalisation, David.
horses for courses, and different needs at different times.
i use club sites, several times a year (along with other providers and site types) but I am more than happy to be parked of for the night, or two on 'awful looking van parks' like the excellent facility at Canterbury.
it depends on many factors, closeness of stopping options, length of stop etc.
for example, we have stayed in Carcassonne 3 times.
the first time, we had four or five days there and stayed at the nearby campsite.
both the other two times were one or two night stop overs and we stayed on the adjacent aire.
they both served the purpose at the time.
on our long trips South, where we won't be stopping long to smell the flowers, we use similar facilities.
do I feel cramped, 2nd class, in danger....of course not.
I feel appreciative to be able to use such a well sited facility, as I'm sure the van owners in the Canterbury picture did.
its obvious, these facilities aren't for everyone, but for those who do make use of them they are an extremely convenient resource.
and surely it matters not if some or all are overnighting, it's an overnight facility so the authority must have considered what guidelines to insist on for those that do sleep there?
Knock it if you like but Good on Canterbury, I say.

I am sure that they did consider the consequences to the council if they sold 'pitches' for overnight camping. Which is why they instead sell overnight parking. The Canterbury City Council (Off-Street Parking Places) Order 2016 whilst detailing places where motor caravans might park overnight specifically prohibits sleeping in any vehicle overnight on any of their car parks.

Alan, i accept what you say, but, in practice, there are not repeated 'infringements' for those overnighting (sleeping) on this facility..
my quick trawl of 'why not' is that (it appears) the council has decided simply not to enforce the TRO regarding sleeping...other sites were named.
(the acceptance of) this sort of facility is (apparently) built from the 'bottom up' where firstly overnight parking is 'allowed', followed (perhaps) by the inclusion of further equipment like fresh water, grey waste disposal and chemical toilet facilities..
councils don't like the word 'aire' used to describe this sort of facility as
"QUOTE] (from a (different) council that provides (similar) facilities): "That is why through the whole process I have avoided calling the facility we provide an ‘aire’ (though unfortunately the word has snuck in on publicity/press releases). I only ever mention it as ‘overnight motorhome parking’ – strictly speaking we do not allow sleeping, just letting motorhomes park overnight. That allows me to be able to defend the car park against a change of use though if other facilities were provided I would lose that defence."[/QUOTE]
I have found no reported 'transgressions' from the hundreds (thousands) of MH owners who have slept there....
however, it matters not...if it proves to be where we want to be, I'm prepared to run the gauntlet of prosecution and will take the risk of anything else....
its a tough world out there

Deleted User - (Maybe I should start a thread on 'good Aires'?)
That would get a good bit of discussion I'll warrant.
'The Good, the Bad and the Middling' has a ring to it .....

Why ? Appledore, Bideford, Holsworthy, Exmouth, Westward Ho, Torrington. and Clovelly are some of the parking areas in Devon where overnights for motorhomes are allowed. Are they not Aires?

I don't know, et, are they "aires" or just car parks? But the point is that there surely aren't enough in the UK to warrant their own thread are there? I mean, wasn't that the reason for the "interesting petition" and the repeated demands for the club to provide them?

But General Chat is for off topic discussions, ie not for hobby related subjects.

No, they don't have pegs, they don't have different colour pegs, they don't bang on endlessly about peg violation issues, measuring gaps, or rule breaking morons.
They have a stay here if you want to approach, it is up to the individual to decide if what they offer suits. They are chilled out and their rules, if they have any, comfortably fit on the back of a beermat.
This why so many brits go there to experience the relaxed, non regimented, rule free environment. They love it, apparently it is what caravanning is about.
