don't see the point in that Dave. why change half a bottle for a full one knowing the second bottle is full is the safe guard you have plenty when on site. when the first is empty swap to the full one and exchange the then empty one so the second is a full reserve ready for use when required.

A better solution, if you aren't going the refillable route, is to change to the Gaslight cylinders. About the same weight for the actual cylinder as a Calorlite but capable of holding almost twice the amount of gas.

I’ll bear Gaslight in mind, CY, thank you, in case we have trouble changing our Calorlite cylinders at any time. I’ve had a look at Gaslight stockists, and the nearest to home is just over 14 miles away, however it does appear that you can buy online. That’s not too bad, considering our caravan stockist is a similar distance, albeit in the opposite direction. I’ve re-read some replies to my previous posts (in 2017), and Pippah suggested that she uses orders and has them delivered. Safefill is definitely not an option as our local Morrisons doesn't stock it, and the nearest place seems to be in north Kent somewhere. Perhaps if others are moving away from Calorlite, the stock of cylinders in circulation will be enough to keep us going for a while yet.
We’ll play the waiting game for now.

On clear advantage of the Gaslight is that it’s er.........well, clear meaning the content can be seen and removing the worry of guessing how much gas is left in the cylinder.

Yes, thank you, CY. I’ve just seen a link from peedee on another post that shows all the LPG stockists. With my limited knowledge of refillable cylinders I had previously searched the Safefill site, which doesn’t have anywhere nearby, however, a trip out to get a cylinder initially would be entirely practical. Will see how the supply of Calorlite goes for now, then discuss with OH about alternatives.

Spending a month in the New Forest, on a site without sanitation or EHU, we survived very well with our Calorlites. But we did need three replacements over that period. The friendly hardware shop in nearby Brockenhurst consistently had a stock of full ones. Assuming that caravaners won’t be enthusiastic to separate their awning, pack everything away and temporarily decamp to refill a fixed installation, refillable bottles might be an alternative. But a quick search of the area indicates that none of the New Forest garages sells LPG via a gas line.
OK, where there’s a will there’s a way, so of course such matters can be overcome, but I’m left wondering why Calor have quietly decided to abandon lightweight bottles altogether. With the imperative to switch away from fossil fuelled engines, we are more likely to see an expansion of electrical charging points, than LPG dispensers. Until, that is, people recognise that our National power supply infrastructure is so far short of adequate, that running the entire UK with electric cars can’t be done. At which point Hydrogen is a likely contender for the next generation of engines, but unsuitable for our leisure vehicles, without a major appliance replacement cost.
As I see it, it’ll be a very long time before exchanging ready filled bottles has been superseded.

One of our two 6kg Calorlites ran out just as I was cooking dinner when we were at Brighton site recently (the reason we carry 2). The wardens said they haven’t been able to get them for a while, and our storage site also now only stocks the ordinary 6kg Propane. A quick phone call to our local caravan/motorhome dealer established that they had Calorlite in stock which was regularly replenished. We had a drive there and got our replacement. En route back we stopped off for an accessory at a motorhome dealer, and could see several Calorlite cylinders in their storage cage outside so, for now, we don’t have to decide which way to go regarding a change.
I guess the problem will come as the cylinders currently in circulation age and are taken out of service.

We use 10kg (that's Gas weight) gaselite bottles from Homebase (they sell them usually for Barbecues you can see through the bottle to check gas level , not as heavy as metal bottles, different connector to Calor Gas bottles, Using a combination of Aires campsites, free and commercial Aires (only for Motorhomes) and Campsites with electric we survived on 2 bottles for 8 weeks in Spain.

We also use 10kg gas light, alternate with 10kg Antargaz Calypso, French , same design as gas light, though slightly smaller. & available at most supermarket fuel stations. For anyone going to France regularly, less than €24 for the gas & only €10 deposit. Butane, so may not suit winter caravanners. Didn't need to give a French address when signing up. Now using Calor 3.9kg as backup, till we can change main bottle.

Just used up the last of my Calor lite bottle. Understand that there are supply problems and may not be able to get a refill until new standard is brought out. However, in the interim, I am happy to go back to older type bottle. Now the problem. The club apparently won't accept a Calor lite swap for a standard bottle. Don't understand this - why do I have to go to a major Calor depot? Anyone else had a similar problem?

Thanks to EasyT for his response. Guess it looks like a personal choice of the Warden. Would have been nice if the club/Warden could explain the rationale.

It's not exactly the personal choice of a warden. The only personal choice is whether to stock gas at all. We buy our gas direct from Calor and are able to exchange the defunct lite bottles for the original 6kg. Some other sites get their supply from a third party who may or may not allow that option. I hope this is of some help?

I am not keen on the refillable type as we don't use enough gas to justify the cost. I am planning to buy a pair of the gaslight bottles instead. I like the idea of being able to see at a glance how much gas is in the bottle. I also like the thought of considerably less weight.

I've just tried to swap our 6Kg Calorlite for a refilled one at A Bell in Northampton, who for the last couple of years have had them when others haven't. Today they say they've had none for 10 weeks, and yer man there says it's his opinion they'll not see any more, ever.
Is he just trying to sell me his steel ones, or are other people finding them hard to get as well?I've got used to not having that extra lump of heavy metal in the front compartment when loading!

We have a full CalorlLite that we do not need as we have gone refillable, I expect we can use it up on the gas BBQ. Already sold our other full one a couple of years back.
If anyone in the Glasgow area is desperate for one, we could do a deal!

Anyone nearer my end of the world seen them in stock, please? I'm still wondering if it's just our shop playing to sell what they've got, or if Calor really are stopping them this time.

Morning
So, our calor delivery driver has told us that they are not producing lite bottles anymore. They are still servicing them so there are a few around but they will gradually disappear in the next couple of years. They've stopped stocking them at all at our depot in Cornwall. Because of that our supply of 6kg steel bottles has been very hit and miss due to the increased demand

This may just be me being cynical, but the prospect of "petition-vs-profits" left a wry smile on my face. Foregone conclusion, anyone?

Probably! However whichever bottle you "hire" that charge is gradually written off over the years and I think even after seven years you only get something like 25% of the original hire fee back so the difference between two types of cylinder is likely to be quite small? What concerns me more is that if I swap a Calor Lite in for a heavy steel is whether I can them swap that back for a Lite should I find then in stock somewhere?

A quote from a communication from Calor to a customer reads :-
"A decision has been taken to replace the 6kg lite cylinder with another lightweight product which we plan to bring to market in the future (Expected 2018). Actual release dates, and exchangeability for current bottles is not yet determined"
More than two years after the original press release it seems like Calor are quietly letting "Lite" bottles die.
This shows a lack of commitment to its loyal customers (especially caravanners) verging on disrespect and the fact that the Club have not been able to influence their decision speaks volumes.
However such is the way of things when a large multi national company has a dominant place in the market.

So easily addressed now in most units as I have said earlier, take my route and move over to Flogas's Gaslights.
Their aquisition of the BP product followed recently by the change of ownership of Homebase has resulted in these being again much more widely available, now through Flogas's very extensive retailers network.
Those units only designed for sale in the UK could have issues with physically getting Gaslights in, but those aimed more generally at the European market should be able to, as these cylinders are based on the same size used there.

A couple of days ago I went into Calor Gas own shop/ delivery centre to try and purchase 6kg Calor Lite bottle. They had ran out, said they might get more deliveries, but not sure when. However the very helpful employee made a couple of phone calls, and local bbq/ fire stockist had a few bottles left. When I arrived the bottle was waiting for me. So it is still around, and not sure if Calor knows what is happening
