I have worn varifocals for about 9 years and have used 2 national chains of opticians during this time. The first 2 prescriptions for glasses resulted in a huge bill [no sight correction needed!] but subsequent renewals resulted in much cheaper bills for lenses + coatings, reactolite etc.
However, the cheaper costs has coincided with a couple of slightly off centre lenses [corrected at first time of asking] and two prescriptions [one from each opticians chain] where the Reactolite coating has failed, resulting in a 1/2 clear/1/2 darkened lens which is quite disorienting! Suspect cheaper materials and rushed production processes to blame. The cost of my last prescription was around 1/2 that of my first, despite 7 years inflation! New glasses will be needed post COVID, but for now, I just remove specs for keyboard work and wear them for viewing anything further than 6 feet away.
Blind Pugh is alive and well and self isolating in Fife ...

Good to hear all is well Nellie. OH has to wear a hat nowadays, one to protect his fragile ears, burned badly back in his young firefighter days, cork helmet, little protection (they crisp in the sun😬) and his skin is now more sensitive due to chemo. Can highly recommend Tilley brand👍

It’s birthday week here at the moment. Had a lovely afternoon tea at home, nice homemade fodder, lots of lovely presents. Unwrapping is something the pooch loves being involved in (what is it with dogs and crackly paper🤷♀️😂) hence room looked like a paper bomb had exploded. Then the party boy took his self off for a lie down after all the excitement. Got some lovely presents, as did Mum as well. 😁

Bakers2. Going private is under active consideration if I dont hear anything fairly soon.

I've got the full varifocal set up plus reactolite, if I hold my glasses in my hands I have to be careful as covering up a part of the reactolite leaves a clear patch etc. The glasses I'm wearing at present were probably too narrow for the prescription so next time, thanks to fashion changes I can opt for larger frames. However I don't like the extra weight this entails...I can't win. I did walk around once thinking the reactolite had failed but I'd actually lost a lense without noticing it!
I can't see anything close up if I remove my glasses so I'm happy with varifocals, I now feel dizzy if I don't wear them, the pavement moves beneath my feet...

"A lovely sunny day here and could be upto 19C" RK
crikey, if we had 19C, i would be in my bathers splashing about in the Solent, just walked pooch, 9c, but regulars in the Solent but in wet suites, that is cheating.

Have 2 pairs of varifocals, 1 pair 4 years old, 2nd 2 years old, never know which pair i am wearing as identical frames, Specsavers told me 2 years ago that i needed new lenses, although i thought i could see ok. When i collected new pair, I told them that i could not see any significant differance, usual trotted out "give it a couple of weeks to get used to them", i did but no differance, filled in a customer satisfaction form on line and told them that i thought they were just money grabbing, invited in for a check, guy that interviewed me said that the change made was so miniscual it should never have warranted buying a new pair of specs, gave me full refund and told me i could keep my new specs, hence 2 pairs both up and running.
I always buy the more expensive lenses, better field of view, but buy reasonably cheap but the more robust frames, am past the fashion conscious stage of my life.

Millie - Do you know what the current waiting time is for a cataract op?
Following my eye operation last April for a detached retina, I was told at the time that one side effect will be early onset of a cataract in that eye. I had new reading glasses in October and everything was as normal for reading but in February needed distance glasses for the first time as there were signs of a cataract starting. She said it wasn't yet up to the normal criteria for a cataract but could probably put me forward due to the speed it had arrived. I declined saying I would give it 9 months to see how it went on (trying to get lots of holidays in!). However it would be good to know how long the wait is once I need one.

Lovely looking tea there takethedogalong yum yum 🎂🍻 belated birthday greetings to you and your mum.
Cold damp walk in the local estate this morning. 4c, still only that now 🌬. Parking charges to be introduced been announced despite the consultation period still open 😤. £3 if you pay rates to city, £5 if not, if you visit daily for dog walking that mounts up. Lovely very inclusive playground, for those not so able too, so they'll be hit too......
With cataracts I understand that if you go private you don't need a 'ripe' cataract, that's n NHS stipulation. I was quoted about 3k all in about 2 years ago, same surgeon who did my op.
Good news nelliethehooker yes hat with good brim definitely the way to go. Do check out suncream factor numbers as I believe you get better cover by applying lower numbers more frequently but that may have changed since I looked hard when mum had her first diagnosis - she opted for general cover up legs and sleeves plus hat and shade only plus factor 30.
OH has worn varifocals for 30 plus years. His from the national chain, not Boots, weren't as clear as the very old ones, frames very delicate, they were to replace. It seemed they thought he didn't know what he could see! I wasn't convinced they were altered when they kept them and claimed adjustments had been made........ I persuaded him to go my optician a go which he did, similar outcome but you could see that one lens had not been put in properly as the screw wouldn't close. That was returned and tweaked. Bigger frames, so need to get used to them etc etc. I think theres a lot depending on the measurements of eyes taken by the non optometrist........ Late last year, when we were allowed out we changed opticians and both of us received excellent care, me in particular with oddities. His glasses from them fine from first wear. Different factory?? We too always go for the best, especially as he needs lenses thinned. It's very hard to say what the problem is, and I can understand trading standards being called in. A refund and write off for us put it down to experience........ But that's not always possible for folk as they aren't cheap 1k isn't to be sneezed at!

KJ - Penrith is a nice little town to visit we always make a point of going there when we are in the Lakes. We use a couple of sites that are close by. Troutbeck Head CC is about 8 miles from Penrith and easy to get to the views are lovely but it does tend to be quite expensive. Another site we used regularly although haven’t been to for a couple of year is Waterfoot Park which is a private site close to Pooley Bridge it’s very nice and has a little pub on site it’s mostly statics but the touring area is nice and it was never too expensive when we went there only 5 mins from the M6 and 10 mins from Penrith very handy. We have also used a little CL a bit further north at Longtown so about a 20 min drive to Penrith but it is very good well laid out and easy to get to the owners are very helpful and friendly too and the Lakes are within easy reach Low Moor Head CL. There is a site within walking distance of Penrith we have never stayed on it but did take a drive to see it but have decided against using it as the entrance to it looked very tight.
Hope this helps

Enjoyed our walk this morning despite a bit of rain towards the end of it. So much bird activity going on. So much nesting material being gathered.
Just about to start on my lunch when the phone rang. Expected it to be a scam call. Might still be. It was a handler from Scottish Power to discuss my multiple letters of complaints. Long story short. A recommendation will be made upwards that they find a way to honour their promises to me. It was all I could do to reign my tongue in and merely say that I would believe it when I saw it. I've promised to give them 1 week exactly to sort it out.

I've got two dogs here. Haven't seen visiting dog for a long time but he still bounded in! Our daughter is getting ready for school students next week. OH tottered round with our neighbour's food delivery earlier. Their home which has been up for sale for well over two years has a buyer! I'm not holding out much hope they will actually move but at least they haven't put this buyer off by saying they don't want to move and plans are afoot to find them a small bungalow near their Welsh family. I don't think they could get through another winter like this one, much too difficult this time round.

Just as the tea had been made and the sarnie finally adorned and sliced the phone rang. Great timing.
I could bore people to death with this saga. I'm afraid that once it's over I will have to write to Ofgem anyway as I'm sure that they have broken the law. No-one I've spoken to can confirm or deny it. Basically they don't know.
So, when we have visitors we want to politely get rid off I might launch into the saga. Beware.

Happy dog sitting.
Hope your neighbours do move as I'm not sure you could go through another winter like it either.

Grey and cold again today.
OH looks like he will have to get a new vehicle battery, he has tried several times to charge it but its not holding a charge so must have a damaged cell. Fun and games earlier trying to get it out from where it sits under the cab floor. When he tried to remove the terminals the alarm went off. Now sorted, just trying to remove it from the floor.
I'm in the process of making covers for the seat bases in the MH.
This morning I spoke to the club and rearranged the tunnel crossing we had for June now arranged for September
heres hoping this time we make it and we don't have to bother about tests etc.My varifocals are fine at times but at others horrible, just sat reading or looking outside they are ok but in the car there are times that I really struggle to see clearly. I think its down to where the transition is as I've never had these problems before. If I wear my single vision distance lenses to drive its great but I can't see the dash and dials so good

KJ we've used a CL near Penrith for overnighting but its not got H/S, the small site that Nellie mentioned at Kendal, near Morrisons supermarket, we looked at for future visits. The road it sits on isn't overly busy most of the day, around school going home time it is for a short while. There is a rally field next to it though which was in use at that time. The C&CC site in Kendal would always be our first choice though as its in such a nice area and very quite, nice walk from the site into Morrisons but the walk into town might be a bit much
when we used it the booking page said no availablity for one of the nights we wanted so I took a chance and gave the site team a call, they managed to re work the bookings and found us a pitch for all the nights we wanted. I think it was only possible as we have a small unit. There are a number of pitches on that site that only small vans can go on. The site team moved folk around and managed to squeeze us in

Yes, we like the CCC site in Kendal, used it 3 times now I think. We will keep an eye out in case a vacancy comes up, and meantime find out about that other one nearer the town, plus check out CLs.
Very cold here today, just when we were looking forward to it getting a bit warmer, but at least it is dry.
In the hope we may be able to get the builders in soon, we have started to order more items for our bathroom project, got a new radiator today, have a concealed cistern on order, next will be the shower screen, still to decide on whether to get new lights, OH likes the ones we have so we may just keep them.
Then we will need tile trim, cement and grout, and maybe some wet wall panel if we are going to keep the easy access to the shower pipework. Last thing is new countertop, but it is rather big to store for long, so we will leave that meantime.

You're beginning to sound like Alex S..... he could probably help you. Will we see you on TV soon... Scottish "Power" has much to answer for!

That's true about the neighbour situation although we've had so many new people arriving around us lately that I will miss my "old pals."

It does look like nobody can confirm or deny anything north of the border either Brue but a bit much being likened to AS.

Funnily enough I was speaking to a site owner in Scotland last week and she said she had met him, didn't like him at all but did believe part of the "conspiracy" theory and that from a NS supporter. Confusing for her. I think we'll leave it at that before it gets out of hand.
We've had a few new incomers, some good, some indifferent and some awful. There will be a big change soon as at least 5 households over 85 and in poor health.

It’s all change possibly as well here, on our little street. Only 10 houses, five properties were up for sale at one bit. Two were same owner going through years of probate, one is now sold, new owners imminent. T’other is still not ready to sell. Two more were up for sale, but now withdrawn, as owners haven’t found anywhere they prefer. (🤷♀️) That leaves our next door neighbour who has been forced into moving because of Covid and needs somewhere smaller now her daughter has left home. Big house for a lone person. I shall miss her though, absolutely lovely. Hate losing a nice neighbour, always a bit of a lottery who moves in next😬
Its foul outside here. Very cold and wet. I have a new Fitbit for my birthday. After a burst of walking energy this morning, it now appears to think I might be asleep😉or worse😱

Mikey A the usual wait for a cataract op in my area is around 2 to 3 months (can be longer in some areas) but I have now been on the waiting list for over a year because of covid. No idea for how much longer as they are only doing urgent eye ops at the moment. I would imagine for new referals they must now be at least a year behind 🙁
Belated birthday greetings to you and your Mum tda. The tea looks delicious.
I hope you win your fight with Scottish Power WN.
I noticed that the shelf in the utility room with my cookery books on was bowing slightly so decided to have a sort out and a cull. I kept getting side tracked looking through old recipes. I have decided to get rid of quite a few that were rarely used. They will be taken to the bookstall in the porch of a pub in our local village. Shelf looks a lot happier now.
2 -
Oh Millie, I feel for you. I absolutely hate getting rid of cookery books. Some things go out of fashion but recipes never seem to.
I had to do the same thing a few years ago ( ended up buying one of them back from the charity shop
).Thank you for your support in energy fight. I've got past first base at least.

Yes WN. It is a bit of a wrench to get rid of some of the cookery books but I did go through a phase of buying lots of cookery books because they looked nice. The culled ones are still sitting on a shelf in son's old room so a few might still go back.
I also found during my sort out my old school domestic science exercise books (only the girls did it, not the boys!). As well as cookery we were also told how to do the laundry, clean the sink etc. There is a whole section on the daily cleaning of the oven and another section for the weekly cleaning of the oven. I don't think I could have been concentrating very hard! Those books are back on the shelf as I can't bear to part with them. Ditto my lovely old Oxo cook book. Does anyone else remember those?I wonder how many other customers of your previous energy supplier are having the same fight with Scottish Power?
0 -
To be honest Millie, I don't think it will be many for the reasons I am. I just don't like people promising me something then renegiing on that promise, not once but twice. It's a point of principle.
I remember the Oxo cook books. Didn't have one myself but my Gran did, (don't take it personally
). I was always interested in cooking.0 -
Kjell, we've stopped on it and didn't notice any road noise at night as it's not on the main road. It stands opposite the Grammar School but has a field between the road and the site. Should you decide to go I'd suggest arriving around 1 to 1:30 during the week. There is a coded gate onto the site. We paid the full amount prior to arrival as we knew we were definitely going there, but I think they require a deposit whenever.
We have also stayed at Mosergh, which is a decent quiet site with super views, but I think you would struggle a bit with your large van getting there as the road to the site is rather narrow and winding. Not the sort of road one would want to meet a tractor on coming in the opposite direction!!
For stays at Penrith perhaps the best option would be Moss Thorn, No.256 in the SD. It is not too far from the M6 and quiet. The pitches are all HS although relatively narrow. We've used it a few times and would go back again.

We have quite a few cookery books as well. Mum bought us a big Good Housekeeping book, full of all sorts of interesting “how to...” information when we got married, that’s still used quite a bit. Later came a Complete Delia, OH loves this, his go to for lots of stuff. We only ate meat for around six months after we got married, gave it up, so we have lots of nice veggie cook books. I love specialist books as well, have a Potato and Rice cook book, some great stuff in there, Selection of the brilliant Australian Women’s Weekly books as well. I also have Lorraine Pascal’s book. Soup Bible, Bread Machine book, all still used. Nice to browse through for something different if we have friends round (anyone remember when we could do this🤣) or a special occasion.

If we lived down on the south coast I suspect that I would be in shorts a lot longer than I do up here in the chilly, windy north, Rufs. I don't notice the cold so much on my legs, but suffer from cold hands at the best of times, and wearing gloves while in shorts is certainly not de rigueur!!

I did ask if a cap would be ok, but was told that it had to be a broad brimmed hat to cover my ears. Luckily I have a couple like that, and think that there's an old umpire's styled one in a box of spare walking gear which I'll put in my rucksack as a reserve.

What with DSB in socks and sandals, it doesn't look like CAMC members are going to feature in fashion mags for sartorial elegance anytime soon.
