ABM Haynes isn't far from us and they have a shop with their books and also on line too. Their offices are over the road from the museum, so it's all virtually on site.

    1. Great pic TDA we liked the red room too also liked the one with the Minis which was interesting as was the speedway exhibit up the stairs.

Had a good day yesterday we visited Etal  village and had a walk around there they do have a little narrow gauge train but we didn’t go in it place wasn’t too busy. After that we returned to Berwick and had a walk around the town which was busy due to the marker being on. Weather here this morning isn’t great it’s been raining most of the night and still is now so the planned bike ride was abandoned not sure what we will do now just a drive and see where it takes us I suppose

We like Etal, interesting place, good castle. We had a coffee at the pub as well, very nice.
A drive we can recommend is to take to the hills between the A68, and the A1, we used Soutra Aisle just by Soutra Summit as a focal point, and a picnic spot. The views are incredible, right across the Forth, and across to Edinburgh. TheAisle itself is interesting, this was the entry point for all the invasions, and there are some good history and archeological boards. A little bit further on, away from A68 is the village of Humbie. Has a really nice cafe, good cakes, crafts etc... we found it on a lovely sunny day, but nice if it’s a bit damp if you can get inside now.

Mellerstain Gardens are nice as well, not sure if house is open now. It was June/July when we were there. 👍

I think they had some in the shop, plus related stuff like jigsaws of the iconic covers. You often see them in charity shops, car boots and autojumbles. Car repairs generally are a bit of a thing of the past, unless you are into classics. OH and his brothers had quite a collection between them at one time. All nuts about classics. I enjoyed Haynes more than Gaydon, a lot more variety, but of course Gaydon is built around British marques, particularly Jags and BMC cars. There’s a very good American section at Haynes, and a room dedicated to Formula Racing. I missed out the classic motorbikes.  Whenever we visit such a museum, we always choose a few cars we like, such as best everyday car, best sports car, best dream car......

This was my sports car choice. Bit different for me, I usually opt for something like an XK150....bit of Prince banging out on stereo, wide open roads.....😁

A GF pub WN, that was a find.

Brue, my nephew suggested it as someone at his place of work had been. It was a bit of a drive but if anyone in the New Forest area or Ringwood then the pub is called The Compass Inn at Winsor. Dog friendly but children must be over 12. The food was good standard fare and a good portion to boot and prices reasonable for that area. Completely Gluten Free but a varied menu and nothing to suggest otherwise.

Glad to hear day 1 of the festival started well.laughing

Just got back from a weeks stay at the Northbrook Farm site on the edge of Worthing. It is a no facility site but at £14.50 a night with the VAT reduction who is complaining!!! Future of the site a bit uncertain at the moment but I understand there are negotiations ongoing between the Club and Worthing Council who own the site!  Couldn't face going back via the M25/M1 so decided to chance the A27/M27/M3/A34 route. Quite a bit longer in miles but it was a reasonable journey. Was cautious driving through the roadworks on the M27 after CY's tale of woe!!! Is it just me or has the country and its drivers just gone mad as they seems millions of them on the road!!!

I think it depends whereabouts you happen to be David. We noticed a lot of traffic last week on the main arterial routes through Dorset but that was expected and the week before in Devon was heavy.

Today was a different matter as we headed north on A roads through Blandford Forum and Salisbury (typical city traffic) to our new CL near Devizes. It was actually a pleasant drive even though it did take nearly 2 hours.

I think the CL is not far from where CY and Ttda stayed at Croft Farm. We can walk to there from here.

Hope those others en route have a safe journey as well.

Just to add to everyone's joy, the M27 "smart" work should be finished about the end of the year. The bad news is that they are going to replace the bridges at Ringwood just after the western end of the M27, starting in January and lasting almost a year. So heading west along the south coast is going to be discomfort in the gluteus maximus for a while yet.

I hasten to add, before rumour mongers amongst you get going, that I believe they stayed there independently of each other and at separate times. Phew.😛

Soutra is a new one for me, probably because it's off our usual routes but thanks for mentioning it TDA, makes fascinating reading. Hope we see it one day. Some lovely places in the Borders and no doubt Francis is enjoying being there just now. smile

Hmm traffic, I think we're used to slow traffic round here on the M5 and A303 and it's certainly been even busier this year and very noisy. But the M27 is the one we really don't like, we always seem to meet a queue....looks like they'll be worse soon. frown

Just had a tour of grandson's teeth thanks to Whatsapp and his recent visit to a dentist (after a long wait.) He seemed impressed with what went on and the prospect of braces. No doubt more close ups in the future! 😁

Hope the tooth is holding up WN. I had a wisdom tooth problem a few years back on holiday but got seen promptly by a local Denplan surgery. Our own dentist has just left Denplan, we've been transferred to something similar but not sure if this is what we want.

Nice photos RedKite, did the cake last long?!

TDA - Thanks for the info I have made a note of that route and we will do that next time we are over here we come here quite often.

WN /- We have actually been in the pub you are talking about we were in the New Forest a couple of years ago and had a meal there. I must admit we never noticed it was GF but I do remember the beer and the meal were great.

We ended up going down the coast today to Seahouses which is a great drive from here you go past Bamburgh Castle which is always a special sight. The town was busy but we managed to get a space and had a good walk along the cliff top and then had fish and chips overlooking the sea which was nice finished off with an ice cream from the van in the car park. All in all a great day a proper British seaside day out hehe.

Glad to read everyone else away are having a good time.

Hi Brue cake nearly all gone as gave some to friends and 2 pieces left for our friends who came to the restaurant last week to have a meal with us and as one of them made the cake did trains as chef in his past also the cake was very low sugar due to OH being diabetic

Weather has been grim here today and now the sky has cleared  typical and it has been the local boot sale but we did not go just very heavy rain and plus we think the locals would not turn up such a shame as it was cancelled in April and hope they can do it next April as our friends want to do another after this year's boot sale in their village so a bit more clearing out not as much as our friends.

Glad you got back safely TDA and hope garden not to much of a jungle.

Going to clean the roof of the caravan this week as borrowing a taller ladder than we have got and our friends want it back to do theirs before they go back to the UK so hope for a few dry days.

Cakes: our daughter made a wonderful cake for her friend's birthday celebations yesterday. She checked with the restaurant whether she could take it over yesterday afternoon - all OK they said. Then during the evening they said there would be a £5 per person charge to eat it 😡. Needless to say they took it home uneaten ☹.

How great that your family are keeping you up to date with their teething problems brue 🤣

I agree David - the traffic world seems to have gone mad these last few months. Various friends who have been to Norfolk recently said the traffic coming back, especially on the A47, was horrendous.

It sounds as though you are having a successful trip nellie.

Good to hear that you are back safely TDA. Good luck with the gardening!

Bit of disaster today. The journey was fine, and it appeared that lots of LVs are heading home northwards, and we found the CL without difficulty. The problem is that the lead from car to van had dropped down into the road and worn through some of the wires and we finished the trip with no indicators or brake lights!! 😯😵 Site owner is arranging for a mobile service guy to come out and hopefully sort of a new cable so we can continue our trip.

Good to read that you got home safe and sound, tda. Soutra is now on my list of places to visit too. Glad to read that you got to your site too WN, hope you got away not too late. Sounds like a lovely day out Francis, they have great beaches over there.

The cake looks lovely, RK, and the views too.

    Dreadful news Nellie.

Is it not possible to cut and splice (and/or feed through a connector) the damaged part or will that make the cable too short?

Hope you get it sorted. How long are you there for?

We'll see what is said tomorrow. It may well done down to a cut and splice. The farmer/owner admitted that he'd done the same when towing with his tractor, so is an expert on the repair. There is enough length to do that job, and was perhaps the reason that it dragged on the ground after a rather bumpy start to our journey. We are here for 5 nights so hopefully plenty of time to get it fixed, one way or another.

Nellie My father had problems when (way back n history) he jumped in the car to get some rolls and milk first thing,( in those days the electrics were run off the car and he hadn't disconnected!) He ended up pulling the cable out from the caravan. He spent the rest of the holiday under the towhitch repairing the wiring! So best to get an expert in!

That’s bad luck Nellie, hope you can get it fixed quickly. Mind, you would be joining the driving majority having no indicators, as a good few seldom seem to use them.

    Cheeky WN.....😂

I think the red mist would have descended if someone told me I couldn’t have my cake, and eat it Millie😡 Cheeky so and so’s, especially as phoned to check all was ok.

Had my Mum and Sister down for tea today, great to see them after three weeks away. Gave little Sis all her birthday presents, a big one for her. We have a trip to Yorkshire Wildlife Park planned for Tuesday, another birthday day out.

I was indeed slow off the mark ABM....had you asked about steam car manuals I might have spotted it. laughing

Nellie we did the same with our caravan, I think OH spliced it at the time but better to get it done properly with more travels ahead.

Millie for my late Mum's Christmas Day 80th birthday at a good hotel restaurant they did something similar and conveniently "lost" the cake. We'd all had a big meal and puddings so it has always annoyed me!

Another sunny morning here, our day off, gp appointment, food delivery, washing and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra tonight. We have got another day off tomorrow as the "studio" will be open but we don't have to be here. We are meeting up with friends who moved away last year, they're on holiday and we'll see each other in Selworthy to "partake of tea" in the genteely named Periwinkle tea rooms. wink

I am back again (past couple of years) to doing a bit of homebrew, mostly wine from kits, after several decades of not bothering. This morning I took delivery of a kit for 24 pints of Barley Wine, which I have not tasted in 40 years. It's a beer, not a wine, but gets its name from being an extremely strong beer - almost as strong as wine.

It's in the fermentation vessel, I am just waiting for it to cool down to 21C, before I add the yeast. Much has changed since I last brewed - I have a gadget to automatically control the temperature of the brew and I have built a gadget which simply drops into the brew to report the SG and temperature to my laptop, phone or what ever I might care to check it on. No more need to squint at an hydrometer or risk infecting the brew just to check it.

We'd all had a big meal and puddings so it has always annoyed me! brue, they didn't lose the cake they brought it out and sang happy birthday (after they had all had a big meal and desserts) and then announced that it would be £5 per head to eat it so daughter promptly picked it up and took it back out to the car.

Some years ago some friends gave OH for his birthday a Haynes manual for The Flying Scotsman.  It was a running joke when the FS broke down and ended up at Nene Valley Railway for repair that OH should go over there with his Haynes manual!

Just had our flu jabs at Lloyds pharmacy this morning. So much quicker and better than going to our GP surgery,

Good luck with the brewing Harry!

Millie, we had previously OK'd the cake but were presented with a sparkling candle on a plate....so my sister "quietly" marched out to the kitchen and found the cake under a counter. We all enjoyed it later at home, Mum was none the wiser, but it's not something that builds customer relations is it?!

We've had our flu jabs too, another job done. smile
