It was raining, so I had a look at other forums, and there are certainly some headless chickens running around. "Change is coming, what on Earth shall we do?"

Once Covid is is over foreign travel will start up again. Holidays  in Spain will be just as easy as holidays in New Zealand. You buy the ticket, you pay for the medical insurance, and you stick within the time limits in force.

The world will still be open for those who want to go and taste it.

Exactly and that’s why I said things could well change. It seems to hinge on covid now.

Could be a bit of an "own goal" for Britanny Ferries, being French owned.

I think they do quite well with freight which is a growing part of their business. The new Galicia ferry has increased freight capacity to Spain further and direct services between Rosslare & Bilbao remove the need to use the UK as a land bridge.

Tend to agree EuroT, however, the "to do list" for doing some of these things seems to grow and involve shelling out more money, e.g.

possible visas for stays over 90 days, International driving permits x 2 possibly depending on countries you visit, comprehensive travel insurance, no EHIC, lots of hoops to jump thru if you want to take your pet, green card for car insurance, possible long delays at channels ports, dependant upon checks in place .....

will probably take the plunge this year as we have 2 x BF tickets carried over from earlier this year, but have to say we spent 1 month away this year in September on a site in Devon, which was glorious, booked same again for this year, and for us it is just a case of hitching up driving for 4 hours, legs down etc and chill. So will we venture abroad in the coming years, Ummmmm!!!

You could add Croatia, Romania or Bulgaria into the mix (ditto Cyprus) and get 90 days stay without using your 90/180 day EU allowance. Croatia is a great destination but maybe Romania & Bulgaria won’t be everybody’s cup of tea? However, could be pleasantly surprised if stories from others are accurate. Whatever, I think Croatia will have to be in my extended touring mix next year.

Should have added travel insurance to my "to do list", some analysts are saying that medical insurance for travel in Europe with the demise of the EHIC will be eye watering amounts, especially if you have pre-exisiting conditions yell, it has been suggested that if Spain can get a reciprocal agreement from the UK then they might just accept the EHIC undecided, i wonder if my 2 metal/plastic knees, and 2 metal / plastic thumb joints count as pre-exisiting undecided

I understand that they’re very keen to joint Schengen, but the migration crisis of a few years back saw loads of illegal immigrants enter the EU via Croatian territory. Consequently some of the older member states are resisting their entry. Let’s hope they remain intransigent just like they are with the UK!

Downside is that Croatia has become a bit trendy in recent years, especially with Germans & Dutch so you have to share the place with loads of others these days. Even Plitvice Lakes which might once have been regarded as a bit remote gets crowded out with tour buses daily.

Another thing to factor in for 2021 is the inevitable disruption at French ports created by angry fisherman unhappy about UK gun boats protecting UK ‘sovereign’ waters. Entry to France might be problematic and Brits won’t be assured of a warm welcome either! It might be easier to cross the Channel in a small inflatable than LV.

Well i was off the shores of Iceland during the cod wars and i can tell you it was not a very pleasant experience, especially when an Icelantic ice breaker converted into a gunboat crashes into the bow of your much prized HMS frigate.

I think it may take a couple of months, but all these countries putting out the threats now will calm down when they realise just how much revenue they are losing as a result of being hostile towards the UK, rotting cheese, vegetables, wine etc on the side of French ports will focus some minds.

Still hoping to make the crossing in April with a drive down to probably Spain for a couple of months.undecided

One almost wonders if this intransigence on both sides is the precursor to an economic war of attrition to see who's economy buckles first.

I have to agree with Rufs that in a few months things will calm down and after all in spite of politicians rhetoric I have found that in the past few years the ordinary French people have been very friendly as usual.

I may need to revise my catering arrangements in the light off the other thread. I've always travelled with a packed fridge and freezer as there are better things to do on holiday than trek round Carrefour/Mercadona (other supermarkets are available).

This all may be academic unless the Covid situation stabilises.

An interesting article in the Daily Mail today (14/12/20) by Alexander von Schoenburg - Editor at Large at BILD, Germany's biggest selling news paper.  I normally take anything I read in the DM with a large pinch of salt but this guest article is well worth reading carefully and fully.

Hopefully not. The problem for hose in the EU is that many economies have had a spanking and some of the 27 members are in a worse state than others by far. I would hate to see them suffer further - or any of Europe

I think the combination of CV19 and the thing we can’t talk about on here means we’re all going to suffer further. The £ will remain on the floor against the € so travel will cost more as well as being more irksome.

I think many  people take food in the quantity that you do - and then post on here that they are at the same time providing economic benefit to the places they visit.

It doesn't last that long! I still seem to spend a fair bit of time in supermarket aisles. Anyway, there are my OH's dietary needs to consider as stuff isn't always available 'over there'.

I think we will wait another year before taking the caravan to Europe.  Chance for Covid to die down a bit, andxtime to assess the effect of Brexit.  I'll be looking with interest at how people get on next year.

We simply empty the house fridge into the van fridge and take whatever else is around that would go off if left behind.  Plus we normally take a few home produced ready meals, e.g. Bol sauce.  Our stays are normally quite long so we soon need to shop and eat locally and enjoy continental fare.

Thinking back to the early 70's pre EU I seems to remember we were able to take all things except uncooked potatoes.  Back then most things were needed as I remember there being strict limits on the amount of money you could take.
