well you were as you put it on wink but no it's good just not genius that's all.

OK sorry, to make amends one just for you.

You get your electric bike out on a site an cycle at an average speed of 10mph along a straight road. you then turn around and cycle back to the site at an average speed of 20 mph (do you want this in Km/h btw)

what is your average speed overall?

Yours fitted into the pictorial theme BB, anything else can be reserved for a maths thread. wink Thanks, I like maths to be fun, it makes me feel like a"genius" when I know I'm not (mathmeticians daughter speaking here. tongue-out)

    Don't believe it!

multiplication and division before addition and subtraction is the rule so

    230 - (220 / 2) = 120innocent

I will when you work out your average speedsmile

but as a hint to yours your are solving:

    3x = 21

    2y+x =19

    z+ y + x = 15

but the final twist is finding x + 2z(y-1)

i had to 'go back to school' for this one and write out the formula for each leg of the trip....then put them together formthe whole trip.

i think its 13.33 mph (or 21.45 kph as i noted the continental driftwink)

indeed and it works for any distance, d, as it cancels out when you solve

    average speed = 2d/(d/10+d/20)

I could say that you wouldn't get full marks in an exam question as you only gave a third to 2 dp, ie 13 and 33 hundredths, when really it is 0.3 recurring, (neither would 13.333 but 13.3333 would have got the mark according to exam board marking rules) but that would be nitpicking to say that so I won't.

    You should retrainsmile

    yes, 5! = 5x4x3x2x1 = 120

If you had five different caravans, sorry motorhomes, and want to know any many ways there are of arranging them in a row then there are 120 different ways of doing it.
