David,
Thankyou for that link.
I currently have a Calor lite cylinder but as it is full I should not be troubled for a while. I shall run it half way empty and then keep it as the spare and shall use a 3.9kg propane as my main supply. This should be very easy to get a refill for.

So, if when your Calor lite runs out you can only get another if available, otherwise you will have to take a standard. You can change back to a lite if available at next replacement.
As retailers have already started saying that lites are no longer available (they can't get them from Calor) don't hold your breath on getting a replacement.
Also, how many years away is the "NEW" product designed to replace the lites?

I think i will now exchange our empty calor lite for a normal six in future as we only use one about every 15months and the £3 premium on lites is a rip off,and i am sure what ever the next generation of Calor lightweight 6kg is there will be another "premium" to give calor more profits,

There is an option on the web page to opt to take part in research regarding the new cylinder. It says they have already been in discussion with the two Clubs, but I don't know whether that that is to do with supply or what sort of cylinder the replacement will be. Perhaps too early but I will await the Club's pronouncements on that!

....perhaps this is one reason why CC have bee reluctant to engage with Merve in producing a sensible 'off gridding'article where one kf the key ingredients for making it pay is the use of a Safefill (or similar) refillable.....
oh, hang on, Calor dont do user refillable cylinders.....

Thanks David. Good article.
So it seems as I understand this announcement that 6kg Lite bottles will be refilled and sent out if they pass a service test, therefore they will always be in supply albeit a lot less.
I have one full and one running on dregs and wasn't sure what to do about exchange but after reading this I will just refill with a Lite as long as I can.
Interestingly there is no mention of a date for these new bottles but investing £1m seems like a lot of bottles so perhaps the launch is a long way off.
I will keep a record of the statement for future problems.

I seem to recall being charged a premium for the new Calor lite bottles when they were introduced. The reason given at the time was to cover the cost of development. Can we now assume then, that if we are forced to accept one of the older bottles when we exchange, that we will now be given that excess premium money back?

Surely you pay a £2 premium was per exchange so nothing to refund? The older style will be £2 cheaper to exchange so I suppose back to square one?

I remember exactly the same thing happened to the calor aluminium cylinders back in the 80's. They were brilliant and lighter than the calorlite. I don't know why they were discontinued.

David - why do you always take the position of the "establishment"?
Tigerfish is quite right. I and most of us have paid a premium to use Calorlite. Why should we now not get our premium back?
I know - because they can. As usual, we get ripped off

I can't remember how much it was but I paid an extra premium to have the Lite cylinders. the 2 came to just under £140 as I didn't have any to exchange.

David - why do you always take the position of the "establishment"?
I don't think that is a fair comment.
David, as a moderator, has joined many of us in mocking the Clubs fake news story around the "book a hardstanding trial" and their suggestion that it caused "confusion", even though we all manage to choose between Economy, Awning, Non Awning & Serviced pitches.
I can't speak for him, but possibly what he meant was there is a small (about £2) premium for a 6kg Calor Light over an iron clad 6kg, when obtaining a refill. I have certainly never paid an enhanced cylinder rental price, I think Calor Lites were (initially at least) handed out as straight swaps for ordinary 6kg propanes or 7kg Butanes.....?

I think that my comment was absolutely fair - but then I would wouldn't I? I do not post very often on this (or any other website) but it is obvious to me that David very often follows the "party line" of the suppliers such as Calor. How does he not understand that Calor charged us a premium for Calorlite when we could have had standard 6kg bottles for £2 less. We can now have standard bottles for £2 less - big deal - that was always the case
I repeat - as always we are being ripped off.

Wasn't I saying exactly the same thing?
I am not sure what party line there was to follow? For Calor Lite there has always been a £2 premium over the standard heavy bottle with the same amount of gas. I think everyone understands that. I was responding to a post that suggested a refund was in order which didn't make sense when we all know the extra £2 is for the exchange and use of that cylinder whilst the gas lasts. When you come to exchange you have the choice of having another Lite or standard but if you take the Lite the exchange price is £2 extra.
If we were talking about the original hire contract and there was a difference in price then working on a reducing scale I would imagine you would get slightly more for handing in a Calor Lite.

Whether or not David follows the party line (and I think he does) the fact is that Calor are taking us for a ride
I have a Calorite for which I paid a premium of £2 to replace. Now, we are expected to replace our propane cylinders without receiving any recompence for the fact that we have previously paid a premium.
So, who is ripping off who?

Your argument does not seem logical to me. I think most of us were given the lite as a replacement for the standard, no new contract, just a higher refill price. I certainly did not have to take the lite, it was my choice. The higher refill price was I assume justified by the increased cost of maintaining the cylinders. In effect I was paying extra for the use of the cylinder whilst I used it. So why if I switch back to the standard should I get a refund. Refills of the standard are to remain less than the lite as far as I am aware.

When I purchased my 2 Calorlite last year the cylinder hire charge was higher than a standard one. See Here.
So when I change it and can't change it like for like, I think Calor should refund me the difference on the hire charge (£5 for each one) or at least give me a voucher to swap back in the future when the new one is available or If I come across a supplier who still has stock. I paid a premium for something they have stopped producing.
I can't be sure, but it used to be you could only exchange a cylinder like for like when you needed a refill.

Someone posted a link a few months ago to show which could be swapped for what and I noticed I can no longer swap my very tall slim one 47 kgs? for a more manageable size as I don't use as much as I used to at home I might have swapped it for a 15 kg one which I think I did to get the 47kg one. However they have lost me to Safefill! You should definitely get your premium back if there aren't enough Lites around - but I think you might be lucky!

If you paid extra for the contract and want to switch permanently to the heavy version that would seem fair enough. However, how I read the link was that you could switch back to the lite if available on your next replacement, or to the new cylinder when developed. I assume if you have to accept a heavy in place of a lite the retailer will be supplying a chit to show that you have done this.

There is some interesting reading Here, Looks like they have moved the goal post on exchanging cylinders and it would be, if you are able to, start off with a standard and swap at refill to a Lite for no extra charge.

I thought that had always been the case, at least in theory. It's how I got my lite cylinder. However, shortly after that they became a bit more difficulty to come by and none of the places I asked would change my second heavy for a lite, as they wanted to keep what stock they had for like for like replacements.
I assume they are now offering £7.50 for any unwanted cylinders in the back of people's garages. As these are most likely the heavy sort and they need as many as they can get to cover the lite shortfall, as they go out of service.

But as you can see from the first link I posted from my supplier, because I wanted to start off with 2 Lite's I was charged the extra rental.
In all honesty, I use so little gas anyway the new type might even be available by the time I need one. One bottle still has the tags on it and the other is still showing as nearly full after 13 months and about 10 trips. It's only ever used for limited cooking and making sure the other appliances function on gas every now and again.

Didn't get one, just a till receipt and card transaction print out

You have normally been able to exchange propane 6kg for butane 7kg for no "charge" as you could also change the other way this also applied 6kg lites and all you pay is the refill price, but the 6kg lite also includes the add £2/3 premium

Given the cavalier way Calor treat their customers, it seems an ideal time to desert them for a refillable.
