Orthotics made by NHS? 8+ months waiting for consultation plus at least 1 month for manufacture.

Orthotics made privately? Consultation within 1 week, manufacture and fitting done at end of consultation.

    Result? Happy feet, sad wallet.

Tammy, had a tip out to ASDA today,  but no problems with the Staff  ~~ indeed as I arrived at the entry spray n debug area the two girls started singing for me surprised. My only problems come with the shelf stackers who insist on filling a low level shelf then they stand up without any creaking or groaning -- just shewing off I reckon  wink.

    Still they had everything that I wanted smile and only sold me a couple of things I did not want but deffo needed so that was tolerable { just undecided }

As far as my specs are concerned, I've given the Varifocals a good 6 months plus trial and I'm back with the old Bifocals , much better as far as I am concerned, but t'others sit in the motor so I can comply with THE LAW should the bifocals do themselves a mischief cool even tho I can read the modern smaller number plates at the longer distance !!

Binge TV today with Ms Sturgeon and Mr Sunak

Can't say I binged on it but also watched a bit of both. The Scottish debate seems to be something of nothing. Wee Nicola has probably more long knives pointing at her than Julius Caesar!!! As a casual observer and not partisan, I always thinks she conducts herself well and seems to actually answer questions, not a trait we often find south of the border!!!  As for the Chancellor he might not be so popular when all those pensioners whose pensions  hover around the basic tax allowance find that for the next five years any increases they get they will pay a disproportionate amount of tax on!!!

To calm myself I have been watching several YouTube videos by "Build it with Rob"  Fascinating watching a loft conversion being built and the work that goes into it.

I have never had bifocals, I went straight to varifocals. What I have learnt over the years with varifocals is that glasses with a slightly larger lens is better and also being prepared to go for a more expensive lens choice so the change is more graduated. My long distance is still fairly good but I now need some help with it. It's the short distance from reading to using the computer where I really need the help! My problem is glasses and masks!!! Yesterday at the Garden Centre I nearly lost the glasses half a dozen times, now that would be an expensive accident!!!

David,   I had Vario's whileI was still working thirty years ago and had a similar problem then ! The slightest head movement can cause loss of focus when working at close range and I find that I can easily start off a headache, so I dropped them then. Now I know that they have improved ( well according to friends and opticians ) but I gave them a try and will not be bothering again .

I've never had bifocals either I went straight from normal to varifocals. My long distance is fairly good to but like DK need a bit of help when reading.

This pair are bigger than the other varifocals I've had before, I have always gone for the higher price lens so that the area of vari is much greater.

I can't put my finger on what is not good with this pair I wish I could.

OH has had varifocals for years so I had a good insight into what they are like, I also have a family member who works for Specsavers so have given him a good grilling as to what is better.

I think you get better vision with single vision lenses, I know with my sunglasses, which have single long distance lenses, my eyes feel so much better, same when I'm reading or close work the vision is better with my close up lenses. Having to keep changing them though is a pain in normal day life.

I don't take it too seriously but it elevated day time TV to a different level. wink

Yes people will feel the pinch somewhere, it was inevitable but tough.

As for glasses I've had varifocals for years but less clear vision in general as I've got older is making things harder. I've got too many bits and pieces floating around in my eyes. frown

OH is planning a pergola, so that's occupying his mind!

Have you considered LVT for the floor brue?  It is a little like laminate as it clicks together, but much easier to handle as it is flexible and easy to cut.   Ideal for kitchens as it is waterproof.

We have had a stack of it sitting in our hall for months now as we plan to have it in our bathrooms, but have been waiting to be allowed to have  the builders in to renovate one bathroom first.

When DD got her previous house back in 2012 she "discovered" LVT, so I laid it all through the ground floor, about 50 sq m, and in her 3 bathrooms, in the kitchen in SIL's flat, in our utility room, and just recently in DD's utility room and her new bathroom.

I have done quite a lot of wall tiling in the past, but never any floor tiles, but I would say that laying LVT is easy compared to ceramic tiles!

We also try to get booking one following on from the other, but it's not possible at the moment due to covid, so we just t and what we are offered. We

Woke to a freezing fog so shorts were abandoned for the time being. Early visit to the dentist again for fillings for OH then over to the shore for our rather chilly morning walk. Temperature didn't get above 4 C all day, even after the fog had gone. After a short afternoon walk I had my appointment at the hospital for the histology results following on from my op. Thankfully all has been cleared away so all I have to do now is ensure that I keep my face protected from the sun, so factor 50+ sunblock and a large brimmed hat is the order of the day when the sun is out.

Kjell, have you tried Spital Caravan park in Kendal. Just like a large CL with good sized H/S serviced pitch. Nearer to the town than the club site, just round the corner from Morrisons.

Busy evening here.  Eldest grand-daughter rang for a chat and to let us know that all is going well with her partner's new job  and nursery for great grandson. Her partner was furloughed at the beginning of the 1st lockdown and then made redundant in the summer so he has been at home being a full time dad for nearly a year. Youngest son in NI then rang but still no idea whether we will be able to go on our planned trip over there in April. Fingers still firmly crossed. Their children not going back to school until after Easter sadly. Eldest son then rang with a whatsapp video call. We discussed the budget but unsure how it might affect us.  undecided

I made a mistake with my new glasses. I ordered single lens. One pair long distance and one pair reading. Not a good idea. I cant cope with single vision long distance as cant see anything at all at close range. Dont know whether to get them changed or whether to wait and hope I get my cataract op soon. For the moment I am wearing my old glasses most of the time.

Aware of it but not contacted them as yet, they have suspended on line booking at present so will need to e mail or phone.

Have you used it?  Just wondering what road noise is like, and whether they need a deposit.

Also looked at a CL  a bit  further north Mosergh or something like that, they require a 50% deposit.

Might also consider something around Penrith, which we have never visited.  Not so far off the road either.  We would welcome any suggestions, but do want a guaranteed hardstanding and EHU.

Asda is not one of our favourite shops these days.  OH does go there occasionally for a few things, but told me she finds the checkout staff are often too busy chatting to customers they know rather than getting on with the scanning.

Their branded goods are OK, but not a fan of their meat, or ready meals, far too salty for our taste.   DD usually shops in Aldi, but has been avoiding shopping in person and could only get a click and collect slot at  Asda.  She has had some almost out of date items, then last week she got tangerines that were already rotting in the bag, and this week a bag of bananas that were starting to rot.

No problem getting a refund when she complains, but very disappointing.  We have offered to shop for her, and have done that a few times, but she does not like to impose too much.

Sounds like SIL will be back at the chalkface soon, now that more of the secondary pupils will be returning.  DD will be quite pleased as she says having him at home all the time is like having an extra child to look after!

    The perfect answer there, MillieH, is to wear the distance specs with a magnifying glass on a necklace.  Then, with your nose in the air, you can do an imitation of a high falutin'  'Milady' while strolling round the Cathedral precincts  winkinnocent  { Thinking along the lines of a lorgnette ! }

Tammygirl and milliehull on the glasses front it is a nightmare.

I've had varifocals but had to have those changed to bifocals when I first needed a combined pair. I did settle and wear varifocals from a different optician different manufacturer? I went to wearing contact lenses and since my cataract op have opted for a pair of each, but that's a pain. Close stuff still best with those nature gave me 😉. I've found multi focus contacts plus reading glasses off the shelf best of all.

I didn't settle into my expensive Lindenberg varifocals but gave up as COVID hit and my opticians of 15 years had big change of attitude. New optician great.

OH got his money back from a well known national chain as he couldn't see through the new ones whatever they alledgedly did. In fact he went in on one ocassion and saw the receptionist say to a colleague "oh here  comes again". He had similar issue and reglazing and resetting of lenses with my last optician but was never happy and generally wore old glasses from 10 plus years ago. No such issues with our new optician.

    I wish you both luck.

Milliehull have you considered a private OP? I was surprised when I enquired, nowhere near as much as I thought. Didn't need it as I was called quickly.

Rufs re shorts we have seen a few folk about in shorts over the winter season and my OH does not own a pair long trousers and prefers Craghoppers leisure trousers all year round and again a big no to sandals he is diabetic and has a large varicose vein on right leg from the knee down and the doctors will not do anything to it here hence trousers, he likes proper shoes and wears light ones in the summer but still wears socks I called it an age thing, there is a lovely pair of clarks sandals in the shoe cupboard heyho but I do wear shorts and sandals when the warmer weather arrives.

A lovely sunny day here and could be upto 19C.

We had a similar issue with a well known chain opticians B2.  My OH has worn varifocals for many years.  A few years back on changing prescription this particular shop seemed incapable of getting them correct; he had to look sideways to see clearly, the woman who was ‘correcting’ them was almost shouting at him that they are CORRECT!  After wearing glasses for 64 years I think the customer knows what is correct.  After much to-ing and fro-ing and many arguments they did eventually, with a re-test and a different optician, get it right but it took months. They remade the lenses 3 times (someone didn’t get their bonus!).  Very frustrating.

    Mmm, old houses!

DD has a similar problem at her house in her utility room, which is a big room, about 2.2 x 4.2m with 2 side rooms off it.....an internal store room to the left, 1.8x 2.4 m, and the boiler room on the right by the outside door, 2mx2m.

The utility room itself has a dip in the middle of the floor which I have levelled up as far as possible, but in the store room there is a "hump" in the doorway which I could do nothing about as the floor in there is concrete.

Fortunately DD had decided on a "plank" style design in light oak, similar to that on the ground floor of her old  house, and the planks when running lengthways over humps and dips are very flexible so it worked out OK.  The hump is rather strange to walk over ghough!

As the 2 dodgy areas are in "rooms" that are at 90  degrees to each other, I have laid the planks diagonally to disguise the fact that nothing is straight or level!  I did the same in her previous house as it went through the kitchen, utility room, living room, hall and cloakroom without joins in doorways. Laying diagonally cuts out problems with squint walls.

In the bathrooms she has used a large tile style design.

When I was working -Trading Standards Officer - over the years we used to take quite a few complaints and requests for advice about people's problems with varifocal and bifocal glasses. People saying they couldn't see properly etc, with opticians saying they would get used to them. Last year my optician suggested, to save me swapping glasses all the time, that I try them. I only gave it a minutes thought and declined.
