Latest Calor Press Release on Calor Lite

I/We were talking about low users Pippah. As a low user who is always on EHU and uses mainly club sites and commercials why wouldn't a person choose calor. However I can see no advantage to a low user in using Calor Lite if carrying two bottles. I use 3.9kg calor as there is no significant difference in weight between that and the bulkier 6kg lites.
The reason for choosing calor for me as a low user on mainline sites is simply availability on the sites that I use at an average cost of 20p per day. Why would a low level, mainline site user choose to go off site for gas? On two occasions in 12 years I have not been able to get a replacement on site (last one sold) but as we move every 5 days always picked up a replacement on next site.
If off hook up regularly or using sites were calor not readily available that would be a different matter.
When I look online I see that stockists are either not showing calor lite or are not quoting a refill price. No idea what availability is like on caravan sites but seem difficult to source elsewhere

if i was using a non refillable system, i would have two cylinders, even if the 2nd one were a tiny one which just did the job should the primary one expire during cooking dinner....sods law....

I do carry two BB and have done for the last 6 years as we are away 120 nights.
Before I retired it was a different matter as we were in the caravan for probably 70 nights a year. Then I carried a single cylinder except on our Christmas break. At Christmas I would exchange the bottle shortly before Christmas Eve. Probably throwing away 10 nights worth of gas (about £2 worth). Always carried two at Christmas in case of power cuts.
Similar for the first 4 years of retirement as we were away in the caravan for maybe 90 nights with 30 nights flying abroad.

Thanks for the Info, had no idea they where eventualy replacing the light bottles. I have two, one on the van and a full spare in the shed at the bottom of the garden. I use very little gas and I think the one on the van is still 1/4 to 1/2 full and has been in use for 3 or 4 years. We used it two weeks ago when a pizza we had wouldn't fit in the small Ramoska we use. I may strugle getting a standard bottle into place even though the H is just 8mm and D 10mm different? Will have to have a look at that. On my useage they will probably last the lifetime of the van and us touring anyway. We don't intend renewing the van at anytime, this is our last.

Same here BB. I can't see any other way of doing it when you are not sure of how much gas is left but with Safefill you are in charge. I read Bri's post and am amazed at how little gas he uses! When I was connected to the grid, I used more gas than that. Amazing!

Although we have 3 Calorlite, we are very light users.
The proposed direct exchange to the new versions at no extra cost, does releive my concerns as the present versions should be avaiable until the replacements are available.
However we are planning to travel abroad next year for the first time hoping to stay away for several weeks or more. If we changed to either safefill or similar, would it be possible to refill abroad.

Certainly seen LPG pumps at the larger supermarkets. However I would question the need. We used to go away for up to ten weeks in our caravan to Europe and we only took two 6kgs Calor Lites and we always returned home with best part of a full cylinder. We tended only to use gas for cooking using the caravan cooker, I don't know if something like a Cadec uses more gas?

Thanks David.
We tend to be easy on our gas use, so we should be very comfortable with 2 bottles

We found that the voltage was so low on some french camp sites that the caravan fridge would not operate satisfactorily, so we ended up running it on gas......
You may end up using more gas than you plan to....

Please excuse me, I haven't read all the posts on this thread but with the nose weight problems some newer 'vans have, some may be swayed to keep and fill their own " lites " ( certainly not going to describe on forum how to do it ) it does get done.!

Volts and Amp(ere)s are not the same thing.

I'm a latecomer to this thread, sorry, and haven't read all 76 posts here but have an aside question. It says on David's OP link that when exchanging the Lite they require a production of the Lite specific receipt. We got two cylinders as part of the deal with our van, one full Lite and also one nearly empty steel one, which was in the van when we first viewed it, & which I begged off the dealer, to make having a spare work better.
No receipt for either cylinder, though, we just had a receipt for the whole caboodle. We swapped the steel one with no problem when it died on the Isle of Skye, but it looks from this as if I may be in difficulties when trying to swap the Lite for anything.0 -
Don't be lazy ....read all 76 posts .
Basically, as long as you have a Lite in your possession you can swap it for another Lite, if available, or for the 'new' type of bottle if/when it becomes available. A potential problem only arises if you accept a standard steel bottle in exchange for your Lite (because that is all the dealer has available at the time). Just make sure you hang onto a Lite.

From my experience, although I wouldn't be without It, we do use more gas having a Cadac than it would if we were just using the cooker. It is, however, very difficult to be completely accurate about it. I like using the Cadac so perhaps I use it more - and we have an electric ring on the cooker in the caravan.

An addendum seems to have appeared on the calor website, or at least I had never noticed it before, saying that you must have the original paperwork "purchasing" your Calor Lite cylinder before you can have one of the new lightweight cylinders if & when they ever appear....
(Tesla will have have invented an electric moon rocket before Calor can produce a cylinder ).
https://www.calor.co.uk/calor-lite-propane-gas-bottle.html
So those of us who have simply inherited a "Lite" or acquired one by swapping an iron clad cylinder appear to be out of the running...
Looks like Safefill will be getting my business after all.....

I understand from another forum that CMC and CCC are being consulted/are in discussion with Calor on this subject. The statement you refer to has I think always been part of Calor’s T&C’s - that you may need to show your contract if asked. I think it’s down to retailer discretion. Personally I’m still free wheeling on the free of charge replacements from the recall, and have enough to last for a good while yet.

Just been to Abbeywood clubsite.
There was someone exchanging a gas bottle. It was a heavy and asked if they could have a calorlite in exchange. They were told sorry but no.
When they tried to explain that they had accepted the heavy on their last exchange as there were no calorlite available at the time and told that they could get a lite next time.
The wardens at Abbeywood told them, that calor has informed them, that from now on, its only:-
calorlite for calorlite
calorlite for heavy
heavy for heavy
No heavy for calorlite!
I could see that there was plenty of lites in their cage, so it looks like calor, May have started the process to withdraw them.
I can see that theres going to be a lot of unhappy caravaners who (like me) are going to be looking to try and save weight elsewhere to prevent overloading the tight payloads.

Their website is still showing it as an acceptable exchange......
https://www.calor.co.uk/gas-bottles/buying-gas-bottles/gas-refills-exchanges-returns
I suspect the real excitement will start when their shiny new lightweights arrive and we all (sorry, some of us ) want two of those for our gas lockers.......

We have the same brief from calor. But my info is that lites aren't being withdrawn, they are just not being replaced.
Must be that we are down in the depths of Cornwall but we're still waiting for our first delivery of bottles, oh well at least my bank balance is ok for this month!!

If I recall correctly ? Calor have said they will only exchange the new type Lite when there available for an older one If you have your original receipt. I'm sure there and many folk like me who paid the extra initial deposit for my Lite's but that receipt is long gone
Lets just hope that they will at least just charge the difference in cost for the new lightweight one when exchanged. Although I think i know the answer.
I seem to use very little gas, so I still have one full/unused Lite and the other is nearly 2 years use in service but still just on the edge of the Green part of the gauge (virtually full) so in theory I should be good for a few years yet

I bought a 6kg Calor bottle on Tues. They asked me if we red a Calorlite in exchange for my standard heavy bottle .... As it is, I doubt the odd few lbs difference would make that much difference so declined his offer. He was very surprised.
That was at Tygas if anyone knows it.

We're just at the stage of nearly needing to replace our 6kg. It's a Calorlite & came with the van, so I have no receipt for it directly - I'll be interested to see what happens.
And most frustrating - Merve would say it's a moment for Safefill - as we've already had over four weeks out of this thing and keep believing it's about to empty... but it just did another few nights for us last week, and I understand there's no chance of a swap in France where it'll be going next, so I'll just have to give some unused gas back here in the UK as well as likely getting saddled with a great steel lump0
