Time to roll back to previous forum?

"........ Having said that, they are doing the right thing by listening to comments made on CT and making decisions based upon their wider experience of the system and deciding the way forward."
I started a thread in October 2013 asking what improvements people would like to see in the CT forum. I can find my original post, but not the entire discussion. I put forward 7 suggestions, but over a few days other people's suggestions soon took the number to over 20.
A club staff member (I can't remember who) even commented that the suggestions were very useful and would be passed on to the development team...... where from the action that followed I can only assume that they were binned,

...and you are surprised?

That comment would seem to subscribe to the idea that an iPhone with Safari is an 'uncommon' one then.
I could accept that some geek using an obscure incarnation of Linux with an equally obscure browser having problems, but the main software platforms not being properly supported is indicative of the builders of this website operating outside their comfort zone or level of competence.

Not everyone has access to the latest super duper technological innovations. Some of us don't even know the delights of fast broadband or 4G, or even 3G . We are on 2G in our area. We do have the right browsers and Google Chrome is proving to be successful at the moment.

CY I wasn't suggesting that an iPhone on safari is uncommon. My suggestion was that more testing with various browsers is needed - the commonly used ones first.
On my laptop using Windows 10 and chrome the site zips along, the colours are ok and I'd say tweaks here and there were all that was needed
If I based my assessment on my iPhone experience I'd say it needs a rebuild.
So testing on various platforms is needed to identify where changes need to be made and I've been trying to identify issues with different browsers in my posts.

steve, i see nothing different in what you describe as the site spellchecker and what the ipad offes in every other application it supports.....imessage, email, etc....its always corrected spelling (offered alternatives) and inserted apostrophes, well it does on this old ipad2
i certainly dont see this as a CT function...

Apologies Jayess, it was the phrasing. We are in agreement that it should have been thoroughly tested on the major platforms before roll-out.

I don't know who's function it is BB but that aspect never worked properly on the old site. It did on other sites but not on CT. Some of the suggestions were truely staggering. That's on an iPad 3. Although I am doing this as a test on my iphone. Site seems to work well and easy to read, although not sure I like the sideways scrolling, although it is very fluid. Perhaps just a case of getting used to.
However, it is different matter on a Sony Experia with an old Android OS. On that it is barely usable. So I can understand those with older Android devices saying they are experiencing problems. Although again, everything was easily readable.

I am writing this is Word and about to use it in a post to try and answer DD’s question. Um, it seems to work?

One more annoyance is the "Like" button that when used pitches me back to the start of the thread for some perverse reason.
I feel that the best way forward is to revert to the old forum whilst the decision regarding which of the commercial software forum packages is to be adopted.
With all due respect to the people that have prepared this new website I do feel that forum software design is best left to others.

I am slowly { as befits a dinosaur !! } getting to grips with this new version
BUT I must admit the loss of the "Recently Used" panel to the
right of the page is sad, slows me right down in my short visits.
Also I would still like the page numbers to appear at the top as well as the bottom of a page.
Grumbles pretty well finished, thank you !

P.S. the "you can upload up to 5 photos" bit is really
offensive, 'cos I can't

DM, I've just liked your post without it taking me back, it did take me to the beginning of the page your post was on. I scrolled down to find the reply box. No problems

couldn't agree more with the general consensus - a shambles.
My last 30 years were in IT - and NONE of the projects I was involved with were this bad!! (in positions from analyst to programmer to PM...)
The whole site crashed whilst I was trying to purchase from the shop - so I went elsewhere. Yes IT dept - your incompetence cost the club profits from that too....
Test, test and test again - a well-used mantra but oh so true. They should have also done regression testing to revert if necessary - but I don't have any confidence that this will have happened.
I think we're stuck with this one!! Now where's that application form to join a well-known other caravanning club?

I haven't posted a lot on this new forum (but there again I never did on the old one).
As far as I can tell it works OK for me.
I can read posts. I can like posts. I can reply easily. I can quote and reply. I can add photos and insert thumbnail links to external videos.
All of that I've done easily on a Windows 7 Desktop, and on an IPad.
is it really all that bad ?

Goldie, I'm also using windows 7 with Firefox and an Android table and have not had a problem doing the things you say. Its the following of threads and new posts that is a major problem. The current system of showing these doesn't work and it is certainly not an improvement on the old system.

It shouldn't matter a jot what computer/tablet/phone and software you use the problem is this version is just not fit for purpose and it is up to CC Ltd to solve the problems. It shouldn't be up to us to tell them what is wrong with their system

while we're on the same topic of this cr4p masquerading as a forum ... can we again get shut of the drop down bar across the page that drops down over the whole page especially the 'over seas holiday'. We had it ages back when it dropped down as a black box .... the 'IT' dept kind of fixed it, in that it wasn't as bad as it was before, but since the 'new improved forum' it seems to be back to square one.
And why do we down have sections that we scroll left to right on a phone...... it took me a few goes to find that.. The IT dept should hold their collective hands in the air & admit that what they have presented as a working forum is sh1te!!!
As above somewhere ..... you get to a thread you want to comment on, you log in and all of a sudden you're on your profile page .... miles away from where you were & wanted to be
This is on top of the green green everywhere .....

Its strange how some people seem to be getting on fine with the new forum and yet others claim it's a load of rubbish. Are those of us that are managing too accepting or are we just realistic and accept that whilst it's working it does need more work which we accept will need a bit more time whereas others expect a completely perfect forum from day one. My experience of other forums when they have major upgrades is that everything does not always go according to plan. Motorhome Facts had a big upgrade some time ago and that went far from smoothly if memory serves.

Hi all,
I have been in Holland for a while in my MH and have just noticed this change. My observations are:
This major upgrade would/should have been a project run by CC business managers using formal Project Management tools. Whatever the outcome, the IT Dept should not be getting the brunt of the user complaints on this forum.
I agree with BBs posts.
Why is 25% of the pages left blank and wasted, just so The Club can advertise Red Pennant and other products, in our face. Very bad use of valuable space and therfore poor design.
I was in IT for 30 years before retiring recently and involved with lots of web development and it is clear to me that The Club needs to go back to the drawing board, take some external professional advice and stop trying to do things like this on the cheap.
If it is about money, what about sponsorship?

I tend to agree with David. I have only looked at the forum briefly, but there do seem to be some improvements. Maybe not all is perfect, but what is? Give them time. Afterall it's a forum so not exactly life or death if they get it wrong. It is the season of goodwill to all, Even IT workers. Happy Christmas
Bob
PS. Come on IT. Please put a Westmorland option. Saying people are from Cumberland is like saying you are from Lancashire to a Yorkshireman.

Yes there are things that need improving or adding. Like a list of last posts in the white space to the right. However, if it is not up to the users to tell them what needs improving, then who is it up to. All software is dependant on user feedback as an aid to improvement.

Yes, agree with the profile thing. We do not live in Lanarkshire, but do have a Glasgow postcode, so are only allowed by the software to be in Lanarkshire.
Nothing against Lanarkshire, but we are a long way away from it, being almost up on Loch Lomond.
As it will not accept what I say, I have tried to delete showing it, but even that did not succeed !
Lots of small but significant glitches it seems.
Several of which are very annoying. Hopefully it will improve with time.

Totally agree with BB in his original post.
Even the most ardent CC supporter can only really say that the new forum is no worse than the old one.......the one that was (justly) heavily criticised. Is that the best they could aim for?
A more realistic assessment is that it's worse in so many ways.
Go back to the old one and try again with the new one when you've got it right........about 2 or 3 years, based on past performance?
