Thanks AD. Very interesting about the Austrian links.I will have a think about asking for it for a Christmas present sometime.  I would like to know where my maternal grand-father came from.  He was a foundling who was adopted and was very dark with dark very curly dark hair so possible not British. I did my family tree for some years and all my father's family are peasant stock who lived in very poor conditions with a number of the women dying from TB.

AD. Thank you. I am not really looking for birth detail just an idea of where some of my roots might lie.

Brue. Thank you for the information. I will investigate.

We went to check on our caravan in storage today. What a depressing sight. The caravan itself is fine and watertight thank goodness but it is standing in 2 inches of water. We asked if any hard standings are free but unsurprisingly non are free but they have put us on a (long) waiting list. However they did offer to move it to a different dryer plot. They will move it with the tractor when the rain stops. We have been storing the caravan there for years and have never seen it like this before.

Our local news reminded us of just how bad the wet weather has been, farmers still not able to do spring sowings etc.

Hope you enjoy having a go with a DNA kit Millie, I wouldn't take it too seriously but it's a fascinating thing to do. smile

Nice sunny day in S.Cumbria but it started to rain about an hour ago. Bit of a nothing day for me, the odd job round the house and a couple of hours watching the Commonwealth Games.

Glad to hear that both you and your OH are feeling so much better.

Millie, it can't be fun finding your van standing in 2" of water. It certainly sounds as if you've had a lot more rain than we've had up here. Most unusual for your region I think.

We haven't put the awning up yet since arriving yesterday because of the rain and soggy ground. We plan to leave it until Sunday now.

I collected my new medicines this morning from Tesco Pharmacy. It seems that 3 new medicines have been prescribed: Jardiance Empagliflozin 10 mg., Indapamide 2.5 mg. and Lercanidipine 10 mg. These medicines are supposed to reduce blood pressure and reduce sugar levels. Do you recognise any of these, EasyT?

Yes we plan to speak to the warden before leaving on our next two day visit to Littlehampton as we need to leave one car here maybe on our pitch if we can't use the car park. After all, the car will only be using the same space as the caravan would if left on site for the two days away.

The new wardens operate a different system to last years wardens. The new warden doesn't keep a book for signing in and out because she says she can see who is coming and going.

Last year, there were seasonal pitch caravanners here that kept their outfit on the same pitch for the entire season without moving at all.

Yesterday we arrived back at Northbrook Farm just after 12 noon but didn't get to see the warden on arrival. So we drove on to our pitch using the Shogun with the lowest setting of four wheel drive. Despite the rain and soggy ground I reversed the caravan on to the pitch without any problem at all. The Shogun never ceases to amaze me with its capability! Also the off road tyres must have helped grip the wet grass.

That's the reason our future DIL didn't come to visit at the weekend, still a lot of spring sowing to do! She dug a trench in an effort to drain a lake, sorry field, on Saturday but weather turned again, that's on fairly free draining fen soil - what will we all be eating this year?

Nelliethehooker I think you're right about rainfall in this area, most unusual to these levels. Often we in the east only possess waterproof clothing for excursions to wetter areas 😂.

Milliehull I hope you can get to a drier part on your storage site. We had a similar problem with an earlier position on our storage site. Almost impossible to get into your van when it's like that.

We collect Arbuthnott, he's ensconced in the carrycase he travelled home in, snuggled in hay. I set up the feeding station, posh way of saying saucer of food and another of water, near where we've sited his temporary abode. It's raining hard again and since he's been inside a shed I'm worried it's cooler and definitely wetter 😲, so rigged up some extra cover as the shed canopy wasn't deep enough. He seems to have had a good shuffle about as the hay isn't all neat and tidy now but doesn't appear to have eaten any food. Foolishly I thought he'd be let loose to find his own home, but chatting to the hedgehig lady it makes more sense for him to have his bedding and a dry place (wish she'd suggested this before!) like a child/puppy/kitten to settle so tomorrow OH is to build a hedgehog house.

Our friends and neighbours collected one of their rescued ones last Friday and have yet to see it venture out. It's in its box under the loggia but they can see him breathing. Apparently they are going to bed later and later because they sit indoors watching for him to emerge. Haven't gone that far myself - tonight anyway 😉. Naturally we hadn't chatted previously to learn they'd prepared a new hedgehog house.

A lot less stressful, cariadon, than living in a house with a crippling mortgage or collossal rent to pay. By buying a caravan, we got a brand new fully furnished modern home for £28,000 compared to having to pay £250,000 for a small unfurnished flat in this area!

I don't think the answer is to build more houses. Eventually, there'll be no green space left. Caravans are a better form of dwelling because they can be moved and thereby, give the land, that they were previously occupying, back to nature. More countryside, trees, forests and green space is better for everyones health!

Even my Smart car has difficult doing 5 mph. Even without the accelerator pedal pressed, it is still necessary to apply the brake to get it down to that speed.

Sorry but I don't know enough about hedgehogs, Bakers2, to comment too much on that subject. All I do know is that you shouldn't give them milk because it makes them ill.

It's been raining on and off all day here too, HD. It seems to have stopped now though, as I type this post! Perhaps some fairer weather is on its way soon if the forecast for next week is anything to go by!

Very expensive, Bakers2 from memory of my last visit to Boots opticians.

I used to go for an eye test once every two years but the optician insists that I shoukd have my eyes checked annually which will no doubt double the cost if it means new glasses every year!

I got an umbrella as a free gift when I bought this Smart car. The salesman told me that I'll get more free gifts when I take delivery of the new Smart Electric!

Aircraft cabins can be full of germs, perhaps best to avoid air travel, Tammygirl!  Not worth flying to the Canary Islands if it's going to make you ill. Best to stick to caravanning like me!

Malcolm You are so lucky to have a wife that works so hard, do you share roles like inside the van is her's and outside yours.

That is how my OH and I do it, and we both do the heavy jobs like putting the big awning up. Anyone else do it that way

Yes Wales is stunning, what part of Wales have you been?  I think the South and West is the best, but then I am biased.

Presumably you won't have that problem with the electric one?😀

Very grey and wet here. I think it has rained most of the night. It won't be improving ground conditions.

My wife and I are glad not to have the hard work of looking after children. We both know what that's like, Oneputt! It's not just the hard work but the expense as well. Children these days want mobile phones, computer games in addition to all the other expenses of food and clothing, particularly shoes. Their clothes hardly get worn before they grow out of them and need new ones. Where does all the money come from? It doesn't grow on trees, Oneputt, that's for sure!
