    Kj

Not really investigated alternatives as I think I have reached the stage where I just want rid of things. The roof bars had previously been advertised when they became redundant. I think what I am finding is that it is a lot of bother advertising things for very little return. I have had some success of some Facebook motorhome selling groups. I still think it a shame that we don't have a section on this forum where you could either advertise items for sale or even offer them for free. I am think low cost items, perhaps under £100? Also my recent experience of sending things to people is that it is getting more and more expensive which mitigates against selling less expensive items as its not always possible for people to collect. We have disposed of unwanted furniture but generally that goes to local charities.

Thanks Nellie, glad you got home finely and safe. Thanks to your OH as well, no haven’t seen The Thirteenth Tale. 👍 I was at Brodsworth when they were filming, not that any of us were allowed anywhere near of course, but we did catch a glimpse of Olivia Coleman. They filmed at Wentworth Woodhouse and Burton Agnes as well. I think Duncombe Park was the exterior. I hadn’t realised Sophie Turner was in it as well, pre GoT I am guessing. Sounds a good watch, so thanks.

We overslept this morning, after a late night last night. I use my phone as alarm and battery had died overnight. We were up late watching Man Utd v Middlesbrough, which ended up in penalties. The right result for us, ye hah😁 Our back up alarm is useless nowadays, found upside down in his basket, snoring his head off🐶🤣

Yes, it often involves a lot of effort trying to sell things, even giving them away can be tricky as people say they want them but do not turn up at the arranged time!  That has happened to us on more than one occasion.

Personally, I would not try selling where it involves the cost of sending items, but locally through community pages can sometimes be successful.

DD inherited a fancy designer light when she bought the house, lovely to look at, but useless as a functional light over the large island in the kitchen .

I have helped her replace it with 3 fairly simple fittings, the difference is amazing, she can now see to prepare food there!  To recoup some of the cost of doing this, she is trying to sell the fancy fitting for about 1/3 of the new price, but no luck so far.  Time to reduce the price I think!

We have lots of stuff to sell as well, car stuff, a saddle, other horsey stuff, cycling stuff, etc…. EBay definitely isn’t what it used to be. We leave stuff we don’t want out on street us and neighbours, with a “help yourself” sign on. Most things disappear quite quickly, couple of days at the most. Anything else goes to my cousin’s animal welfare charity shop, and other charities.

Belated happy birthday to MilleH and happy birthday to Bakers2 sorry not been on here in awhile.

We've been busy getting on with jobs outside when the weather has allowed and when not I've been busy on the sewing machine making all sorts of covers and things for the MH.

Miserable day today raining since we got up, forecast is for snow but I doubt we will get any here.

Now have a date for our new windows getting fitted, not until we get back from Lanzarote end of March. They wanted to come just before we go but I said NO thank you.

Like Kj we quite often dispose of unwanted items through our local FB groups. Anything that is FREE goes very quickly and also items that are fairly priced. Trying to sell other items that's bigger or requires posting can be a bit on a hit or miss but I usually achieve it even if I have to try a few times. GumTree used to be very good but haven't used it for awhile.

Same here, nice to hear you enjoyed your birthday Millie and hope Bakers2 is having a good day too. smile 🍹🍰

Sounds like you've been busy TG. I've got some projects to finish, now the evenings are getting lighter it will help things along.

Going to get a take away from our pub tonight, having a break and it's given me time to catch up with relatives abroad, sending off some news and photos which I should have done during Christmas. Just heard from my cousin in New Zealand so guilt has spurred me on!

    David { DK } ,

I'm not sure where I heard this-- possibly on here tho' :--

      Place your redundant items by your gate with " Free to a good home " on them. Then, should they not go, change the sign to " £30 " each --  guaranteed to be gone before the ink is try { but with no £££ to be seen  money-mouthsealedlaughing   }

( Not sure what is happening on this blithering Forum today but It took me ages to get posts up to start with due to " Service Errors " then booboom all seems to be up and running ok,  Like Weird Man, Proper Weird yell   )

I led a tour round the Cathedral today. It consisted of 5 people and a lovely dog - a five year old black lab called Poppy. She was so well behaved.

I hope your isolation and extraction of your wisdom tooth goes well tda. I had my 2 bottom wisdom teeth out many years ago and I was very pleased to get rid of both of them.

I have got rid of many things via our local freecycle group, especially when clearing out our garage and shed. All went within a few hours. Also when we sold our caravan last year our DIL put a lot of our caravan stuff up for sale on local facebook groups. Once again everything went very quickly. In both cases everything had to be collected. We rarely take anything to our waste reclycling centre except for garden waste.

We try to recycle or pass on as much as possible, DD is very keen on recycling.

We do have quite a bit of glass/plastic/metal to go out..... maybe  a full bin  every 4 weeks.....and the same with paper and cardboard.  Sometimes we have some big boxes to dispose of....too much for our bin even when cut up, so we take those to DD and she takes them to her nearby tip.

We cannot take stuff there......we are not Glasgow residents.....and our car is anyway in danger of getting the roof bars damaged as the height barrier has sagged!

As a result of all the recycling, it would take us 8 weeks to fill the "landfill  bin".but we put it out at least every 4 weeks so it does not start to smell bad.

We have garden waste collected, we do not have a lot, but if they start charging we would send back the bins and take it to the tip.   Our Council Tax is already too expensive without any "extras"

It has been a thoroughly miserable day here......cold, windy and very wet.

Discovered water dripping into the garage from above one door, so that will need to be investigated.....there are a few possibilities.   Will purchase some sealant and seal up all the possible ingress points.  Just hope the plaster board is not too damaged.

Went down to DD for 11.00 and loaded up the first of my big tools to come home.  Only one tool would fit in the car even with the back seat folded down.  Took that home, it was not too heavy, then back to DD for lunch.

After that DD and SIL helped to load my huge band saw into the car and we all went up to our house to unload it while OH was left to look after Callum and  Nathan.

When we finally came home I brought some of my smaller tools home, plus a fair pile of screws that had accumulated down there, so just my table saw still to bring back.

We would have to pay to have our garden waste bin emptied hence the reason OH takes it to our waste recycling centre. As you say KjellNN the council tax is expensive enough without having to pay for 'extras'.

We do not have any grass, so our garden waste is minimal.  If we have prunings, we shred them and spread them as mulch, so it would only be weeds to dispose of.  Not worth paying an annual fee for a garden bin!

Yesterday we went to collect the caravan from storage,  we'd had some rain overnight at home so we're surprised to find the van had a covering of snow!!! surprised  By the time we got it home it was filthy so it had a quick wash down. Repacked most of of the stuff this morning as it was dry and sunny. We were told at the vans last service that the fridge wouldn't work on gas, the service guy offered to replace the expensive control panel which he said it needed. We decided to wait as we usually only use on electric anyway. Today OH after checking the fridge handbook decided to re set the fridge,  low and behold after a couple of goes it lit, so we left it on and it now seems OK...yippee.. result 🤞🤞

Had a walk round Charlecote Park this afternoon, weather turned a bit grey and then some drizzle so cut the visit short. Called in at the pub on way home,  then a very expensive stop off at the farm shop! money-mouthsurprised

We have managed to get rid of quite a few bits on gumtree, some we sold and some offered "free" to be collected. The local scrap man will take stuff too if left out.

Our local council are to start charging for garden waste collections next month, we have agreed to share a bin & the annual cost with a neighbour. Neither of us have much garden waste as our gardens aren't very big.

Glad you enjoyed your birthday Millie,  hope Bakers2 is having a lovely day too.

I could easily fill two garden bins every fortnight😁 We do pay for ours, it’s around £30 I think, but we’ll worth it to us. Gets emptied every fortnight mid March to end of October, one a month in between. I still have to take some stuff to tip. We have big hedges, two lawns and lots of roses and shrubs, so don’t mind paying for it.

We have 2 Brown bins for garden waste and pay for them. The service is a lot like Ttda's. We need them as well. Grass cuttings from 3 lawns, hedges, even trees. We sometimes, depending on the season have to borrow one of our neighbours This is usually autumn and leaf fall time.

Happy birthday to Bakers, depending of course  whether she wants congratulations or not.smile

Sounds like Millie had a nice day. Must admit we like Stamford as well but quite a while since we've been. So many places, so little time.

It's been an absolutely atrocious day weatherwise here. Best forgotten.

We have paid £30 a year for a green garden waste bin for the last 4 years. We couldn’t do without it, our garden isn’t that big but a lot of bushes and shrubs. It gets very full of leaves in the autumn. Just couldn’t keep driving to the tip with it all.

Talking of Council tax, we viewed a nice house today. Then got home and checked the council tax price, that was a shock! They have ‘open days’ here so people have appointments to view all day. Ours was quite long compared to others, 30 mins then the next people. I have spent longer choosing shoes! We’ll see, we haven’t had an offer on ours yet and one of the others who viewed is bound to have already sold.

A grey start to the day and I managed to get the pre-breakfast walk in dry. Started to rain just before we headed out for our main morning walk but didn't get too wet. Off then dried up and I was able to get the first water off the car. I will clean it properly when we get a decent day. More rain later in the afternoon when I took Flyte out between the rugby internationals, and again this evening.

We saw a very upsetting incident this morning just as we were getting back towards home. A small black and white cat dashed over the road straight under a car....It had no chance, poor thing. Don't know if the driver realised what had happened but the person didn't stop. There was nothing we could do for the cat, not knowing the owner either, so I just took it from the middle of the road and placed it out of the way of other vehicles.

I was looking at the Queen at Sandringham yesterday and I can remember quite clearly my Mum suddenly reacting to the news about the King's death on the radio all those years ago. Mum dashed round in tears to tell a neighbour. Our road  celebrated the coronation and the participants later gathered for a photo reunion which appeared in the local paper. One photo with all of us children  in fancy dress and a later one as pensioners! My sister and I couldn't get to the second event. smile

Thank you for the birthday wishes. I had a very chilled and lovely day. Sunny and dry for our walk too! We set off to Shoeburyness, I fancied Frinton but tide times were wrong so opted for the slightly closer destination and a look at The Thames - also knew there are sheltered outdoor eating places with the dog. Not been for a couple of years.

Traffic was awful, hindsight said it would have been a more pleasant trip to Frinton! But parking wasn't an issue, a lovely walk and plenty of open green space for Dora to run and chase. Also very conveniently placed seat for OH to watch the river activity and bird life on the shoreline as the tide was coming in. Sadly the wind was jolly chilly but OK, apparently just his right ear felt cold - however he adjusted his hat. We discovered The Harvester was dog friendly, not been in one for years and not necessarily our first choice but convenient.  Very reasonable lunch, quite busy but spacious and we found a table area. It clouded over dramatically  whilst we were eating. Then drove into Southend 'proper'. Much busier, but managed a parking space close to Rossi ice cream parlour, so OH bought us one each for pudding which we ate in the car people watching and noticing white horses start to appear in the Thames. Home for cuppa, cake and snooze. It happens when you finally get to draw your VERY delayed state pension 😤🤐🤬. We had a lovely video call with the NZ crew, girls just in their undies, knickers to you and I 😀. It had been 20c overnight and yet another day in the 30's there so complete contrast in clothing to us here was dramatic!! Whilst they ate their breakfast. And as a special extremely welcome treat I slept all night 😀👏and I had a day where the house move hardly popped into my head.

DEBSC I wish you all the luck in the world with your venture. My advice when you find a buyer is to dig deep, very unBritish!, into their financing of the purchase gone are the days when you got a mortgage and paid it off gradually over 25 years! It is part of the estate agents job to check it out, I took their word - it 🤞is all good but I didn't see or think to question mortgages, pural not singular, when we had the written agreement, there is an issue on one of them apparently so all hold again until Wednesday.  I dread to think if it's not resolved...... Yes I agree you have more time choosing an outfit than you have these days on spending half a million on your dwelling.......

It's pouring down and blowing very well at times here so another wet walk, Dora and I had a wet sleet one on Friday, which made my birthday sun so much more welcome. Maybe I haven't upset everyone of the gods??

On the subject of unwanted items I've used all methods, very successfully since last summer! A friend loves Ebay and put some stuff on there for me very successful she was too 😉. Local Facebook, neighbourhood pages too along with a bits placed on the drive and charity shops but certain ones are VERY picky and won't accept some items, not just duvets/pillows etc which I understand, without an appointment. Anything to save it going to landfill. Ive only been messed about a couple of times.

We are very lucky here, our council collect food waste weekly and alternaternate weeks black bin, bag for cardboard, a green box which you can put cans bottles small electrical items clothing and shoes in, the next week up to 2 brown bins, bag for paper and a bag for plastic and juice containers - that bag goes with contents. All free. You do need your wits about you, and possibly a degree, to get things in the right place and out on the right day, but I'm used to it now. I believe it's a simplified system where/if we go but only one collection a week so stuff hangs around n the 3 different bins.

Nelliethehooker how distressing to watch the demise of the beautiful cat. I'm so glad you moved it, hopefully the owner will learn of its demise and not be left wondering. Our cat got hit by a car, we didn't see that bit but we're fortunate to she her run into a neighbours garden, so we found her. Broken pelvis, so 6 weeks in the rabbit run in the dining room! Apparently their instinct is to hide and often they die of their injuries without being found. Wild genes to the end.

Right must get shifting... enjoy your day folks

We lived in Hanwell in London with my grandparents when I was very young. One of my first memories is of all the family standing under the bridge at the end of the road. I was being held in the arms of someone in the family and I remember we all stood with lots of others and watched a train go over. Years later, in my teens, I mentioned this and my Mum said,’ how on earth can you remember that’, I learnt then that it was the train carrying the Kings coffin from Paddington to Windsor I think. I was almost two at the time. Strange how these moments when adults are marking something momentous stick in children’s heads.

Obviously being a mere youngster I wasn't around when ER succeeded to the throne.laughing

Another poor quality day weather wise. Very windy, bins blown over type of breeze, with squally showers. No hanging around chatting to neighbours for minutes on end when out on our walk today.

Spent the day trying to firm up some plans for our Spring trip. Mrs WN threw a spanner in the works yesterday with a suggestion that has had me chasing to find the end of the rope. I do love a good mixed metaphor! 😂 Still, the time hasn't been wasted. She is trying to get me to cut down on travelling too far and as often so we may well spend more time in the Netherlands and skip Germany now. More planning to do and then we'll probably wing it when we get there anyway.🤷‍♂️

Its a bit weird but I don't have a memory of George VI dying but I seem to remember a lot about the Coronation. I think I may even have some old newspapers from the day somewhere. I remember the Queen returning from Treetops. I was 6 or 7 at the time. I remember going with the school to see a film of the Coronation in colour (we didn't have a TV at the time)  All the youngster got a glass or a mug to commemorate the Coronation which I still have.
